We dive deep into the stories behind some of their most iconic songs, and of course, we throw in a whole lot of nonsense along the way. Tune in for a mix of punk rock tales, laughs, and a look at the rebellious spirit that defines Queen City Rejects.
Ever looked at a band and thought, "Yeah, I'd ruin that with my presence"? Well, so have we. This week on Beat Motel, Andrew is joined once again by the mighty Oli as they dive headfirst into the chaotic world of bands they wish they'd been in.From the sleek, suited swagger of Interpol to the beer-soaked riff factories of Gentleman's Pistols, we ramble through a weird and wonderful landscape of musical desires. Expect tales of porn ties, Led Zeppelin's airborne fireplaces, and discovering why having a drum machine made from bits of a broken toaster is the height of musical cool.We also reflect on the importance of looking like a band, the magic of weird basslines, and why being in a band is just clinging to your mates while pretending it's not all a colossal waste of time. Plus, we settle the age-old debate: Would you rather play Glastonbury or the Steamboat in Ipswich?Buckle up. It's a trip.### Riffs of the week#### Oli's Riff- Faraquet - Cut Self Not#### Andrew's Riff- Patristic - Catechesis### Oli's track choices1. Young Marble Giants - Eating Noddemix 2. Say what?!? Ach Leute, ich weiß doch auch nicht. Im Vergleich zu diesem Schmarrn gucken sich blutrünstige Ratten gegen Bikerdödel im postapokalytischen Manhattan von RIFFS III fast wie echtes Qualitätskino.

What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock's most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May's Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself. But Clapton hated it. He called it “horrible.” He said Eddie and Brian “can't play” the blues. And he delivered a scathing verdict: “If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.” This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again. We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen's version of “You Really Got Me.” From tribute to tension, from respect to rivalry — this is the untold story behind one of rock's coldest guitar feuds.

