Please listen with care and find the support resources at the end of these show notes if you need them. In This Episode: What happens when you write the book you desperately needed as a child – and then the world doesn't get to read it? Author, book coach, and mental health advocate Rocky Callen joins Seryna for a conversation that refuses to sanitize anything. They talk about carrying suicidal ideation since age 11 with no one knowing, how writing A Breath Too Late became a reckoning with everything she'd hidden, and what it really looks like to bet on yourself before the world is ready to bet on you. Plus: the difference between vulnerability and vulnerability porn, why life is always in revision, and why your first draft – of a book or a life – is always worth celebrating. What You'll Discover: Why glossing over mental health struggles doesn't protect people – it isolates them The survival self hiding behind high achievement and the shiny mask of ambition The difference between sharing your trauma and sharing what you're holding within it What it looks like to bet on yourself before the world is ready to do the same Why life – and writing – is a process of revision, not a race to the finish line The reparenting practice of treating your fumbles the way you'd treat a baby learning to walk Episode Highlights: 00:53 - Meet Rocky Callen: author, book coach, and co-conspirator in dismantling the polished projection 05:14 - Why sanitizing mental health conversations is dangerous – and what we actually need instead 08:17 - Writing A Breath Too Late in a week, sobbing every day, and finally naming the suicidal ideation she'd carried since age 11 13:02 - The difference between trauma dumping and purposeful storytelling 17:21 - The book's wild ride: pandemic release, critical acclaim, and going out of print 20:30 - Getting the rights back, Times Square, and re-releasing September 2026 for World Suicide Prevention Day 38:24 - Life as revision: taking the red pen to the story you're living 56:37 - Being vs. doing: the big exhale this whole conversation builds toward About Vulnerability That Actually Heals: There's a difference between vulnerability and vulnerability porn. Rocky names it clearly: if you're going to share the hard things, share what you're holding within them – not just the terrible thing that happened, but the question, the insight, the messy uncertainty you're sitting with. That's what creates connection. That's what makes someone feel seen instead of spectated. Rocky spent a lifetime performing competence. Interned at NASA at 12. College at 16. Exceptional by every external measure – while quietly carrying suicidal ideation since she was 11 years old. Not even her husband knew. It wasn't until she wrote A Breath Too Late that she began to reckon with what she'd been hiding. And then the letters came: from young people navigating suicidal ideation, from people inside domestically violent homes, from mothers who had left those homes and remembered how it felt. One letter described a young person who read the book, brought it to their mother, and together they left. That is the medicine of stories told with honesty and care. And it's exactly why Rocky fought to get this book back into the world. Listen to today's podcast... “A permanent solution to a temporary state.” We often don't hear about those that died by suicide. But the issue of suicide touches us all – whether directly or indirectly. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and it is celebrated on September 10th each year as a way to improve education about suicide, disseminate information, decrease stigmatization and, most importantly, raise awareness that suicide can be preventable. LEXINGTON, Ky. (September 5, 2025) – September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day — a moment to highlight the importance of open, honest conversations about mental health and the resources available to help those in crisis. On this episode of “Behind the Blue”, Dr. Lindsey Jasinski and Dr. Marc Woods, two of the key leaders behind the EmPATH program at Eastern State Hospital, discuss their decades of experience in behavioral health and suicide prevention, and share how their team is helping Kentuckians find hope during some of their most vulnerable moments. They discuss the alarming prevalence of suicide—particularly among young people in Kentucky—and offer actionable insight on how to support someone who may be struggling. They also explain how EmPATH, a low-barrier, 24/7 mental crisis emergency unit, is changing the way patients receive immediate, compassionate mental health care—and why that model is quickly gaining national attention. “Behind the Blue” is available via a variety of podcast providers, including iTunes and Spotify. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. UK's latest medical breakthroughs, research, artists and writers will be featured, along with the most important news impacting the university. “Behind the Blue” is a joint production of the University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare. Transcripts for most episodes are now embedded in the audio file and can be accessed in many podcast apps during playback. Transcripts for older episodes remain available on the show's blog page. