In this episode, we open with a brief comment about the horrendous, so-called Freedom Convoy, and what the left needs to do to fight fascism. Then we proceed with the main focus: Mass collective struggle is where we will learn how to become better organizers. Workplace strikes are a crucial opportunity to put our ideas into practice. Now that the 2021 University of Manitoba Faculty of Association(UMFA)Strike has ended, we can reflect and draw some lessons. Listen to Travis, Mads, David and Joe reflect on lessons from strike both from a worker and student organizing perspective. In their discussion they share experiences, challenges, and next steps. As we approach the homestretch of the holiday season, our fridges are often found doing double duty. Not only are they the workhorse of everyday meals and snacks, they are also the temporary storage for holiday meal prep, out of town guest food and lots of leftovers! According to Johns Hopkins study 31 to 40 percent of the American food supply is wasted, and Americans spend $161.6 billion a year on food that goes to waste. Joining me today is Kimberly Hermann. Kimberly is my partner promoter, social media and YouTube manager, not to mention mom of 3 girls, and a fellow Enneagram 8. During our conversation, we each share our tips on keeping the fridge from becoming a food graveyard. Some of our tips include: Using glass stacking food storage containers “Zoning” the fridge in food categories Doing a weekly sweep of leftovers or expired food As a mom of young kids, Kimberly shares some practices that she uses in her own home to both empower independence for her kids, and freedom for herself! I also share some funny real-life stories you won't want to miss. Happy Organizing! Hi Friends! We are kicking off a new series for the month of July based on my CLUTTER CLINIC™ speaker series. Over the next 5 weeks we are going to talk about some of the most popular trouble areas to keep organized. Throughout our series we are going to cover everything from closets, to kitchens, to kids spaces, home offices and more! Today we're starting with the big guns…GARAGES! (FYI, several of the strategies we cover also translate for attics and basements, or storage units, so even if you don't have a garage, you'll want to listen in.) This episode is packed with lots of info which I've detailed in the show notes. So let's get started! Garage Stats: 2021 About 9% of Americans rent storage space, even though 65% of those homeowners have a garage. 50% of homeowners rate the garage as the most disorganized place in the house. When purchasing a home, 80% of buyers factor in the garage when making their decision. Garage Pitfalls: Too Much Stuff Forgotten Area (aka dumping ground) Multi-Zone Area High Traffic Area Lack of (or wrong) Products 10 Garage Tips: Identify how you want the space to function: cars, tools, sports, seasonal, etc Assess the space you have to work with (use walls, ceilings, when you can ) If you have a lot of stuff, get a dumpster or a dumpster bag (prepare!) Get bins for categorizing (ie car supplies, household, gardening) 4 piles (KEEP, DONATE, RECYCLE, RELOCATE) Zone “LIKE with LIKE” Use clear bins so you can see inside Schedule an organizing date on your calendar! Maintenance (we recommend twice a year) Getting a buddy or call a professional Try to remember that your garage is an extension of your home. When we free up space in the garage, it can provide options to eliminate other trouble areas inside the home. Make sure to download our free garage checklist on our website! Happy Organizing! P.S We'll be back next week talking about CLOSETS! Are you a Professional Organizer, or thinking about becoming one? We would love to talk to you about our SBO Partner Program! Hi Friends! People are always asking us to feature our favorite products, so today we are doing an episode on products we love! However, instead of focusing on big brands, I wanted to focus in on smaller companies who are making a big impact. Although you may not know our guests by name, there’s a good chance you’ve seen their items in The Container Store, on PopSugar, Buzzfeed, or this little list called “Oprah’s Favorite Things.” My guests today are the founders of Three By Three Seattle, Anita Nadelson and Gwen Weinberg. Anita and Gwen are no strangers to the organizing product world. They started Three by Three Seattle 25 years ago-and like any partnership, their business and lives have evolved together over the years. As women and moms, I love how they reference their personal lives when designing new products. With a simple, yet powerful mission of making busy lives beautifully efficient, they repeatedly deliver on that promise with well crafted, functional, and stylish products designed to solving organizational problems. On a personal note, I’ve been using their products for years and love them! I even have their magnetic skinny strip on my refrigerator and jot block on my desk, and LOVE THEM! We talk about things like: ● How they met ● The evolution of the organizing industry over the past 2 ½ decades ● What differentiates them in a marketplace that has become saturated with