Why Does Purging Stuff Feel So GoodThere is something about the word "purge." It is pretty powerful and descriptive, don't you think? I have been purging since before the new year. I can not seem to stop getting rid of stuff. It feels so good. I got to thinking, "Why does purging your stuff feel so good?"In this podcast episode, I share my research on why purging may feel so great.I introduce a book, Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat by Mr Peter Walsh. Published in 2009, the book posits that Clutter can actual make you gain weight. Mr Walsh may be on to something. I also found a great article in Psychology Today titled, "The Powerful Psychology Behind Cleanliness" by Ralph Ryback MD. Dr Ryback explains that yes, clutter can affect your brain and the clearing of clutter can indeed make you happier...I knew it...listen to find out how it works. Finally, I ask organization expert and author, Laurie Palau, author of Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized to explain why we desire to purge and how to get started.Laurie shares the 3 steps to get you started:Start SmallDo your ESP - Empty, Sort, PurgeSort Your Piles - Keep, Donate, Recycle and RelocateYou can find Laurie at her website SimplyBOrganized.I also mention Deb Lillard's book on organizing "Absolutely Organized"Why do you like to purge your stuff? Any good tips?Another treat: In Dr Ryback's Psychology Today article he mentions a website with a bad name but it is so creative and helpful I feel I must mention it here in the show notes. It's called UnF***YourHabitat. There is one game that I am sure that all moms have played. That game is the comparison game. You know when you look at another mom and think that she is better than you because she is skinner than you and makes perfect Pinterest-worthy lunches every day for her kids. Or maybe it is subtle, like when you're at work and think that Becky's house must be so much cleaner than yours because her desk is always organized. Those comparison thoughts mess with us all.So what do you do when you are comparing and feel like you don't measure up?First, listen to this episode with my guest Laurie from This ORGANIZED Life. She shares:Her experience with why moms compare themselves and begin to feel like they don't measure upPractical tips to help get unstuck when you feel like you don't measure upUnderlying issues that we may have when we feel like we don't measure up.Are you ready to change the narrative and start feeling empowered? Kimberly is my partner promoter, social media and YouTube manager, not to mention mom of 3 girls, and a fellow Enneagram 8. During our conversation, we each share our tips on keeping the fridge from becoming a food graveyard. We are always looking for ways to improve our show. Before we get into today's episode, will you please take a moment to fill out our short listener survey ? One of the many comments I hear as a professional organizer is “I wish I could afford to hire someone like you!” The truth of the matter is that getting organized does require time and a level of intentionality, but it doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Dave Ramsey says “where a person spends money is a reflection of their priorities,” and I have seen that play out in my own life. If someone handed me $500 I would rather go out to a nice dinner with friends, or put it towards a home improvement project. Whereas someone else might want to go on a shopping spree or put it towards a vacation. There's no right or wrong answer, it's simply a matter of priorities. Even if no one is handing you a stack of Benjamins, if you want to get organized, I assure you that you can do it on a shoestring budget. The greatest organizing tools I have to offer you are vision, strategy and a plan of action. Today I am going to walk you through my exact process that I do with my clients. It's completely free, the only investment is your time. You can always add the fancy bins later if you so choose. Before you begin, I want you to ask yourself 2 very important questions: “Do I want less stuff or do I just want to know where my stuff is?” “What's more important to me, stuff or space?” When we look at IG or Pinterest, there's one common theme-LESS. Lots of white space, in between shelves, hanging rods, under cabinets. Which leads me to point #2- I recommend using social media for inspiration, but be mindful of trying to keep up with the Jones. You can accomplish much of what you see online with stuff you have in your home, or inexpensively-you don't have to have a custom closet and bins from the Container Store to have an organized space. Before you dig in, come prepared with the essentials: Bins to sort Bags to donate Post-its or label roll to temporarily label categories Music/podcast to keep you motivated Pick one space to declutter and set a limit on how long you are committing to stay there (ie: until this space is done, for 20 min, 2 hours…) The time doesn't matter as much as following through on your commitment. 5. Here's where my 4 pile method comes into play. As you are emptying the contents, sort the items into these piles: KEEP (in that space only) DONATE RECYCLE RELOCATE (anything you want to keep, but doesn't live in the space you are organizing. This can mean it's going to a different room, or going into memorabilia, or getting returned to someone.) 