This week on Mea Culpa, Michael finds himself at peak frustration as the Trump Train barrels this country towards oblivion. How can a nation that is built upon reason find itself in such an unreasonable position, where a two-bit, wannabe despot can work the corners of our legal system to halt the entire transition of power? With the country exhausted from the trauma of this never ending election and the looming specter of death from COVID, we all are stuck in a terrible limbo. Searching for answers and rational thought, Michael speaks with Harvard University Professor of Constitutional Law, Laurence Tribe. 313: Ellie's Dad - life lessons, a quiz, and some "jokes" What are the lyrics to Happy Birthday? What is the correct term for male swimwear? Who is Jennifer Lopez? Ellie's Dad knows the answer to none of these questions, and we are here to mock him for it. Yes, it's a Father's Day Special as Jim returns to the podcast. We discuss Crystal Palace's FA cup win, aka the best day of his life. He shares the number one nugget of wisdom he's learned after 78 years on the planet, and Ellie comes up with a new plan to monetise him in his old age. There are some quiz questions, and Confessions involving a Turkish airport, two clothes steamers, and the Virgin Mary. Listen right to the end for a classic Dad joke. Trigger warning: this episode includes several instances of Jim singing, plus an impression of Joe McElderry by Ellie. If you have been affected by any of the singing on this podcast, we can only apologise. Ellie's Dad isn't on social media. But you can follow him around at our gigs. WE ARE ON OUR! To hear more, visit meetthemess.substack.comMove over, Meet the Press—it's time to MEET THE MESS!Before we begin, a quick PSA: Instead of watching the awkward cosplay military parade for someone's birthday this Saturday, June 14th, join a No Kings protest near you! They're happening all across the country, and unlike that parade, they're actually American. Find your local protest at NoKings.org and honor our Founding Fathers by being mildly disruptive. And now, this week on the podcast (Part 1 of 2):Los Angeles ICE protests heat up as Trump escalates tensions and Gavin Newsom claps back like a total badass.
Our guest for this episode is the awesome Daisy-May Hudson. She tells us about her experience of homelessness, and her journey from documentary maker to film director. We discuss Daisy-May's latest movie, Lollipop, which tells the story of a woman fighting to get her children back, and a friendship that's rekindled along the way. It's out on the 13 June and it's absolutely brilliant. There's also some chat about Daisy-May's documentaries - Halfway, which she made when her family was made homeless, and Holloway, about former inmates of the infamous women's prison. Holloway is out on 20 June. Of course, we finish off with some Scummy Mummy Confessions. Daisy-May tries to reframe Helen's tale of pissing herself as a celebration of freedom, and Ellie nearly pisses herself laughing. Follow Daisy-May on instagram @daisymay_hudson. In the shadow of worries about the NDIS, do we even believe that big system reform in Australia is do-able any more? Is the juice worth the squeeze? In this first of a two part series, we explore the example of Universal Credit, a 15 year long reform agenda in the UK to combine 6 benefits into one, and, more importantly, seeking to transform the relationship of the citizen to work and welfare. In this episode we unpick how it goes from an idea that is incorporated into the UK Coalition Government's priority list in 2010 to a £450m hot mess in 2013.We also look at the unusual (and brave) decision to keep going.Along the way, we cover:Whether radical transparency can be an answer to rescuing something when you're in the middle of a hot mess?Whether we underestimate the importance of a 'holder of the vision' in giant systems reform? Whether articulating a north star for reform is hard because it makes clear what you are prioritising, and, equally importantly, what you're not?The laughable idea of low hanging fruitReferenced in the episode:Ed Milliband's interview referencing PM Gordon Brown as an ideas factory, on Leading (The Rest is Politics)David Freud's masterful memoir on his seminal role in Universal Credit, Clashing AgendasInstitute for Government has held a number of great events on this, including one in 2016 and another in 2025Abul Rizvi's appearance on Joe Walker podcast on the origins of Australia's immigration systemIntro grab is Lord David Freud from Institute for Government 2016 event, From disaster to recovery: Learning the lessons of Universal Credit Clashing Agendas.Outro grab is Tom Loosemore, former Deputy Director, Government Digital Services, from Institute for Government 2025 event, From disaster to completion? What Government can learn from the Universal Credit story? Now for some appropriately bureaucratic disclaimers....While we have tried to be as thorough in our research as busy full time jobs and lives allow, we definitely don't guarantee that we've got all the details right. If you want rigorous reporting on Robodebt, we recommend the work of Rick Morton at the Saturday Paper, Chris Knaus and Luke Henriques-Gomes at the Guardian, Ben Eltham at Crikey, Julian Bajkowski at The Mandarin, and of course, the Robodebt Royal Commission itself. Please feel free to email us corrections, episode suggestions, or anything else, at thewestminstertraditionpod@gmail.com.Thanks to PanPot audio for our intro and outro music. 'Til next time!

We had some serious issues with the audio file in garage band which somehow got corrupted and we tried our hardest to save it but it didn't work. So we tried to enhance the audio that was recorded from the iPhone- and while it isn't perfect at least we were able to somewhat salvage this weeks episode! In this week's episode we kick off discussing an update on South Korea's president who was recently impeached and under investigation- it is now official that he will be removed from the presidency and will no longer be running the South Korean government. The stock market takes a major dip as continued uncertainty looms with Trump's presidency. Lastly- we discuss our latest trash TV guilty pleasure- Temptation Island (spoiler alert!). We deep dive into all four couples and give our hot take. Hope you guys all enjoy this weeks episode and apologies for the audio quality- next week's will be much better.
In today's episode, Colleen shares a personal reflection she recorded nearly a year ago—but it's just as relevant now, especially if you're feeling stuck, off-balance, or like a hot mess who should be further along by now. This episode isn't about getting it all together—it's about what to do when you don't. You'll hear how she used the exact tools from the program to navigate the emotional chaos of working too much, losing old routines post-divorce, and telling herself the story that she wasn't making any progress. You'll learn how to decode those familiar thoughts, and shift out of judgment into grounded, aligned action. Because stuck is a story. Balance is a feeling. And sometimes the most powerful way to move forward… IS TO STOP TRYING SO HARD! Key Takeaways: These are just thoughts—not facts. They're how we explain our emotional state, not what's actually happening. “I'm stuck,” “I'm out of balance” “I'm not making progress” The real issue isn't imbalance. It's overwhelm. When your output is high but your results are low, you're probably ignoring your body's signals. Emotional sobriety means listening to those signals instead of overriding them. Remember this: Your brain will find evidence for whatever you believe. So if you keep saying “I'm not making progress,” you'll feel more discouraged and stuck. Flip the script by doing one small thing—and call it progress.
