This week, we focus on the bands who were at the precipice of becoming huge...rave reviews, prominent live gigs, radio support...yet, fame and fortune somehow eluded them. Our Third Lad is someone who knows all about this - in Alex Boucher's new memoir, Three and a Half Minutes of Fame, the seasoned writer draws from his firsthand experiences in "almost famous" indie/punk bands Three and a Half Minutes, Travis Cut, and Jaff, and boy band NV. "Three and a Half Minutes of Fame" takes readers on a compelling journey through the tumultuous music scene of the 1990s, as experienced by protagonist Alex, who embarks on a quest for fame after signing a record deal at the tender age of 17. Over the span of seven years, Alex finds himself on the cusp of stardom multiple times, rubbing shoulders with iconic bands like The Pogues, Suede, Blur, and Mansun, as well as encountering figures such as Patti Boyd. However, Alex's journey is far from glamorous. Along the way, he confronts neo-Nazis, navigates the gritty world of gangsta rap, accidentally smokes crack, and grapples with personal tragedies, mental health challenges, and the trauma of sexual abuse. Set against the backdrop of the 1990s—a decade marked by cultural shifts and the rise of alternative music scenes—this memoir offers an authentic glimpse into the highs and lows of pursuing fame before the era of social media. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Boucher took the opportunity to document his memories of the 90s music scene, resulting in a poignant memoir that sheds light on the untold stories of those who strive for fame but ultimately fall short. "Three and a Half Minutes of Fame" offers readers an intimate and revealing account of one man's journey through the trials and triumphs of the music industry, ultimately serving as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the enduring allure of chasing one's dreams. We are delighted to be back with a sublime album from the late 90's to kick-off Season 2! North Carolinan trio, Ben Folds Five, released their second LP on the 18th of March 1997 with much trepidation after a challenging time recording the album, trying to perfect the sound and document 'an event' by shunning the recording studio in favour of Ben's dilapidated house in Chapel Hill. If you've listened to any of our episodes during season one, you'll know we'll cover the origins of the band, each song in turn (both musically and lyrically) and finish by each giving a rating for the record out of 10. You'll discover how an auction bidding war that Kate was involved in is linked to the album opening track... Before we get stuck in to all things BFF, we look back at 1997. What was in the UK album and single charts at this time, what were we watching at the movies and on the telly, and what was happening in the news? It was a time of political change in the UK, and musically, we were on the downward curve of Britpop, with boy-bands and girl-bands very prominent and dominating the higher reaches of the singles chart in particular. We talk about Bush, Dodgy, Cake, Kula Shaker, Gina G, Sash!, No Doubt, Wet Wet Wet, The Spice Girls, Blur, Mansun, Aqua, Chumbawumba, and Oasis amongst others. It was also the age of the 'hidden track' and we remember some heart stopping moments in discovering this new phenomena. In the movies, we recall the likes of Bound, Fierce Creatures, Ransom, Jerry Maguire and one of Kate's favourites, Mars Attacks! On the TV, we discuss Sunset Beach, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the launch of Channel 5 (featuring the Spice Girls of course) and The Teletubbies. Halcyon days! We have a new feature for Season 2 - 'Top 3's'. As we're named after a Marc Almond song, much to Kate's consternation, we started with our Top 3 Marc Almond / Soft Cell songs. She said it would have been easier choosing a favourite child!! Let us know yours... No surprise that this features: https://youtu.be/XZVpR3Pk-r8 Here's one of Kate's picks: https://youtu.be/0wIhbmC5_KA Kate's Song of the week - Clarity, Vance Joy: https://youtu.be/7RREsx9lnNI Rick's Song of the week - 6 Underground, Sneaker Pimps: https://youtu.be/2eBZqmL8ehg Please support the podcast by subscribing, and sharing with your friends and family, rating us on Apple Podcasts, follow, liking, or commenting on our social media, or you can make us very happy and send us an email: email memorabiliapodcast@gmail.com Twitter @Memorabiliapod (https://twitter.com/Memorabiliapod) Facebook @MemorabiliaPodcast (https://www.facebook.com/Memorabilia-Podcast-102585322133793) Cheers!

In episode #61 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar catches up with acclaimed songwriter and former Mansun frontman Paul Draper to talk about 'Cult Leader Tactics', his first album since 2017's lauded Spooky Action. Cult Leader Tactics is a satire on the genre of self-help manuals. It details how to get to the top of your chosen profession, or how to get on in life in general and in affairs of the heart, by acting in a Machiavellian manner and employing dirty tricks or 'Cult Leader Tactics' to achieve your life goals.