6. Once you're done, now it's time to ZONE, Corral, Contain. This is where you can get creative, and figure out what products will make you feel good about your space--remember, an organized space needs to accomplish 2 things: HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL HOW QUICKLY CAN I FIND WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR? Regardless of where you are in your life with age or financially, you are capable and deserving of living an organized life. I'm here for you every step of the way! Hi Friends, Before we get into today's episode, will you please take a moment to fill out our short listener survey? Today I am joined by Amanda Cunningham, founder of The Glory Days Co., a company that provides organizational tools for parents and caregivers of special needs children. Amanda shares her story of giving birth to her beautiful daughter Aurora “Rory” and finding out upon her arrival that she had Down Syndrome. She walks us through the early months following Rory's birth and speaks candidly about how she struggled with feelings of overwhelm. From attending weekly doctors and therapy appointments, to wading through the unexpected newness of becoming a stay-at-home mom. When looking for tools to support her in this new role as a special needs parent, she couldn't find anything that encompassed everything Rory needed. So Amanda created her own planner filled with checklists, calendar, daily tasks and a robust notes section to document the countless appointments and therapies required to help Rory thrive, and now helps parents everywhere do the same. During our conversation we talk about: Her unexpected transition to stay-at-home caregiver from working professional The role that both physical and calendar organizers play in raising a child with special needs The importance of routines to help everyone to flourish October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, I encourage you to check out The Glory Days Co-for free downloads, articles and some amazing products. Hi Friends! Whether you are heading back into the office or on day 7,693,421 of working from home-finding motivation can be a struggle. Studies show that when we lack motivation, our productivity decreases. So the question becomes: “how do we find motivation?” To answer that question, I invited Grace Treutel to share some insight with us. Grace is the Manager of Culture at a rapidly growing eCommerce startup where she helps colleagues get more organized within their workflows and navigate company culture, which results in a healthier work environment. She is also the host and producer of The Standard Office Procedures, a podcast that aims to help professionals grow and prosper through culture, communication, and candor. On the personal side, Grace is a mom to two littles, so she knows what it's like to have your motivation sucked out of you on a daily basis-jk! During our conversation, Grace walks us through some everyday struggles and shares some tactical steps that you can use in the office, at home, or in an academic setting (hello students!) I loved the part of our conversation when Grace talks about how we can show up for our coworkers or colleagues rather than waiting for them to ask for help (which is often hard to do). Hi Friends! When I was in my early 20's I had a subscription to Martha Stewart Living. Each month when it arrived in the mail I would open it up and immediately flip to the monthly calendar of things to do. From changing out air filters, to checking your smoke detectors, I loved the actionable checklist she provided. Although I may not have been planting bulbs in my garden or harvesting berries to make homemade jam, I was all over the tasks that helped me to stay organized. There's no question that September is a busy month for all of us, and if we are not intentional, some important areas can easily fall through the cracks, leaving us unprepared when it really matters. On today's podcast episode of This ORGANIZED Life I share my Fall Organizing Checklist which is a simple list of 10 specific tips to help you prepare for the home stretch of 2021. If you listened to my prior episode with Courtney Carver of Be More with Less, you know that I'm an aspiring minimalist. A minimalist is a person that thinks about what they bring into work and life. Instead of having or doing all the things, they purposely remove things that no longer serve them. You might be wondering, how does this impact my work? As it turns out, I think it impacts our work a lot. Whether you have a cluttered desk with paper or a messy email inbox (guilty as charged over here), it can affect your productivity, your mindset, and your career success. So, I had to have Laurie Palau on our show! Laurie is the founder of Simply B Organized (SBO) where she writes, teaches, and works with people of all ages helping them to declutter and work smarter. She also hosts This ORGANIZED Life, a weekly podcast where Laurie chats with awesome guests about life, work, parenting, and the role that organization has in their lives. During this show, Laurie and I talked about: - the different types of clutter - how clutter has a direct impact on your work - different tips to tackle clutter at work and at home - what the Enneagram is and how it relates to clutter Resources: Brave Women at Work: https://www.bravewomenatwork.com/ 10 Steps to Being Brave at Work: https://www.bravewomenatwork.com/freebie Join the free, private Brave Women at Work Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/bravewomenatwork Simply B Organized: https://simplyborganized.com/ ESP Method: https://simplyborganized.com/2014/05/19/do-you-have-esp/ Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized: https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Mess-Practical-Getting-Organized/dp/0692921621 Enneagram and Clutter Course: https://simplyborganized.com/enneagram-clutter-course/

