One story, of Lore and her family begins: “Lore's father had been a successful inventor and businessman who owned a factory that produced household goods during WWII. He was also part of the underground movement that did not support Hitler. Lore had lived with her parents and two sisters in a section of Germany that became East Germany. She wanted to study and become an archaeologist as a child, but war can change your dreams. At the war's end, that area was administered brutally by the East German police, and a wall was built separating East from West Germany. As the oldest, Lore went to live for almost three years with her grandparents because they could get a food ration card if they had a child in the house.” Another story from : “Venezuela was the wealthiest country in South America. Pablo was born there, and his father was a very successful lawyer. Pablo's cousin fled from Communist Cuba ruled by Fidel Castro to Venezuela to be near him and his family and escape Communism. One year later in 1999, Hugo Chavez became the leader of Venezuela and began dismantling the capitalism that made the country wealthy with a thriving middle class. That cousin realized he had seen this “movie” before in Cuba and wanted no part in it. He decided to leave after only one year in Venezuela. He convinced Pablo to join him and come to the US, but Pablo's father mistakenly thought his status and wealth would continue, so he remained. It is day six of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, and we are headed to Germany. After World War II, Germany was divided into four Allied occupation zones, with the Soviet Union controlling East Germany and East Berlin, while the United States, France, and the U.K. managed Western Germany and West Berlin. By 1949, Europe had transformed dramatically, symbolized by the creation of two Germanies. Initially, movement between the two regions was unrestricted, but as East Germans fled westward in droves, the border was sealed in 1961, culminating in the Berlin Wall, a defining emblem of the Cold War.  In Plauen, East Germany, young Volker Eckert grew up in a Communist city near the Czech border. As a child, Volker developed a fixation on hair, playing with his sister's dolls and mother's wigs, which sparked sexual fantasies he kept secret. By age 14, his obsession with hair escalated into violence. On May 7, 1974, he strangled his classmate Sylvia Unterdörfel in her home under the pretense of needing help with homework, driven by an uncontrollable urge to feel her hair. Fearing exposure, he killed her and staged her death as a suicide. Sadly, Sylvia would not be his only victim. Today is the 35th anniversary of the Berlin Wall and East German border opening in the autumn of 1989. In this riveting episode, I speak with Dietmar Schultke, a member of the Grenztruppen, the East German Border Guards and delve into the life of those responsible for preventing escapes over the Berlin Wall and the East German Border. Dietmar opens up about his life in the GDR, sharing personal stories of his recruitment into the border troops, the rigorous training he endured, and the psychological pressures he faced during his service. Training in Eisenach prepared him for a potential third World War, with exercises in sharpshooting, combat, and gas mask drills. The psychological toll of such training was immense, as soldiers were constantly under surveillance, with one in ten being a Stasi informant. The cultural impact of the time was not lost on Dietmar. Grandpa calls him and explains that he never found the painting because the address of the hiding place that was written in the book was no longer correct after the war. Also, everything looked different due to the reconstruction of Germany. He then glued the page back into the book, which was not valuable at that time. You can't find the painting with the address in the book, but today it's very valuable to Grandpa because it was the last present from his father before he died. Grandpa risked East German prison for this book. And it's vaulable because it turns out that it is the only remaining original edition of this book today. When he became forgetful, he and Paul's father gave it to Paul to be on the safe side since Paul loves books. But they were bitterly disappointed when it got lost. Paul calms him down and reminds him that they had never told him about all this. He sends him a link to his new blog to which Grandpa had encouraged him. Grandpa reads some comments and can't believe what is written there. What is it that is so incredible in the comments? Why did Fritz keep quiet about the fact that he caught the Großkauf thieves? And why didn't he tell anybody about his promotion? Why did he always want to party, even though Paul was desperate about the loss of the book? How did he want to help when he got angy because he went to Paul's appartment, but Paul wasn't there? When Stacy's abusive fiancée, Mitch (Miguel Ferrer), learns of their affair, he sets out to kill Devlin. However, Mitch soon gets a nasty surprise when he discovers, thanks to a supernatural necklace, Devlin's love for Stacy proves to be strong even in the face of death itself. "The Ventriloquist's Dummy" from Tales from the Crypt #28 debuted  June 5, 1990 Aspiring ventriloquist Billy Goldman (Bobcat Goldthwait) wants to improve his craft. To that end, he seeks out his idol, retired ventriloquist Mr. Ingels (Don Rickles), for advice. Soon after, Billy finds out that his idol has a dark past, as well as a gruesome secret regarding his success in show business. "Fitting Punishment" from The Vault of Horror #16 debuted June 19, 1990 Bible-thumping funeral home director Ezra Thornberry (Moses Gunn) cuts corners when it comes to his own line of work. Following a tragic car crash, he is made the legal guardian of his teenage nephew, Bobby (Jon Clair). Bobby becomes his uncle's apprentice mortician to earn his room & board, though he soon comes to resent the abusive behavior & stinginess of his uncle, especially after Ezra cripples him in a rage. "Korman's Kalamity" from Tales from the Crypt #31 debuted June 26, 1990 Jim Korman (Harry &erson), a cartoonist who works on the Tales from the Crypt comic, is put-upon by his shrewish & abusive wife Mildred (Colleen Camp) to take experimental fertility pills. Later that night, a policewoman, Lorelei Phillips (Cynthia Gibb), is saved from a rapist (Richard Schiff) when a monster suddenly emerges from a washing machine & tears the rapist's head off. Seeing the same monster on an issue of Tales from the Crypt, along with other monsters that were sighted recently, Lorelei interrogates Jim, believing that he is somehow making his drawings come to life.  "The Secret" from The Haunt of Fear #24 debuted  July 31, 1990 Theodore (Mike Simmrin), a 12-year-old orphan, is finally able to leave the orphanage he lives in when he is adopted by a rich, childless couple known as the Colberts (William Frankfather & Grace Zabriskie). Unknown to Theodore, his new parents harbor a dark secret.
