Send us a textAlongside Boone, John Seeley (bass), Alex Wells (guitar), and Dale Myers (drums), these tight-knit guys stay connected to their homegrown roots having been around traditional instruments from a young age in piano, fiddle, and guitar instilling in them an appreciation of country-rock, bluegrass, blues, soul, and folk music. The band blends roots, blues, classic rock, soul, and, of course, Southern rock and has created an original sound reminiscent of some of the great blues-rock/Southern rock bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Wet Willie. They also draw inspiration from some of the all-time blues/soul greats like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and various artists from back in the classic heyday of Motown Records.OTIS is new musical blood for a new day with heavy, melodic blues-rock riffs, soaring guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, and raw, soulful vocals from Mr. Froggett. The band embraces Southern rock's hallowed past while charting their own future.  With some of the legendary Southern rock bands winding it down or no longer in existence, OTIS is a proud, new torchbearer of the Southern rock/blues-rock heritage. The band's debut album, 2014's Tough Times:  A Tribute to John Brim, is a raw, groove-oriented, blues drenched masterpiece that got rave reviews and was a blueprint for things to come for the band. The blistering Eyes of the Sun was released in 2018 on Cleopatra Records and more than lived up to the promise of the band's debut album.  Executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Paul Nelson, who earned his stripes by playing and performing with Johnny Winter and helping Johnny win a Grammy for his highly acclaimed album, Step Back, the album solidified the band's influences into a boiling stew of rootsy, kickass, take-no-prisoners, blues-rock goodness kicked up with a bit of soul and funk spiciness.  Good musical eats to say the least. And now comes Last Fool in the Line, which is a precursor to a full album that will be released sometime hopefully sooner than later (good things take time!)  To learn more about the band, connect at https://theotisband.com/ Visit the Self-Care Institute at https://www.selfcareinstitute.com/ Support the showVisit www.creativepeacemeal.com to leave a review, fan voicemail, and more!Insta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! Thirsty Forest Animals [00:25] "Nape" Southeast of Saturn: Michigan Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-629 2020 All of this, yes. When I lived in NYC in the 90s, so many of my friends were from Michigan that it's amazing some stayed around to develop these sounds. Fauna [05:26] "To Ecstasy" Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2: Midwest Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-750 2022 I also knew a lot of folks from Minneapolis, where Fauna hail from. This track is from their 1992 release Everafter. Glen Campbell [09:23] "Southern Nights" Southern Nights Capitol SO-11601 1977 Glen takes an excellent turn with Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" (https://youtu.be/mCscZ2tPFmI?si=0lfs02BFzVpS3aIf) originally recorded in 1975. Glen heard that version and was reminded of his childhood in Arkansas. This single made it to number 1 on the charts, and the album made it as high as 22 on the Billboard 200. You can see Glen playing one of his weirdo Ovation electric 12-strings here on The Midnight Special (https://youtu.be/A8VgyiMAJ9k?si=qdJzW9C6zMMHfQ70). Hawkwind [12:24] "Sonic Attack" Space Ritual United Artists Records UA-LA120-H2 1973 Epically epic space jams with interspersed spoken words as exampled here with "Sonic Attack" written by Michael Moorcock and recited by James Calvert. The sleeve art by Barney Bubbles is a thing of majesty. If space jams are your thing and you've never heard this album, seek it out. Amazingly, this album briefly dented the Billboard 200, making it to number 179. The album jacket is quite a work of art. If you'd like to see the full artwork, join me over on Patreon for video liner notes (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill). Depeche Mode [17:24] "Dreaming of Me" Speak & Spell Sire SRK 3642 1981 What a difference a decade makes (as compared to Hawkwind)? The debut album by the boys from Basildon, and the only one recorded with Vince