(AURN News) - The White House is maintaining its efforts to pass federal legislation guaranteeing paid family and medical leave for American workers. Tom Perez, Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Jennifer Klein, Director of the Gender Policy Council, convened a meeting with leaders from several states to discuss strategies for enacting a national paid leave program. The discussion focused on the successes already achieved at the state level and explored ways to build momentum for a federal policy. In a statement, the White House says it remains committed to helping families "take the time they need to bond with a new child; care for a seriously ill loved one; heal from their own serious illness; address circumstances arising from a loved one's military deployment; find safety from domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking; or grieve the death of a loved one." To reinforce this commitment, President Biden has incorporated funding for a national paid family and medical leave program in his proposed fiscal year 2025 budget. States participating in the White House meeting included New Jersey, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Mexico. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Epik Project actively disrupts sex buying, intervening at the point of sale to shed light on the reality of that transaction. Benjamin and Tom discuss the demand side of trafficking, touching on his experiences working with sex buyers and analyzing the culture that has groomed men to feel sexually entitled to another's body. In 2010, Tom began engaging in the anti-trafficking fight and quickly noticed that while men are the primary drivers behind the demand that fuels sex trafficking, very few were practically involved in effective efforts to abolish it. His vision to create meaningful onramps for men to join this fight has resulted in the training, equipping and support of hundreds of volunteer men across 20 cities in North America. Wes Moore is running for Governor in Maryland in the 2022 race. This is Michael's conversation with him from 7 May 2010 on his then-new book "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates." The book was published on 27 April 2010.
Maryland voters head to the polls next week. Mail-in voting has already begun. Early voting starts Thursday. Election day is two weeks from Tuesday. Today, it's a special installment in our series of Conversations with the Candidates 2022. Two of the three leading candidates in the Democratic primary for Governor join Tom for the hour to discuss the issues on the minds of Marylanders. In early June, a poll published by the Baltimore Sun identified Comptroller Peter Franchot, non-profit executive Wes Moore and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez leading a 10-person field in the Democratic primary. Those three candidates polled in the low double-digits. A large number of respondents said they had not made up their minds. In a poll released on Tuesday of this week, commissioned by WYPR, the Baltimore Banner and Goucher College showed the race between Mr. Franchot, Mr. Moore and Mr. Perez to be even closer than it was in early June. Those three candidates are now in a statistical tie. The other candidate who is closest to them is former Attorney General Doug Gansler, who is about ten points behind. We invited the top three candidates to appear on Tuesday of this week. Peter Franchot's spokesperson declined our invitation citing a schedule conflict. We tried a different date, today, and once again citing a schedule conflict, the Franchot campaign declined our invitation. And so, we are pleased to welcome Wes Moore and Tom Perez to today's conversation. They join us on Zoom. Wes Moore is a best-selling author who has worked in the private and non-profit sector. He was most recently the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a national philanthropic organization. And, full disclosure: he once hosted Future City,a public affairs show on WYPR. He has chosen as his running mate former Delegate Aruna Miller from Montgomery County… Tom Perez is a lawyer who headed the Civil Rights Division in the US Justice Department, and served as MD labor secretary during the O'Malley administration. He was also appointed US Labor Secretary during the Obama Administration, and he was the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He has chosen as his running mate Shannon Sneed, a former Baltimore City Councilwoman… We begin with an opportunity for each candidate to say hello and explain why they deserve your vote. Yesterday, the Maryland Court of Appeals postponed the date for primary elections that had been scheduled for June 28th. They will now be held on July 19th. The deadline for candidates to file to be on the ballot has also been pushed back from March 22nd to April 15th. The delays are related to the fact that various courts are hearing challenges to the re-districting maps for Congressional districts and State House and Senate seats that were passed by Democrats in the General Assembly, and which are opposed by Governor Larry Hogan and Republicans. Election officials worried that they wouldn't be able to get ballots ready in time for the earlier dates. Today on Midday, a conversation with a gentleman whose name will be on the ballot in the Democratic primary for Governor, whenever the election is held. Apparently, the path to putting a Democrat in the White House runs through God. No, that’s not me saying God favors Republicans. That is, essentially, the argument from foul-mouthed DNC Chairman Tom Perez. He’s uncomfortable with the fact that church-going people disapprove of Democrat candidates motivated in large part by their conviction on issues of life and death … convictions about abortion. Perez recently complained about clergy who are willing to support Trump motivated in large part on the issue of life. He’s frustrated that “people buy it” from these clergy—and I quote—“because that’s their only source.” Perez is unnerved by churchgoers who lean on their spiritual leaders, leaders who are working from the Bible rather than relying on today’s secular elites. The short of it is Tom Perez would like you to stop attending church because it puts a real crimp in the ability of Democrats to make the state supreme.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