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. UK HealthCare's EmPATH unit (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) is a new emergency unit dedicated to the treatment of patients experiencing a mental health crisis. Located on the campus of Eastern State Hospital at 1350 Bull Lea Road in Lexington, this unit is open 24/7, 365 days a year and is designed to provide immediate access to mental health care and resources. Referrals are not needed to come to EmPATH. You can also call or text 988, the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, to speak with a trained counselor — free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. And for Kentuckians, free QPR training (Question, Persuade, Refer) is available at kyqpr.ukhc.org — a one-hour course that could help you save a life. From breaking stigmas to finding strength in vulnerability, these stories are the epitome of resilience.First, psychotherapist Owen O'Kane reflects on his deeply personal experiences growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles as a gay Irish Catholic man and how opening up to a therapist - an Irish Catholic nun, no less - helped him break free from what he calls the "holy trinity of shame." Next, SAS star Jason Fox shares his transformation from being sceptical of therapy to finding life-changing support through clinical psychology, thanks to the encouragement of a boss during one of his darkest periods. Finally, chart-topping singer Tom Grennan reveals how embracing fitness has been a game-changer for his mental health, giving him not just a new outlook but also a supportive gym community that feels like family. We hope this episode inspires you to start your own conversations. The conversation in this episode dives into suicide prevention, stigma, and the changes needed to get to Zero-Suicide. Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah hunts for new perspectives on issues that matter to young people. In Singapore, suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people aged between 10 and 29. A 160-page white paper report called Project Hayat (meaning ‘life' in Malay) was launched in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept 10 by advocacy group SG Mental Health Matters. Project Hayat outlines a national suicide prevention strategy for Singapore, and laid out its own research findings and 23 recommendations for addressing the gaps in suicide prevention here.In this episode, host Natasha Ann Zachariah finds out how we could talk more openly about suicide matters among young people, and what more can be done to address the gaps in support. Her guests on the show are the project's co-lead Dr Rayner Tan, 35, who is from the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Shantini Sathiyanesan, 38, calls herself a “wounded healer” for her journey through suicidality, and also for having experienced the grief of losing someone to suicide. Highlights (click/tap above): 2:55 Has Project Hayat's data studies shown unique barriers specific to minorities in society? 5:30 How to tell if someone has suicidal thoughts; passive and active suicide ideation; what is psychache (psychological pain)? 9:25 Shantini shares her own lived experience of suicidality - having suicidal thoughts, ideation, and losing someone to suicide - despite living a highly functioning life 13:58 What is the suicide question and why is it important to ask it? Paradox of saying “I don't want to be a burden” 20:10 Importance of Project Hayat's suicide prevention strategies; what can we do better when someone comes to us for help? 31:23 Dr Rayner Tan on Project Hayat's bold ‘zero suicides' target for Singapore; on SOS (Samaritans of Singapore) helplines and the experience it offers The Project Hayat White Paper is available here: www.sgmentalhealthmatters.com MENTAL WELL-BEING Institute of Mental Health's Mental Health Helpline: 6389-2222 (24 hours) Samaritans of Singapore: 1-767 (24 hours) / 9151-1767 (24 hours CareText via WhatsApp) Singapore Association for Mental Health: 1800-283-7019 Silver Ribbon Singapore: 6386-1928 Tinkle Friend: 1800-274-4788 Chat, Centre of Excellence for Youth Mental Health: 6493-6500/1 Women's Helpline (Aware): 1800-777-5555 (weekdays, 10am to 6pm) COUNSELLING Touchline (Counselling): 1800-377-2252 Touch Care Line (for caregivers): 6804-6555 Care Corner Counselling Centre: 6353-1180 Counselling and Care Centre: 6536-6366 We Care Community Services: 3165-8017 ONLINE RESOURCES https://moht.com.sg/mindline-sg/ https://fycs.org/ec2-sg/ https://www.tinklefriend.sg/ https://www.imh.com.sg/chat/Pages/default.aspx https://carey.carecorner.org.sg/ (for those aged 13 to 25) https://www.limitless.sg/talk (for those aged 12 to 25) Follow Natasha on her IG account and DM her your thoughts on this topic: https://str.sg/8WavHost: Natasha Zachariah (natashaz@sph.com.sg)Read Natasha's articles: https://str.sg/iSXmFollow Natasha on LinkedIn: https://str.sg/v6DN Filmed by: Studio+65 Edited by ST Podcast producers: Eden Soh & Teo Tong Kai Executive producers: Ernest Luis & Lynda Hong Follow The Usual Place Podcast here and get notified for new episode drops: Channel: https://str.sg/5nfm Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/9ijX Spotify: https://str.sg/cd2P YouTube: https://str.sg/wEr7u Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg --- Follow more ST podcast channels: All-in-one ST Podcasts channel: https://str.sg/wvz7 ST Podcast website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts ST Podcasts YouTube: https://str.sg/4Vwsa --- Get The Straits Times' app, which has a dedicated podcast player section: The App Store: https://str.sg/icyB Google Play: https://str.sg/icyX #tup #tuptr #healthcheck See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this impactful episode of the "Shark Theory" podcast, host Baylor Barbee shares his enlightening experience participating in the North Texas Warrior Golf Association's Mission