This week, we've got Steve Moore of Zombi joining us on The MetalSucks Podcast. In our chat, we discuss the band's latest album Direct Inject out this Friday, March 22. We discuss 2024 being the 20th anniversary of Zombi, if he thought that milestone would have happened when the band started as a side project, and how important their label Relapse has been in keeping the band alive. We also discuss some of the approaches Zombi take to make new fans, his experience as a touring musician during the pandemic, the tour with The Sword that brought momentum back to the Zombi camp, what it was like touring with Goblin as a keyboard player, and the future of Zombi and friends releases. Petar and Jozalyn discuss the tragic passing of Blake Harrison, share an email from a fan who went to see Jozalyn do stand up comedy, Mastodon's Troy Sanders being a fantastic Little League Baseball Coach, and Fear Factory wanting a fill in bassist that can drink a bottle of tequila with no negative results. It's always a treat to talk about “hometown” metal, especially when it's one of the heaviest, most modern, progressive metal bands in the entire genre. Actually, to call them “prog” might be a bit misleading, although “progressive” is certainly an apropos descriptor for the shared artistic odyssey which Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders (collectively known as MASTODON) had embarked upon more than 20 years ago and are still going strong with no sign of stopping any time soon.   Perhaps the more accurate description of MASTODON is “Atlanta's own shamans of megalithic, caveman powered, super technical, stoner sludge prog metal” (and any other applicable subgenres we might've missed).   It's time to get “in the loop” and fully comprehend the best way NOT to drive down Blood Mountain to minimize vehicular induced toddler vomitus whilst mentally preparing to welcome “B.G.” to the “T&T Main Stage” as we do our best to “MRFA” while screaming excerpts from “Brave Tales of Taintler” into the “echo chamber” as you JOIN US for the “pure girth” of MASTODON Inside The Metal (ATL-Edition), Chapter 1: The Aughts (2000-2009).   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Mastodon are a musical enigma that has always walked a fine line as a metal band.Fine in respect that some of their music almost has that universal crossover appeal that threatens to break into the hallowed world of mainstream music while still maintaining a chaotic level of disdain. Not that they make a concerted effort to connect with the music going public that generally gravitate in the opposite direction to musicians of their ilk. It's more the fact that to each of the four members creating music is a blessing that is constrained only by the limitations you place upon it.And in the case of Mastodon those limits are non-existent.Their most recent album Emperor of Sand saw Mastodon break musical barriers by featuring in the almost exclusive Billboard charts, while the band were recognized for their efforts with a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance off the back of the albums success.Despite the accolades and industry acceptance not once did anyone dare accuse Mastodon of selling out.Not that it would have bothered them if anyone had. Now, four years later, Mastodon have outdone themselves once more with their new – and first – double album Hushed And Grim which will be out this Friday, October 29.Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders sat down with HEAVY a couple of days ago to introduce us to yet another chapter in the rise of Mastodon."We thankfully had more music than we've ever had before going into a recording session and we were able to use the year 2020 to our advantage,” he said. “All four of us were really excited to work on all these new ideas that we had collected, and it was a good time to do so because all four of us were getting a lot of new ideas and all four of us were writing and collaborating with one another. We were just excited to keep moving forward and not letting the idea that all the touring across the world had just shut down. Having a year to work on loads and loads of music wound up to the idea we're doing a double album. Is that a good idea or a bad idea? (laughs). So here we are and it's about to come out to the world. The four of us are proud of it and that's all that we have in our control."In the full interview, Troy talks through the reasons behind releasing it as a double album, the musical direction of the material, finding the balance of genres within their music, the album cover and how it relates, the band's recent Livestream show from an aquarium, the personal nature of Hushed And Grim and who the album is dedicated to, touring plans and more.

