For the episode we're continuing our conversation with Rick Hester, Amy Shilze and Lucy Butler. Rick is the Curator of Behavioral Husbandry for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado. He oversees all the zoo's behavioral programming. His work includes the zoo's animal training for husbandry, medical, and public show behaviors, enrichment, developing programs to improve problem behavior situations, the zoo's formal animal welfare assessments, and exhibit design for behavior goals. We're also joined by Amy Schilze, who has the dream job of working with the Cheyenne Mountain zoo's giraffe. Amy is the Senior Animal Behaviorist for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe, where she runs giraffe workshops and conferences, both stateside and internationally. Both Rick and Amy also partner with Dr. Susan Friedman and her Behavior Works consulting team so you'll hear a lot of references to Susan throughout this conversation. In addition to Rick and Amy, I invited Lucy Butler to join us. Lucy and her husband run the River Haven Animal Sanctuary in Rhode Island. I knew she would have a lot of questions for Rick and Amy. When you take in animals who are the victims of abuse, there's a lot to be learned from the work that goes on in zoos to reduce the stress of handling and also to improve the overall quality of life for the animals under their care. In this episode Rick and Amy talk about the educational programs which are woven into the experience Guests have as they tour the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. There are twenty-three shows for the public every day. In these shows the animals are the star. It is about showing what they can do, what their natural behaviors are - all while protecting the dignity of the animals. The shows at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo show animals controlling their reinforcers and using their bodies in ways that are natural to them. Trainers interpret both what their life in the zoo looks like, what their life in the wild environment looks like, and how capable they are of learning. They are trying to create connections between the public and the animals at the zoo in a way that elevates the animal. For Lucy this part of the conversation was especially relevant because the public is invited in to tour the River Haven Animal Sanctuary that she and her husband run. She was getting many great ideas for how they can make this experience better both for their guests and their resident animals. But even if you don't give tours, there's much here that can be used to enrich your horse's life. We begin the episode with a discussion of techniques used to introduce new animals into an existing social group.

Fresh off a major career decision I was joined by recently retired Ladies European Tour pro and 2024 Fidelity ADT Ladies Challenge champion Helen Tamy Kreuzer in what was a great chat as we dive straight into Helen's decision to end her professional golf career after 4 years as a pro which includes over 65+ starts on Ladies European Tour & Ladies European Tour Access Series amassing 11 Top 25 finishes between both tours including a career high T11th finish on LET at KPMG Women's Irish Open in 2022 & 3rd as a team at Aramco Team Series in Jeddah with Virginia Elena Carta & Lina Boqvist.  Helen is from Bensheim, Germany around about half an hour away from the city of Frankfurt where she has a great attachment to Frankfurt Golf Club. Helen would go to Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida & would win prestigious titles such as 2019 NCAA Div 2 South Regionals, 2021 South State Conference Championship & 2021 NCAA Div 2 Championship as well as representing Germany at for 2x European Ladies' Amateur Team Championship in 2020 at Uppsala in Sweden & 2021 at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland teaming with the likes of Alexandra Forsterling, Aline Krauter, Polly Mack & Sophie Witt.  Helen would turn pro in 2021 & would gain her LET tour card for 2022 where she would start her LET journey in a the picturesque Magical Kenya Open while coming across wildlife such as Zebras & Giraffes. 2022 was a successful rookie year which includes results such as 35th at Joburg Ladies Open, 34th at SA Open, 27th at Madrid Open, 20th at Jabra Ladies Open, 31st at Italian Open, 15th at Big Green Egg Open, 11th at KPMG Women's Irish Open, 24th at Hero Indian Open & 28th individual at Aramco Series in Jeddah. Some other highlights on LETAS would be 2nd at PGA Championship Goteborg in 2024,  Helen has a distinct passion for College Golf and openly acknowledges her roots & is looking at taking exams for future coaching privileges. It was great to speak with Helen to reflect on a big career change, I wish her all the best going forward. In this episode Rick and Amy talk about fine-tuning what a “no response” looks like and what handlers should do when they see the first signs of an animal saying “no”. As they fine tuned their understanding of “no” responses, they were actually describing an operationalized behavior that is “yes”. What does it look like for an animal to say “yes” Assent is a behavior the learner performs and continues to perform that lets us know we can continue. When they stop performing that behavior, assent is withdrawn, so we have to withdraw. This is the process that the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo trainers follow. Relief is readily available to the animal learners. Across species in a system where relief is abundantly available and there are strong reinforcers at a high rate for opting in, most animals opt in more and opt out less. After Rick and Amy describe the training that they are doing at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, we switch the focus to horse training. Letting horses opt out runs counter to traditional horse training methods. But certainly we know that horses also opt in more when they have the option of saying “no”. Pieter Swart, the President of the South Africa Taxidermy and Tanners Association, joins Robbie this week to discuss a recent proposal by the organization to delist giraffes from Appendix II protections. This proposal and its science were put forward to the DFFE (Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment) in South Africa, and the governmental agency has agreed and has moved the proposal forward to be reviewed, discussed, and voted on at the CITES COP in November in Uzbekistan. There is no reason this proposal shouldn't be adopted and approved by CITES. The science is there, CITES requirements have been met, and the proposal is going forward. At CITES, the requirement to pass is a two-thirds majority vote—which is the political gamesmanship of South Africa up against a global political machine to fight for the science. When I first came across my guest on social media, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. His interactions with the animals wasn't only unique and intriguing, but I found a sense of calm come over me. Plume was lucky enough to have been surrounded by women all of his life. These same women are a big part of how and why he's on this journey now.  I'm so happy we were able to have a conversation, not only about his new bond with his animal audience, but he's also lending a different perspective on life and what's important. My guest's videos have a very calming effect on his audience. Yet, in seeing how the animals interact with Plume brings a smile to my face and a more human perspective to the magic of the beautiful four and two legged creatures he interacts with.Currently, Valerie, Plume's mother, is part of his production crew, as his camera-woman. She has always been very supportive of his work.His maternal grandmother, Paule and her three sisters helped raise Plume since a child.  Paule is still very present in his life today. She plays the piano and has a wonderful sense of humor and attitude about life. And we also had an opportunity to hear about Elsa, Plume's girlfriend, who Plume says is a constant source of support and love. As a creative, Plume says "it can be hard to believe in yourself and in what you're doing," and Elsa has always been there to encourage him.Growing up in France, Plume was introduced to cows nearby to his grandmother's home. HIs grandmother's sister, who knew the cows the best, reassured him at a young age, that they were friendly, kind and curious.One of the more rare and distinct animals that Plume has encountered is an okapi. An okapi is not a true "mix" of animals but is the only living relative of the giraffe.I thoroughly enjoyed meeting my guest and sharing his story of bountiful love and support from the many important women in his life.