Clark (before he moved on to Yaz and subsequently Erasure). This album also just cracked the Billboard 200 here in the US, making it to number 192. This single did actually make it into the US Billboard dance charts, going as high as 47. The English Beat [21:01] "Sooner or Later" Special Beat Service I.R.S. Records SP 75069 1982 (1987 reissue) Everyday someone is born who has never heard "Sooner or Later". Perhaps you are one of those people who has never heard "Sooner or Later". If so, enjoy! This guitar sounds (and this video (https://youtu.be/c-7lBq0zuSM?si=18igG60AbOt239Kf)) have been permentantly etched into my musical brain thanks to the early days of MTV. John Zorn [24:36] "Hico Killer - Long Mile to Houston" Spillane Elektra Nonesuch 9-79172-1 1987 Gritty road story from master blues musician Albert Collins, tinged with Zorn & Co's trademark oddballness. Con Funk Shun [29:19] "Juicy" Spirit of Love Mercury SRM-13806 1980 The Bay Area's very own Con Funk Shun. If you've got a funk/soul album with a track called "Juicy" you know you've got to listen to it. Or at least, I do. Written by the band's guitarist and vocalist Michael Vernon Cooper. The Wonderland Singers [34:07] "Bats in the Belfry" Spooky Halloween Wonderland Records LP-293 1974 They just don't make organ music like they used to, and probably for good reason. At least the cover art is cool. Ustalost [35:20] "III" The Spoor of Vipers Gilead Media RELIC82 2017 Some blackened heaviness from this solo project by Will Skarstad of Yellow Eyes. For those of you who appreciate this style of music, seek out A Wandering Path: The Story of Gilead Media (https://youtu.be/gTZ1HcDtW-U?si=_ann3_mOUWXm2pCq) on a streaming service near you. Missing Persons [40:49] "Bad Streets" Spring Session M Capitol Records ST-12228 1982 This album made a strong impression on my when it came out and I still find myself thinking about it. For this episode's selection, I took a look at the track listings and immediately heard this song in my head. The album made it to number 42 on the Hot 100 and generated 4 singles: "Words (https://youtu.be/IasCZL072fQ?si=VO4X1DpThnxhHYup)", "Desitnation Unknown (https://youtu.be/1WDly1Oc_P4?si=5j2wgoC34DdwEtoU)", "Windows (https://youtu.be/v0vdk3YOvMM?si=31AgmgVzkx6cUeou)", and "Walking in L.A. (https://youtu.be/80WyBxo0Hto?si=DjM4k640jKUOTkhV)". Graham Parker and the Rumour [44:30] "Local Girls" Squeezing Out the Sparks Arista AB 4223 1979 Another heavy rotation video (https://youtu.be/taXvBivGcMo?si=wUPJk-7GLYH8XtUu) from the early days of MTV, despite being made in 1979. The album attempts to explore English suburbia. The album cover features some great typography by Gerard Huerta. Amazing Rhythm Aces [49:48] "Third Rate Romance" Stacked Deck ABC Records ABCD-913 1975 Some fun country-inflected rock from these Memphis gents, sounding almost perfectly mid-70s in a good way. The album reached 11 on the country charts and 120 on the Billboard 200. This single also hit 11 on the country charts and 14 on the pop chart. The band even made an appearance on the second season of Austic City Limits (https://youtu.be/pLz6nIvqB2c?si=nFcMK2tAEEfFjI8n). Love Barry "Byrd" Burton's finger pickin on this. Sly and the Family Stone [53:11] "You Can Make It if You Try" Stand! Epic BN 26456 1969 The mighty Sly Stone and family take a funky turn at this song originally recorded by Gene Allison (https://youtu.be/xiPI7d1y2Co?si=bo1XG2515eGJoYnn) and also covered by the Rolling Stones (https://youtu.be/jz4VO_NiY24?si=1OhUnqa0lAa5JEwM). Fans of Primal Scream will also recognize the tail end of the track that precedes this album closer. Jacksons [56:49] "Blame It on the Boogie" Star Fire Ronco R 3200 1980 As seen on TV! 18 original hits by 18 original artists! A compilation of hits, mostly from 1979. In honor of the late Tito Jackson, I had to go with this uptempo Jacksons single from 1978. Wet Willie [01:00:00] "Keep on Smilin'" Star Trackin' '76 Ronco R 1976-2 1976 As seen on TV! 20 original hits by 20 original artists! While 8 year old me would have been extremely excited about the "Theme from S.W.A.T.", I decided to go with Mobile AL's own Wet Willie. I could have also gone with Abba's "Waterloo" but loyal listeners already know how much I love Abba. Music behind the DJ: "Charade" by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra

What the Riff?!?