Troy Sanders has been very successful in his sales career at iQor. Troy's career includes an extensive background in professional services, marketing, sales, and operations. He credits trust building as the biggest factor to his success in sales in the BPO industry. In this episode, we examine Troy's strategy that has fueled his success. Troy began his career at AT&T, where he spent fifteen years in various roles. One such role was procurement, where he was responsible for selecting and managing relationships with outsourcing partners who provide outsourced customer service, direct response, and direct fulfillment services. At the time, Troy was working with an outsourcing partner named Interactive Response Technologies (IRT). Troy considered the quality of the people and services delivered by IRT to be the best in the industry. When iQor acquired IRT, he got the chance to learn more about the company, culture, and service offerings. He decided to join iQor to represent those services in the market as Vice President of Business Development. Secret Sauce to Sales Success Troy has been successful in his sales role at iQor because of his ability to build trust with clients. Many of the people Troy interacts with are in positions he has previously held in his career. Consequently, Troy has the knowledge and skills to understand what it takes to enhance his client's end-customer experience. In short, he's walked in their shoes, so he understands the scope of work needed to design customer care solutions that meet his client's needs. Teamwork in BPO Sales Troy acknowledges that CX technology and the family-like culture at iQor are a great recipe for team selling and support. It starts with senior leadership and transcends throughout the organization and to frontline employees serving as the voice of the customer. He attributes this culture to great communication across the organization that drives smiles and happy customer experiences supported by processes and tools that make agents effective at their job. Bringing All the Experience Together Troy works with clients such as big-box retailers and emergency road assistance brands. We hear about the formation of the band, that dates back to the last decade, the way in which Max and Greg roped in Mastodon’s Troy Sanders and Coverge’s Ben Koller, and how they finally feel that KBK is a proper band that are (fingers crossed) in it for the long haul. Celebrating the second release by Killer Be Killed, Reluctant Hero, we discuss Troy's desire to do a full tour with the band despite it being seen as a side project, having a total of 12 active bands between Killer Be Killed's four members, and how the writing process is different with all the vocalists he works with in each project. We also talk about how he prefers to write with the energy of people in the same room instead of file sharing, an update on new music from Gone is Gone and Mastodon, and the positive aspect of creating and releasing new music during the pandemic. Petar, Brandon, and Sylvia discuss metal musicians' reactions to Joe Biden becoming the 46th president of the United States, System of a Down releasing new music for a great cause after 15 years, and a German study saying Covid-19 has a "very low" risk of spreading at indoor concerts if certain precautions are taken. Killer Be Killed took the music world by storm with their 2014 self-titled debut.Featuring the cream of metal in Max Cavalera, Greg Puciato, Troy Sanders and Dave Elitch, the band was an instant success, unfortunately touring minimally because of the commitments each member had to their respective bands.Whispers of hope have been circulating almost weekly since, with each perceived hint at new music generally failing to come to fruition. Then, as if out of nowhere, Killer Be Killed dropped the single "Deconstructing Self-Destruction" and the juggernaut that had slowly ground to a halt suddenly gained momentum with the announcement not long after that the band would be releasing their much anticipated second album Reluctant Hero on November 20."It's something that we've been working on scattered over bits and pieces of time for the last five years," Sanders revealed, "which really started... our one and only album came out in 2014 and in 2015 we did our first and only tour on the Soundwave tour across Australia and when we left Australia we all said to one another we will continue, we're gonna do another record, and we will continue to tour. It's not a matter of IF, just a matter of WHEN, so it's taken six years since our first album but we all share the same dedication and perseverance to make it happen and now we're lucky enough to be here talking about it. I'm very, very proud of my bandmates."While often separated by large distances due to vastly different schedules, Killer Be Killed slowly assembled fresh material for another album, preferring to allow new music to grow at its own volition rather than force anything out."We always wrote everything together in the same room as one another in these bits and pieces over the last five years," he said, "so that had to remain intact because that's the best kind of energy and collaboration that we could share. We just wanted to make sure that we were having fun and every one of us enjoyed the riffs, all the song structures, all the vocal patterns, all the song titles - just everything. We wanted to be super proud of it, that was the whole point of putting this band together in the first place is that we wanted to have the same feeling as when we formed out very first band as teenagers. We wanted to jam with friends that we enjoyed being with, writing music that makes us feel good, keeping the simplicity very much intact. It maintained that the whole time and I'm glad that all four of us are still interested in doing this band because I've said before that none of us really NEED this band but all of us really, really WANT this band so that's kind of special right there in itself."Despite continued questioning of each band member that seemingly intensified with each passing year, Killer Be Killed elected not to disclose or give updated statements on the new album, not wanting to raise their fans hopes and/or expectations."That was actually a decision that I brought to the guys several years ago," he nodded. "I knew this was gonna take us a long time to piece together because we are so busy with our other bands that we're in. Although I am not on social media I know that everyone else is so I said what do you guys think of the idea of not saying that we're working on stuff because I feared that the handful of people that really cared about it and would get excited were the people that were excited when we got together years ago and wrote these songs and that sometimes it would take over a year to write more stuff and over time people would say are you still doing that? Is it still happening? And it would be drawn out and i felt it wasn't important to get anyone excited about small bits of productivity that we were doing so I said why don't we not mention it to anybody until we have a full album. The whole point was to do it in one deal and come out with the announcement and say here it is to have that impact and those guys agreed with me and we kept it secret - not that it was a huge deal - but we just didn't want people that cared about it to get the feeling that they don't belong."In the full interview, Sanders talks more about the album, details the title track "Reluctant Hero", discusses their Australian tour and how it gave the band hope for the future, working alongside some of the best musicians in metal, discusses each member and what they bring to the band and more.

"It has its challenges, I'll tell you that!" laughed Mark Menghi, one of four core members of all-star heavy band Metal Allegiance, when pressed on the difficulties of writing music for a band with no set frontman. "Again, it comes down to - at least for me anyway - one of the hardest parts and probably the most satisfying part at the same time, is having that ability to write lyrics for completely different singers. Say, someone like Bobby Blitz versus Troy Sanders, you couldn't get any more different vocally than those two guys and it's trying to get the correct words and phrasing that's gonna fit their vocal capabilities. It's definitely tricky, and when you perform live it's awesome because you have a whole all-star cast of characters up there but yet the music is the same and the message is different yet vastly similar so it is tricky but also pretty awesome when we complete it and we get to line up all these different singers on stage. We're a band that has a million different singers so instead of one lead singer syndrome we have about thirty (laughs)."In the full interview Mark outlines how the creative process differs writing for different vocalists, the different things he gets musically out of working with some of the best in the business, the process of selecting vocalists, which artist he fanboyed over, how they kept so many egos's in check, who he wants to work with on future albums, the possibility of an Australian tour and an in-depth analysis on each member of Metal Allegiance and what they bring to the table.
