Continuing our I Love the 90s series, we move on to 1996, the year the Atlanta Olympics captivated the country and Bill Clinton edged out Bob Dole to win a second term in the White House. Don and Dude drop the needle on one studio album from festival rock royalty and one alt hip hop record that became a crossover phenomenon, connecting both records to a world of holiday shoppers fighting over Tickle Me Elmo, scientists cloning a sheep named Dolly, and dance floors everywhere catching the Macarena. The AlbumsPhish – Billy Breathes (1996)Formed in Burlington, Vermont in 1983 around guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman and keyboardist Page McConnell, Phish built a devoted touring and tape trading fan base well before recording its sixth studio album at Bearsville Studios in the Catskills between February and June 1996. Producer Steve Lillywhite, brought in partway through on Dave Matthews' recommendation despite never having heard the band, helped steer Phish toward shorter, more direct and emotionally exposed songwriting, a marked shift from their denser earlier records.Fugees – The Score (1996)Formed by Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel out of New Jersey's hip hop scene in the early 1990s, the Fugees followed their inconsistent 1994 debut Blunted on Reality with a major creative reset, taking greater control of their sound and recording much of the follow up in Wyclef's cousin's New Jersey basement. Released February 13, 1996, The Score fused hard edged East Coast rap with reggae, soul, R&B and live instrumentation, with Lauryn Hill's ability to move between rapping and singing becoming central to the group's identity. Dailor opens up about grief, the band's changing dynamic, and making the new record during an extraordinarily difficult period. Brann also discusses Mastodon's songwriting process, Nick Johnston and João Nogueira, working with Geezer Butler and Josh Homme, and performing at Black Sabbath's Back to the Beginning. Plus, he looks ahead to bringing Marrow Deep to the stage while keeping Mastodon's history—and Brent's legacy—part of the band's future. Rolling Stone has published an excerpt from Dave Mustaine's memoir In My Darkest Hour in which he writes that David Ellefson's time in Megadeth "was likely near" its end even before the 2021 leaked-video scandal that got him fired — reflecting on their 2004 lawsuit, Ellefson's 2010 return as a salaried player rather than a creative partner, and a friendship he says was built on shared addiction. For the record: the person Ellefson was involved with was nineteen, the grooming allegations made online were false, and Ellefson reported the unauthorised distribution of the footage to police himself. Also on this episode: Suicide Silence announce their new album Graceless for November 20 via Century Media, produced by Austin Coupe and mixed by Hunter Young, arriving mid-way through a twenty-eight-date North American tour with Emmure, AngelMaker and Synestia — with founding guitarist Chris Garza back in the band. And the estate of the late Brent Hinds has filed a lawsuit against Mastodon in Fulton County, alleging his ownership stake in the band was never properly bought out, that an $80,000 cheque came with no accounting behind it, and that his likeness was used on the artwork and promotion for Marrow Deep after his death. The members of Mastodon sit down for an incredibly honest conversation about their new album Marrow Deep. Bill, Troy, and Brann share the painful journey of making this record following the departure and subsequent death of guitarist Brent Hinds, as well as the loss of Brann's mother. They talk candidly about the documentary 'Mastodon in the Room' they created to address Brent's exit from the band, the challenges of maintaining a 25-year brotherhood, and how channeling grief into their music has become therapeutic. Following that, Eddie opens up about spending an afternoon with the country icon, Dolly Parton, when she made her rock covers album. He recounts how she declined her Rock Hall induction to make room for deserving rock artists, then created 'Rockstar' with 39 tracks featuring everyone from Steven Tyler to Sting. Eddie shares behind-the-scenes stories from their interview session in Nashville, including Slash's frantic texts and her genuine knowledge of every rock artist on the record. Kevin Cronin also chimes in to discuss duetting with Dolly on 'Keep On Loving You.' Closing the podcast, blues rock guitarist Jared James Nichols discusses his latest album Louder Than Fate. The conversation covers everything from workout routines on tour and advice from George Lynch about getting too bulked up, to collaborating with Keith Nelson, Tyler Bryant, and Tuk Smith on new material. Jared also opens up about his relationship with Gibson Guitars, including his signature Les Paul models and brand ambassador role. Words and interview by Kyra JadeI don't know many people who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to interview Mastodon's drummer Brann Dailor. We all have our bucket list interviews and this had Simon, AKA HEAVY MAG'S 'Professor of Mastodon', written all over it. The universe had other plans this time and Si' was living it up in Bali. This meant it was my turn to jump in and make the most of this chance to ask all the quirky questions that have been burning a hole in my brain. Oh, and hopefully make our Professor proud…This year hasn't been without intense heartache and loss for Mastodon with the passing of Brent Hinds. I couldn't publish this interview without firstly expressing my deepest condolences to all band members and commend the way they've held themselves whilst navigating such a hard time. As adoring fans we may feel we are so connected to