1974 - August: Little Feat “Feats Don't Fail Me Now”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2024 37:13

This week we are delving into one of the greats of Southern Rock.  Well, they are southern rock if you count southern California.  Little Feat took its name from a comment Frank Zappa made to his band member Lowell George regarding his having little feet. George would become a founder and driving force behind Little Feat, providing guitar and vocals.  Other members were Paul Barrere on guitar and vocals, Sam Clayton on percussion and vocals, Kenny Gradney on bass, Richie Hayward on drums and vocals, and Bill Payne on keyboards and vocals.Feats Don't Fail Me Now is the band's fourth studio album, and it went to number 36 on the US Top LP's chart.  It is hard to go wrong when, in addition to the regular band members you have the Tower of Power on horns, and backing vocals from Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt.  The album was recorded at Blue Seas Recording Studio in Maryland, and it provided two advantages.  First, it had just opened and needed a band for their "shakedown cruise," letting Little Feat record on the cheap.  Second, it was far away from their home base in Los Angeles, which kept Lowell George away from many familiar temptions of drugs and women. While Lowell George would soon begin to deteriorate in health (he died of a heart attack in 1979), this album shows him and his band at the height of their artistic prowess.  The surviving members of Little Feat would regroup in 1987, and the band continues to perform today.Wayne takes us through this little feat of southen rock for this week's podcast. Feats Don't Fail Me NowThe title track received significant airplay on FM radio and it leads off side two of the album.  That driving bass line and funky drumbeat is sometimes called Country Funk Boogie.  The message of the song is one of perseverance and determination to get back the girl the singer loves.Oh AtlantaIf you were living in the metro-Atlanta area in the 70's or 80's, you definitely are familiar with this song.  Billy Payne takes lead vocal duties on this track, and it features Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris on backing vocals.  "Well, you can drop me off on Peachtree, I got to feel that Georgia sun.  And the women there in Atlanta, they make you awfully glad you come."Spanish MoonThis track was written by Lowell George and features the Tower of Power horn section.  This is a deeper cut, but it has a latin groove while maintaining both a bluesy and funky sound.  The origin of the song is a dream George had of a dangerous nightclub in New Orleans called the Spanish Moon.Rock and Roll DoctorThe song considered the hit off the album is an anthem to the healing power of music.  "Two degress in bebop, a PhD in swing, he's a master of rhythm, he's a rock and roll king."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Together Brothers”The Love Unlimited Orchestra provided this title track to STAFF PICKS:Radar Love by Golden EarringLynch's starts our staff picks this week with a Dutch rock band originally formed in 1961.  Lead vocalist Barry Hay and guitarist George Kooymans wrote this single that reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.  The lyrics describe a man driving a long way to be with his love, and communicating with her through a mystical bond he calls "radar love."Keep on Smilin' by Wet WillieBruce features the title track from Wet Willie's third studio album.  It is their biggest hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song itself is rather stoic, encouraging the listener to keep smiling through the difficulties and pain of life. The Night Chicago Died by Paper LaceRob's staff pick is a story telling song that topped the US chart for one week in 1974.  The lyrics describe a shoot-out between the Chicago Police and Al Capone's gangsters, and worries from the wife of a police officer that her husband wouldn't make it home.  The song ends on a positive note when her husband walks through the door.Beach Baby by The First ClassWayne brings us a British band made up of all session players.  They call themselves "the first class" because they considered themselves to be a kind of supergroup of the UK music session set.  This song would be a one-hit wonder, reaching number 4 in the US, but other singles would not see the same level of success. NOVELTY TRACK:Rub It In by Billy "Crash" CraddockThis novelty song hit the top of the country charts.  