Welcome to Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! On this week's episode, Beth and Caroline sit down with 2-time Emmy Award Winner, Henry Bronchtein, a longtime producer and director whose career spans decades and includes classic movies and TV shows like Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, the HBO hit, The Sopranos, and Paramount hit, EVIL. Henry is the definition of having seen it all and done it all, and we thank him for his generous time and speaking with us. Listen in for another "can't miss" interview from Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home! The Interview with Henry begins at Time Code: 4:53 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: henry bronchtein Henry Bronchtein was born and raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sons of a cab-driver father and a homemaker. Henry attended New York University's Tisch School of The Arts to study filmmaking. Perhaps his first big break was working on Raging Bull (1980), as the apprentice assistant director to fellow NYU alumnus, Martin Scorsese. "As a child I was an avid reader, devouring every novel and every comic book put in front of me. I am a member of the first generation to be raised on television. Growing up my favorite shows were Rod Serling 's The Twilight Zone (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), I Love Lucy (1951), and The Honeymooners (1955). I particularly loved Jackie Gleason''s vision of the working-class life of a bus driver living in Bensonhurst. It not only made me laugh it seemed to illustrate and illuminate my life. "When I was sick, my mother would go to the corner candy store and buy every comic book on the stand for me. She would install me on the living room couch, in front of the TV with them. There I'd lay with a blanket, a pillow and a glass of hot tea laced with a teaspoon of cognac; this was the prescription for healing. I would rest there for hours, reading and watching television, engrossed in the worlds of drama and comedy. At an early age I experienced their ability to reach me in important ways." ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. Michigan Police get a ton of Calls after a Taxidermist drives around with a Dead Giraffe in his truck.
Giraffe's Cardiovascular System: Ever wonder how a giraffe manages to bend down for a drink without passing out like your uncle after Thanksgiving dinner? Guest host Ryan Williams joins Fred to go over the latest Creation Magazine. They begin with the incredible design of the giraffe's cardiovascular system, which allows it to handle sky-high blood pressure without blowing a gasket. Ants' Survival Strategies: If ants had medical degrees, they'd probably put some human surgeons to shame! These tiny insect paramedics identify wounded nest mates and even perform amputations—without malpractice lawsuits. Mudskippers' Blinking Mechanism: Mudskippers blink, but not because they just heard another far-fetched evolutionary tale. Unlike fish, which don't normally need to moisturize their eyes, mudskippers have a built-in design that lets them blink using pre-existing muscles—no need for an "evolutionary upgrade" here! Animals' Inherent Fear of Humans: Animals instinctively fear humans, which might explain why your neighbor's cat disappears the moment you try to pet it (or Fred has other ideas related to 4th and long in Football). Complexity of DNA Coding: If you thought learning one language was hard, try being DNA—it speaks multiple languages at the same time! Fred and Ryan break down new research revealing the incredible complexity of genetic coding, proving that DNA is more like a sophisticated programming language than a random jumble of letters. So much for "junk" DNA—it turns out, every bit of it has a purpose!

“So if you were a giraffe or an elephant you would go along in your world and you would consume things off of trees. And so we try to mimic, as best we can, what we call browse, which is edible tree material.”This week on the show, Toby Foster talks with Barbara Henry at the Cincinnati Zoo. She's the one who figures out what each of the animals need to eat, where to source their food and the best ways to feed the animals to ensure that they thrive.

Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. From his teenage days interning at Shakespeare Santa Cruz to his collaborations with Beth on Rare Objects and Starz's Run The World and, to most recently, working on Disney's fantastic 2024 film, Out of My Mind, Michael has seemingly done it all in the business. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season! The Interview with Michael begins at Time Code: 6:06 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities. Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. Dr. Dan interviews the astonishing activist, author, TEDx speaker, and social entrepreneur Ann Medlock. An editor, speaker, educator and Founder of the Giraffe Heroes Project, Ann lives fully every single day grounding herself in Ram Daas' “be here now” and does so in her signature constantly moving pace. Ann and Dan discuss living with courage, listening to “the force” (#StarWars), embracing flow state, and as Gloria Steinam said about her poetry “...turning poetry into real life, and real life into poetry." This lively, alive conversation reminds us that we have a finite time in this world so let's embrace all there is to see, do, and learn. Ann tells us to live fearlessly and intentionally at 20, 30, 50, 70, or almost 92 (like Ann) and always “do the next right thing.” Please listen, follow, rate, and review Make It a Great One on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Today on the show, I get to talk with the king of whimsy himself, Bob Goff. This is his third time back to That Sounds Fun and he's always a good friend to us and a really wise voice we can learn from. His new book Catching Whimsy is a 365 day devotional challenging us to intentionally live a life full of kindness and wonder and, of course, some whimsy too. He shares stories of visiting prisons in a Santa Claus suit, building a giraffe habitat, and encourages us to get curious about other people. I think you'll really like this one. . . . . . This episode of the Homeschool Better Together Podcast features a delightful conversation with Sarah Mackenzie from the Read Aloud Revival. Sarah and I chat about rekindling the joy of reading for ourselves as moms. We explore the power of quitting books that don't spark joy, the fun of keeping a reading log, and how to find books that truly resonate with you. Plus, we dive into reading challenges—are they motivating or just another checklist? Spoiler: we both have strong opinions! We also talk about Sarah's exciting projects with Waxwing Books, including a middle-grade fantasy novel perfect for family read-alouds. If your reading life needs a little inspiration or you're searching for the perfect book list, this episode is packed with ideas and encouragement to get you turning pages again.Key Takeaways:Rekindle your love for reading by giving yourself permission to quit books that don't excite you.A simple reading log can help you reflect on and savor what you've read.Waxwing Books' upcoming middle-grade fantasy, Beyond Mulberry Glen, is an excellent family read-aloud.Reading challenges can be fun if approached with flexibility—don't let them feel like a burden.Key Resources:Homeschool Better Together PodcastReadAloudRevival.comRead-Aloud Revival PodcastWaxwing Books"Dear Duck, Please Come" by Sarah Mackenzie"Beyond Mulberry Glen" by Millie Florence"The Myth Makers, The Remarkable Fellowship of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien" by John Hendricks"The Lively Art of Writing" by Lucille Van Paine"84 Charing Cross Road" by Helene Hanff"West with Giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge"The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown"The Women" by Kristin Hannah"4:50 from Paddington: A Miss Marple Mystery" by Agatha Christie"The Wishing Game" by Meg Shaffer"Impossible Creatures" by Katherine Rundle"Only the Beautiful" by Susan Meissner"All It Takes is a Goal" by John AcuffFor full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to pambarnhill.com/hsbt27To join our free homeschool community,
