Skip the banter: 00:04:57 (give or take 30 seconds with ads) When a fire broke out inside a D.C. mansion just steps from the Vice President's residence, first responders expected smoke, not a massacre. Inside, they found four people bound and tortured, including a 10-year-old boy, murdered after being held hostage for nearly 22 hours. A missing Porsche, a hard drive ripped from the wall, and a crust of leftover pizza left on the bed were the first clues in a case that shook the nation's capital. But what unfolded in the courtroom raised deeper questions: did he act alone or was this a carefully orchestrated inside job? The victims were 46-year-old Savvas Savopoulos, his wife 47-year-old Amy Savopoulos, their 10-year-old son Philip Savopoulos, and their 57-year-old housekeeper Veralicia "Vera" Figueroa. The New World Order – better known simply as the NWO – was a pop culture phenomenon in the late 1990s and catapulted professional wrestling into the mainstream consciousness. ESPN journalist Marc Raimondi joined Windy City Slam to chat about the revolution and his new book, “Say Hello to The Bad Guys: “How Professional Wrestling's New World Order” Changed America.” We go back to how the NWO was formed and ask Marc about his research, share opinions on the group's impact on pop culture, recount some of his opinions of the events of 29 years ago this month and his take on the today's pro wrestling landscape. Plus, Mike previews a big weekend on the national scene with events from WWE, AEW, NXT and ROH and local shows such as DREAMWAVE Wrestling, POWW Entertainment and ARW Pro. Mike Pankow is a 25-year-plus professional journalist and wrestling superfan who covers local Chicagoland wrestling and national promotions like AEW and WWE. Skip the banter: 5:48 (give or take 30 seconds depending on ads) It was the Saturday before Thanksgiving when 22-year-old Dru Sjodin left work, walked through the mall, and called her boyfriend while heading to her car. Four minutes into the call, her voice shifted—distracted, tense. She said, “Okay, okay,” and the line went dead. He thought the call had dropped. By the time her abandoned car was found, night had fallen and the trail was already cold. What no one knew yet was that the voice on the other end of that call had just heard Dru's final moments of freedom. I've been pre-scheduling podcast episodes this summer &, forgetting that we are now living in a time of anything goes chaos in the U.S., last week's conversation wound up publishing in the hours after the news involving Iran. Hopefully anyone who knows me knows that I wouldn't normally pivot from major world news to self-promotion but I still wanted to take this opportunity to apologize for any confusion or insensitivity that the accidentally ill-timed new episode caused. To make up for that gaffe, I thought I'd deliver this third conversation in our summer suite of episodes devoted to Physical Media early, just in case you're heading to the airport or about to unplug for the next week or so since it's a big time for summer travel here in the states. (So far, nothing Earth-shattering has happened that I'm aware of as I type this but as a friend joked, it's getting harder & harder to find a day without a catastrophe.) In any case, may this be a distraction for you. In last week's new Watch With Jen, we led you down the dark streets of neo-noir. This installment is centered on American independent filmmakers (or in the case of Billy Wilder, very independently minded ones) & is devoted to matters of the heart. Kicking things off, VULTURE's brilliant TV critic & Peabody Awards juror Roxana Hadadi joins me to discuss Sean Baker's Oscar winning ANORA, SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET novelist William Boyle returns to tackle CHOOSE ME by one of his favorite filmmakers Alan Rudolph, & I reunite with the knowledgeable film essayist Peter Avellino to talk about the magic of Billy Wilder's SOME LIKE IT HOT. Emotional, sparkling, & warm, I know this conversation will delight. Thanks so much for listening! Skip the banter: 00:05:02 (give or take 30 seconds depending on how many sponsors) You ever hear something so strange it sounds like a made-up urban legend...until you realize it actually happened? This week, we talk about Ruthie Mae McCoy, a woman trying to piece her life together in one of Chicago's most dangerous housing projects. She'd finally started turning things around, getting treatment, going back to school, planning her escape from a place that had swallowed so many lives. But then, she made a 911 call. She said someone was coming through her bathroom wall. What happened next is one of the most haunting true stories we've ever covered—eerie, tragic, and almost impossible to believe. Skip the banter: 00:07:34 (give or take 30 seconds based on ads) In 2011, 20-year-old Madison Scott headed to a party at a remote campground in British Columbia, a