HEAVY Music Interviews
Calculating The Past, Present & Future With BEN WEINMAN From THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersWhen The Dillinger Escape Plan bid their fans farewell at the end of 2017 the resulting ripples in the live community could be felt around the world. Despite leaving at the top of their game, DEP still left more than a few fans with an overwhelming sense of loss, especially those who had heard about the band's legendary, aggressive and all encapsulating live performances, but never got to witness it first hand.Formed in 1997 by guitarist Ben Weinman and vocalist Dimitri Minakakis, DEP soon forged a name for themselves on the back of their high intensity, often violent live, reckless shows, the band had an immediate impact with their 1999 debut full-length Calculating Infinity. Among the first people to jump on board was Mike Patton, who invited DEP out on the road for two months with Mr. Bungle, further strengthening their claims as eclectic and tumultuous trailblazers on the metal scene.Minakakis left the group after that album, with Patton providing vocals on an EP before Greg Puciato submitted a recording which led to him being asked to audition, and the rest is metal history. After five more albums, DEP officially disbanded in 2017, with Minakakis joining the line-up on stage over the last two performances on December 27 and 28. It seemed a fitting finale for the band who had turned heavy metal on its head over the course of their career, and despite everyone's obvious disappointment, the legacy of DEP would live on forever. Now, following an 8-year hiatus, The Dillinger Escape Plan return for a very limited number of live shows to commemorate their groundbreaking album Calculating Infinity and so much more, hitting Australia this August for a run of shows. HEAVY caught up with Ben Weinman to find out more."We never, ever think about performance, or things like that," he mentioned during the interview. "We always try and be completely uninhibited expression, and that's very important to us. Sometimes I don't even really wanna look out at the crowd, even at soundcheck or anything. I don't wanna have any indication of what to expect, and it's continued to be that way. Although, I think back in the day when we were first writing these songs we had a lot more people looking at us with disgust (laughs), than with enjoyment."We ask if he has to put himself in a mindset before getting on stage."For me, I can say one of the main aspects of turning on the Dillinger performance is that I'm always nervous," he revealed. "I'm never not nervous. I've never stepped on stage un-nervous. I still feel to this day everyone out there's gonna hate us. We're playing to a pack of wild wolves, and it's just stayed with us. Maybe it's just trauma from when we were younger, but I feel like we wrote music that wasn't supposed to be enjoyed (laughs). And we really wrote an album that was just for us, and it ended up working. I really feel that the fact that we're going out there still not even knowing what the reception will be to some degree - at least mentally - and the nerves is what turns it on. Because you either get up on stage and unleash the beast or you turn around and huddle into a ball and play facing the drums."In the full interview, Ben talks more about what we can expect from the run of shows, revisiting Calculating Infinity, what the album means to him 25 years on, their live intensity and how they sustain it, the early days of The Dillinger Escape Plan, having Mike Patton contribute vocals for an EP after Minakakis left, getting Greg Puciato in the band and what they expected from him, their final 1997 shows with both singers, how that planted the seeds for these reunion shows, the possibility of making the comeback permanent and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

