This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and it has also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Cicadastone – “Dime A Dozen” from Cold Chamber (2021)A Pale Horse Named Death – “Heroin Train” from And Hell Will Follow Me (2011)Drain STH – “Serve The Shame (acoustic)” from Horror Wrestling (1998)EMBASSYROWE – “Volition” from Dreamliar (2024)Failure – “Let It Drip” from Magnified (1994)Seventh Void – “Shadow On Me” from Heaven Is Gone (2009)My Sister's Machine – “Wasting Time” from Diva (1992)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

“Sure, God's all-powerful, but does he have lips? Whoa…” It was the early 90's, and the landscape of metal was undergoing a transformation. Hair metal was effectively dead and gone, the popularity of thrash was rapidly approaching its zenith, and ALICE IN CHAINS were well on their way to becoming one of the most recognized bands in the world, thanks (in no small part) to their slot supporting The Clash of the Titans Tour, opening for 75% (or ¾ if you prefer fractions) of The Big Four as perhaps the most obscure, unknown, and “out of place” band on a bill packed with the biggest names in thrash.   While ALICE IN CHAINS brought their own unique brand of metal to a brand-new (and oftentimes “highly resistant”) audience as the “odd ducks” relative to their legendary thrash counterparts, AIC's “baptism by fire” granted them the opportunity to prove their mettle while winning over new legions of metal fans and helping pave the way for the next evolutionary wave of metal which would soon be rising to prominence.   Get ready to learn the answer to “Where?” and prepare to get “sucked in” as we unveil the actual reason why glam bands wore make-up and remember why “It's gotta be clean and it's gotta be huge” if you “won't be taking baths this year” whenever you JOIN US for some “third eye gravy” as we go INSIDE THE METAL of a band sharing more in common with Slayer than you'd think and journey to the rainy, perpetually moist, Pacific Northwest (where one might “hunt for some Squatch”) with Seattle's native sons, ALICE IN CHAINS.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. The new Pop Evil album drops on March 17th called Skeletons. Leigh tells me why they named it that, and why there's a + and - on the cover art work. He talks about the writing process and what influenced the music and lyrics.  The band has developed a sizable catalog, as Leigh talks about the history of the band, why they stayed in west Michigan as opposed to coming to Detroit. Speaking of which, he talks about some of the talented artists that have come from the "D", including a few we hung with last weekend.  That's just for starters with Leigh.  Up next, it Willian DuVall from Alice In Chains.  He's on The Hu's latest single "This Is Mongol (Warriors Soul)". He tells me about working with that very unique band on that song. "They're definitely working with instruments and vocal techniques and textures that are largely unfamiliar and exotic to western sensibilities. But, ya know, I take that on as kind of a welcomed challenge." He said they fused what he does, and what they do to make the final product. He also told me that he'd never seen the band live. "I have yet to actually see them live in concert....it also would be cool to join them on stage" He gave me an Alice in Chains update. He said that right now "Not Much" is going on with them. Well, that was anticlimactic. LOL "We're enjoying our downtime." He answers the question of how joining AIC changed his life. He also answers correctly what Jerry Cantrell's best riff. is. We got into some vinyl talk, and then I brought up KISS. That's when William really lit up. "That was concurrent into my wanting to play music." He told me how Ace Frehley influenced the way he plays guitar. He told me about a time he sort of met his guitar hero, and what his best riff was as well....which he also got right! ;) -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

Many of the songs deal with the loss of the bands longtime lead singer, Layne Staley who passed away in 2002. New vocalists and rhythm guitarist William DuVall fills the hole nicely as the band picks up right where they left off.Andy picks out a Tom Waits record from 1978 that signified Waits transition from a lounge singer to the blues and jazz man we know today. Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City', the opening track from Kiss's Destroyer.  That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too.  If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels.  From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album.   Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic.  Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984.  Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin' Woman' off the Unblackened album.    We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance.  