Skip the banter: 00:07:33 Josh Hilberling was trying to leave. At 6'5", the former Air Force serviceman didn't fit the usual image of a domestic violence victim, but court records, hospital visits, and a dismissed protective order all pointed to a volatile and escalating pattern of abuse in his young marriage. On a sweltering afternoon in Tulsa, everything came to a violent end when Josh fell 17 stories from a high-rise apartment window. His wife Amber admitted to pushing him, though whether it was self-defense or murder remains fiercely debated. Allison tells us the rest of this story that leaves one boy with no parents and two families forever asking what was really going on behind closed doors. Support us and become a Patron! A former Freelance Wrestling World Champion and a regular in Ego Pro Chicago, Alfonso Gonzalez is a talented wrestler and just a hilarious guy. Gonzalez returns for a special holiday edition of Windy City Slam to discuss his new Christmas album (he's a recording artist now, too), being the first wrestler to cash in a Red Star Medallion at Freelance, an altercation with Jeff Jarrett at an Iron Spirit Pro event, being a trainer at Mustafa Ali's Chicago Wrestling Center, emerging CWC students Brian Gorta, Andre Flo and Jonny Black, Ego Pro's upcoming show at Hollywood Casino, his favorite all-time Christmas gifts, his take on New Year's Resolutions and more. Plus, Mike brings news from Wrestle League, Southland Championship Wrestling and 2econd Wrestling and previews lineups for AAW Pro's Windy City Classic XX and AEW Worlds End. Mike Pankow is a 25-year-plus professional journalist and wrestling superfan who covers local Chicagoland wrestling and national promotions like AEW and WWE. If there is something going on in Chicago, Mike knows about it. Enjoy “Wrestling, Chicago-Style” on The Broadcast Basement On-Demand Radio Network! Music by Jason Shaw on Audionautix.com. Sharply intelligent, dazzlingly analytical, & a genuinely kind soul, my gifted friend, freelance writer and Letterboxd editor Mitchell Beaupre is one of my favorite guests for a reason. Returning to the pod for the first time in a year, this episode kicks off the start of a new Watch With Jen miniseries covering some of our favorite westerns of the twenty-first century. Beginning with 2020-2025, Mitchell and I take a deeper look at Kelly Reichardt's FIRST COW, Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG, & Kevin Costner's HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA - CHAPTER 1. Note: Unless a wild burst of inspiration suddenly strikes, this will most likely be the pod's season finale for '25. Fear not, Watch With Jen: Season 7 will launch in the new year. Sending best wishes to you and yours for a safe, happy, healthy, and peaceful holiday season.Originally Posted on Patreon (12/22/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/146466616Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi & PayPalTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Skip the banter: 00:06:22 (give or take a minute depending on ads) In 2014, 14-year-old Breck Bednar was a bright, tech-savvy teenager who loved gaming and coding with his friends online. When a charismatic older gamer named Lewis began appearing in their chat group, claiming to be a 17-year-old entrepreneur with his own company and connections to the U.S. government, Breck was fascinated by someone who seemed to share his passion for technology. But as months passed, Breck's mother Lorin noticed disturbing changes. Her once-open son became secretive and distant, defending his new friend against her growing concerns. Despite her attempts to intervene, including contacting police about potential grooming, Lewis had already woven an invisible web of manipulation around her son. Breck's story exposes the terrifying reality of online predators who hide behind screens, exploiting the trust of vulnerable teens in spaces where they feel safest, and serves as a stark reminder that danger can enter our homes through something as ordinary as a gaming headset. Skip the banter: 10:12 From the outside, the Reynolds family looked picture-perfect. A deeply religious couple raising their adopted daughter in sunny Coral Springs, Florida. But beneath the surface of baseball games, church choir practices, and shopping trips at the mall, something dark was brewing. When 17-year-old Nikki Reynolds became obsessed with her high school boyfriend, her parents watched helplessly as their once-thriving daughter spiraled into lies, manipulation, and increasingly erratic behavior. Then, on the evening of May 14, 1997, everything came to a violent head. What drove a teenager who once seemed to have it all to commit an act so unthinkable that even she couldn't believe what she'd done? Allison tells us the whole story. Support us and become a Patron! Today, we get to learn from Matthew Paneitz, founder and executive director of Long Way Home. This organization built Hero School, a student-built and community-built campus in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala.Built from recycled tires and trash, the campus took 16 years to build and serves 178 students enrolled in PreK through High School. The school campus is almost complete.Matthew is also the recipient of the 2020 Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service for his work in Guatemala. This award, presented annually by the National Peace Corps Association, honors Peace Corps volunteers who continue to contribute to humanitarian causes.Long before this award and the existence of Hero School, Matthew had an idea.An idea that needed funding, direction, and partners. How did Matthew obtain funding when he started this project? How did he develop a strategy sustaining him and the school he built with the residents of Comalapa? What is the school's curriculum, and how does it change the conversation around poverty?Let's find out. Skip the banter: 10:00:00 (give or take a minute depending on ads) When 34-year-old mother of four Susie Casey didn't come home after a night out in April 2008, her children knew something was terribly wrong.
