This week on Culture and Consequence, Andrea and I show up sick, tired, irritated, and absolutely done — which means it's the perfect time to talk about billionaires, state‑run media, and the slow‑motion collapse of American democracy. Happy Thursday. We start with Stephen Colbert's final show on CBS and why his removal should terrify anyone who cares about free speech. Then we get into Mark Cuban standing next to Donald Trump like a confused extra in his own downfall. Spoiler: if you're a billionaire, you didn't “earn” it — and yes, I'm still dying on that hill.We also break down the absolutely unhinged $1.776 billion “Anti‑Weaponization Fund” settlement — a taxpayer‑funded slush pile dressed up as patriotism — and why it's one of the most openly corrupt moves we've seen yet. And that's saying something.Plus: why we named the show Culture and Consequence, why politics is doing you whether you “do politics” or not, and why your local elections matter more than you think. If you're overwhelmed, angry, exhausted, or just trying to understand what the hell is happening in this country, pull up a chair. Pam Bondi is out, making her the shortest-tenured confirmed attorney general in 60 years. Her portrait was photographed in a trash can at the DOJ the very next day. Todd Blanch, Trump's own criminal defense attorney from the 34-felony-count trial, is now acting attorney general. His first two official acts: declare that Trump can take classified documents when he leaves office, including war plans against Iran shown to golfing buddies, and announce he will not release any further Epstein files, in direct violation of the Epstein Files Transparency Act that Trump himself signed into law. Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace is pushing forward with the Pam Bondi subpoena regardless, noting it was issued by name, not by title. Trump's name appears over one million times in the three million pages of released Epstein documents, more than anyone except Epstein himself, beating out Prince Andrew. On the mail-in ballot executive order, election law expert David Becker is 100% confident it will be blocked. The Constitution grants zero authority to the president over elections. Three courts have already blocked a prior version. The new one is already facing multiple lawsuits filed within 36 hours of signing. Solartopia Green Power & Wellness Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2026 131:27

Quick recap The meeting focused on two major topics: voting rights and nuclear power. The discussion began with concerns about ICE's presence at polling places and the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration. The group then explored the dangers of reopening aging nuclear power plants, particularly Palisades in Michigan, where Holtec International faces significant challenges in meeting safety standards and documentation requirements. The conversation highlighted how both Democratic and Republican leaders are supporting nuclear power despite its cost and safety issues, with Trump personally taking control of nuclear regulations. The conversation ended with concerns about California's Democratic Party platform, which removed environmental protections and nuclear power restrictions, and the need for a renewed focus on solar and wind energy over nuclear power. Next steps Hedy Tripp: Persuade Minneapolis training organizers to consider putting their in-person ICE resistance training sessions on the internet (e.g., Zoom, Instagram) for broader access, as requested by Sunny. Andrea Miller: Share the link to the Virginia redistricting presentation in the chat and host the presentation on Thursday night as announced. Ellen Slavick: Put the link to the "Atomic Dragons by Swans" art exhibition at Pitzer College in the chat (confirmed done during meeting). Vina Colley: Connect with Ellen Slavick (and her husband) regarding radiation exposure assessment work and share relevant links or information as requested. Dorothy Reik and Susie Shannon: Reach out to the new Environmental Caucus chair (Sam) to educate him on the facts about nuclear energy and work to reintroduce anti-nuclear language into the California Democratic Party platform. Roger Rapoport, Susan Shapiro, Karl Grossman, and Sunny: Collaborate on writing and publicizing the findings about Holtec/Palisades and the lack of documentation, targeting both public education and the financial/investor community. Team: Organize and promote participation in the No King's Day march (March 28th) and link nuclear safety concerns to Donald Trump's role in nuclear regulation for public education. Team: Attempt to contact Joe Rogan (and/or Stuart Brand) to engage in public discussion/debate on nuclear issues, as suggested by David Saltman. Vina Colley: Work with Veterans for Peace, Chris Busby, and Paul Mobley to develop and share materials calculating radiation exposure for affected communities. Team: Revisit and discuss Don Mosier's research on low-dose radiation and breast cancer in a future meeting, as suggested by Myla. Karl Grossman: Publish and distribute the article on New York's nuclear push and the climate change misinformation to national outlets after Long Island distribution. Team: Focus public education efforts on the true emissions and climate impact of nuclear energy, as highlighted by Susan Shapiro and Karl Grossman. Summary Team Meeting and Event Planning The meeting began with greetings and technical adjustments, including addressing audio issues for Myla. Gree-Gree and Harvey discussed editing a video, which caused some frustration. The group briefly touched on current