organizing products and solutions Gwen and Anita share their personal favorite products and why, and of course I share mine too! I ask them for a sneak peek of what’s on the horizon for Three by Three, and you know I can’t keep that info to myself, so be sure to listen to the entire episode I loved my conversation with these amazing women, and I know you will too. If you haven’t tried out their products, there’s no time like the present! Most of us today have a home office today, they're not only for the wealthy or for those who work from home. Some have home offices so that there's a place to write out the monthly bills or just have time alone to read a book. Today is #National Organize Your Home Day. So, I want to give you a few tips on how you can quickly organize your home office so that you can revel and enjoy the space. If it's full of clutter, the first thing I want you to do is turn on some music that will pump you up, grab a large trash bag and toss out the following items: Unread Magazines Toss papers that you no longer have a need for Any soda cans or empty snack bags Next step is to clear off your desk, even if it means you need to make piles and put them on the floor until you find a home for them. I want you to be able to work on that desk. Do you have a calendar for 2018? Is it on your desk? If not, where is it? Pull it out and place it on your desk. Have you created a vision board for 2018? If not, start one today. Pull some images out of a magazine that you can relate to. For instance, if you're looking for a new love, pull out some images of a man and woman having fun, looking deeply into each others eyes where you can see they're in love. Or, if you're looking for a new wardrobe, pull out images of the clothes you'd like to wear, etc. Do this for each aspect of your life and be sure it's around where you can look a it every day. Did you buy a calendar for 2018? Have you opened it up yet? Or, is still in the plastic shrink-wrap sitting somewhere in your office? Get it out, add the important dates into it i.e., birthdays, anniversaries etc. Pick up a potted plant at your local supermarket or fresh cut flowers to really make your home office look and smell beautiful. Well, that's all for today. Get moving and get clearing. Happy Organizing!!! With much love, Dawn-Marie XO
Does your home ever feel like a craft store?! This week on the podcast, I talk all about how to get your crafts in order so you can create space and have more time to enjoy doing the things you love. One of the reasons I’ve not tackled the hot mess room on the podcast so far is precisely because it’s a hot mess room and it’s overwhelming! When there’s so much in there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not really know where to begin, especially when you’re listening to my podcast episodes but then can’t physically see the things you should be sorting. Because of this, I’m here to try and teleport myself into your space and give us the chance to tackle this together in the most logical way possible. Start With The End In Mind Imagine for a moment that we could stop time and you could have seven full days to dedicate solely to working on your craft. Obviously, it’s not practical in the real world, but it’s a great starting point to look at all of your crafts and work out exactly what you could and would want to use in that time. This will form the basis for everything we do to organize your crafts. It’s most likely that you’ll have enough crafts to keep you going for seven years rather than seven days. Therefore, it’s going to take you more than seven days just to organize it, let alone start enjoying it! You need to have this reality check. Otherwise, you’re setting up for unrealistic expectations – and we all know I’m the queen of those! My Scrapbook Downsizing I have always loved scrapbooking and making photo albums. As a result, I’ve accumulated LOTS of supplies over many years. I came the realize that I didn’t need all of those supplies anymore. I simply don’t scrapbook as much as I used to. It this week’s podcast episode, I explain how I managed to reduce my craft supplies from taking up two very large closets in the basement to one armoire in the loft. Why am I telling you this? It’s so you can clearly see how I went from having supplies for a full-time business to supplies that will support me making one or two albums a year. Letting Go Of The Stamping & Counted Cross Stitch Similar to my scrapbooking supplies, I used to have A LOT of stamping supplies which I have now condensed to hardly any at all (just a small shoe box versus the whole bookcase that I used to have). My mother is an artist and makes wonderful rubber stamp cards. Because mom did it, I bought hundreds of rubber stamps and ALL the associated supplies. I was decluttering last summer when I realized that I hadn’t stamped in 15 years. I was only keeping them because: I’d spent a lot of money on them The looked super cute They sat on the gorgeous piece of furniture that my late grandfather had made I did two things. First, I chose 20 stamps to keep for future projects and I sent the rest to my mom to use and give to