We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze' and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company.  Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises.  We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day.  It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned's ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'.  If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture.  From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music'.  We will get through this and the music helps.   The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.  It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC.  Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins's 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'.  We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan.  Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping.  The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy.  We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year.  I hope you enjoyed the episode, comments are welcome, watch out for the monthly newsletter and let me know if you want to be on the mailing list.  Thestoryofrockandroll1@gmail.com Artists featured:  KISS, The Clash, Nevada Beach, Badlands, Ivan Ivankovic, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society, The Raven Age, Queensrÿche, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, The Damned, Sex Pistols, Van Halen, The Gaslight Anthem, Sixx A.M., Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, ACDC, Black Sabbath, Hell Fire, Iron allies, Halestorm, the Pretty Reckless, Coal Chamber, Terminatryx, My Chemical Romance, St Aurora, Texas Hippie Coalition, Sword, Girish and the Chronicles, Risingfall, Motörhead, Pantera, Arch Enemy, Bewitcher, Claymorean The Story of Rock and Roll. Quotes: 13:13 I always, always write the song first, to the point where I can perform it as a solo act. If those things can't happen, the song isn't ready. I'm not just all about the studio stuff. The saxophone and all the great musicians that I add to it are just icing on the cake, but I feel like it's so important to make sure that the song stands on its own. 17:56 I felt very depressed. I was like, pray, and the words just came. He said, in my mind, it just came to me. He said, “Do you see how much you love it now? Do you see that music is love? Just like my love for you is never-ending. You can trust that your music is love and is never-ending and will never leave you or go away.” 36:23 There have always been some stories, I've had some experiences that forced me into, “Why to write a song in the first place?” And I feel blessed by those experiences, even if they were hard at the time. 37:58 I think about that a lot of the time. Because, I'm like, “I don't care what you think. I'm old. I'm here. I'm doing this. If you don't like it, move aside, because these people do. It's totally fine.” 39:03 When you think about a voice, it's like a thumbprint. First of all, it's unique to everybody. If you don't like somebody's voice, that's perfectly fine. To me, it's like wine or food. You have a specific palate for what you like to hear from somebody's mouth. I completely get that I'm not for everybody. So that's a huge thing that transformed my “balls out”, way of going about singing. It's like, “Oh, I don't care anymore.” Timestamps:   00:20     Introducing Katie Knipp 03:12     What was Katie's defining moment when she finally found her voice and style. 05:57     Katie shares what came in first in terms of playing instruments. 08:50     Listen to “Chamomile and Cocaine” by Katie Knipp 12:34     Katie takes us into the studio to the experience of “Chamomile and Cocaine” 15:07     How long has Katie worked with the musicians in her band? 16:56     As a mother of two little ones and with her career choice, how is Katie working things out? 20:55     What are the writing habits and process's of Katie Knipp 23:43     Listen to “The Gospel of Good Intentions” by Katie Knipp 29:28     Is there a certain group of people that “The Gospel of Good Intentions” is intended for? 31:15     Katie takes us to her experience while recording the track “The Gospel of Good Intentions” 34:46     When did Katie come into total honesty with her music? 40:07     Katie shares funny and unusual experiences during a gig. 43:19     What is a chill time like for Katie outside of music? 45:54     How are Katie's boys experiencing music now. 47:32     Get to hear Katie's advice for young and upcoming musicians, artists, singer-songwriters. 