events, such as the Texas gubernatorial race and a power outage at a nuclear plant in Delaware. Hedy shared her experience attending a conference in Southern California. As the conversation ended, participants prepared for an upcoming event, with Sunny and others discussing logistics and welcoming attendees. Election and Nuclear Power Concerns The meeting focused on two main topics: election protection and nuclear power issues. The group discussed concerns about ICE presence at polling stations in 2026 and Trump's efforts to eliminate voting by mail. They also addressed the situation in Minneapolis, where Hedy Tripp reported on weekly rallies and a planned week-long training session for resistance activities. The second hour of the meeting will cover nuclear power issues, including the restart of the reactor at Three Mile Island and the Palisades nuclear plant situation. Vote-by-Mail and ICE Election Impact Melissa Bird, a candidate for Congress in Oregon's 4th Congressional District, discussed concerns about vote-by-mail processes and the potential impact of ICE presence on elections. She emphasized the importance of early voting and ensuring ballots are sent directly to county election offices due to changes in postal rules and the presence of ICE in Oregon. Andrea Miller, an expert on voting in the Southeast, expressed concerns about the reliability of vote-by-mail systems and recommended in-person early voting where possible. Melissa also announced endorsements from Progressive Victory and the Working Families Party of Oregon, adding to her growing support. SAVE Act Senate Passage Uncertainty Andrea discussed the passage of the SAVE Act in the House and its challenges in the Senate, highlighting concerns about proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration, which disproportionately affect women, rural residents, and people in poverty. Melissa emphasized the bill's impact on marginalized communities and criticized it as an overreach of federal authority in managing elections. Sunny inquired about the likelihood of the bill passing the Senate, and Andrea noted the uncertainty but expressed skepticism about Democrats supporting it, given potential legal challenges and opposition from both Democratic and Republican states. ICE's Impact on Voting Rights The meeting focused on discussions about ICE's presence in various states and its potential impact on voting rights. Participants expressed concerns about ICE's role in communities, particularly in low-income and minority areas, and discussed legislative efforts to restrict ICE activities. The group also touched on recent FBI raids on voting centers in Georgia and the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms to protect voting rights. Paul Johnson raised concerns about government subsidies for AI farms, and the conversation ended with a brief discussion about voting issues in California and the need for effective pushback against voter suppression efforts. Election Integrity and Voting Rights The group discussed voting rights and election integrity, with Lynn Feinerman sharing progress in Marin County where the county executive has removed ICE cooperation funding from the budget. Susie Shannon emphasized that once voters are prevented from casting their ballot on Election Day, there is no remedy for individual voters, while Paul Newman highlighted the need to address private prisons and their role in the criminal justice system. The conversation ended with Andrea Miller announcing her upcoming discussion on Virginia redistricting and warning about new election legislation that would require proof of citizenship and residence for voting. Voter Rights and Energy Concerns The group discussed voter suppression efforts and the importance of protecting and turning out the vote in upcoming elections. They highlighted the need for on-the-ground solutions to combat voter intimidation and the challenges faced by certain demographics in accessing polling places. The conversation then shifted to energy issues, including the transition to sodium-based batteries and the dangers of Donald Trump's regulation of nuclear power plants. The conversation ended with a brief mention of an upcoming art exhibit at Pitzer College. Palisades Nuclear Plant Restart Challenges The meeting focused on the challenges and risks associated with the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan, which has been shut down due to safety and economic issues. Roger Rapoport explained that Holtec International, the plant's owner, has faced significant delays and financial challenges in attempting to restart the plant, with estimated costs of up to $1.25 billion for repairs and further delays of up to five years. The discussion highlighted broader concerns about the nuclear industry, including the lack of economic rationale for nuclear power compared to renewables, the safety risks associated with nuclear plants, and the influence of political leaders and the energy industry in promoting nuclear energy despite these challenges. The group also discussed similar issues at other nuclear plants, such as Indian Point in New York, and emphasized the need for independent regulation and transparency in the nuclear industry. Exploring Solar vs Nuclear Energy The group discussed nuclear power policies, with Susie Shannon explaining that the California Democratic Party's platform was weakened by removing protections for underserved communities and environmental measures, including nuclear energy safety provisions. They explored the possibility of shifting focus to solar energy as a more viable alternative to nuclear