Hi Friends! We are wrapping up our Clutter Clinic Series with one of life's biggest pain points…Paper Clutter. “What if I need this someday?” “How long do I need to keep this?” “I am struggling to pay my bills so I avoid opening the mail” There is no denying that paper clutter is riddled with emotion. Whether you're dealing with mail, school papers, work documents or never-ending subscriptions, it's easy to find yourself feeling like you're drinking from a firehose. Not to worry, we're going to walk with you every step of the way. During this episode we walk through each of the clutter pitfalls and the role that each plays when it comes to paper clutter. From the tactical side, below are 3 simple and practical tips that you can start doing today. Each of these will help you reduce the volume coming in and feel confident about knowing what to throw out. 1. Go Electronic for Statements. One of the easiest ways to cut down on paper clutter is to get your recurring monthly statements sent to you electronically. One of the common objections I hear from folks is that they use the paper statements to act as a reminder to pay their bills. Here's an easy fix: set up recurring payments on your banking app or website. It's a secure login and will save you hours of time, and potential late fees. The best part is that you will drastically reduce the amount of paper clutter in your home 2. Edit Subscriptions You know that magazine you always say you're going to read but never do? No judgement, we've all been there. By cancelling any subscriptions that you are not reading you'll save space and money that could be serving you better. Still on the fence: Transfer your subscriptions to a digital version, and give yourself 6 months. If you still find that you're not reading them, it's time to put some money back in your pocket and cancel them. 3. Get into a Routine Step 1: Open the Mail. Opening the mail should be a daily occurrence, like making your bed and brushing your teeth. Step 2: Recycle Immediate. As soon as you get the mail, leaf through it and throw any junk mail, solicitation, etc directly into the recycling bin. If you can avoid bringing it in the house all together, even better! Step 3: Action or Reference? Whatever doesn't get recycled goes into 1 of 2 categories: Action: To do (random bills, RSVPs, permission slips) Reference: To file (declarations pages of your insurance, tax returns, etc) What to Shred: Can I get this ______ electronically if I need it? Can I find the answer online if I have a question? If the answer is yes, then chances are it's ok to shred! *You can always consult your tax advisor if you have any questions. Final thoughts: Set parameters of when you are going to pay bills and file (weekly, monthly, when your reference bin fills up). Be consistent, it's the key to sustainability and building muscle memory Start where you are. Today is a great day to reframe new habits. Hi Friends! It's week 3 of our Clutter Clinic Series! So far this month we've talked about decluttering and organizing garages, closets, and today we are talking about toys and kid spaces (the bane of every parent's existence!) . Whether you live in a house with a dedicated playroom, an apartment where space is limited, or fall somewhere in between-all parents have struggled at some point on how to keep toys and kid spaces organized. In this episode we get right down to it: When & how do you get the kids involved? What to do with toys you want to save for the next kid? How to make clean up easy and how often should we be purging old toys? I've also included a link to my popular 30 Day Kids Organizing Checklist which you can download here! Purging Tips Lead with service Make purging a tradition (birthdays, Christmas/Hanukkah) Teach them young (avoid dark of night purging) Space to Inventory ratio (don't have more than you can store) Use ESP (our EMPTY, SORT, PURGE method) Organizing Tips Clean up every day (avoid the pile up) Use cubbies (simple, cheap and easy!) Think multipurpose furniture (ie:tables with storage) Easy to reach bookcases Use underbed storage Use pictures/colors (kids can understand pictures before they can read words) Build in margin for kids (make clean up part of playtime) Be Specific (ie: put the legos back in the bin, rather than clean up the basement) There's also an entire chapter in my book, HOT MESS: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized that is dedicated to kids' spaces that includes a chart with age appropriate responsibilities. The good news is that you don't have to be a minimalist to have an organized kid space, and it's never too early or too late to start putting these strategies into place. Hi friends! We are kicking off a new series this month called “Behind the Scenes” where each week we are going to peel back the curtain and talk about what goes into the different aspects of Simply B Organized. Today I am joined by one of my longtime friends and SBO team members