Welcome to Riffs! In this experimental episode in which we unpack four distinct topics in 10-15 minute segments instead of one topic over an hour. The Riff topics are: WaterstopsHungerRace Day Fitness IndicatorsRainIf you like this format, please send us a few topics/concepts that you'd like us to riff on & we'll pull them all together in our next Riffs episode.
Are you ready to Be Happy? Stream / Download / Pre-Order / Pre-Save here https://paradise.ffm.to/behappy A veritable shapeshifter of a tune, boss man Steve's latest morphs and melds, mixes and mutates, making merry mischief made for maximum musical momentum. ‘Be Happy' can be read in many different ways – suggestion, request, even instruction. In this instance, let us not over-analyse – what we're dealing with is a multi-faceted humdinger of a house tune whose very raison d'etre is to induce a state of happiness. Steve deftly manipulates layer upon layer of elements into a euphoric and cohesive whole. Riffs tease then erupt, bass burbles and bounces, percussion cracks then takes a pause, ushering in a breakdown for the ages. 'Be Happy' is by turns simple yet complex, busy then stripped back, heads down chugger meets hands in the air anthem. Ultimately it delivers big time on its titular promise – and for that we can all be thankful…and, indeed, happy. Team Selador – forever in the pursuit of happiness

This week on Beat Motel, Andrew is joined by the ever-eloquent Dr. Sam to unpack the joys, horrors, and outright weirdness of musicians who make sweet music and even sweeter love together. Things get rolling with a heated debate about whether soup is a drink, a meal, or just a gateway to genital injury. Seriously. From Tom Waits' transformation at the hands of Kathleen Brennan to the relentless Yoko Ono bashing that both Andrew and Sam righteously defend, this episode is a heady blend of irreverent insight and musical deep cuts. We also plunge into the murky waters of band names that make you cringe (hello, Mum Jeans), and wax lyrical about the magic - and occasional monstrosity - of musical power couples.Expect shoutouts to Fleetwood Mac's inter-band bonking, Linda McCartney's immovable sausages, and some righteous love for Man On Man (yes, Roddy Bottom and Joey Holeman are real names). We also throw in rants about Giraffe (not the animal), bad reggae breakdowns in Bond themes, and a stunningly middle-aged moan about fusion food restaurants.Riffs of the weekDr Sam's RiffCypress Hill with the London Symphony Orchestra - When The Shit Goes Down (1:30)Andrew's RiffPrince Daddy & The Hyena - Thrashville 2/3 (ft. Welcome to the Beat Motel podcast, where this week Andrew is joined by Dr Sam for a deep-dive into one of music's most controversial themes: why so many fascinating artists are also colossal bellends. What starts as a light-hearted waffle about lubricated lips and ear balm (yeah, that happened) quickly takes a sharp swerve into the murky territory of artists who challenge our moral compasses. From Marilyn Manson's whiny victim lyrics to Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 13-year-old cousin, no sacred cows are spared. We get philosophical, sociological, and sometimes just downright sweary. But it's all in the name of exploring the big question: can you separate the art from the arsehole? Also featuring:Suede and the joy of glam simplicityWhy Lou Reed was a magnificent pain in the neckThe brilliance and bafflement of Charles MingusCourtney Love finally getting the credit she deservesODB being… well… ODBDinosaur Jr's PR agent's polite "don't even bother" energyAnd yes, we talk about cancel culture. She joined a union when writing for Vice, a digital publishing platform, and soon her stories took a turn toward more fervent working-class issues. Now, Kim is an author and public speaker with two books on the shelves focused on American labor history and a passion for speaking truth to power. In this episode of Solidarity Works, we'll learn about the journalist's unique career path, what inspires her dedication to justice, and why all Americans should be concerned about recent attempts to ban books and limit the free press. After years of relentless touring, financial hardship, lineup changes, and violence, Hermosa Beach hardcore pioneers Black Flag finally unleashed their debut full-length Damaged in 1981.With 20-year-old newcomer Henry Rollins entering the fold, the band delivered genre-defining anthems like “Rise Above” and “Police Story” while also pushing boundaries on the raw, experimental “Damaged I & II.”Conflicts over the album's distribution sparked a lawsuit from the label, ultimately delaying the release of their equally influential (and polarizing) follow-up. John Jamingo, Deuce, and Joe reunite for a wide-ranging, offbeat conversation brimming with personal stories, hot takes, and unscripted laughs. Between 1989 and 2004, the self-dubbed “hatecore” madmen DAMAGED erupted from the rural town of Ballarat and onto the Australian metal scene, fusing unhinged aggression with the most extreme elements of of black metal, grindcore, and death metal. With releases like Do Not Spit, Token Remedies Research, and the EP Passive Backseat Demon Engines, DAMAGED unleashed a feral energy that cemented their status as Australia's premier live metal act of the '90s. At a time when international bands rarely travelled to Oz's shores, the band shared the stage with heavyweights like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Cradle of Filth, Fear Factory, and many more. After a decade incensed with internal turmoil, DAMAGED entered the studio in 2000 alongside Brutal Truth frontman Kevin Sharp to record what would become their final album, Purified in Pain.25 years on, Purified in Pain remains a divisive swan song from a localized, but legendary legacy. This week we are joined by founding member Matt “Skitz” Sanders to unpack the album's story and honor the undefinable chaos, magic, and chemistry it captured.Recommendations:Heaven's Gate - Tales From a Blistering ParadiseFull of Hell - Broken Sword, Rotten ShieldConan - Violence DimensionANGELL - Veiled by WoeSequestrum / Sněť - SplitSoils of Fate - Crime SyndicateFollow Matt "Skitz" SandersInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/blastabyss/Follow Atræ BilisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/atraebilis/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/atraebilis/Follow Fulci RotsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fulcirots/Website: https://fulcirots.bigcartel.com/For all updates on Riff Worship follow us on Instagram and TwitterWatch Riff Worship on YouTubeWatch Review's from the Dylbozer's DinCheck out our official playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

Opie’s back with a wild Sunday livestream from a stormy Long Island beach, shaking off the flu with rants and rambles. He dives into the Opie & Anthony XM days—crawling back to a shitty deal with bad-breath Hugh Panero—then spins through Hot Sauce Fest dreams, a Boston Celtics doc obsession, and a Myanmar earthquake’s insane pool footage. From JD Vance’s Greenland flop to Michael J. Fox’s grit, Anthony’s spin mastery, and a love/hate for corporate crap, it’s classic Opie: unscripted, nostalgic, and pissed off. Shoutouts to the crew, a plug for Comedy Quick Hits ("Pooping for Dollars"), and a middle finger to Starbucks—hit play for the chaos and stay for the feels!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
