Before the mainstreaming of Ellen and the hit show Will and Grace, soaps did their best to bring tenderness to LGBTQ+ storylines. That's the nature of the form: It gives room for anyone and everyone to be complex, fleshed out, loved and hated all at once. From supporting roles to legacy characters to complex depictions in their full humanity, from respectability politics to sometimes making missteps, soaps have found ways to evolve their depictions of queer life. Ryan Phillippe played a gay teen in the 1990s on One Life to Live. Eden Riegel played Bianca, Erica Kane's gay daughter in the 2000s on All My Children. Today, progress looks like a villain, according to Days of Our Lives actor Greg Rikaart. “I came on as the ‘gay villain,' if you will, and to me, that felt like the ultimate equality, in that I didn't have to just say the right thing and follow the rules in order to be palatable to the audience,” he said. “And when I would get blowback from some people … I would just argue all those things: That that is further pushing the envelope open by saying, ‘Yeah, we can be multifaceted. We don't all have to be good guys.' ”

“He is the hottest hoarder you've ever seen!” - Steve on Ryan Phillippe's character On this week's episode, the 2025 Listener Request Month comes to a close with a rowdy discussion about the ridiculously tame PG-13 horror movie, Wish Upon! Why on Earth did they care about avoiding an R rating with this fake Final Destination movie? What is with all the dumpster diving? Why couldn't this wish box talk or be accompanied by a ghost or something? And where is literally any faculty administrator with all the bullying going down at this school? PLUS: How can one be a slut for wontons? Wish Upon stars Joey King, Ryan Phillippe, Ki Hong Lee, Mitchell Slaggert, Shannon Purser, Sydney Park, Elisabeth Röhm, Alice Lee, and Sherilyn Fenn as Mrs. Deluca; directed by John R. Leonetti. This episode of CORNDOWN gets off to a strong start with some light intimidation before wastedmemory hands out questionable puke-related permissions. There's an incident with raccoons, some employee sanitation concerns, and a deep dive into the ethics of promoting bad habits at work. A cat-related head injury adds to the chaos, and Hootis tries to navigate some medieval-sounding parking issues. Meanwhile, wastedmemory has a run-in with a secret police situation, and Abbuw complicates things with elevator-based mistakes. Somewhere in all this, a robot gets involved, but it's unclear if it actually helps. This show is made possible by donations from listeners like you. https://www.michelledanner.comwww.allinfilms.com Instagram michelledannerla There aren't many people who can point to a career full of success as a performer, teacher, storyteller, entrepreneur, and expert. But Michelle Danner can. The legendary acting teacher and founder of the Creative Center for the Arts and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, Danner is also now well-established as a successful film director. Her last film,“Miranda's Victim,” stars Abigail Breslin, Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe, Emily VanCamp, Mireille Enos, Enrique Murciano, Brent Sexton, Josh Bowman, Sebastian Quinn, Taryn Manning, Nolan Gould, Dan Lauria, Kyle MacLachlan, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland. The film tells the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin) who was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. The subsequent trials went all the way to the Supreme Court and led to creation of the Miranda Rights. Up next for Danner is the comedy romance film “The Italians,” which stars Matthew Daddario (Shadowhunters), Rob Estes (Silk Stalkings), Perrey Reeves (Entourage), David DeLuise (Wizards of Waverly Place), Olivia Luccardi (It Follows), Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland, Little Miss Sunshine). The film is currently playing at festivals around the country. A dedicated mom of two (one is an aspiring filmmaker), Danner still has her “day job” – overseeing the faculty of the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, and conducting her weekly acting class. Michelle has worked privately with Christian Slater, Salma Hayek, Gerard Butler, Seth MacFarlane, Penelope Cruz, Chris Rock, Gabrielle Union, Zooey Deschanel, Henry Cavill, Isla Fisher and James Franco. A longtime student of legendary acting teachers like Stella Adler and Uta Hagen, Danner's eclectic approach (which she calls “The Golden Box”) allows actors the freedom to employ a wide variety of techniques. Raised in a show business family and with a deep appreciation for all of the performing arts, Danner also continues to run the boutique “Cinema at the Edge” film festival and is currently preparing to direct a new one-person play, Bonnie Culver's “Norris,” starring Anne Archer, based on the memoirs of the widow of writer Norman Mailer. Simply put, there's almost no one in the business who knows as much about acting and success as Michelle Danner – and her continued success in multiple creative fields makes her one of the most successful women working in the industry today. Director, co-writer, and star of The People's Joker (one