Zero classic, a charity golf tournament with an extraordinary purpose: using the game of golf to assist veterans in overcoming mental health challenges. Remarkably, this program has maintained a record of zero suicides since its inception in 2011, coinciding compellingly with World Suicide Prevention Day. Baylor's reflective insights on gratitude, camaraderie, and resilience are poignantly woven into his narrative, making this episode both inspiring and educational. Baylor's narration transitions into a deep dive into the essence of being a genuinely good person, epitomized by his friend Randy Watkins, a mortgage lender and an embodiment of altruism. He discusses how Randy's unwavering commitment to selflessness and helping others without expecting anything in return orchestrates success in both personal and professional arenas. Baylor encourages listeners to evaluate and enhance their own "good person" skills, stressing the importance of putting others first and creating meaningful connections. Additionally, this episode underscores the significance of perseverance and adaptability in the face of varying life circumstances, drawing parallels between the changing dynamics of a golf course and one's opportunities in life. Key Takeaways: The North Texas Warrior Golf Association's Mission Zero classic has effectively utilized golf to promote veteran mental health, achieving zero suicides since 2011. Playing golf with veterans offers a profound sense of gratitude, especially on significant days like World Suicide Prevention Day. Developing a "good person" skill is essential; altruism and thoughtful connections can significantly impact one's success and fulfillment. Persistence in the face of difficult seasons or circumstances can eventually lead to success, much like adapting to wet or dry conditions on a golf course. Blocking out negative noise and maintaining focus on your goals, despite external distractions, is crucial for personal and professional growth. Notable Quotes: "Since 2011, they have had zero suicides as a result. And I just thought that was so incredible." - Baylor Barbee "I think the secret to Randy's success, he's just an all-around great guy." - Baylor Barbee "Sometimes you just have to focus on being an extremely good person." - Baylor Barbee "Eventually the tide turns, eventually the season changes. Just stay where you're at, commit to what it is that you're doing right." - Baylor Barbee "Remember why you're there and what you're doing it for." - Baylor Barbee If you're looking to sharpen your mindset and achieve your goals, we've got you covered. In this poignant and deeply personal episode of "Shark Theory," host Baylor Barbee addresses the critical issue of suicide prevention in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day. Baylor delves into his own encounters with suicide, recounting the tragic losses of friends and family, and reflecting on his struggles with feelings of hopelessness. This episode is a heartfelt outreach to those suffering, providing not only personal anecdotes but also practical advice for individuals in despair. Baylor shares the genesis of his initiative "No More Silence," aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging open discussion. Throughout the episode, he emphasizes the importance of seeking help, the strength found in vulnerability, and the necessity of reaching out to others to share one's burdens. Keywords central to this discourse include "mental health," "suicide prevention," "depression," and "strength in vulnerability." Key Takeaways: Personal Experience with Suicide: Baylor opens up about losing friends and family to suicide and relates his own journey through despair. No More Silence Initiative: Baylor highlights his mission to promote mental health awareness and the significance of communicating struggles. Strength in Vulnerability: True strength comes from acknowledging your struggles and seeking help, rather than suffering in silence. The Power of Communication: Talking to someone, even a mirror, can provide new perspectives and possible solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems. Make it to Tomorrow: Baylor's simple yet powerful mantra for those in pain is to focus on surviving just one more day, as things can and will change over time. Notable Quotes: "I could relate to their hurt, I could relate to their struggle, I could relate to what they were going through, so much to the fact that I was like, man, I don't want anybody to feel that way." "You gotta talk to somebody... anything that you keep inside your head always gets worse." "True strength, if you want to show your strength, is not keep it to yourself. True strength is saying, hey, I need help." "There's strength and vulnerability. When I started sharing my stories... it's so good to hear somebody else say that because I thought I was the only one who felt that way." "Make it to tomorrow, brother. Just make it to tomorrow. And when you get there and it feels like nothing changes, just make it to tomorrow." If you're looking to sharpen your mindset and achieve your goals, we've got you covered. While this Sunday marks the start of the NFL's regular season for most teams—an unofficial holiday for many football fans—it has the potential to be life-changing for reasons that have little to do with sports. September 10 is also World Suicide Prevention Day, and a number of organizations are partnering to use the NFL's platform to help speak to people who might be thinking about taking their own life. They have much to teach us about both the urgency of this issue and our ability to help.