Courtney Greisman. Courtney joined the SBO team back in 2013 and has held the title of social media manager to partner promoter (my personal favorite!) She helps me run our SBO community -which is our network of Professional Organizers from different cities around the world. Our partner program has 2 distinct purposes: It allows me to offer trusted, SBO endorsed referrals to you or your loved ones-regardless of where you live. It gives me the opportunity to support other professional organizers grow their businesses. From group and individual mentorship, to brand exposure, and a complete resource library dedicated to helping remove the guesswork on running a business. Since its inception in 2017, the SBO Partner Program has taken a primary focus within the umbrella of our service offerings. I am equally passionate about helping professional organizers with the business side of the business, as I am about organizing a pantry! Running different divisions within a company requires a lot of time and attention, and I cannot do it alone. Courtney has been an integral part of the SBO Partner Program from the start, which is why I invited her to share the inside scoop with all of you. During our conversation we talk about: The detailed process that goes into how we source potential partners How the program has grown and evolved over the past few years What she’s learned from watching and working with each one of our partners If you are a Professional Organizer (or thinking about becoming one) and looking to learn more about the SBO Partner Program, we’d love to hear from you. Laurie Palau knows a few things about clutter. The Owner of Simply B Organized, podcast host of This Organized Life and Author of Hot Mess: A Practical Guide for Getting Organized shares her theory on clutter - "Clutter isn't limited to what you see on the outside it's about how it makes you feel on the inside." Laurie shares her theory on types of clutter and what they mean: physical clutter, emotional clutter, and calendar clutter. She explains that once you can identify the type of clutter you can start to eliminate it from your life.Kids have issues with clutter, too, and their handling (or lack of handing it) can cause family rift and stress. We talk about what can cause kid clutter and tips on how to solve it. Laurie shares her experience with her own children and we discuss a special episode from her podcast, This Organized Life, where her daughter is the guest (episode 138). Their story might ring a bell or two in your life with your children or grandchildren.Laurie Palau's book: Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting OrganizedLaurie's podcast: This Organized LifeLaurie's website: SimplyBOrganizedClaudine Wolk Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/claudinewolk/Claudine Wolk Blog - https://www.claudinewolk.com/blogThis episode of Stories and Strategies for Women is brought to you by Eyebobs. Hi Friends! I am really excited for this episode because it’s about financial wellness for our kids. Joining me today is Benny Nachman- founder of Jassby, a free iOS app that allows parents to share money with their kids while teaching them about financial literacy. Think of it as a chores and allowance app. So much of what we talk about on this show has to do with ownership, responsibility and discipline. So when I learned about Jassby, I knew that I wanted to have their founder on to tell us the backstory behind the app. During our conversation we talk about: How using digital tools resonates with kids and teens as a teaching tool for money Their 3 money principles (save, do-good, spend) Teaching age appropriate money knowledge Benny walks us through how, when and where to use Jassby. As a parent, I always say the best thing we can do is to teach our kids life skills– like organizing, cooking, cleaning and financial responsibility. The method we convey information changes from generation to generation even if the message stays the same. To reference any of the things we talked about during the show, check out the links below. Have you ever considered the link between personality and clutter? In my new Enneagram & Clutter Course I take a closer look at what motivates some people to avoid clutter like the plague, and others to ignore it as though they are “clutter-blind.” To learn more, please visit: https://simplyborganized.com/enneagram-clutter-course/ Enter promo code TOL30 at checkout to receive 30% off the course price. Hi FriendsI hope you are enjoying our series on Clutter & The Ennenagram. If you are just joining us, I encourage you to go back and listen to the other guests in this series, including author of the best selling book: The Road Back to You, Ian Morgan Cron. Today sit down with Enneagram 5, Elizabeth Evans. I don’t have a lot of 5’s in my life, but as an Enneagram 8, I do share a line with them, so I was excited to chat with Elizabeth about life through her lens. Elizabeth is an entrepreneur and founder of Elizabeth Evans Marketing Studio-where she helps people amplify their story through the world of podcasting (my fav!) Her background is as a business analyst (which seems very much in line with Enneagram 5). I invited Elizabeth on my show to share her story and talk about how organization and clutter fits into her world. During our conversation we discuss: ● The superpowers of fives ● The difference between strategy and discipline ● Growth opportunities for fives ● How being thinking dominant and doing repressed can impact productivity ● The role of mental clutter in her world ● How her analytical skills contribute to her success in life and business. Whether you identify as an Enneagram 5 or love someone who is a five, this episode is filled with great information! Check out the links below to connect with Elizabeth. xo - Laurie P.S. Hi friends! Today we are kicking off what I suspect is going to be one of my favorite series to date-Clutter & The Enneagram. If you have been around me for more than a hot second, you will know that I have a slight obsession with the Enneagram (at least according to my family). If you’re new to the Enneagram, it’s a personality typology with nine distinct types. What makes the Enneagram different from other personality assessments is that your Enneagram type is determined by your core motivation, rather than strictly on behavior. Basically the WHY we do what we do. Another difference from other assessments, is that the Enneagram looks at BOTH strengths and blindspots providing opportunities for personal growth in a host of areas. I’ve spent the past few years studying the many layers of the Enneagram, looking at clutter patterns and connecting the dots between peoples relationship with clutter and their Enneagram type. This series looks at 9 people each with different enneagram numbers. We talk about what makes their enneagram type unique, how they learned about the enneagram, and their personal relationship with clutter and organization as it relates to the Enneagram. To kick off this series, I am joined by Enneagram 1 (also known as the Perfectionist), Maliquea Starnes. During our conversation we talked about: ⦁ The Inner Critic of Ones⦁ The role of Emotional Clutter in her life⦁ Why clutter and organization can be both a struggle and strength for Type Ones Maliquea shares her words of wisdom for our fellow Enneagram Ones (or people who are married to, or parent Ones) to better understand them. After listening, I’d love to hear your thoughts in our facebook group, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast. Make sure to tune in next week to hear my conversation with Enneagram 2, Ashton Whitmoyer-Ober. Raise your hand if you've ever felt like a hot mess. Okay, we're not going to out you like that. But just know, we've all been there. It can be hard to get organized - and stay organized! Luckily, there's help available to you... starting with this here podcast! We spoke with organization expert Laurie Palau of Simply B Organized about how to overcome those roadblocks to keeping tidy. Laurie has always been an organized woman, and it naturally led to a career where she can help others. But not all clients are the same: We all have different types of clutter and reasons for the never-ending messes. To get to the root cause, Laurie looks at clients through an Enneagram perspective. Similar to the personality-revealing powers of the Meyers-Briggs test or even astrology, the Enneagram can be helpful in understanding what's motivating us or holding us back. Growing from this, we can see people as having three main types of clutter: physical, emotional, or calendar. You may even have some combination thereof. Take the clutter quiz here to find out what type of mess stress you're facing! Laurie uses this information to come up with an organization plan that will work best for you and address your particular hang-ups. She also works with people who face clutter issues due to an event - anything from throwing a party to overcoming the loss of a loved one. Our interview ends with a few more special tips Laurie has about keeping things clean. Time limits and turning cleaning into a fun experience are just some of her tricks. Be sure to listen to the full podcast above. It's full of insight and a few laughs, and you'll be inspired to finally tackle those messes and get organized! Learn more about Laurie Palau at her website, Simply B Organized. She's also the host of the terrific podcast, This Organized Life, and has a book called Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized. On today’s episode we look back over the past 4 years and talk about how the show has evolved, some of my favorite guests, and what I envision for the future of This ORGANIZED Life and Simply B Organized. We also talk about how the professional organizing industry has changed since I started in 2009, what I think about the new Netflix show GET ORGANIZED with The HOME EDIT, and the impact that COVID has had on our family and on my business. And of course, we wrap up the show by Josh asking me, the two signature TOL questions: Where do I feel the most organized? And where do I feel like the biggest hot mess? Thanks to my team for their hard work and dedication, and thanks to YOU for helping our show to grow each week. 200 episodes would not be possible without your support. I am humbled and grateful that you choose to spend time with me each week. Cheers to the next 200 episodes! xo - Laurie P.S. Next week we kick off a new series on Clutter & The Enneagram! It was a fun conversation that I hope gets you thinking about different ways to extend hospitality during these crazy times! Hi Friends! Today we are wrapping up our series on Men Making a Difference. If you haven’t listened to our other guests, I highly recommend going back and binging the last 3 