A singer who paved the way for the Atlanta hardcore scene when he was a teen, William DuVall ascended to becoming the frontman for Seattle hard rock icons Alice In Chains and the side project Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. Beyond music, he enjoys reading biographies and books about history, a subject for which he has a great interest. I spoke with William in a conference room at the offices of Cheddar TV in New York City. He also revealed the story of how he escaped the failing public school system in Atlanta to attend a private institution that took him on free of charge because of his strong desire to go there. Our guest this episode is Ben Weinman, founding member and leader of the incredible but defunct band The Dillinger Escape Plan. As of late he has been managing artists, raising a family, and managing a farm of rescue animals in rural New Jersey. A TON of energy goes in to maintaining this rescue and I would recommend checking out a little about that HERE. You can support the efforts of this rescue, as well. I love this conversation and we covered a lot of things parallel to lives in music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! William DuVall of AIC joined us to reflect on the past decade with the band. He also talked about opening up for Guns 'N Roses and his new band, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra.
Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to Layne Staley's substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 for a live benefit show, performing with a number of guest vocalists. They toured in 2006, with William DuVall taking over as lead vocalist full-time. The new line-up released the band's fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue, in 2009. The album received gold certification by the RIAA. In 2013, the band released The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, its fifth studio album. The band has toured extensively and released several videos in support of these albums. Alice in Chains is currently doing dates with GNR and William Duvall chats with Slacker about the Tour and Giraffe Tongue Orchestra!
