In this episode of Stories from Real Life, host Melvin E. Edwards engages with former Baltimore social worker Jack Kammer to discuss critical male issues, gender dynamics, and the societal expectations placed on men. The conversation explores Kammer's anecdotes and his work on the "wimp" bill with the late Congressman Elijah Cummings. They delve into the importance of recognizing male struggles, the impact of fatherhood, and the evolution of the women's movement, emphasizing the need for a balanced dialogue about gender equality. Jack Kammer discusses the critical role of fatherhood in society in this conversation, stressing the need for men to be recognized as nurturing and caring parents. He addresses the concept of toxic masculinity, advocating for self-examination among men while critiquing the way the term is often misused. The discussion also explores the challenges boys face in transitioning to manhood, highlighting societal disincentives and the emotional struggles men endure. Finally, Kammer sheds light on the double burden faced by black men, navigating both racism and sexism, and calls for a broader understanding of gender issues that affect all men. https://www.malefriendlymedia.com/ Want to be a guest on Stories from Real Life? “What do you think we should do?" Many in-house lawyers dread this question from business colleagues. What's the best response? Spoiler alert, it's not, "It's a business decision!"Tracey Lester-Smith, former General Counsel of NASCAR and Bellator MMA, joins The Legal Department to help lawyers confidently give opinions. Tracey argues that providing thoughtful opinions is a key differentiator between good lawyers and truly great ones.In this episode, Tracey shares how working with civil rights icon Elijah Cummings and her MMA training empowered her to give opinions as the first lawyer in a male-dominated combat sports company. She also discusses her transition from the racetrack to a year-long family journey around the world, and how she learned to take her hands "off the wheel."If you're ready to elevate your legal advice and become an indispensable advisor, this episode is a must-listen.

In today's episode I speak with Donald Sherman who is a government ethics and oversight lawyer who is currently the Senior Vice President & Chief Counsel at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, CREW (where, full disclosure, he works with my wife). In addition to his non-profit litigation experience at CREW, Donald has worked in all three branches of government. And before that he worked for Rep. Elijah Cummings, then-Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform including as Chief Oversight Counsel. He started his legal career as a law clerk Honorable Neil E. Kravitz of the District of Columbia Superior Court and worked in private practice at Crowell & Morning. Donald is a proud graduate of both Georgetown University and Georgetown Law (Go Hoyas). In our conversation we discuss his decision to become a lawyer in elementary school, how crashing a wedding helped him get his first job in government oversight, the nuts and bolts of being an oversight and ethics lawyer on Capitol Hill and in the non-profit space, how the Hill and advocacy organizations interact when it comes to government oversight work, developing the skills of factual development and investigations, what constitutes success when advocating for major political change, the ways to transition from the private to the public sector, the superpower of being an effective generalist, and the role that people/kindness/relationships play in the life and career of a lawyer. We compiled a few of our favorite moments from the last few months. Enjoy! (00:00-11:01): President Trump made some remarks about Baltimore being a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess”. Brian and Ian discuss this compelling piece about nurturing environments in which people can openly disagree…but without the fear of being caricatured, labeled, or demonized. (21:12-30:12): Steve Zhou writes “What Psychology Offers Christians Amid Political Polarization” in Christianity Today. Brian and Ian discuss the premise of being politically homeless and how tensions have risen within the church when it comes to political preference. (30:12-39:15): My church came together to pay off everyone’s debt. This congregation took the idea of community and put it to practice. Brian and Ian discuss the details behind this article and express how amazing the creativity of this church is. (39:25-48:25): What do you do with a crappy pastor? Do you get rid of them, pray for them, both? Brian and Ian touch on this tongue-in-cheek article from David L Hansen. It touches, in a humorous way, the manner of which a congregation ought to encourage and build up their leaders even if it seems hopeless. (48:25-59:05): Editor and Chief of Christianity Today Mark Galli joins the show to discuss his essay series titled “The Elusive Presence”.
