I spoke to Kara Eastman the day after she won her primary against Blue Dog Democrat Brad Ashford in Nebraska's congressional second district. Ashford, a former Republican who likes to "govern from the Center" and has an anti-choice record, was endorsed by The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). What's more surprising, kinda, is that Kara Eastman, who is openly pro-choice wasn't endorsed by a single high profile pro-choice organization. The only pro-choice organization to endorse her was Vote Pro Choice. The silence of groups like NARAL, Planned Parenthood and Emily's List is especially frustrating, given that they vocally opposed Heath Mello, the Democrat who ran for mayor of Omaha, because of his anti-choice record, which was better than Ashford's, and despite his promise to be a pro-choice mayor. Not to mention that mayor's have less influence on abortion than members of congress. But I digress.
Recorded May 5, 2017. Both parties have put us at the mercy of the for-profit health insurance industry for too long, and while Democrats sing "Nah-nah-hey-hey" at House Republicans for passing the treacherous "American Health Care Act", all this political football diminishes the health of millions of Americans . But the present charade on both sides of the aisle appears to have awakened many Americans and some politicians to the only viable answer: single payer healthcare. Debbie Wasserman Schultz says "MYOB" to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren for DARING to question the judgment of Barack Obama for accepting a $400,000 speaking fee from a Wall Street investment firm. But the Democrats' close ties to Wall Street and Big Pharma are not only "our business"--they are a major reason we have Trump in the White House. Debbie and the Dems can run but they can't hide as we continue to call them out for working for the donors -- and against the interests of the 99%. "Progressive" media from MSNBC to Daily Kos attack Bernie Sanders for backing "anti-abortion" Democratic mayoral candidate Heath Mello in Omaha, and a "pro-gun" Democratic house candidate in Montana. As the Hillocrats look to marginalize Bernie, they offer insight as to why Democrats have lost a record number of legislative seats during President Obama's tenure. Only Bernie seems to understand the true meaning of a "50-state strategy!" Tulsi Gabbard is one of the lone voices for peace in American politics. Her profound message is being condemned by "liberal" media and Democrats alike, so it is up to us to help her spread the word! The tide is turning, the Trauma of Trump and deception of the Democrats is awakening Americans to the fact that we have to work together to provide the services we all need to survive, so make the calls, attend the town halls, and work for progressive candidates on the local level. That's the best way to make sure this administration continues to Feel the Bern! So, that happened. This week, we've reached the end of Trump's first 100 days. How will it be remembered? In many ways, it's been like watching someone's body reject an organ transplant. Somehow, Trump has managed to hit the century mark at the threshold of a government shutdown fight with his own party. Nevertheless, some things never change, and 100 days into the Trump presidency we can report with confidence that everything remains really, really great for people who are really, really rich. Meanwhile, we are taking a look in at the mayoral race in Omaha, which would normally be a sleepy race focused mainly on things like potholes. But the Democratic nominee, Heath Mello, has become one of those totemic candidates in 2017 -- a test of post-2016 Democratic Party strength. And so Democrats made a big investment in raising his profile, only to discover that he was not with them on a key issue: reproductive rights. Finally, our guest today is Jonathan Taplin, a filmmaker and author who used to be a tour... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, Arif and Ben talk about the controversy surrounding the late-breaking Bernie Sanders endorsement for Jon Ossof and how it contrasts with the easy endorsement he gave Heath Mello. From there, they engage in a wider discussion about the pragmatic implications of demanding ideological purity and how it relates to primaries and general elections.
Bill Press welcomes Tim Mak, Gabriel Debenedetti, & Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) to discuss the House Oversight Committee's assertion that Michael Flynn broke the law, the rocky state of the Trump-Russia probe, a dispatch from Bernie Sanders' unity tour, & Donald Trump's broken promise on the wall - the full Wednesday edition of the Bill Press Show!
Bill Press welcomes Eliza Collins, Emma Roller, & Emily Crockett to discuss Donald Trump's less-than-surprising tax plan, whether funding for the border wall will cause a government shutdown, the need for Democrats to fully embrace weed, & Tom Perez's comments on pro-lifers in the Democratic Party - the full Tuesday edition of the Bill Press Show!
During The News Round Up, Selena Hill, Ilyssa Fuchs, and Jaqi Cohen discussed several hot-button news stories, including Bernie Sanders' support of Heath Mello, a pro-life Democratic candidate running for mayor in Omaha. The team questioned whether or not progressives should continue to support Sanders, even if they only disagree with him on one issue.