power, noting that solar technology has become significantly more cost-effective than nuclear. Ellen Slavick shared information about her husband's work on a UN radiation study that concluded there is no safe threshold for nuclear exposure, and mentioned an upcoming art exhibition at Pitzer College featuring work by seven women artists related to nuclear issues. Nuclear Safety and Regulatory Concerns The group discussed concerns about nuclear power plants, including inadequate record-keeping, missing welding documents, and the risks of accidents. They highlighted the need to address these issues, with David suggesting buying shares in companies like Holtec to influence decisions. The conversation also touched on the lack of regulation under Trump's administration and the potential for accidents, with Karl noting that extending the life of old plants is "asking for a catastrophe." The group agreed that they are now in "25th Amendment territory" due to these risks and the need to convince policymakers to change course. Nuclear Industry's Public Perception The group discussed the nuclear industry's financial viability and public perception, with Susan Shapiro emphasizing the need to educate the public about nuclear power's emissions and carbon footprint. They agreed to link nuclear safety to Donald Trump and planned to participate in the "No Kings, No Nukes" march on March 28th, aiming to draw 10 million people. The group also discussed attacking Joe Rogan's promotion of nuclear power and connecting with the solar industry to highlight nuclear's cost issues. Vina mentioned working with Veterans for Peace to calculate radiation exposure levels, and Tatanka shared information about a 50-year energy plan by big oil companies to control the world's energy supply.

The Supreme Court, in an interim order on Thursday (August 14, 2025), directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publish a booth-wise list of nearly 65 lakh electors who were excluded from the draft electoral roll released on August 1 as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar. A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi ordered that the list must specify the precise reasons for exclusion, such as death, migration, or duplicate registration. The petitioners have argued that the poll body has failed to observe the basic principles of natural justice while carrying out the exercise. They have also questioned the “hasty” manner of its implementation. What is the constitutionality of the SIR exercise, and does it risk disenfranchising voters? What are the implications of the interim order? To what extent does the order address the contentious debate over whether Aadhaar can serve as valid proof of identity and residence in the electoral process? In the early hours of January 14, 2024 the Department of Justice released its long-awaited election interference report against President-elect Donald Trump. It was a long and winding road to that moment—and one marked, ultimately, by justice delayed. In November 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee criminal investigations by the Justice Department into former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his retention of classified documents. The two cases were brought in different jurisdictions—with charges for the classified documents case filed in Florida and the elections case in Washington, D.C. After false starts, the blockbuster Supreme Court ruling on July 1, 2024 that former President Trump is entitled to some immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and the subsequent re-election of Trump in November, Smith and the DOJ dropped both cases. They analyze why the special counsel avoided certain charges and the challenges of applying existing statutes to unprecedented events.(00:16:30) Chapter 5: The Supreme Court's Role and the Impact on ProsecutionThe conversation explores delays caused by the Supreme Court, including its handling of presidential immunity. Karlan and Sklansky explain how these rulings affected timelines and created legal ambiguities that could influence appeals and the overall process.(00:19:00) Chapter 6: Restoring Trust in Criminal Justice and DemocracyKarlan and Sklansky shift focus to broader implications for democracy, discussing how Trump's prosecutions might deepen distrust in institutions. They consider paths to reform, including bipartisan efforts to reinforce the rule of law and community policing. While our weekly shows are edited to time for broadcast on Public TV and community radio, we offer to our members and podcast subscribers the full uncut conversation.  The following is from our episode Reporting on Policing at the Polls & BIPOC Voter Suppression in 2024.  And was recorded on September 17th, 2024.  These audio exclusives are made possible thanks to our member supporters.  Become a member at https://LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: Just this month, billionaire immigrant and Republican mega donor Elon Musk amplified a post that seemed to suggest that the system would work better if voting was restricted only to “high status men.” Voting should be simple, but we're seeing more and more barriers — especially for BIPOC voters — this election. From purges of the rolls, to efforts to eliminate same-day voter registration, new voter-ID laws, and vigilante style “election integrity” watchdogs turning up at the polls, voters in many states and tribal nations face serious challenges they're working hard to overcome. What's it all mean for the candidates and, more importantly, the millions of eligible voters of color whose ability to cast their vote could ultimately decide the outcome of this election? For this episode of our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura is joined by co-host Kadia Tubman of the Scripps News broadcast network, along with guests Chenjerai Kumanyika, NYU journalism professor and host of Empire City, a gripping new podcast on the origins of the NY police, and investigative journalist Christopher Lomahquahu of the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism within the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. Together we investigate who gets to vote safely, and who is being excluded from participating in democracy. Will all who want to vote be able to?