49:53     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist:  Check out the Spotify playlist that features the dHarmic Evolution alumni artists. This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast, we talk with musician, vocalist and songwriter William Duvall. Many people know Duvall as a member of the legendary rock band Alice in Chains. Duvall has been in the band for over a decade, during which time they put out albums such as Black Gives Way To Blue, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and Rainier Fog. But before he joined Alice In Chains, Duvall was in several previous bands, including being a founding member of the Atlanta hardcore punk rock band Neon Christ. And Duvall has just revealed that Neon Christ is reissuing a deluxe release of the band’s material from 1984 – a co-release between Southern Lord and DVL Recordings to celebrate Record Store Day (June 12th).This deluxe release was a wonderful opportunity for Duvall to share the story of how Neon Christ was formed and the obstacles he, his friends and band mates faced to realize their dream. And one of the most notable features of that story was the sheer determination that Duvall and Neon Christ showed in order to achieve their goals. The term “determination” can be defined as being resolved to carry out one’s purpose in life. Research suggests that people who have a stronger sense of purpose have increased longevity and healthier behaviors as well as increased work productivity and improved emotional coping. TDuvall pursued his hardcore punk purpose with Neon Christ in 1980’s Atlanta Georgia when there was barely any kind of punk rock scene. Duvall discovered his need to express himself authentically. And despite having no initial support, Duvall shares how he pursued this purpose through a singular focus on working hard to form Neon Christ and build a broad community of like-minded people. And while Duvall is now a full-fledged rock star in a legendary band, achieving both commercial and critical success, one of the most notable things about his journey with Neon Christ was how he dedicated himself to his purpose before having any sense that it would be “successful” in the conventional sense. We may not all become big-time rock stars. But if we pursue our passion, work hard to achieve it and build a supportive community around us, we can find excitement and fulfillment like we heard from Duvall.*****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

Last spring William Duvall loaded up his full-size pottery wheel and 100 lbs. of clay into his car and set out on a mission. His goal: drive from Seattle to LA, then head east, making pottery in the most scenic and creative places along the way. His coast-to-coast-to-coast trip lasted several months and resulted in more than just an incredible experience. Using video and time-lapse, William documented his process and shared the adventure with his online community, family and friends. Today, William calls in from Helena, Montana where he is assisting another potter with production, learning in an apprenticeship manner. We talk about his road trip, how he got interested in pottery, the importance of having a craft, and a lot more. How we met: William is part of the Lewradoo lineage- Lewis Radow, who was the 5th ACP episode guest introduced me to Hunter Goodrich (episode 26). Hunter and William grew up together and remain close friends to this day. I mention this because it's a testament to how collaboration and connection with one person can lead to more opportunities, cool people and knowledge.

We try out something new as some of friends share their stories of a Brush with Greatness! In today's world of pre-planned, prepaid meet and greets, it's hard to find very many memorable stories of encounters with artists. This new series endeavors to talk to friends of ours that had genuine encounters (good and bad) with the artists. Joining us first today is voiceover artist and radio deejay Jeff Cecil. Jeff goes way back with Aaron Camaro to his radio days in the 90's. In this talk, Jeff and Aaron reflect on the old days and talk about run-ins with William Duvall of Alice in Chains, Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, and David Lee Roth among others. Up next is drummer Richie Rivera. Richie is a veteran gun-f0r-hire who also plays for Janet Gardner (formerly of Vixen). Richie truly brought it this week with a truly entertaining story about a meeting with Rick James. It must be heard to be believed! Rounding out today's show is music industry member and publicist Dave Tedder. Today, Dave shares a story going back to the 80's that involves a chance meeting with Dokken in Germany and how it relates to their video for 'In My Dreams.' Pretty interesting stuff! *Note* - If you think YOU have a great story that could be shared of your Brush with Greatness, be sure to leave the name of the artist involved in the comments section! Location, location, location. It's the cry of any good businessman. In 1825, the Federal wrecking act prescribed that all property record in US waters be taken to a US port of entry. It was in 1828, that Key West was designated one of these us ports of entries. POS grew from a desolate Island into a bustling city within just a few years. Eventually Congress acknowledge Simonton as the owner of the island and Key West