The Serious Problem of Picky Eaters & Will AI Make Us Dumber?

Something You Should Know

When men get sick with a cold or the flu, do they actually suffer more than women — or just complain louder? Some fascinating research suggests there may be real biological differences in immune response between the sexes, which could explain the infamous “man cold.” I break down what scientists have discovered and what it really means. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29229663/ Picky eating feels normal today — separate meals for kids at the dinner table is often the norm. But it wasn't always this way. For most of history, children ate what adults ate or they didn't eat at all. Helen Zoe Veit, award-winning historian, associate professor at Michigan State University, and author of Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History (https://amzn.to/3OolXKY) explains how and why picky eating became so common, the serious problems it creates — and why it doesn't have to be that way. Will artificial intelligence make us intellectually lazy — or is it about to unleash a new wave of human potential? Zack Kass, one of OpenAI's first 100 employees and author of The Next Renaissance: AI and the Expansion of Human Potential (https://amzn.to/3MoYM2I) argues that tools like ChatGPT are only scratching the surface. He explains why AI may not replace human thinking but amplify it — if we use it wisely. People form powerful judgments about you within seconds of seeing your online profile photo. Are you trustworthy? Competent? Approachable? Research shows the ideal expression isn't a huge grin or a stone-cold stare but something more nuanced — and getting it right can influence how others perceive you professionally and socially. https://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerdooley/2025/04/02/should-you-smile-in-your-profile-photo-heres-what-research-shows/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS QUINCE: Refresh your wardrobe with Quince! And while at first glance this might seem like a departure from our usual stay-or-go conversations, it is anything but.Because before you can make a clear decision about your marriage, you have to rebuild trust with yourself. So many of us have been trained to override our bodies. We override exhaustion. We override sadness. We override anger. We override our no. We override our intuition. And then, standing at one of the most consequential crossroads of our lives, we expect clarity to magically appear.Of course it feels like chaos. In this episode, we explore what it means to come home to your body in a grounded, practical way. We talk about early conditioning and shame. About how coping behaviors are often attempts at soothing a dysregulated nervous system. About the difference between demands and requests, and how that shift alone can transform the emotional architecture of our relationships. At its core, this conversation is about embodiment. About understanding that self-trust is not built through analysis alone, but through learning to feel and respond to your own internal signals with respect. If you are navigating uncertainty, especially around divorce, this episode invites you to slow down. To return to the foundation beneath the decision. To rebuild the connection that makes any choice — stay or go — something you can stand behind with steadiness.Show Notes:Subscribe to Stay or Go on SubstackChandra's WebsiteHandbook for Human Potential: An Accessible Guide to Personal Growth - Chandra Zas, Britta Jo and OthersChandra Zas's chapters: Chapter 0 and Chapter 10Handbook for Human Potential Amazon reviewsNo Bad Kids - Janet LansburyNonviolent Communication - Marshall B. In this episode we discuss the following: Scott's definition of intelligence: the dynamic interplay of engagement and abilities in the pursuit of goals. When we give people a chance to go deep into an area that they love, over a long period of time, they can develop expertise and brain structures that can override some of our IQ limitations. The thing that surprised Scott most as he researched intelligence was just how predictive IQ is. Scott thought he was going to be on a vendetta against IQ but ended up falling in love with the science of IQ, intelligence, and the brain. Differences in ability are both natural and valuable, and recognizing them—rather than denying them—creates better paths for growth and contribution. Unlocking our potential requires intellectual honesty, patience, and environments that allow passion and skill to reinforce one another over time.