episodes-they won’t disappoint! Joining me today is advocate, author and TedX speaker, Josh Levs. Josh is a former CNN and NPR journalist, and the leading global expert on modern fathers in the workplace. He stepped into a global spotlight by taking legal action against Time Warner (CNN’s parent company) for fair parental leave so he could care for his preemie daughter and sick wife. The company ultimately embraced his call, revolutionizing its policy to make it better for moms and dads. He is the author of the award-winning book All In: How Our Work-First Culture Fails Dads, Families, and Businesses–And How We Can Fix It Together. After the release of his book, Levs became the leading voice for modern dads at work, shining a light on their unknown struggles. I invited Josh on the show today to share his story, dispel some of the myths that give dads a bad rap, and shed some light on how we can work together with our spouses, employers and co-workers. During our conversation we talk about stereotypes like: ● Moms do more work around the house than Dads ● Moms carry more mental load than Dads ● Dads having more leisure time ● Dads get to do the fun stuff, while Mom’s do more household chores He offers strategies to improve work-life balance for BOTH women and men, and we discuss the impact that COVID-19 has had on family dynamics. It’s a meaningful, thought provoking conversation that I hope opens the door for conversations, between couples everywhere. Make sure to check out the links below for Josh’s Ted Talk, Book and More! Hi Friends! You guys know how passionate I am about funding research for pediatric cancer and the work I do with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, right? Well, you are in for a treat with this conversation! As we continue with our series on Men Making a Difference, I am happy to share today’s guest with you–my new friend Matt Coulter. Matt is the president of the BeYOUtiful Foundation, a (501c3) non profit organization dedicated to helping women of all ages who are dealing with the harsh realities of cancer. Their mission is simple: To provide hope, love and a path to feeling beYOUtiful for girls and women of all ages. By connecting salons & stylists to local survivors, and providing online education (on everything from cutting, styling, utilizing wigs & dealing with chemo hair), they are here from diagnosis to remission and beyond. It was such a treat to sit down with Matt and talk about our shared passion of making a difference in the world of families battling cancer. Since September is Pediatric Cancer awareness month, and October is Breast Cancer awareness month, I could not think of a more appropriate time to shine a spotlight on the incredible philanthropic work Matt and his team are doing. On this episode we talk about: ● How he got started in the non-profit space ● The power of using your spheres of influence to inspire others ● Walking with families who are battling the unthinkable It’s a powerful, inspiring and important conversation that I hope leaves you realizing that there’s more to living an ORGANIZED life than just stuff. Hi Friends! At the time of this recording, COVID and Quarantine barely on our radar. In fact, my original focus for this interview was supposed to be about “take your kid to work” for the homeschooling mom. Who knew the foreshadowing that was about to happen. My guest today is Kristi Clover is a home organization and #momlife expert. Kristi is the author of M.O.M.=Master Organizer of Mayhem and Homeschool Basics, and host of the Simply Joyful Podcast and YouTube Channel. Her passion is to encourage families to find simple ways to bring more joy into their home and life. She loves to share about her adventures in motherhood and home life through a variety of media that you can find at KristiClover.com. Kristi lives in San Diego with her husband, Steve, and their five children. As a homeschooling mom we talked about how she separates home-life from school-life, and what organization looks like under her roof. If I had any idea of what was about to happen with public school, I would have had a thousand more questions for Kristi! From tips to keep kids motivated and engaged, to asking her advice for parents who may not feel adequately prepared to homeschool their kids. As we embark on a return to school, we’re all in different places logistically and mentally, but collectively we can listen & learn together. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Kristi! Hi Friends! Joining me today is my friend, Karen Cahn. If there is one word I would use to describe Karen, it would be “powerhouse.” Karen is the Founder & CEO of IFundWomen, the go-to funding marketplace for women-owned businesses and all the people who want to support them, from individuals to enterprises. IFundWomen provides online fundraising services, expert business coaching, and a powerful network of women business owners. Karen spends her day advocating for women-owned businesses (can I get an amen!)