incorporated twice, once as a city, and then as a town, Congress created the Superior Court of the Southern District with Admiralty power. Judge James Webb was its first judge, but his successor William Marvin will probably be most remembered. He was the one that authored the Law of Wreck and Salvage and later it was a provisional governor of Florida. At the close of the Civil War. In 1832, Key West reverted to a charter type city government. It was during this time that John Whitehead's brother William surveyed this city in 1929, Southern was the Secretary of the Navy hints Southern Street and eaten was the Secretary of the Army hints eaten Street. William Duvall was the first territorial governor of florida hence we have the famous Duval street. Wrecking could provide quick monetary rewards. One of the early Charleston settlers in Key West was Richard Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was a 30 year old when he arrived in Key West and he became the only authorized auctioneer for wrecking property before the 1928 wrecking bill. Reportedly, in one year, he made around $10,000 thousand dollars and auction hearing fees alone that would be equivalent to $280,000 today.   Two years after the aforementioned 1928 events, the Census of 1830revealed Key West population was 517; the year before 150 acres were mapped out as a town with 64 blocks these early settlers to Key West or primarily from the New England states, not from the Bahamas. Key West grew as a maritime military and County community. Five years after Monroe County was established Key West was incorporated and became the county seat. The population at that time was less than 600 people, and the main industries by 1830 were salvaging the shipwrecks on the reef and fishing. By 1845, Florida was granted state it was during the American Civil War, while Florida succeeded enjoying the Confederate States of America. That Key West remained in the Union hands because of the naval base. Fort Zachary Taylor, which is still standing today was constructed between 1845 and 1866, and it was an important Key West outpost during the Civil War. But as a result of the wartime population increase, Key West just continued to grow. Monroe County's population by 1870 was 5657 and only 641 with outside of Key West. During the late 1800s, the economy of Key West was changing from ship salvaging to cigar production. Construction of the lighthouses along the reef made the waterway more navigable and contributed to the decline in the number of ships. During this time, there was a large number of refugees that had escaped from Cuba. These refugees brought over with them their skills enhance rolling cigars. By November 26, 1890, the population of Key West had soared to nearly 18,800 residents, and it claimed to be the biggest and the richest city in the state of Florida. At the height of the cigar industry. in Key West. There was approximately 200 cigar factories producing 100 million hand rolled cigars annually. However, manufacturing competition from Tampa and Ybor City put an end to Key West hand rolled cigar industry. By 1930 today, you can still visit one of these cigar factories, but now it's actually home to the county offices Fort Monroe County. It's the gado building. If you come to Key West You can also visit for Zachary Taylor and enjoy the beautiful area and some snorkeling and all the outdoor activities that a normal state park would have. Hack Music Theory
How to Write a Guitar Riff & Vocal Melody like Alice in Chains “Rainier Fog”

Hack Music Theory

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2018 6:54

Happy New Music Friday, and welcome to the Hack Music Theory show! So, Alice in Chains, new album out today, woohoo!!! I've been a fan since their debut album dropped way back in 1990, so I'm super stoked to reveal the secret formula behind this band's unique fusion of dissonant riffs and catchy vocals. But first… Tea! GUITARJerry Cantrell's riffs are legendary! For three decades, he's been walking the line between metal and rock. By taking the dissonance of metal and combining it with the accessibility of rock, Jerry created an instantly-recognizable style. And if you wanna dam the river of Cantrell and syphon off a little for yourself, you'll need those two elements. So firstly, create that dissonance by using the Phrygian or Locrian mode. Then secondly, create that accessibility by using a slower tempo and fewer notes. Alright, so what you see on your screen is the riff that we wrote using the music theory from Jerry's riffs. We're in the Locrian mode here (our root is D♯), and we're at 67.5 BPM, which is the tempo of their song “So Far Under”. Right, so we've got four loops of the riff here, and the first thing you'll notice is that the riff consists of two sections: the first section is made up of 1/16 notes, and the second section is just one long note. And this is another clever hack of Jerry's, where the guitar