It may be more familiar as the jingle from Glade air fresheners, where they sing, "plug it in." Preston, the bass player in my garage band THE NERVE recently suggested that this song would be a good one for the band to try. I remembered it fondly and I felt good singing it, and we started to work it into our repertoire. Jimmy Hall, the original lead singer on the track said that the first time Ricky Hirsch, the guitarist for Wet Willie, played him the signature riff, “it felt like a sunny breeze on a beach.” I agree, and apparently a lot of other people thought so, too, because it made a comeback during the pandemic: “keep on smiling through the rain, laughing at the pain, rollin' with the changes, 'til the sun comes out again.” Right? We all needed to remind ourselves that there would be a light at the end of that dark tunnel. There is a great YouTube clip from three years ago with Jimmy singing it with the band Blackberry Smoke, on the 50th anniversary of Capricorn Studios, and the man sounds better than ever. In 1974, when it debuted, it was produced for Macon, GA's Capricorn Records (the same folks that brought us The Allman Brothers), by the legendary Tom Dowd, who came up with the “stop time” bridge - that lifts the song into the final heavenly chorus. It made it to #10 on the national charts, and earned its wings as a perfect feel good Sunny Song.

Joey Stuckey is an award-winning blind guitarist, songwriter, singer, composer, producer, radio and television personality, music columnist, educator and sound engineer. He is also the official music ambassador for his home town of Macon Georgia. Joey's guitar style is reminiscent of rocker Jeff Beck and jazzer Wes Montgomery, while his vocal influences range from Mel Torme to Gregg Allman. As an infant, Joey lost his sight and sense of smell as the result of a brain tumor and was introduced to music from an early age. His mother enjoyed opera, while his dad enjoyed country music. When he was 13, Stuckey developed pneumonia and eventually had to be home schooled for an entire year. "I lived for my shows on Saturdays," says Joey. "I was a huge fan of public radio and on Saturdays, I listened to a show called, 'After Space.' It was DJ'd and produced by a guy called Rob Thomas (who eventually became a good friend and is still a great friend today). He would play radio shows like, 'The Lone Ranger,' 'The Shadow,' and other classic shows. I was so enamored with these stories - the sound effects and narration broadcast in a format accessible for the blind were just amazing." The show was produced so eloquently, Joey decided that sound production was what he wanted to do with his life. What began as a simple statement turned into a life-long passion. After that evolutionary period in his life, Joey bought all kinds of sound equipment and was soon recording sessions in his house with various garage bands. He was amazed at the writing ability from the many musicians he came across. "I realized, at that point, that there were things I wanted to share with the world," says Stuckey. "And I knew that the medium for that was music." Without missing a beat, Joey graduated from high school at the age of 14 and at 17, began his musical career by taking classical guitar lessons from noted music professor Terry Cantwell. Joey went on to attend Mercer University. He furthered his musical education by studying with renowned jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan and later, with Professor Steven Crowell. Despite his physical limitations, Joey has flourished in every aspect of his life. He released several albums, including 'Take A Walk In The Shadows' (1995), 'Ironies, Pain And The Light That Guides' (1999), 'Live And Stuff,' (2000), 'Live And More Stuff,' (2001), 'So Far,' (2003), 'Oceanside,' (2009), 'The Shadow Sound,' (2011), 'Mixture' (2012) and 'The Acoustic Sessions, Volume I' (2014). Joey experienced national success with the launch of 'Mixture,' which reached #9 on the CMJ Top 40 Jazz Charts for North America. In 2002, Joey met his wife, Jennifer, who works as a certified nurse midwife in Macon. He is also the owner and sound engineer of a recording facility, Shadow Sound Studio in Macon, which boasts vintage analog gear and state-of-the-art digital technology. Joey enjoys promoting music in various ways. He is a featured music columnist for the webzine 'Portal Magazine' and contributes regularly to a music blog on 'Gateway