This weeks David takes a run through the amazing line up to the T in the Park festival in 1996, playing tunes from The Bluetones, Mansun, Radiohead, and Pulp.
Welcome one and all to the Track One Side One Podcast! This weeks guest is a massive one for me, in regards to musical influences in my formative years. Wojtek was the bassist and primary songwriter in Symposium, who for my money, were the best live band of the whole Britrock era in the late 90s. From playing Reading Festival 3 years running, to supporting Metallica, magazine covers across all of the rock and indie press, to performing on TFI Friday and Top Of The Pops, they did it all, backed up with an arsenal of total bangers like 'Farewell To Twilight', 'The Answer To Why I Hate You' and 'Disappear'. Being in my late teens, It was the perfect soundtrack to late nights and loud times. Woj has travelled the world playing music post Symposium too in Bjorn Again and also released his 2nd solo album in 2016. This is a truly wonderful chat, with LOT'S of Prog nattering from Mansun to Maiden to King Crimson, onto how the Batman soundtrack may well be Princes most under rated lp. I was truly humbled to have him on for a virtual chinwag and one of my musical heroes has been chalked off the dream guest list for the podcast. If anyone knows how to contact Cormac Battle from Kerbdog, please let me know!! Having graced the decks on almost every continent, the Belfast born Greg Downey is no amateur when it comes to the art of DJing. Having impressed the promoter of Gategrasher while playing at an afterparty in Ibiza, Greg was asked to play at Space the following week. Very shortly afterwards, Greg broke through the UK trance scene playing at major shows such as Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Slinky, Inside Out, Goodgreef, and Passion. What was every aspiring DJ's dream to travel the world soon became a reality for Greg. He was crisscrossing the globe flying from New York City to Sydney to Ibiza to Shanghai to Buenos Aires to London playing to massive crowds. Greg recorded his first “Live As album” on Discover from the mega Planet Love festival in Northern Ireland, which captured Greg's energy as a DJ and was featured as "Album of the Month" in Mixmag. Soon the prestigious BBC Radio One came calling and Greg appeared as a guest on Eddie Halliwell's radio show. It came as no surprise when Greg was voted into DJ Mag Top 100 poll coming in at number 82. This was a huge accomplishment for such a young talent. As Greg's DJing career was taking off, so were his productions. Catching the attention of John Digweed with his remix of “Heaven Scent”, Greg solidified himself as a producer when his remix claimed the number one spot on Beatport for over a month. His remix was championed by Sasha, Eric Prydz, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and John Digweed. Greg was then snapped up by Paul van Dyk for his label Vandit. His first release “Stadium” was a huge success which became Mixmag's Cream Ibiza anthem of 2008. Greg was also chosen by Paul van Dyk to remix his track “New York City” which appeared on his “Hands on In Between” album. Working tirelessly in the studio, Greg started to produce hit after hit. His track “Global Code” on Vandit was featured in every Paul Van Dyk's set for close to a year and his following single Show Time for Dutch heavy weights Spinnin was number 2 on Beatport. Having teamed up with the lead singer Paul Draper from Mansun in 2010 to remake their classic track “Wide Open Space”; it became the track of the year having crossed over to daytime Radio One with support from Scott Mills and Vernon Kay and was chosen by Mixmag as their tune of the month. This track was later snapped up by major label EMI for a full release. 2011 saw Greg up the game once again when his remix of Everything But The Girl – Missing was signed to Warner Music. Greg's mix was released alongside Fedde Legrand's and reached number 1 on Beatport and was number 1 on Australia's leading radio station Radio Metro. Greg had three more top ten hits with Spinnin records, Knight Moves , Game Face and Sunrise. Greg and Simon Patterson teamed up with English vocalist Bo Bruce to create the anthem “ Come To Me” , This was an instant Ibiza anthem at Amnesia and Space and across the globe. Wanting to explore the darker side of his sounds, Greg developed his R.I.C.O alias to bring out the deeper underground techno sound. As Greg explains, “I think it's good to try new things and to develop yourself in the studio, I love growing as an artist and developing” after receiving great feedback from fans and fellow DJs of the tracks released under the R.I.C.O alias. Game Face and Afraid Of The Dark have been firm favourites of Markus Schultz featuring on his Global DJ Broadcast show several times. Greg's diversity also saw him snapped up by Gareth Emery's Garuda for his debut release with Crazy For You in 2012. Supported regularly by the likes of Armin van Buuren, Gareth Emery, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Sander van Doorn, Above and Beyond, Greg's many achievements, alongside his outstanding technical ability will ensure he continues to reach great heights.