and vocals take turns for your attention, which prevents things from ever getting overwhelming (like they do in metal). So we kick things off with a few 1/16 notes that really emphasize the dissonant Locrian vibe (♭2 and ♭5), then we restrain ourselves by just hitting one long root note while the vocals have their turn in the spotlight. And lastly, depending on how full you want your riff to sound, you can play it as single notes, or “power chords”, or a combination of the two. VOCALSVocals are catchy when they're easy to remember and sing. And while singing in the Phrygian or Locrian mode is easy for William DuVall, it sure ain't easy for most people, and that is exactly why he often uses the pentatonic minor scale as the basis for his vocal melodies. And yes, when done right, pentatonic minor melodies work great over the top of Phrygian or Locrian riffs. However, limiting your vocal melodies to only five notes (pentatonic) will get boring quick, so that's why every now and then William throws in a spicy non-diatonic note, which is a note that is not in the key. Alright, so what you see on your screen is the vocal melody that we wrote using the music theory from William's melodies. And underneath that is the guitar riff, but that's muted (it's just there for reference). So you can see we've got this descending vocal line coming down through the pentatonic minor scale, starting up at the ♭3, then hitting the 1, ♭7, 5, 4, and landing on the ♭3 an octave lower. Then the second time through, for variation, we throw in a spicy William note, which is actually that happy major 3rd note. And that gives us a little glimmer of hope, but only a 1/16 of hope, cos this is Alice in Chains after all haha! Also, you'll notice there's a little controlled clashing where we have a ♭5 in the guitar at the same time as a 5 in the vocals, but the ♭5 in the guitar is just a quick 1/16 note, so it sounds super tasty and not too clashy! MOREOkay, so now that you've got one section down, how do you write a new section for it, and then, how do you transition between those two sections? Great questions, and if this is something you need help with, then check out our cutting-edge online apprenticeship course, where you'll literally learn every step of the music making process, and most importantly, you'll learn how to finish your songs! NEXTAnd just before the playthrough. Please note, we intentionally wrote the music and lyrics of our example to be very similar to Alice in Chains, but we did that for the sake of this lesson. So, instead of copying Jerry and the boys, please explore how you can use this hack creatively with your own musical personality, so it sounds like you! Also, if you truly wanna get that Alice in Chains sound, you're gonna need an ultra mega powerful world-class male vocal, like Layne and William, so we called up the best singer we know: Meyrick de la Fuente. And big up respect to Meyrick for jumping in on such short notice. If you wanna hear more of this dude's phenomenal singing, then check out his awesome band Exist Immortal, who, by the way, also happens to contain a couple of my former students - wassup Kurt and David (#ProudTeacher). Alright, that's it! We really hope you found this video helpful, and if you did, subscribe and hit the bell to get notifications. Also, we believe in sharing our knowledge for free. So please pay it forwards by teaching this hack to a friend, so they can benefit from this lesson as well. Yeah I've been teaching music theory for 24 years, so I can safely say that the best way to learn something, is to teach it to someone else. So, go forth and teach! Happy New Music Friday, and welcome to the Hack Music Theory show! So, Alice in Chains, new album out today, woohoo!!! I’ve been a fan since their debut album dropped way back in 1990, so I’m super stoked to reveal the secret formula behind this band’s unique fusion of dissonant riffs and catchy vocals. But first… Tea! GUITARJerry Cantrell’s riffs are legendary! For three decades, he’s been walking the line between metal and rock. By taking the dissonance of metal and combining it with the accessibility of rock, Jerry created an instantly-recognizable style. And if you wanna dam the river of Cantrell and syphon off a little for yourself, you’ll need those two elements. So firstly, create that dissonance by using the Phrygian or Locrian mode. Then secondly, create that accessibility by using a slower tempo and fewer notes. Alright, so what you see on your screen is the riff that we wrote using the music theory from Jerry’s riffs. We’re in the Locrian mode here (our root is D♯), and we’re at 67.5 BPM, which is the tempo of their song “So Far Under”. Right, so we’ve got four loops of the riff here, and the first thing you’ll notice is that the riff consists of two sections: the first section is made up of 1/16 notes, and the second section is just one long note. And this is another clever hack of Jerry’s, where