Macon,' where he writes about the history of music in Macon and other music-related topics. Joey is currently involved with students, instructing them on guitar, voice, music theory, and sound engineering. He is the professor of Music Technology at Mercer University and an official mentor for the Recording Connections School in Los Angeles. No stranger to musical theater, he was the music director for Macon State College's production of 'The Rocky Horror Show' in the fall of 2002. Recently, Joey has taken on the role of music publisher and has a growing catalog of great songs in multiple genres. His publishing companies include Sociology Publishing (BMI) and Sign Wave Publishing (ASCAP). Joey and his band, The Joey Stuckey Band, perform nationally. They have opened for legendary artists such as TED NUGENT, BAD COMPANY, TRISHA YEARWOOD, JAMES BROWN, CLARENCE CARTER, WET WILLIE, THE B-52'S, KEVIN KINNEY FROM DRIVIN' N CRYIN, and SMASHMOUTH. In his other roles as either producer, composer, music columnist, and sound engineer or hired musician, Joey has worked with musical greats including GEORGE THOROGOOD, ALAN PARSONS (PINK FLOYD, THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT), ROSS HOGARTH (PRODUCER FOR VAN HALEN, JOHN MELLENCAMP, BONNIE RAITT), BILLY DUFF (THE CULT), JOE SOLO (PRODUCER FOR MACY GRAY), DANNY SERAPHINE (CHICAGO), BEN TUCKER (HERBIE MANN), DAVID RAGSDALE (KANSAS, SMASHING PUMPKINS), ALLEN VIZZUTTI (CHICK COREA BAND), SAMMY NESTICO (COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA), DAVID BERGER (ARRANGER AND CONDUCTOR FOR JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER, ARRANGER FOR NATALIE COLE, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, MADELEINE PEYROUX AND CECILE MCLORIN SALEANT), SHANNON FOREST (TOTO, TAYLOR SWIFT, RASCAL FLATTS), CHARLIE HOSKYNS (THE POPES), PAUL MCGUINNESS (THE POGUES), WILL MORRISON (MODERN ENGLISH), CHUCK LEAVELL, RANDALL BRAMBLETT (TRAFFIC, GREG ALLMAN), HUGHIE THOMASSON (FROM LYNYRD SKYNARD AND THE OUTLAWS), JIMMY HERRING (FROM THE AQUARIUM RESCUE UNIT, FROG WING, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, AND THE OTHERS/GRATEFUL DEAD), MIKE MILLS from R.E.M and many, many others. In short, Joey is a young man with an enormous talent, clear vision, and a tireless work ethic, who is well respected by his peers, fans, and more than a few legends. Joey released his new single, 'Blind Man Drivin' in London, England on March 12, 2015 during his Spring tour. Founded in 1974 by Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and erstwhile drummer Bun E. Carlos, the Rockford, IL-born band is back with IN ANOTHER WORLD – their 20th studio collection and first since 2017’s double header of WE’RE ALL ALRIGHT! and CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS. Produced by longtime associate Julian Raymond, the new LP sees the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees doing what they do better than anyone, crafting indelible rock ‘n’ roll with oversized hooks, mischievous lyrics, and seemingly inexorable energy. Trademark anthems like “Light Up The Fire” and “Boys & Girls & Rock N Roll” are countered by more introspective – but no less exuberant – considerations of times past, present, and unknowable future on such strikingly potent new tracks as “Another World” and “I’ll See You Again.” As irresistible and immediate as anything in their already awesome catalog, IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their irrepressible best, infinitely entertaining and utterly unstoppable.“We’re too dumb to quit,” Nielsen says. “We just love to play.”Cheap Trick remain among the most influential and popular bands of any era, armed with an untouchable canon of certifiable classics like “He’s A Whore,” “California Man,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender,”  “I Want You To Want Me,” and the worldwide #1 hit single, “The Flame.” 2016 saw the band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a long overdue acknowledgement of a nearly five decade career that has earned Cheap Trick more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications, myriad awards and industry honors, featured appearances on over 20 movie soundtracks, and total record sales well in excess of 20 million.Thing is, where other artists of their vintage might be content to rest on their hard-earned laurels, Cheap Trick remain indefatigable, touring more than 150 nights each year while also continuing to expand their recorded catalog.