place where the wilderness stretches as far as the eye can see. Her truck was still parked, her rings left in the dirt, her phone and keys nowhere to be found. What happened after the party died down? Allison tells us the rest of the story. Welcome to the unofficial second half of a delightful extended conversation about actor James Gandolfini that started at the end of April with me interviewing film critic, historian, & author Jason Bailey about his new outstanding biography GANDOLFINI: JIM, TONY, & THE LIFE OF A LEGEND for Poisoned Pen Bookstore. While I highly recommend you check out that earlier discussion on the Poisoned Pen's YouTube or FB Live channels (&/or wherever you get your podcasts), this episode of Watch With Jen works just as well on its own. Celebrating the beloved performer's diverse filmography & decades-spanning career as a character actor, in this show, we take a look at five of his most underrated or under-discussed performances in the films NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN, A CIVIL ACTION, THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE, IN THE LOOP, & NOT FADE AWAY. An engaging look at the tremendous range of one of the most iconic actors of our generation, this is a perfect listen ahead of Father's Day.Originally Posted on Patreon (6/8/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/130281682Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Skip the banter: 00:05:18 (give or take 30 seconds depending on ads) A little girl with a name as gentle as Harmony should have had a life filled with bedtime stories, scraped knees, and warm arms to run into. Instead, Harmony Montgomery was handed off like paperwork between systems, disappearing into broken homes and blind spots. She was five years old. She had an eye condition that needed care, a laugh that stuck with people, and adults in her life who either couldn't or wouldn't protect her. For over two years, no one officially noticed she was gone. Not neighbors. Not schools. Not the agencies assigned to check in. This episode is not just about one child. It's about the terrifying consequences of silence, apathy, and the cracks in a system that was supposed to be her safety net. You'll walk away from this story thinking not only about Harmony, but about every child who doesn't have a voice loud enough to be heard. And maybe you'll question what we're really doing when we say we're protecting children. Support us and become a Patron! Incredibly hardworking and prolific as the woman behind both the website Rachel's Reviews and the popular Hallmarkies podcast, in this breezy, fast paced, nostalgic, well researched discussion, we celebrate the films of the always inventive Aardman Animation, including the Wallace & Gromit claymation stop-motion shorts that first brought them international fame, CHICKEN RUN, ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, the SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE, & more. It's "barbecue," but you know...if you spell it "barbeque," or "BBQ," or "Bar-b-que," it's gonna taste just as good! I got an interview with my man Dave Graham of Graham's Up In Smoke in Philipsburg. Dave's got opinions about barbecue, and that's 100% cool, because he makes excellent barbecue: brisket, pork, chicken (when it's reasonable), sausage, turkey, and salmon. Yes, salmon...but you'll have to wait for Lent! Dave and I got well into the weeds, temperatures, wood, and cuts of meat, and you will be drooling by the time we're done. I'll give you my opinions on barbecue as well; I have been smoking/barbecueing for well over ten years, and I will challenge your thoughts on this ancient method of meat magic cookery. What else? I finally got my first Maibock of the year, from New Trail Brewing, and the Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about three GREAT music venues in Centre County (all of them have a liquor license, so, you know). Next episode? I've got an interview on Monday that I have wanted to get for longer than we've had the podcast, an OG beer bar that I first visited over 20 years ago. Skip the banter (boo): 6:11 You know how some people just give you the creeps? This Sapp piece of garbage was next-level dark. It all starts with a woman named Una Timmons, just walking down the road one night in 1996, when Sapp pulls up offering a ride. Sounds innocent enough, right? But things quickly take a turn. She barely escapes, and when the cops start peeling back the layers on this guy, it's like opening a door to a nightmare. There's this one chilling detail that ties him to some truly horrifying crimes, including cases with kids. It's the kind of story that makes your stomach twist, wondering how someone gets that twisted. And the way it unravels, with confessions spilling out and old cases cracking open, it's like a puzzle you can't stop thinking about. You're gonna want to hear this one. It's haunting.