“. . . Voter disenfranchisement has been so consistent that we might as well go ahead and call it a principle of American so-called democracy. Even in the constitutional convention, we know that there were efforts to make sure that not everyone can vote.” - Chenjerai Kumanyika". . . It wasn't until a hundred years ago that Native Americans were granted citizenship in this country . . . With the [groups] Western Native Voice, Arizona Native Vote, other organizations that you're finding across these different states, they understand that history but it hasn't deterred them from looking ahead as far as what they can do to activate those other voters, especially the youth . . .” - Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi)“Whenever I report on or hear about election integrity or election security, the phrase ‘safe and secure' seems to tag along. It's almost like it's replacing the term free and fair elections . . .” - Kadia TubmanGuests:• Chenjerai Kumanyika: Host, Empire City & NYU Professor• Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi): Investigative Reporter, ASU Howard Center for Investigative Journalism• Kadia Tubman: Disinformation Correspondent, Scripps News Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more. Your favorite hosts are back! Back from their summer hiatus, Tanorria and Candace come back to the airwaves with a summer recap like no other. Catch up with your favorite duo as they share seasonal happenings, birthday shenanigans, and what it feels like to get older. Tanorria digs deep into her garden, and Candace writes to see another day. A Summer of Growth and Engagement After a much-needed summer hiatus, Candace and Tanorria return to the Black Girls Eating podcast with a heartwarming and insightful episode that captures their summer adventures and delves into pressing social issues. Whether you're a long-time listener or new to the podcast, this episode is a perfect blend of personal growth, community engagement, and, of course, delicious food talk.  Candace kicks off the episode by sharing her exciting journey back to school. Enrolled in a dual degree program for a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology, Candace opens up about her passion for bridging the connection between food and faith. Her goal? To create a welcoming table for all of God's people. This journey, she confesses, has been both exhilarating and challenging, but the support she's received has been overwhelmingly positive. "I want to share what it means to create the table and welcome the table to all of God's people," Candace says, encapsulating her mission beautifully. Meanwhile, Tanorria has been busy with her consulting work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Despite the challenges in the current political climate, she finds joy and fulfillment in working with nonprofits that genuinely care about making a difference. Her consulting work has even led her to explore new areas of diversity, such as the aging community, adding another layer of expertise to her already impressive resume. But it's not all work and no play for these dynamic women. Tanorria shares her newfound love for gardening, describing it as a way to connect with her ancestors and find peace. From growing various types of okra to planning a quest for the perfect watermelon, her gardening adventures are as inspiring as they are educational. "I love getting my hands in the dirt and feeling connected to our ancestors," she says, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of gardening. As the episode progresses, the conversation shifts to more serious topics, particularly the importance of civic engagement and voting rights. With the political landscape becoming increasingly volatile, both Candace and Tanorria stress the need for informed voting and active participation in civic duties. They discuss the potential impacts of Project 2025 and urge listeners to educate themselves on the issues at hand. "We would be doing the world a disservice if we didn't at least make mention what it means to have civic leadership and being involved and engaged," Candace asserts, emphasizing the podcast's commitment to social justice. This episode of Black Girls Eating is a testament to the power of community, education, and civic responsibility. It's a reminder that while life can be busy and challenging, there's always room for growth, joy, and making a difference. So, whether you're interested in the intersection of food and faith, looking for gardening tips, or eager to understand the importance of civic engagement, this episode has something for everyone. Many questions remain about the recent attack on North Carolina's electrical grid, which left tens of thousands of citizens unsettled, frightened and without power or heat for days. Officials say it was a “malicious” and “intentional” attack, but who is responsible  for this destruction of vital