of our favorite films of the year), Vera Drew joins for a discussion of the sexy, taboo-breaking, teen thriller Cruel Intentions. A 90s update of the 18th century Peirre Choderlos de Laclos novel 'Les Liaisons dangereuses' (aka Dangerous Liaisons), the film is a darkly comic and gleefully misanthropic erotic thrill ride featuring a top notch cast of up-comers-comers playing deeply unlikable - but incredibly sexy - people, who are all (in the words of our guest) "acting their asses off."We discuss the sensational young cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Ryan Phillippe, and an exceptional Sarah Michelle Gellar, and find delights in the "teens play-acting adults" uncanniness of the movie's milieu. Then we revel in the film's preternatural handling on eroticism and desire, finding ways to constantly steam up the screen even while the actors (mostly) keep their clothes on. Finally, we find a through-line from some of Vera's other favorite films to Cruel Intentions, note how the movie defies a "so bad its good" valuation, and illimunate why criticisms of the film's supposed moralism might be reading it wrong. The People's Joker is still in theaters and now available on VOD, Blu-Ray and VHS! The second part of My Favorite Summer brings the drama this week -- as the Deucecast Movie Show crew gives their own list of the serious stories from the world of cinema. Joining Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl is the co-host of the Good Day 4 a Movie Podcast, Jacob Roth, aka Roth from Wyoming, as they chit-chat and then play a round of a game not played in these here parts in a while -- The Ryan Phillippe Game returns for the first time since 2022. Then, the Top Ten Fave Dramatic Films... everyone has their own description, as some movies may be more of a dramedy than a drama... or maybe it's listed under drama for one, but will be in another category for another. Legendary films like The Godfather make a few lists, 90s capers like True Romance is discussed, a tragedy unfolds in one film, a fort is defending in another, and movies from as far back as 1966 are covered, all the way up to last year.
Ryan Phillippe and Benecio Del Toro are scumbags who probably smell real bad. They commit crimes and kill people for money. They kidnap Juliette Lewis to ransom her to Herschel from the Walking Dead cause she is full of baby. But he is a gangster or something, so he has henchmen (Taye Diggs, Nicky Katt and the James Caan). Things will probably work out great for everyone. Also, Juliette Lewis's dad is in this and he is playing a game of which gun has bullets while he clicks them to his head. I'm freshly 18 when this comes out and I really wanna see it. Why? Cause that lady is yelling at them so mean and then they punch her in the face. Yep. That's what appealed to me at 18. The worst part of it is that I then didn't like the movie cause it wasn't as fun as the opening. So here we are, 24 years later and it's a Jules pick. And boy is this thing loaded with 2k dialog. They be saying bad words left and right. But also? Jesus christ this thing is great. CATS OUT OF THE BAG! Please do rate, review, and subscribe. If you leave a review on Apple podcasts, you can pick a movie and we'll do an episode on it. Wesley Snipes is around the corner!

NOTE: Boy do we say some stuff in this episode. As always, please keep in mind that the language on this podcast is rated R. For pirates. As adults in their late thirties, Laci and Matt are just the right age to play the “teenager” characters in the sexy cult classic Cruel Intentions (1999). Together, your hosts unpack how differently the movie plays for them as adults (funny) than when they were teenagers (deadly serious), and gush over the deliciously evil performance of Sarah Michelle Gellar. Also, Laci finds this Ryan Phillippe fellow very appealing, but we won't get into that here. You can put this podcast anywhere, but we recommend the ear. Next week: We engaged our listeners to program our next episode, so on this episode you will hear us spin the wheel and land on the winner, and react to it in real time. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Michelle Danner, Director, “Miranda's Victim” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Michelle Danner, is a highly acclaimed, multi-award winning actress, filmmaker and world renowned acting coach. On the stage, she starred in over 30 plays and musicals including Tennessee Williams' “The Rose Tattoo”, “House of Yes”, “Bright Ideas”, “Ibsen's Ghosts”, and “One White Crow”. She's also directed many award winning stage productions including “The Night of the Black Cat”, “Mental the Musical”, “You're on the Air”, and “Jane Fonda in the Court of Public Opinion.” On the big screen, she's appeared in several movies by other directors, including “Reach” and “Ovation”, as well as in many of her own movies, including “How to Go Out on a Date in Queens”, “Hello Herman”, “The Bandit Hound”, “Bad Impluse”, and “The Runner”. Her movies have won a staggering 56 awards at some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. She's here to discuss her latest film, entitled “Miranda's Victim”, which in my opinion, is an absolute