our favourite bands through their music that we lose sight of reality sometimes. I think it's important to remember that to the members of Mastodon Brent wasn't only a fellow band member, he was family. Their bond built through years of experiencing massive highs and crushing lows together; ultimately building a brotherhood only they understand. For this reason I made a decision to respect Brann's space by keeping my questions light-hearted in hopes this might give him somewhat of a breather. There's no shortage of things I wanted to talk about. Sometimes it takes me forever to write merely four questions to ask in an interview, for this one I was wondering how I would cram two pages of questions into 20 minutes? Things like… What was the scoop on their gig at Georgia's Aquarium, are fish a tough crowd to play for? Why would someone who doesn't know how to draw decide to illustrate a different clown each day of COVID totalling a whopping 101? Why?! What's it like having your song picked on Drumeo? The list goes on…Brann is not only a huge fan of Ozzy Osbourne, he's blessed with a treasure trove of memories I can only dream of; including being invited to play at the Back to The Beginning, Black Sabbath's farewell concert! Who better to watch gush over the Godfather of Metal and geek out with than this guy, right?! I'll shamelessly take any and every opportunity to talk about Ozzy. Having conversations with people who were in his orbit somehow makes me feel like I'm a part of their world, if only for a second.Mastodon's new album Marrow Deep is very close to its release date of August 28. Though it may technically be my job to share my thoughts on new music, I don't think it's necessary to try to sell this one. I'll simply be stating what you already know deep down inside. It's a masterpiece. It may be fiercely complex and deeply thought provoking, although it still manages to give you that sprinkle of crazy we crave - all while being generous in sharing their raw emotion and feelings.Hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.Until next time, legends!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

On today's episode of The Metal Breakdown Daily, host Scott Penfold breaks down a massive day of rock history, last-minute festival chaos, and a poignant heavy metal tribute. We start with the highly anticipated announcement of 'The Masters Of Reality', a massive 500-page officially backed Black Sabbath book arriving this October through Rufus Publishing. Overseen by legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin, the project chronicles the band's iconic Ozzy Osbourne-fronted eras up to their historic 'Back To The Beginning' farewell concert. Halfin reveals that production began two years ago with the full blessing and signed participation of the late heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne before his sudden passing in 2025. Plus, absolute chaos erupted in Lisbon, Portugal, over the weekend after Megadeth was forced to pull the plug on their headlining appearance at the EvilLive festival due to catastrophic "technical issues." We look at eyewitness accounts of frantic road crews running through the crowd with flashlights, leading to a near-riot as furious fans chanted for refunds and pelted the stage with projectiles. Finally, we head to Atlanta, Georgia, where a brand-new street memorial has been officially unveiled at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard SE. Erected at the site of late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds' tragic 2025 motorcycle crash, the moving tribute serves a dual purpose as a critical road safety warning urging drivers to look twice for motorcyclists. Steve Reis from Does It Doom returns after four years and it's one of those “wait… you did what?!” catch-up episodes. In the time since his last visit, Steve didn't just add a couple new pedals to the shelf. He helped turn Woodwright Guitars into a full-on operation with a growing lineup, more dealers, and signature models tied to the heavy universe with names like Matt Pike, Brent Hinds, and Jimmy Bower. We get into the real stuff behind the curtain: how a doom-obsessed niche turns into a career, what it takes to go from “I make content” to “we make instruments,” and how Steve thinks about building a brand without sanding off the personality that made people care in the first place. Then we hit the creator brain spiral: why long-form YouTube can feel like building a ship in a bottle every week, how short-form became the steady river, and what happens when you finally admit you'd rather make the thing than perform the thing. And yes, there's plenty of gear goblin behavior: stage-played guitars with battle scars, modded vintage vs. museum pieces, and the kind of tone chasing that makes perfect sense if you've ever stared at a melted pickguard like it's a clue. This week on Toilet Radio we're talking with Jonas Renkse of sad boi legends Katatonia! We were just talking about these guys! Jordan and Jonas talk about only wanting to listen to sad music, concerns for visa troubles when attempting to tour the United States, making the transition from death metal vocals to actual singing, taking on newer, younger band members, and warming up with Ratt and Quiet Riot. It's a great interview, skip to 24 minutes in to hear it. ALSO on the show: Brent Hinds left Mastodon after 25 years and now doesn't have anything kind to say about his old crew. Sharon is beefing with bands again as her opportunity to do so rapidly closes forever. Ronnie Radke is cancelling-cancelling WHO? It's Predator vs. Predator as his new schtick is dropping dimes on smaller musicians that are just as gross and predatory as he is. Whoever wins, we lose. Folks, it's a good one.