'68 frontman Josh Scogin is our guest this week on The MetalSucks Podcast! We discuss the new album Yes And… that is out right now, including how its title is based on the improv technique and how improv plays a part in the band's music and live performance. Apart from the new music, we also discuss his preferred method to address confrontation in modern times, how to adapt to conversations where people that you disagree with see you as an enemy, and the problem with presenting facts from unreliable sources to win arguments. There's also some chat about frustrating moments during the pandemic and touring with Thrice as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Artist and The Ambulance. Petar and Sylvia discuss the “On The Road Again” program by Live Nation, the response by NIVA on what this will do to independent music venues, Greg Puciato's claims on the money on the table for a Dillinger Escape Plan reunion, Ben Weinman shooting this claims down as false and hinting at some possible tension between its ex-members. During our chat, we discuss his new course on SoundFly called “The Business of Uncompromising Art.” In that discussion, we learn about how The Dillinger Escape Plan took unconventional avenues towards success.  The rest of our conversation also focused on finding the point that one's art is genuine, how happy accidents can help an artist find their identity, the ever-present debate of artist versus craftsmanship, if there is an actual blueprint for success as a musician, how having the desire to be polarizing is motivation enough, and why some of the most technically proficient musicians sometimes don't reach success. Petar and Sylvia discuss Ronnie Radke's response after Spiritbox decided to not to tour with Falling In Reverse, Carmine Appice silencing Nikki Sixx's “washed up” comments, and Russian Circles' decision not to sell merch in Paris due to venue merch cuts. As anyone familiar with the band knows by now, there is a lot to be said about Dillinger Escape Plan not just musically, but also in their ethos and approach to being a band. Torrents of column inches have been dedicated to their impending demise and the deluge will no doubt continue long after, but if you've heard their latest record or seen them live, it's altogether unsurprising that they have chosen to end things on their own terms. Not because they've ran out of ideas - they're just as incendiary, captivating and straight up as mental as ever - but because everything up until this point has been thoroughly thought through. In my research prior to this conversation, Ben said in another interview that Dillinger put more thought into ten seconds worth of music than most bands do for whole albums (I would link it but when I research using old interviews they all just seem to coagulate into one big heap of words, so I've forgotten the source. Sorry). It is this calculated approach, compositionally and artistically, which has defined DEP's music since the beginning. So with this knowledge in mind, it's perhaps much easier to understand why the band decided to come to a controlled stop – if everything is laboured over for maximum effect, then it's fitting that should the book be closed with just as much precision. This is the second time I've spoken to Ben. The first, as regular listeners may recall, was back in 2015 at Hevy fest. It was the briefest of brief conversations. This is twice as long (and then some), but it's still quite short. Being in the thick of it, doing an interview back stage, is one of the coolest things, but it does mean you're often pushed for time. Which is a shame, particularly in this case cause I didn't even get around to asking Ben any of the questions I had written down. We could've sat for another 20 minute, that's how easy the conversation flowed. It was also cool that he recognised me. I never expected that to happen. I never expect anyone to recognise me after an interview – why should you? You see so many faces on tour; cities and venues start to blend into one. I think it's silly to expect someone to remember you after such a short interaction. What I can say about this interview though is that Ben does seem quite settled with the fact that this part of his life will soon be over. We're all excited to see what the band goes on to do next, and I'm sure they are too. When they figure it out.I hope you enjoy this interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman guests this week on your favorite metal podcast, and we decided to make this the definitive interview about the impending split of the band. He and drummer Billy Rymer were willing to discuss the decision in depth with us, what it means to them to make a choice to quit at the top of their game, who ultimately raised the idea of breaking up, whether there's a chance it might be a fluke or snap decision, where they plan to go from here, ... we asked every question about the breakup of the band from every angle we could think of. We also dive a little deeper into Ben's personal life, and ruin him for any other podcasters out there. Sorry, guys. We also play the new song from In Flames figure out where we've heard the chorus before (hint: it was a big hit in 2001). Once you hear it, you won't be able to un-hear it! The "original" is not just an obscure track, it comes from an album that is listed as one of the top Nu-Metal albums you must own. Coincidence? Are In Flames surrounded by sycophants? Or has the overprotection of new material by an artist fearing the leaking of a new track... backfired?

WILDCARD, BITCHES!So, I went to Hevy festival 2015 and recorded a few interviews. Some were long, and some were short. This is one of the short ones. I was accompanied by my handsomely bearded friend Craig who did sound for me. We briefly talk about his beard. Some quick insight into "press" life - at festivals you are not allocated very long with the artists you want to interview. I originally only had ten minutes with Ben. This then changed to one question. Which is fine, because if you're an artist and you're talking to press all day I can see why it would get tiring. We talk a little about how their music has evolved out of writing a record they hadn't heard to now doing things that people don't expect them to do.After the interview he said he hoped he could do this again the next time they play Glasgow. I hope so too. He was also happy I didn't ask random stock questions like "what animal would you be?" etc. I guess people are as tired of being asked them as I am hearing them/reading them.I hope you like it.Thoughts? If you guys like the idea of super short interviews that exist alongside the podcast then I can definitely do more of them.   Since I discovered "Heavy Metal" in my early teen I have always been drawn to it's extremes. Whether it was the extreme speed of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" album, or the even more extreme speed and unintelligible vocals of Indestroy (early Death Metal), I have always been on the look out for what was next. I wanted heavier, faster, louder, crazier concepts. For me that is what Metal has always been about. Look at where we started with Black Sabbath. At that time no one sounded like that. Look at what Anthrax did with "I'm The Man". In 1987 very few metals would listen to any rap, let alone think of mixing it with metal. But Metal progresses, whether Metalheads like it or not. In the last few years I discovered a band called "The Dillinger Escape Plan" and they are classified by some as "Math Metal" or "Mathcore". When I first heard that term, I had no idea what that term meant. All I knew was, that Dillinger had something new, something extreme. When I listen to them I hear elements of Jazz. This is especially evident on the new record, "One Of Us Is The Killer". There are moments on the record where I hear what sounds like a mash up of the Miles Davis classic "kind of blue" with Black Flag's "Damaged".  Listening to this record is a sonic and emotional journey. In episode 20 we caught up with Ben Weinman, guitarist of Dillinger, and talked with him about his new signature guitar and what it has been like driving Dillinger all these years. We also discuss, pedals, The Mayhem Festival, and new music.

Did the three Japanese teenage girls in Babymetal just one-up every current metalcore and deathcore band with their infectious blend of J-pop and metal?