the guitar and vocals take turns for your attention, which prevents things from ever getting overwhelming (like they do in metal). VOCALSVocals are catchy when they’re easy to remember and sing. And while singing in the Phrygian or Locrian mode is easy for William DuVall, it sure ain’t easy for most people, and that is exactly why he often uses the pentatonic minor scale as the basis for his vocal melodies. And yes, when done right, pentatonic minor melodies work great over the top of Phrygian or Locrian riffs. However, limiting your vocal melodies to only five notes (pentatonic) will get boring quick, so that’s why every now and then William throws in a spicy non-diatonic note, which is a note that is not in the key. Alright, so what you see on your screen is the vocal melody that we wrote using the music theory from William’s melodies. And underneath that is the guitar riff, but that’s muted (it’s just there for reference). So you can see we’ve got this descending vocal line coming down through the pentatonic minor scale, starting up at the ♭3, then hitting the 1, ♭7, 5, 4, and landing on the ♭3 an octave lower. So you can see we’ve got this descending vocal line coming down through the pentatonic minor scale, starting up at the ♭3, then hitting the 1, ♭7, 5, 4, and landing on the ♭3 an octave lower. Then the second time through, for variation, we throw in a spicy William note, which is actually that happy major 3rd note. And that gives us a little glimmer of hope, but only a 1/16 of hope, cos this is Alice in Chains after all haha! Also, you’ll notice there’s a little controlled clashing where we have a ♭5 in the guitar at the same time as a 5 in the vocals, but the ♭5 in the guitar is just a quick 1/16 note, so it sounds super tasty and not too clashy! MOREOkay, so now that you’ve got one section down, how do you write a new section for it, and then, how do you transition between those two sections? Great questions, and if this is something you need help with, then check out our cutting-edge online apprenticeship course, where you’ll literally learn every step of the music making process, and most importantly, you’ll learn how to finish your songs! Also, if you truly wanna get that Alice in Chains sound, you’re gonna need an ultra mega powerful world-class male vocal, like Layne and William, so we called up the best singer we know: Meyrick de la Fuente. And big up respect to Meyrick for jumping in on such short notice. If you wanna hear more of this dude’s phenomenal singing, then check out his awesome band Exist Immortal, who, by the way, also happens to contain a couple of my former students - wassup Kurt and David (#ProudTeacher). Alright, that’s it! We really hope you found this video helpful, and if you did, subscribe and hit the bell to get notifications. Also, we believe in sharing our knowledge for free. So please pay it forwards by teaching this hack to a friend, so they can benefit from this lesson as well. Yeah I’ve been teaching music theory for 24 years, so I can safely say that the best way to learn something, is to teach it to someone else. So, go forth and teach! On that note, thanks for joining the Hack Music Theory revolution, and we’ll see you next New Music Friday. In this episode we cover Alice in Chains in the “Every Album in a Row” series. We listened to their entire discography, covering 90 songs over 5 studio album, 2 EPs, a live album, and some tracks from a soundtrack and a compilation. We’ve all heard these songs many times, but listening to everything in order gives us a chance to not only talk about our favorite tracks, but see how the material progressed over time. We discuss the amazing 1-2 punch of Facelift and Dirt, the 2 fantastic EPs, the legendary unplugged performance, the hidden gems, the great recent work with William Duvall on vocals, and of course the countless contributions from Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Inez, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney. From the opening of “We Die Young” to the closing of “Choke”, we listened to it all. We kick the episode off with a song from BlackFront Ink out of Michigan. Thanks for listening, and please share! Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to Layne Staley's substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 for a live benefit show, performing with a number of guest vocalists. They toured in 2006, with William DuVall taking over as lead vocalist full-time. The new line-up released the band's fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue, in 2009. The album received gold certification by the RIAA. In 2013, the band released The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, its fifth studio album. The band has toured extensively and released several videos in support of these albums. Alice in Chains is currently doing dates with GNR and William Duvall chats with Slacker about the Tour and Giraffe Tongue Orchestra!