You're disciplined. You're committed. You show up every day and put in the work. But what happens when effort and motivation aren't delivering the results you know you're capable of? Santiago Brand is an international educator and consultant in brain mapping and neurofeedback who uses real brain data to reveal what's actually happening when people perform, stall, or burn out. Trained as both a sport and clinical psychologist, Santiago has spent over 17 years across more than 26 countries helping leaders and high performers improve focus, recover faster from stress, and perform with greater consistency—not by grinding harder, but by understanding the brain that's running the show. In this conversation, Santiago reveals why even the most driven individuals hit invisible walls. You'll discover how trauma markers and emotional dysregulation show up in brain maps, why high performers resist the truth about their own humanity, and how quantitative EEG technology turns invisible obstacles into something you can finally work with. Because once you see what your brain is doing, you can't unsee it—and that's when real transformation begins. If you've ever felt like you're doing all the right things but the breakthrough still hasn't happened, this episode shows you exactly where to look next.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit stayorgo.substack.comEpisode 94: In this episode, I start by inviting us to slow down together. I recorded this on February 8, 2026, and I could feel how loud life has been lately. Instead of showing up with a tidy bow and a perfect lesson, I let this be a real conversation between me and you. A place to breathe, to soften, and to tell the truth about what it feels like when your inner world is rearranging itself.Because today we are talking about falling apart, and why it might be the most honest thing your soul has ever done.I'm introducing you to a concept I just found this week and immediately knew I needed to bring to you: positive disintegration. The kind of breakdown that isn't a failure, but a signal. A sign that the strategies you used to survive, the roles you learned to play, and the fantasies you clung to are no longer able to hold back what you already know in your bones. In other words, it's not that you are breaking. It's that your denial is breaking. And something truer is trying to come through. We talk about why our culture fears endings, grief, and death, and how that fear shows up psychologically when we're in the crucible of change, especially when you're considering divorce. I connect this to the life-death-life cycle, to the way nature does this without apologizing, and to the brutal tenderness of becoming. If you've been feeling heavy, depressed, anxious, or stuck, I want you to hear this clearly: those feelings do not automatically mean you're doing it wrong. Sometimes they mean you're finally doing it right.I also share one of my favorite images for this process: the butterfly becoming the goo. That disorienting, humiliating, sacred middle. The place where you cannot go back to who you were, but you cannot yet see who you're becoming. If you're there right now, you are not behind. You are not broken. You are in the chrysalis. And I bring in two powerful texts that help us name what we're living: Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents and Women Who Run with the Wolves. We talk about Skeleton Woman, Lady Death, and what it means to stop throwing the parts of ourselves we fear off the cliff. We talk about building a foundation that can hold you through the unraveling, not by rushing to fix the feelings, but by staying with yourself inside them.If you're in that tender, terrifying season where everything you built your life on feels shaky, this episode is for you. It's a reminder that the breakdown might not be the end of your story. It might be the beginning of your true self returning.