-she is a voice for the marginalized, and a trailblazer in the pursuit of equality for all women. She is also a mom to 2 kids and is struggling like the rest of us navigating life during COVID-19 and doing the best we can. During our conversation we talked about life under quarantine (yes, when we recorded we were still in lockdown). ● How she has had to pivot her own business and routine without warning ● The challenges of separating work and home when you are literally doing both under the same roof ● Where she struggles with organization in her own home. We also talked about the entrepreneurial landscape, the role of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and why we are craving comfort in a world filled with uncertainty. Karen and I had an on-air mini coaching session about her struggles with opening the mail on a daily basis, which goes to show that everyone has areas in their lives where they feel like a bit of a Hot Mess. It was a real, honest and fun conversation, and I hope you enjoy it enough to leave us a review and share with your people! XOXO- Laurie P.S. Hi Friends! Joining me today is Swarna Anthan. Swarna is a mom to a 6 year old son, and founder and CEO of MagicPolygon-a storytelling platform available in the AppStore. Like so many start-ups, Swarna created this app when she realized that her son preferred STORYTELLING to STORY READING. Recognizing a gap in the marketplace, she set off to create a storytelling platform for kids where grandparents, friends and families living far away can tell stories in their own voice using the interactive picture books available in the app. Prior to starting MagicPolygon, Swarna worked for Motorola, iHeart Radio, Samsung, & NYTimes. As one of the first Engineers of the tech fitness company Peloton, Swarna left Peloton 3 years ago to start MagicPolygon. During this time of quarantine, social distancing, and e-learning, who could have imagined the importance of personalized content and connection derived from digital platforms. MagicPolygon App is also being used in classrooms as a way to bridge creativity, connection and collaboration among students and teachers. During our conversation we talk about: ● Her decision to leave a successful, secure career to embark on a start-up journey ● How educators and parents are using the app to connect with loved ones beyond platforms such as zoom, facetime and skype ● Why kids ages 3-7 are her core demographic Swarna also opens up about her own struggles juggling life as a mom and entrepreneur managing a full-time career. Hi Friends! Today I am joined by Michaela Foster Marsh. Michaela is an acclaimed musician with three albums to her credit. Her work has appeared in television and film, including Dawson’s Creek, Breaking Amish and The Matthew Sheppard Story. She has been invited to sing at the Monaco International Film Festival, the Cannes International Film Festival, and for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. Most notable, Michaela is known for her philanthropic work in Uganda. Michaela is the founder and Executive Director of Starchild Charity, which works to support vulnerable children and women by providing education and support; and did I mention that her foundation is responsible for building a School for Creative Arts in Uganda?! I invited Michaela onto TOL to share her story of growing up white with an adopted black brother only weeks apart, and being raised as twins in the late 60’s. We talk about their life together as kids in Scotland, and how her brother’s tragic death in a house fire led her on a quest to find his birth family in Uganda. She shares the impact that first visit to Uganda had on her life; how it led her to write a book, start a charity, and build a school that now serves hundreds of kids and families in Uganda. She shares about what she calls “The Magic in the Universe,” and how her perspective on life, material possessions, and success has evolved and changed over time. Our conversation is filled with joy, loss, and inspiration. I invite you to share this episode with your people, and if you feel so inclined, leave us a comment or review. Today we are joined by Chanelle Neilson, host and creator of the Moms Who Know Podcast, author of Parenting with Purpose, who’s married to her best friend and mom of 5 adorable kiddos! She loves helping moms take care of themselves and grow so they can take better care of their families. I invited Chanelle to chat with us about what being organized with a big family looks like, her mission for other moms, and how she still manages to carve out guilt free time for herself–an area where many of us struggle. Chanelle talks about her breaking point, and how she learned to absolve herself of the “supermom complex.” Chanelle gives us a front row seat into what life looks like in the following areas: Meal Prep Laundry Household Chores Chauffeuring Kids to Activities Homework Morning/Bedtime Routines Self-Care We talk about the importance of establishing boundaries, and setting up routines, not just for the kids, but for herself too! Hi Friends! Today we are joined by Robbin McManne, author, podcaster, speaker and certified parent coach. Robbin’s work focuses on building and strengthening the parent child relationship so that children grow up with resilience, confidence and strong emotional intelligence. She works with parents to help them understand their own emotions and frustrations in parenting, so they can help build their children’s sense of self without losing themselves in the process! In October of 2018 Robbin released her first book, “The Yelling Cure – How stress less and get your kids to cooperate without threats & punishments.” Her book is being read by parents all over the world 100,000 copies sold to date. During the time of our conversation we were knee-deep