infrastructure, and what was their motive? In a growing climate of fear and political intimidation, many residents in North Carolina — the most militarized state in the union, where law enforcement officials are active in paramilitary groups such as the Oathkeepers and a white sheriff was recently re-elected despite making racist remarks about Black employees — are deeply concerned and had begun organizing a multi-racial coalition to respond. One example is a series of revelatory “Courageous Conversations.” In this episode, Laura joins one such conversation, featuring Curtis Hill, the head of the Columbus County NAACP and leader of the recall of Jody Greene; Keith Rivers, his counterpart in Pasquotank County; Serena Sebring, the Executive Director of Blueprint NC, the largest coalition of grassroots groups in the state; and writer and organizer Mab Segrest, one of the country's leading right-wing researchers who is also a consultant with Blueprint. How can community safety be ensured in this moment? It will take courage from us all.“This is a full assault on everybody's rights in America. I believe that we have the power as individuals to transform our communities, one person at a time, having real courageous conversations, empowering each other, understanding and being a leaning voice.” - Curtis Hill“That percentage of people that are extremists, we can put them in a box and let people know that they are not the ones running this country. We're not going anywhere.” - Keith Rivers“The questions of sheriff accountability, or responsiveness to the needs of community, which include COVID-19, disaster relief, safety — I know that Black people have to have a seat at that table and be able to express the needs of our communities.” - Serena Sebring“I want the conversation about white courage, and what I learned is white courage is really Black and Brown courage . . . I would invite people into these conversations to take risks, because you would get your life.” - Mab SegrestGuests:Curtis Hill, President, NAACP Columbus County, NCKeith Rivers: President, NAACP Pasquotank County, NC; Director, Sunshine StationSerena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NCMab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant Blueprint NC Help us kick off this holiday season with your good vibrations! Were grassroots activists able to defend democracy in 2022? For this post-election roundtable, Laura convenes organizers to discuss some of the critical takeaways from this year's election. What have grassroots activists on the frontlines of our democracy learned from this significant midterm election when so many of their issues have been weaponized — from criminal justice, the Native vote, women's self determination and racism. Laura is joined by Sakira Cook, the Co-Interim Vice President of Color of Change, who works to overhaul the criminal justice system and safeguard democracy; Jacqueline DeLeón is an enrolled member of the Isleta Pueblo and is an attorney with the Native Rights Fund where she helped lead field hearings across Indian Country on Native American voting rights, and Heidi Sieck, the co-founder of #VOTEPROCHOICE and an organizer in the reproductive rights and feminist movement for over 30 years. Democrats had high expectations on how the GOP's rollbacks on many fronts would mobilize voters. What worked, and what didn't?“We don't have residential mail delivery to many of our homes. We don't have working roads when the election is in November, during the wintertime . . . These types of absurd realities are exploited when you have laws that are designed to make it more difficult for Native Americans specifically to vote.” - Jacqueline DeLeón“The amount of mobilization that abortion was inspiring voters was underestimated and unsupported at scale . . . We knew that this was an activating issue, and we also saw across the board a failure to invest in mobilizing folks that were really angry about this.” - Heidi L. Sieck“The people do not support the things that [extremists] support. They have to try every tactic, changing the laws . . . These are things that should not be happening in our democracy." - Sakira CookGuests:Sakira Cook: Co-Interim Vice President, Color of Change & Senior Director of Government AffairsJacqueline DeLeón (Isleta Pueblo) Is-Let-a: Attorney, Native American Rights FundHeidi L. Monday on Political Rewind: Georgia lawmakers and politicians sound off on a new federal lawsuit challenging state election law. Georgia Republican leaders criticized the Department of Justice decision to file a lawsuit challenging the state's new voting laws. They insist the lawsuit is a partisan effort to upend provisions designed to stop voting fraud.  Also, the state has announced it will halt the rollout of a limited expansion of Medicaid as officials here continue to tussle with the Biden administration over Georgia's proposed work requirement for recipients. In the meantime, Georgia halted the $300 weekly supplemental federal unemployment benefit to residents in the state who are out of work. Finally, panelist Jim Galloway discussed a story related to the current effort to name Sonny Perdue chancellor of the University System of Georgia. A look back into history reveals it's not the first time state leaders have played politics with higher education. Panelists: Dr. Karen Owen — Political Science Professor, University of West Georgia Julianne Thompson — Republican Strategist Dr. Kurt Young — Political Science Professor, Clark-Atlanta University Jim Galloway — Former Political Columnist, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
