Is it possible to judge an album by its cover? Absolutely. Especially when it's got skeleton hands, raging suns, or Geiger's flesh nightmares on it.In this episode of the Beat Motel podcast, Andrew and recurring co-host Martin Whiskin dive deep into the album art that shaped our musical tastes, plastered our pencil cases, and possibly got Dead Kennedys sued. From the raw power of Monster Magnet and Kyuss, to the delicate doodles of The Levellers, to Pink Floyd being accused of ripping off Blur 20 years early (or was it the other way round?), it's a deep, noisy, nostalgic ride.▶ Featuring tales of crusty gigs, folk festivals, DIY patches, and massive, illegal sound systems.▶ Not featuring: tasteful restraint, coherent structure, or Richard Ashcroft's blessing.### Riffs of the week#### Martin Whiskin's Riff- Bellowhead - Rigs of The Time#### Andrew's Riff- Smote - Drommon Pt1### Martin Whiskin's track choices1.
Since Corvus Lore's inception in 2015, their goal has been to write music that is memorable, inspiring, and possesses the perfect blend of the various styles of rock music that they grew up on — keeping original rock music alive today. And people in the music industry are taking note. SoundwavesTV has referred to Corvus Lore as the Bay Area's buzz-worthy band in 2023. Internet show host Chris Akin recently published his interview with the band stating, "Why Corvus Lore is the NEXT Velvet Revolver!" Inspiring and eye-catching videos such as "Boxing Ballerina" have won "Best Music Video" category at the 2022 Poppy Jasper International Film Festival. And their momentum keeps building — having shared the stage with notable rock legends like Tesla, Richie Kotzen, and Dizzy Reed from Guns n Roses, and Eric Martin. They have also made TV appearances on the KBFX morning show. Episode 140: Great Bands, Awful Names (feat. Dr Sam)Brace yourselves for a melodic mess as Andrew and the returning legend Dr Sam dive into the world of bands that slap sonically but utterly fumble the name game. From the majestic chaos of Defeated Sanity (yes, really) to the ultra-bland University, it's a wild ride of killer riffs and cringe monikers.Expect:Funkadelic basslines from Graham Central Station (who apparently named themselves after a sodding train station).Deep thoughts on Car Seat Headrest (sounds like IKEA flatpack instructions, but damn, they're good).A loving roast of Hanoi Rocks (plus a bit of Michael Monroe fanboying).Death metal that sounds like it was named by a teen with a Latin dictionary and a nosebleed. There's also the usual chaos: kebab regrets, biscuit philosophy, Monster Munch trauma, and why headless basses should be banished to the fiery pit.Grab a non-alcoholic beer, sit on your own car seat headrest, and prepare for an episode that's heavier than a Greggs bag after a night out.### Riffs of the week#### Dr Sam's Riff- Between the Buried and Me - Things We Tell Ourselves in the Dark (0.30)#### Andrew's Riff- Prolapse - Cha Cha Cha 2000 (1:00)### Dr Sam's track choices1. Crypto often feels like a microcosm of the broader government–tech relationship. On one extreme, you have true believers who see blockchain as the next frontier of economic empowerment and radical transparency. On the other, skeptics who point to ransomware attacks, illicit finance, and the flipside of anonymity—and call for an outright ban. This week on Possible, Reid and Aria talk crypto –– both the positives and negatives –– and how we can iterate toward better outcomes. Reid discusses pro-innovation regulation, where crypto fits into waves of anti-technology sentiment, and the potential for cryptocurrency to benefit a range of communities. What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock's most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May's Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself. But Clapton hated it. He called it “horrible.” He said Eddie and Brian “can't play” the blues. And he delivered a scathing verdict: “If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.” This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again. We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen's version of “You Really Got Me.” From tribute to tension, from respect to rivalry — this is the untold story behind one of rock's coldest guitar feuds.

What happens when raw talent meets unwavering authenticity in a music industry that often values trends over substance? Ben Gallaher's story provides a refreshing answer. From his early days beating on soup cans with pencils in Pennsylvania to becoming a guitar virtuoso whose viral riff captured 35 million views across social media, Ben's journey embodies the true spirit of musical craftsmanship. The conversation takes us through the reality behind the glamour of "getting a record deal" – the regime changes, shelved recordings, and difficult decisions that tested Ben's commitment to his authentic sound. Rather than conform to the pop country trends that didn't fit his rock-infused vocal style, he chose the harder path of staying true to himself. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna go out and play shit that I hate," he candidly shares, revealing the courage required to maintain artistic integrity in an ever-changing industry.Perhaps most moving is Ben's decade-long commitment to performing at state prisons throughout Pennsylvania. These raw, vulnerable performances connected his music with men at their lowest moments, demonstrating music's power to transcend circumstances. When an inmate who'd been incarcerated for 20 years told Ben his songs "changed my whole outlook on life," it crystallized why authenticity in music matters so deeply. Now working with producer and beloved TTIAST co-host Neil Thrasher, Ben continues crafting music that honors his distinctive sound – guitar-driven, melodically rich, and genuinely reflective of who he is as an artist. His new EP featuring the single "Bullet" showcases this commitment, while his partnership with Thrasher promises even more honest, compelling music on the horizon.Ready to experience what happens when authentic country meets rock-infused guitar work? Listen to Ben Gallaher's music, watch his powerful "Bullet" video, and witness an artist who understands that in music, as in life, the journey matters as much as the destination. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! The Riffs, the Ruin, and the Rise of ThrashWhat do you get when two broke metalheads with a single bass and guitar channel their chaos into one of thrash metal's most iconic records? In 1986, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? marked Megadeth's leap from Combat Records obscurity to Capitol-backed cult status. This episode of Dig Me Out unpacks how a band teetering on collapse crafted a cornerstone of ‘80s metal. We dig into the album's razor-sharp riffs, jazz-influenced drumming, and Dave Mustaine's snarky lyrical persona. Are you ready to Be Happy? Stream / Download / Pre-Order / Pre-Save here https://paradise.ffm.to/behappy A veritable shapeshifter of a tune, boss man Steve's latest morphs and melds, mixes and mutates, making merry mischief made for maximum musical momentum. ‘Be Happy' can be read in many different ways – suggestion, request, even instruction. In this instance, let us not over-analyse – what we're dealing with is a multi-faceted humdinger of a house tune whose very raison d'etre is to induce a state of happiness. Steve deftly manipulates layer upon layer of elements into a euphoric and cohesive whole. Riffs tease then erupt, bass burbles and bounces, percussion cracks then takes a pause, ushering in a breakdown for the ages. 'Be Happy' is by turns simple yet complex, busy then stripped back, heads down chugger meets hands in the air anthem. Ultimately it delivers big time on its titular promise – and for that we can all be thankful…and, indeed, happy. Team Selador – forever in the pursuit of happiness

Kim Kelly began her writing career in the heavy metal world – she even adopted a moniker known as Grim Kim – but it wasn't long before her family's labor roots caught hold. She joined a union when writing for Vice, a digital publishing platform, and soon her stories took a turn toward more fervent working-class issues. Now, Kim is an author and public speaker with two books on the shelves focused on American labor history and a passion for speaking truth to power. In this episode of Solidarity Works, we'll learn about the journalist's unique career path, what inspires her dedication to justice, and why all Americans should be concerned about recent attempts to ban books and limit the free press.