in quarantine, so anxiety for kids and parents were at an all-time high. We talked about things like: The important role of routines Advice for the parent who says “the only way my kids listen is when I yell” How to meet your kids where they are Robbin shared so many great nuggets of wisdom, I hope you find value in the resources below! xo- Laurie A special thanks to our good friends at BeWELL Psychotherapy for sponsoring this episode of This ORGANIZED Life! Clutter takes up space. Whether it is physical, emotional, or mental, clutter takes away the time and place that we would rather have to be more productive. Laurie Palau, the author of the book, Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized, sets us up for a more organized life as she motivates us to become more organized through her advice and tips. As a mother herself raising teenagers who also juggles being the host of the weekly podcast, This Organized Life, and the Founder of Simply B Organized, Laurie is very familiar with the struggles women have of trying to integrate multiple roles in their lives. She shares her own way of achieving work-life integration and keeping her time organized in the midst of it all. On the parenting side, Laurie lets us in on how she makes her kids stay organized – from parental controls to keeping their stuff. — Listen to the podcast here: A Mom's Practical Guide To Getting Organized with Laurie Palau I am going to be bringing you a very special guest, my organizing friend, Laurie Palau. She is going to come on and we're going to talk about everything from organization to raising teenagers. Welcome to the show, Laurie. Thank you so much for having me. Laurie is the author of the book, Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized. She also is the host of the weekly podcast called This Organized Life. She's the Founder of Simply B Organized where she speaks, teaches, and works one-on-one with clients to help them reduce clutter and increased productivity. Laurie's advice has been featured in the New York Times Parenting Section, Family Circle, Home & Table Magazine. She can also be seen sharing tips on 6ABC and WFMZ in addition to other radio and podcast interviews. When she's not organizing the world, Laurie can be found at home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her husband, Josh, same as mine, two girls, two dogs. She loves coffee and Tito's Vodka. In her spare time, she is actively involved in St. Baldrick's Foundation, which raises funding for pediatric cancer research. We already knew that we had a lot in common, Laurie. I did not know that you have a husband named Josh like me and loved Tito's like me. Those are two things we did not discuss. I don't know which was the bigger shame. I think it's probably the Tito's. We met through another organizer, Jen Kilbourne I think the first time we talked on the phone and it's just one of those things when you meet somebody and you're like, “Where have you been my whole life?” I want to talk about your book. I want to talk about organizing. I love having other organizers on the show because although we are very similar, hopefully there's another spin on something that the audience can know from you. I think you've been doing organizing for several years. As my day job, I'd be doing it for several years but like so many other people, it's something that you've been doing for a lot longer. I've had Simply B Organized. I started the end of 2008 and made it official. In 2009, a totally different landscape of the industry but I love it. Love the show? This week we have our first international guest, Laurie Palau! She is our great friend and fellow Professional Organizer from the USA (yes we are using Z where we normally use S's today in homage to our guest today ;-)) Laurie is the author of the book HOT MESS: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized, host of the weekly podcast, This ORGANIZED Life, and the founder of simply B organized where she speaks, teaches and works one-on-one with clients to help them reduce clutter and increase productivity. We chat about the three categories she sees as causing clutter in our lives, her partner program and what she struggles within her home. We love that Laurie has the same philosophy as us that we want people to live in organised homes so that they can have the freedom to do the things they love to do and that brings them life. We absolutely adored having Laurie with us and as always we hope you have a giggle with us and enjoy the conversation! The many things that were mentioned in this episode:Here is Laurie's quiz to figure out what area of clutter is your biggest nemesis: https://simplyborganized.lpages.co/clutter-quiz/Here is where you will find our Partner's around the world: https://www.simplyborganized.com/find-a-partner/Laurie's episode where she interviewed us : https://www.simplyborganized.com/2019/01/03/ep-108-2019-goal-setting-with-special-guests-kirsty-farrugia-amy-revell/Laurie's article about being the CEO of your home: https://www.simplyborganized.com/2016/12/17/home-organizing-expert/Laurie's podcast about being the CEO of your home: https://www.simplyborganized.com/2017/02/01/podcast-ep007-are-you-the-ceo-of-your-home/Thank you to our new Patreon supporters, Amy K & Jen!Join our community Become a Patron – your monthly donation makes a huge difference to me being able to produce this podcast.