Targ's work explored the measurable capabilities of human consciousness to perceive information beyond the limits of space and time. Through experiments, declassified programs, and decades of teaching, he has argued that remote viewing is a real, trainable human ability—one that challenges conventional assumptions about mind, perception, and the nature of reality.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Together, Nancy and I explore: • Building confidence before the world gives you permission • Lessons from the 1980s farm crisis and the power of human potential • Career pivots that shape long-term leadership • Why reflection, journaling, and contemplative practice matter • Letting go of chronic busyness to invest in yourself • Becoming the mentor you once needed • And the truth Nancy discovered: she was the only thing holding herself back This episode is an invitation to pause, listen inward, and ask: Where am I ready to stop standing in my own way? The daily news is filled with stories of division, wars, mass shootings, rights getting overturned, political chaos, and so much continuous devastation. What can we do collectively to ease the pain? Our guest today, scholar, philosopher, and researcher Jean Houston, Ph.D., delves into the idea of finding possibility, even during these times of great grief. We have been conditioned to respond to the terrible, but it does not have to be this way. As an icon in the Human Potential movement, Jean shares ideas about how the Renaissance, with its advancements in music, art, poetry, and cosmology,  came after great plagues and times of war, much like the world's situation today. Could we be in a new Renaissance period now? We are once again in a similar time of radical growth, and we have the power within us to see new possibilities and reach mythical potential in our human evolution.   Jean shares stories of her travels and talks about her friendship with scholar Joseph Campbell and how they would have "beautiful fights" which were friendly arguments and deep discussions about mythology and the fate of humanity. Campbell wrote extensively about the "Hero's Journey," while Jean considered the "Heroine's Journey." Part of the problem is that 50% of the human race is not being recognized for women's immense creativity and power. Women's ways are missing. With an emphasis on compassion, cooperation, community, and process rather than product and competition, humane creativity must be celebrated by acknowledging the achievements of women.  She also talks about her fateful meeting of evolutionary philosopher and Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who became one of her mentors when she was much younger. At an early age, they would have profound discussions of time, history, and transformation, as she gained an alternate education of possibilities through their talks. Scott Barry Kaufman is a big inspiration to me in research and the human sciences. He is a humanistic psychologist, the creator of self-actualization coaching, and simply a refreshing person who brings a sense of “keeping it real” to the world of self-development.Scott is a professor of psychology at Columbia University, the director of the Center for Human Potential, and among the top 1% most-cited scientists in the world for his research on intelligence and creativity (= wow, the academic sisu this has required). He also hosts The Psychology Podcast. With over 25 million downloads, it's one of the leading psychology podcasts globally.Scott's foundation lies in humanistic psychology, which emphasizes the importance of meaning, wholeness, and the lived experience of being human. Rather than sinking into all sorts of neurosis over what the ego likes to label as “good–bad” or “right–wrong,” this perspective invites us to feel into all the complexity (and wonder) that comes with being human. We spoke about a wide range of topics, such as creativity, human potential, feeling like an impostor at times (and why it can actually be a good thing), his hopes and hesitations about the future, and what it means to be true to your heart.Last year, Scott published his 11th (!) book, Rise above! You can explore Scott's work and many valuable resources at scottbarrykaufman.com. I warmly recommend checking it out. The site is a treasure trove of insight. The conversation we had moved something in me, which I felt afterward. What I can make of it is that witnessing authenticity stirs us, brings us closer to our center and to each other. It feels grounded and safe, and we are indeed finely tuned to sense it.Especially in the context of a recorded conversation, where we tend to seek to perform and give “the right answers” (which is, of course, very human), it felt beautiful to witness such realness. The discussion brought back a thought my Aikido teacher once shared with me: “It's easy to be clever. It's much harder to be loving.”Thanks for listening and for being part of the sisu journey

Host Justin Brown, former Secretary of Human Services for Oklahoma, introduces a new era of innovation and transformation, moving beyond negative headlines to explore how leaders are building connected, human-centered systems. In this episode, Justin and co-host Luke Williams are joined by a panel of "battle-tested leaders" who have transitioned from public service to driving change in the private sector: Robert Holloman, Laura Zeilinger, and Sean Toole. Together, they discuss why the convergence of seasoned leadership, a deeper understanding of social determinants, and emerging technology has placed the industry at the "dawn of a renaissance".In this conversation, the panel explores:• Culture vs. Capacity: How agencies can shift from transactional processing to relational support by addressing workforce shortages and building a culture that is trauma-informed and outcomes-driven.• Elevating the Customer Experience: Why government digital services must rival private sector experiences (like Amazon) to build trust, and the powerful shift from "meeting people where they are" to "meeting them where they dream".• Removing Systemic Barriers: Utilizing data integration and AI to reduce the "scarcity tax" on families, eliminating the need for repetitive paperwork and in-person office visits.• The Role of Technology: How AI agents and data sharing (similar to the IRS/FAFSA model) can unlock organizational capacity, allowing social workers to focus on solving complex problems rather than administrative tasks.• Public-Private Partnerships: How former government leaders and the private sector can collaborate to manage risk and drive the bold action necessary for genuine transformation.Join us for a deep dive into the future of Health and Human Services, where efficiency meets empathy to unleash human potential.