“We’ve put out four albums in the last three years,” Zander says. “It’s a work ethic that I think comes from maybe growing up in the Midwest. It’s a different world now though. We made two records a year with our first four albums.”“We try to just knock it out,” Nielsen says. “We never were one of those bands that spent months and months and months and months sitting in a studio, trying to make it better and better and better.”Cheap Trick attributes much of their recent creative boom to both Daxx Nielsen – the band’s touring drummer since 2010 – and Academy Award-nominated producer/songwriter Julian Raymond, the de-facto “fifth member” of Cheap Trick and friend for more than three decades.“Julian’s a godsend,” Nielsen says. “Working with us is like herding cats, but he does it. He listens to everybody. Bad ideas, good ideas, he listens to them all. It’s what a real producer does.”“We consider him part of the band,” Zander says. “He’s a songwriter, a singer, a musician, a producer. He’s the whole package of somebody that you want to work with.”Sessions for IN ANOTHER WORLD got underway with Raymond in Nashville, during a free week amidst the band’s endless touring. The band’s approach to songwriting remains the same as ever, with each member contributing ideas and musical elements that are then made whole through collective creativity.“We all have home studios,” Zander says. “So the basic stuff – demos and pre-production – comes from our homes individually and then we bring that into the band. If it’s half-baked, we throw it back in the oven and fix it up. Then we set aside a week and go in and record the record.”“We’ve built up all these different ideas over all the years,” Petersson says. “There will be certain things that maybe didn’t strike people at the time but now it’s like, what’s that? Wow, that’s great.”Kicking off with “Here Comes The Summer” – which first appeared in 2018 as a standalone single titled “The Summer Looks Good on You” – IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their most eclectic, touching on a myriad of distinct sounds and song approaches, from the breakneck “Another World (Reprise)” to the swampy Chicago blues number, “Final Days” (the latter boasting fiery harmonica from GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer and Wet Willie frontman Jimmy Hall).“Cheap Trick has always been diverse,” Nielsen says. “We didn’t just try to write a pop song and then make the rest of the record a bunch of other pop songs, just not as good.”“There’s a lot of nuance in our songs,” Nielsen says. “They sound fairly simple but they’re not.”To be sure, a slightly dark sense of unknowing permeates IN ANOTHER WORLD, imbuing songs like “Another World” and “So It Goes” with a haunting new meaning in these strange times. Though “The Party” might swagger like the Sunset Strip in the 1980s, the song is in fact, says Zander, about living on “the edge of death.”“This record in particular reflects what’s going on in the world around us right now,” Zander says. “We’ve always been a positive band, we’ve always been hopeful, even when we’re being tongue in cheek. But now that we’re getting older there’s not as much nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah going on.”“We don’t go out of our way to bring stuff up,” Petersson says. “Whatever happens, happens. I don’t know how to explain it. Everything seems crazy now but when we were growing up, it was crazy too. Vietnam, Nixon. Kent State. Somebody said to me, was it much better then? It was bad then. Was it polarized? Yes. Was it frightening? Yes. Looking back on it, it was that bad. At least then you could go to a rock ‘n roll show, but there’s nothing we can do about that at the moment.”From their very start, Cheap Trick have proudly asserted themselves as rock ‘n’ roll fans, a passion often manifested through inventive cover versions both on stage and in the studio. IN IN ANOTHER WORLD includes the band’s timely rendition of John Lennon’s still-relevant “Gimme Some Truth,” originally released for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019 and featuring the instantly recognizable guitar sound of erstwhile Sex Pistol Steve Jones.“That came from watching TV and listening to these politicians,” Zander says. “They’re just constantly shoved down your throat. That song just popped into my head and I thought, oh my god, it means more nowadays than it did back when John wrote it. So I went into my own studio and did a version of it. The single came out before the album but then later on, we decided, why not put it on the record?”