masterpiece. The movie tells the true story of the origins of the “Miranda warning”, which the police must give to every criminal suspect and accused person, that they have the right to remain silent, and that anything they say can be used against them in a court of law. Until our guest made this movie, most people had no idea about the circumstances behind the landmark 1966 US Supreme Court ruling in the Miranda case – circumstances involving the horrific kidnapping and rape by Mr. Miranda, of Patricia Weir in Phoenix, Arizona in 1963. This riveting movie, starring Abigail Breslin, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe and Kyle MacLachlan, tells the jaw dropping story of the many astonishing twists and turns throughout the groundbreaking court case, from the perspective of Ms. Weir, the victim. The movie, which is available for streaming on Hulu, has won 15 film festival awards, and has been universally praised not only by film critics, but also by leading members of the legal profession and justice system. In addition to being a highly acclaimed stage director and filmmaker, our guest is also a renowned acting coach. She's given acting workshops around the world and she's worked with many A-list actors including Donald Sutherland, Henry Cavill, Gerard Butler, Penelope Cruz, Andy Garcia, Salma Hayek and many others. She teaches classes at the Michelle Danner Studio and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory. She's also the Founding Director of the Creative Center for the Arts, where she has served as Artistic Director for more than 20 years. In July 2003, Vanity Fair, whether intentionally or not, put together the most monumental photoshoot in history. A photoshoot like nothing that had ever been done before and, dare we say, could never be done again. A photoshoot so deeply iconic, every pop culture loving person still knows 20 years later: "It's Totally Raining Teens."On that fateful day in 2003, Amanda Bynes, Mandy Moore, Hilary Duff, Alexis Bledel, Evan Rachel Wood, Raven, Lindsay Lohan, and our gals Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, wearing metallics and soft pinks, posed for in the same room together for this iconic cover. The inside of the magazine was bursting with even more teens (and shockingly some twenty-somethings) including Brittany Snow, Solange Knowles, Christina Milian, Shia LaBeouf, Bow Wow, Aaron Carter, the Harry Potter kids, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padelecki, Kaley Cuoco, and even more teens I'm too tired to name! It was literally raining teens! Every teen was also asked what kind of cell phone they used, if they preferred Britney or Christina, and how many Juicy Couture outfits they owned. It was the most 2003 thing that has ever 2003'd, and we are obsessed with it.Why did this happen? We may never know. But what we do know is that this little time capsule is one of the most important documents in modern history. So we read through every profile, contemplate every photograph, and much like we did in 2003, try to decipher secrets of culture and girlhood that we know this magazine holds. If you, like us, have tragically misplaced your original hard copy of this iconic issue, you can read it along with us this link from Simply Olsen (our Olsen media lord and savior). You can watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here. Some other links we talk about: Lindsay Lohan reflects on the cover Hilary Duff reflects on ‘anxiety-inducing' Vanity Fair cover Evan Rachel Wood, The Real Story Behind That Iconic 'Raining Teens' Vanity Fair CoverFind us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsDo you know if Juicy Couture sponsored the "It's Totally Raining Teens" issue? “Miranda's Victim” is a new feature film thoughtfully directed by Michelle Danner with a heavy hitting cast starring Abigail Breslin, Mireille Enos, Emily VanCamp, Ryan Phillippe, Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland and Kyle MacLachlan. If you've watched any crime show, chances are you've heard the Miranda warning which starts “You have the right to remain silent…” But do you know where it came from and who “Miranda” was? If you thought Miranda was an innocent victim who was perhaps falsely accused of a crime you'd be mistaken. Lisa sits down with executive producer and writer George Kolber of “Miranda's Victim” to talk about the true story of who the real victim was at the heart of the ground breaking legal challenge. In 1963, 18 year old Trisha Weir was on her way home from her job at a local Phoenix Arizona movie theater when she was abducted off the street, driven out into the desert and raped by Ernesto Miranda, a man who already had a history of crime including stalking and sexual assault. The police were able to zero in on Miranda, bring him into a line up where Trisha identified him and shortly thereafter he wrote a full confession to the crime without the presence of an attorney. Miranda was convicted, but later his verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court who found that his rights as a suspect had been violated. The film tracks Trisha's journey as she tries heal from her trauma and still pursue justice.