others. Second, I took the stamp holder off the wall and offered it to my sister. She was delighted to accept it as she now got something that grandpa had made and she had a use for it. I did the same with counted cross stitch. I used to LOVE counted cross stitch, but I came to realize that I haven’t done a project in 17 years. I can’t imagine a time when I’m going to do one again any time soon, but I CAN see a time in the distant future when I will pick this hobby back up. So I’ve kept a couple of hoops and all my flosses are in order for when this time comes, but it’s in a small box that’s easy to store. Allow Yourself To Let Go Scrapbooking , stamping, and counted cross stitch are examples of crafts that I used to be really into, but am less so now. Similar to what I did, ask yourself if you’re still really into something and if not, adjust the amount of supplies that you hold onto. As you’re looking at your craft and reliving the memories of the interest in that craft, ask yourself: What is your current need, desire, and excitement for this craft? What is your future need, excitement, and desire for this craft? Only keep the things you really need and give 90% away! It may not be exactly 90%, but I guarantee you it will be around that amount. You do not need to keep a lot. Sometimes an advancement in technology makes your craft redundant. My stamps are a great example of this. They’re wooden, but modern ones are clear and much easier to use. If you want to revisit a hobby later, invest a bit of money in new things. Don’t be held back by the old things that you’re storing. Just because you’ve held onto them doesn’t mean you have to use them forever. Speaking of projects... OH MY GOODNESS! Whether you're keeping your kid's room clean or you have assigned them this very important task, it is essential to keep their room organized. I dive deep into everything kids' clothes on the podcast this week. This is a topic I've mentioned before. In podcast episodes #103 Bedroom Organization For Kids and #104 Clothing Organization For Kids, I discussed how to organize your bedroom and, more specifically, your clothing. It would be a great idea to listen to both of those episodes first since I have taken those principles and built upon them in this episode. I like to view your kid’s rooms as their own mini apartments inside of your house. In this episode, I focused on keeping kid’s clothing organized. This sometimes means sorting through both clean and dirty clothes strewn around their rooms, but there are some ways to help avoid this. Hang everything Getting into the habit of hanging and folding clean clothes right after they leave the laundry room can cut down on the amount of clothes left all over their room. I know for a lot of kids (particularly if they have ADHD) it’s VERY easy to get overwhelmed, especially with how many items can be found in their closet. One organizing method that I have found to be helpful with my kids has been to hang up all of their shirts so that they can see what they have. 2. Put hampers in each child's room. Another helpful practice to follow is designating a location for all the dirty laundry and actually putting it there! Ideally, this would be IN a laundry basket, but just having the dirty clothes all in one place will make a difference. Once the clothes are separated, it’s time to organize them in a way that helps your kids! 3. Next steps... Now obviously, not everyone has the closet space to hang up all of their clothes. So what do you do if your child has a dresser? I have created something that really helps with organizing clothes in drawers! It's a FREE set of printable icons that can be laminated and placed on the drawers of your child’s dresser to help them remember what is inside. There are four different sets of icons designed for young boys and girls, as well as teenage boys and girls. You can mix and match the icons that you like. These kid clothing icons will help your kids identify what is inside of drawers and bins, keeping them more organized. In the podcast, I shared how I put these on a client’s closet drawers using the Command Hook double-sided adhesive strips. Did you know you can buy just the strips?! To download ALL four sets of printable icons, click here. And yes, ladies, you too can use these fun icons! What about hangers? The final tips I talk about in this episode are all about the hangers you use in your kid’s closet. It seems like a small detail, but using hangers that are all the same size and shape can make all the difference right from the start. Once you have those matching hangers, get into the habit of taking out extra hangers and bringing them down to the laundry room for the next batch of clean clothes. When I am organizing, I like to keep one white trash bag hanging in my closet for those hangers I know I am going to throw away. I also keep a black trash bag hanging in my closet for clothes that are going to be donated to Goodwill. Of course, all of these tips for organizing your kid’s clothing can also be applied to your own clothes, too. Happy Organizing! A special thank you to this week’s podcast sponsor, TidyLiving.com!