“It’s so cool to have Jones on there,” Petersson says. “He’s a funny guy. He’s got a style that’s unmistakable; he’s got a great feel and a great sound. Just perfect for that type of song.”Cheap Trick are of course one of rock’s hardest working live acts, lighting it up at arenas, concert halls, and amphitheatres worldwide more than 150 nights each year. Alas, recent events have forced the band off the road for perhaps the longest hiatus of their storied history. Cheap Trick hope to return to the endless highway, with plans to support their good friends in ZZ Top’s 50th Anniversary tour now postponed until 2021.“We don’t go on tour for 18 months and then go home for 18 months,” Petersson says. “We’re on call, all the time.”“Right now, obviously, it’s out of our hands,” Nielsen says. “If we don’t see each other for a bit, or if we don’t play live for a week or two, we just fall right back into it. We never get rusty – we started out rusty.”IN ANOTHER WORLD makes it abundantly clear that Cheap Trick remain as one of a kind as ever before, indefatigably blasting out perfect pop rock ‘n roll with high craft, cheeky humor, and amp-blasting power. Indeed, IN ANOTHER WORLD stands as triumphant testament to Cheap Trick’s constant creative motion, these venerable veterans as energized and enthused as a young band just out of the garage.“On our first album I wrote, ‘I’m 30 but I feel like 16,’” Nielsen says. “Well, I still feel like I’m 16… at least until reality hits me. But when I get up and play, I still feel like the youngest guy up there.”“We’re always thinking about the next one, whatever it is,” Petersson says. “As soon as we finished the latest one and we’re like, okay, now what’s next? It’s nice, in that we have a creative outlet that we’re always looking forward to. You come home from the road and you’re playing guitar or hearing something on the radio, thinking, oh wow, that gives me a great idea for the next record. We’re always thinking that way. We’re always looking to the next one.”“This band is held together by music,” Zander says. “It’s the super glue that keeps us writing and putting records out. The reason we started the band in the first place was to tour and write songs and put records out. If all that went away, there would be no point then, would there?”

The spot that is now occupied by Earnestine and Hazel’s at 531 South Main St was once the exact opposite of what it was to become in the future. In the late 1800s, it was built as a church, complete with fancy doors and a steeple. The area that the corner building occupies was considered “South Memphis”. It was a residential area that remained so until the early 1900s, when the railroad was built. South Memphis opened two new train stations and 50 passenger cars would come through every day. At that point, the area became able to support businesses. Sadly, the church burned down some time in the early 1900s. I couldn’t find an exact date, but the assessor's office lists the current building’s date as 1918. That year, a new building was erected, the same one you see today, and it was purchased by Abe Plough and turned into one of his Pantaze Drugstores.  Abe Plough is a name synonymous with Memphis. In 1908, he borrowed $125 from his father and started his own business, Plough Chemical Company. He pedaled his “antiseptic healing oil”, that he created in a room above his father’s shop, to the drug stores in and around Memphis. His patent medicine took off and within a couple of years he doubled his profits.  Side note: patent medicines are basically ones that marketed as medicines, but have no proven effectiveness. They are protected by trademarks but their ingredients are generally not completely disclosed. You’ll often hear them referred to as “tonics” or “elixirs”. With his additional money, Plough found his way into the cosmetics and sunscreen business and eventually acquired St. Joseph’s Aspirin brand. Over the next 100 years, Plough Inc became a multi-million dollar company, partnering with Schering Company. Schering Plough and the Plough Foundation became a major philanthropic entity in Memphis.  But let’s rewind. Plough opened Pantaze Drugstores in the 1930s. Apparently Pantaze were the Walgreens of its day. There were 7 Pantaze drug stores on Main St and in the downtown area. It was during his time owning Pantaze that Plough started to expand his brand and continued on to find his fame.  