In this episode, I talk with my dear friend and colleague, Helena Mooney, who is an Aware Parenting instructor and Hand in Hand instructor. She shares about her experience of starting off with Classical Attachment Parenting with her daughter, and how little sleep she had, and how exhausted she was. She shares about how weird she found Aware Parenting at first, and her unsureness in practicing it at the beginning, and how different it was from Classical Attachment Parenting. Then she talks about how that perception changed as she saw what a difference it made to her daughter's sleep. The change took a bit of a while because her daughter had a backlog of feelings, and she explains this process. Along with getting more sleep again, her daughter also stopped hitting once she started Aware Parenting. She then goes on to share about what a huge difference she experienced with her second child and sleep, starting practicing Aware Parenting at the beginning; she expresses the difference in sleep between the two of them being "night and day." I was so delighted to sit down with Aware Parenting Instructor, Hand-in-Hand Parenting Instructor and host of the Parenting with PLAY Podcast, Helena Mooney for this episode, and chat about a topic that many parents struggle with - BEDTIME!We discuss the importance of shifting the current bedtime paradigm of quiet and calmness, to instead meeting our child's needs and wherever they are at, whether that be holding space for upset feelings, or using play, wrestling and rowdiness at bedtime.Helena explains why we need to throw "bedtime routines" out the window and why these "routines" are setting us up for failure.Helena shares some playful games to help children with brushing their teeth, power-reversal games for bedtime and joining our children in being loud and noisy at bedtime, and why that will work in our favour as parents, while also having the added bonus of helping our child sleep better at night. We both also chat about how sleep in a form of separation, which can lead to feelings of anxiety in children, and why these feelings can still occur if we co-sleep with our child. There is so much wisdom, knowledge and fun in this episode. This episode is one that will benefit every parent, because we've all been there on the battleground that is bedtime.Where to Find Helena:Website - Parenting with PLAYFacebook - Parenting with PLAY with Helena MooneyInstagram - @helenamooney_parentingwithplayPodcast - Parenting with PLAY PodcastResources Mentioned:Hold on to Your Kids by Gorden Neufeld and Gabor MateParenting for a Peaceful World by Robin GrilleWhere the Crawdads Sing by Delia OwensABOUT HELENA:I'm a certified Parenting by Connection Instructor, an Aware Parenting Instructor, Doula, Maternity Services Advocate and Mum to 2 children. Marion talks about her academic and psychotherapeutic background before becoming a mother, and how Aware Parenting resonated with all that she'd learnt. Lael talks about the clear differences she saw between her two older children and her youngest child, related to Aware Parenting. Marion shares about how she realised that her daughter had feelings to express, and how she knew that her daughter's expressing her feelings in her arms was helpful. We talk lots about the huge leap that Aware Parenting with a baby is, the importance of self-compassion and going slowly. We also talk about how Aware Parenting is the third way with sleep, and the three things that babies and children need for sound sleep.