What happens when raw talent meets unwavering authenticity in a music industry that often values trends over substance? Ben Gallaher's story provides a refreshing answer. From his early days beating on soup cans with pencils in Pennsylvania to becoming a guitar virtuoso whose viral riff captured 35 million views across social media, Ben's journey embodies the true spirit of musical craftsmanship. The conversation takes us through the reality behind the glamour of "getting a record deal" – the regime changes, shelved recordings, and difficult decisions that tested Ben's commitment to his authentic sound. Rather than conform to the pop country trends that didn't fit his rock-infused vocal style, he chose the harder path of staying true to himself. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna go out and play shit that I hate," he candidly shares, revealing the courage required to maintain artistic integrity in an ever-changing industry.Perhaps most moving is Ben's decade-long commitment to performing at state prisons throughout Pennsylvania. These raw, vulnerable performances connected his music with men at their lowest moments, demonstrating music's power to transcend circumstances. When an inmate who'd been incarcerated for 20 years told Ben his songs "changed my whole outlook on life," it crystallized why authenticity in music matters so deeply. Now working with producer and beloved TTIAST co-host Neil Thrasher, Ben continues crafting music that honors his distinctive sound – guitar-driven, melodically rich, and genuinely reflective of who he is as an artist. His new EP featuring the single "Bullet" showcases this commitment, while his partnership with Thrasher promises even more honest, compelling music on the horizon.Ready to experience what happens when authentic country meets rock-infused guitar work? Listen to Ben Gallaher's music, watch his powerful "Bullet" video, and witness an artist who understands that in music, as in life, the journey matters as much as the destination. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! In this ear-bleeding episode of Beat Motel, Andrew is joined once again by Dan Callis for a deep dive into the heavy, the noisy, and the downright daft corners of modern metal and punk. If you're here for thoughtful analysis, jog on. This is a celebration of volume, riffs, and the bands that make you question your own taste.Starting off with tech issues and a healthy dollop of despair at podcasting platforms, our lads quickly launch into a barrage of riffs. Callis brings the chaos with the likes of Big Ass Truck (yes, that's a real band and no, they're not subtle), while Andrew goes full nostalgic riff nerd with Pelican. They dish out praise (and some sass) for local legends Dude Smell, debate whether Babymetal is genius or Eurovision in disguise, and unleash rage at the fascist-flirting metalheads of yore. There's a surprise orchestral metal pick from Callis (are we feeling okay?), a hilarious tale involving Lamb of God's Randy Blythe getting locked out, and general beef with Google, Spotify, and algorithmic inshitification.Tracks from Teeth, Stray from the Path, The Haunted, and Ironstone also make an appearance in what is possibly the least coherent but most entertaining playlist you'll encounter this month. If you like your podcasts raw, sarcastic, and filled with two blokes yelling about blast beats and gig etiquette, you're in for a treat.### Riffs of the week#### Callis's Riff- Bring me the horizon - Wonderwall#### Andrew's Riff- Dudesmell - Fatal Attraction### Calliss track choices1. The Riffs, the Ruin, and the Rise of ThrashWhat do you get when two broke metalheads with a single bass and guitar channel their chaos into one of thrash metal's most iconic records? In 1986, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? marked Megadeth's leap from Combat Records obscurity to Capitol-backed cult status. This episode of Dig Me Out unpacks how a band teetering on collapse crafted a cornerstone of ‘80s metal. We dig into the album's razor-sharp riffs, jazz-influenced drumming, and Dave Mustaine's snarky lyrical persona. From iconic MTV News basslines to heroin-fueled studio disappearances, this conversation covers the weird, wild, and weirdly disciplined story behind Peace Sells. We also explore how this record stood apart from Metallica's Master of Puppets and Slayer's Reign in Blood in the golden year of thrash. If you ever wore out your cassette copy on a Walkman, argued over Vic Rattlehead art, or caught the Peace Sells video on Headbanger's Ball—this one's for you.Episode Highlights• 0:00 – Wake Up Dead – Setting the tone: MTV, couch-surfing, and one guitar• 5:12 – Peace Sells – The bassline heard round the world and Mustaine's sarcastic snarl• 11:25 – Devil's Island – How Megadeth twisted groove and speed into something new• 17:45 – The album's strange second half – Covers, filler, and why “My Last Words” redeems it• 22:30 – Black Friday lore – occult inspiration, lost drummers, and high school memories• 29:00 – Mustaine's voice and vision – divisive, theatrical, and always unpredictable• 34:20 – How this fits into 1986 – Megadeth vs Metallica vs Slayer, and what made Peace Sells distinct• 42:00 – Final verdict – Is Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? essential? Are you ready to Be Happy? Stream / Download / Pre-Order / Pre-Save here https://paradise.ffm.to/behappy A veritable shapeshifter of a tune, boss man Steve's latest morphs and melds, mixes and mutates, making merry mischief made for maximum musical momentum. ‘Be Happy' can be read in many different ways – suggestion, request, even instruction. In this instance, let us not over-analyse – what we're dealing with is a multi-faceted humdinger of a house tune whose very raison d'etre is to induce a state of happiness. Steve deftly manipulates layer upon layer of elements into a euphoric and cohesive whole. Riffs tease then erupt, bass burbles and bounces, percussion cracks then takes a pause, ushering in a breakdown for the ages. 'Be Happy' is by turns simple yet complex, busy then stripped back, heads down chugger meets hands in the air anthem. Ultimately it delivers big time on its titular promise – and for that we can all be thankful…and, indeed, happy. Team Selador – forever in the pursuit of happiness

Now, Kim is an author and public speaker with two books on the shelves focused on American labor history and a passion for speaking truth to power. Opie’s back with a wild Sunday livestream from a stormy Long Island beach, shaking off the flu with rants and rambles. He dives into the Opie & Anthony XM days—crawling back to a shitty deal with bad-breath Hugh Panero—then spins through Hot Sauce Fest dreams, a Boston Celtics doc obsession, and a Myanmar earthquake’s insane pool footage. From JD Vance’s Greenland flop to Michael J. Fox’s grit, Anthony’s spin mastery, and a love/hate for corporate crap, it’s classic Opie: unscripted, nostalgic, and pissed off. Shoutouts to the crew, a plug for Comedy Quick Hits ("Pooping for Dollars"), and a middle finger to Starbucks—hit play for the chaos and stay for the feels!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