Now in the building on S. Main, Plough only used the bottom floor of the building for his pharmacy/sundry store, so he rented the upstairs to two beauticians, Earnestine Mitchell and Hazel Jones.  Side note: a sundry is basically a general store that sells miscellaneous items One of the products that Plough had made was a hair straightening product and it worked quite well. Not only did the ladies use it in their salon, it was also being used all over the eastern part of the country. With Plough’s success and new found fortune, he gave (or I've also heard sold for a very inexpensive price) the building to Earnestine and Hazel. This transaction occurred some time in the 1950s, from what I can tell.  Having no interest in running a sundry, the ladies decided to turn the downstairs area into a jazz cafe. Earnestine’s husband, Andrew, who went by the name of Sunbeam, opened a venue nearby for musicians, called Club Paradise. This was not the first business venture of Sunbeam Mitchell though. Throughout his years as a promoter, Mitchell had opened several music venues, a restaurant, and even a hotel for African Americans, which were scarce in those times. Earnestine kept the books and ran the hotel.  The Mitchells and Plough were not strangers to each other either. One of Sunbeam’s music venues (Club Handy) and the Mitchell hotel were on the second and third floors of the Pantaze Drugs, which again was owned by Plough, on Beale St. (Wet Willie’s currently occupies this building.)  Club Paradise was the largest and most prestigious nightclub in Memphis. It could hold up to 3200 people. Numerous acts such as locals Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters played there, as well as big named acts Ike & Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, & Sam Cook.

As The World Falls Down”.

No Time for Love Songs. Escuchar audio

Another show signed, sealed and delivered..... Set 1 OPENING SALVO *Starting off with a band from Boulder Colorado The Astronauts- "Tomorrow's gonna be another day" a 45 rpm on RCA 1965. These guys looked more like surfers than some California bands. *Johnny Ace & Willie Mae - "Hey Baby" another 45 rpm, this time on Don Robey's Duke Records dated 1953. It's said that when Johnny A shot himself in the head during a game of Russian Roulette Willie Mae [a spurned lover] loaded up the gun with some real lead. *Neko Case - "Hold on, hold on". A terrific slightly moody song off of her 2006 record FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD. Anti 2006 *Link Wray - "Dick Tracy / Private Eye"...what can you say about the Linkster? He brings it everytime. SET 2: *Shocking Blue - Send me a postcard. 45 rpm on Pink Elephant....I have to admit I had chub for Mariska Veres when she was struttin' it. *Fraternity of Man - "In the morning" [ABC 1968]….future Little Feat members with a wacked out LP *Palmyra Delran & The Dopple Gang - Come Spy w/ Me [Wicked Cool]….New stuff for me on clear 12" 45 rpm vinyl. *Nirvana - Love Buzz [Sub Pop 1989]. Kurt Cobain was soooo good. Covering a Shocking Blue song off their debut BLEACH. SET 3 *The Mothers of Invention - Hungry Freaks Daddy [Verve 1966]. The first double R&R record I'm told. *Joan Jett - Everyday People [MCA / Blackheart 1983]...a 45 rpm *Dave Bartholomew - Who Drank The Beer While I Was In The Rear [Imperial 1952] Dave Bartholomew was the man behind Fats Domino rise to success as well as being the author of Chuck Berry's only #1 - My Ding-A-Ling [but we'll forgive him for that!]. Trumpet player, entepreneur, songwriter, member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...all these titles apply to the great Dave Bartholomew. Elvis Costello thought enough of DB to mention him in "Monkey to Man" on THE DELIVERY MAN which came out in 2004. *Jimmy Hall - Tell the Truth [Capricorn 1996]. Former frontman for Wet Willie with a smokin' version of JB Hutto's classic song. SET 4: *The Ikettes - Camel Walk [Modern 1964] 45 rpm from Ike & Tina's backup group / b-side. *Robyn Hitchcock - It's a Mystic Trip [Armageddon 1981]. A flexi that came with RH's 1st solo single. Found at the Allentown Record Show many years ago. *Alejandro Escovedo - Break this time.....he's great...that's it.

In between, two volcanic vocalists with deep roots in southern music and an impeccable way with a song. Ashley Cleveland conjures a spirit and an atmosphere of grace in her gospel rock.
