In this episode of the Aware Parenting Podcast, which is part of the Foundations of Aware Parenting series, I discuss separation anxiety. I delve into the history and current usage of the term and I contrast Aware Parenting's understanding of separation anxiety with Classical Attachment Parenting's understanding. I explore various causes of separation anxiety, including developmental stages, a need for safety, accumulated feelings, past unhealed separation trauma, and the parent's own past unhealed separation trauma. I also emphasise the effect of cultural beliefs on the understanding of separation anxiety and, as always, I offer lots of compassion to parents and children who are experiencing separation anxiety. I provide practical suggestions, such as the use of separation games and listening to crying and raging, to help both parents and children experience more connection, safety, and healing. We've had a whole lot of sickness in our house these past three weeks. Posie has had adenovirus and rhinovirus and then 10 days later, one by one, Hayds, Ray and I were struck with the worst type of gastro we've ever had.And so unsurprisingly, that's meant very little childcare these past three weeks and plenty of cancelled and postponed Ready or Not interviews. And so, for the sake of transparency and showing what it actually takes to make work, work as a mum, we're digging into the archives while we rebuild our library of interviews. If you've been around these parts from the very beginning, you may have heard this interview with one of Australia's favourite parents. And if you're newer to the show, you mightn't even be aware that the magnificent Lael Stone has even graced this podcast. Whether you fall into the former or the latter camps. I cannot recommend listening to the wise words within this episode enough. This episode was originally published over 18 months ago, and while I'd like to think my recording equipment and line of questioning has improved, Lael is a forever class act and I learned as much listening back to this episode as I did at the time. So let's get into it.See you back here with something new next week.---Lael Stone is a Parenting Educator, TEDx speaker, author, and the co-creator of Woodline Primary and The Aware Parenting Podcast. She has a son and two daughters ranging from their late teens to early adulthood, and in many ways, her career trajectory has mirrored her parenting journey. Now I don't know if it's that soothing voice or the way she holds space for those around her, but either way, an hour of conversation with Lael is much like a therapy session. I felt lighter after this chat, and I think you will, too. Here, we talk knowing when to walk away even when the party's humming, how we can help our children without solving their problems for them, and the moment she did a Ted talk in front of her adoring kids.---Thanks for listening to Ready or Not! If you liked the show, please tell your friends, subscribe or leave a review. You can also find us on Instagram at readyornot.pod.You can check out Lael's work online here. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Boon Wurong people of the Kulin Nation. There is an episode called 'Go away" from early on in The Aware Parenting Podcast, AND I felt called to record another one. That's partly because one of my favourite parts in my new best-selling book 'I'm Here and I'm Listening' is where we see this from a child's perspective. In fact, when parents ask about helpful responses to their crying child saying "Go away!" I often ask them to reflect back on a time in their own childhood when they had a lot of big feelings bubbling and they shouted "Go away!" Did they really want their parent to go away? Or would they have loved them to have stayed lovingly present with their big feelings? I invite you to reflect on that, too! When children are moving out of the fight, flight or freeze response, they need to know that they are physically and emotionally safe, so that they no longer need to try to protect themselves and can let go into the resolution of that response and the release of those feelings. Children need the safety of an adult's presence to really know that they are safe. If we leave them alone when they're raging, they may stop, but when we look closer, it's likely because they have dissociated from those feelings. Of course this is a really nuanced process, where we play with the balance of attention, which is providing physical and emotional safety in the present so that they can revisit stressful or traumatic experiences from the past. This requires our attunement and listening to exactly the amount of closeness which will help them feel safe so they can move into resolution, without overriding their need to feel powerful, which is also an essential part of the healing process. In the podcast, I read out the child's story from the book. I am so willing for 'I'm Here and I'm Listening' to continue to be a best seller, and to reach the hands, hearts and minds of many many thousands of parents. If you'd like to support me with that, are you willing to share about the book, such as on social media? If you have been thinking of buying it, are you willing to buy it now or really soon, to support it to continue being a best seller? I absolutely love that Clare Louise Brumley, PhD, has returned to the podcast. She was on episode 135 about an evolutionary perspective on sleep. She is an Aware Parenting instructor as well as registered nutritionist and Integrative Medicine Practitioner and she did her PhD on this topic. We talk about: Why we are meant to feel a lot of feelings in relation to food; How an evolutionary perspective helps parents; How we can support children to use their sensory system to know what food is optimal for them; How the changes, particularly in the last 200 years, muddy the waters in sensing food; What we can do with Aware Parenting to clear the system to support our children's innate wisdom; The process of supporting children to listen in to what foods aren't a fit; Which foods take longer for children and adults to be able to sense is a no; Why Aware Parenting's centrality of connection and attunement is so vital here; How we are supporting children to be researchers; My favourite phrase of Clare Louise's – "information without judgment brings choice"; How this is an invitation for even more connection; Why children will tend to go for sweet foods and not bitter foods; What can be going on if children only want to eat a small variety of foods or to keep food types separate; Why children don't need a lot of leafy greens in the early years, especially if they've had a long breastfeeding journey; In a wild food model there is heaps of free choice but lots of natural limits; The protective mechanisms innate in the seasonal eating model; How we can generally feel if our body doesn't want a natural food more quickly than a food combined manufactured food; We would love to hear any questions you have and Clare-Louise will come back for a Q and A follow-up of this! Please come to The Aware Parenting Podcast on Instagram or FB to share your questions! Are you experiencing stress at the moment? If so, is there anything you can do to reduce your stress levels? Anything you can say no to? Things that you can do less of? And most of all, do you have empathy buddies to whom you can express your feelings and opportunities for some peaceful pauses in your life, even if that's just 10 minutes in the bath or leaving messages on Voxer? So much love to you! xoxox You can find our more about my work at: www.marionrose.net

Marion is a Level 2 Aware Parenting Instructor and the Regional Coordinator for Aust/NZ, the Founder of The Marion Method, the creator of many amazing courses, has a PhD in the mother-infant relationship and the co-host of The Aware Parenting Podcast. Our conversation took us on a journey with the many aspects of parenting, why shame and guilt come from the Disconnect Domination Culture. We explored The Marion Method and the 3 aspects of Love, Will and Conversations with Life.Marion shared her knowledge and wisdom on re-parenting ourselves, and re-culturing, so that we can living in our true power of Will and Love.Where to find Marion:Website: www.marionrose.netFacebook: Marion Rose Ph.DInstagram: Marion Rose; Aware Parenting; The Aware Parenting PodcastResources:The Patterning Instinct by Jeremy LentABOUT MARION:Marion has been passionate about understanding babies since she first realised that her own premature birth had influenced her so much. That led her to a degree in psychology and a Ph.D. on the mother-infant relationship in the context of PND at Cambridge University. Marion spent her twenties immersed in this world, both working in academia as a post doctoral research Fellow in infant cognition, and then as a university lecturer on The Therapeutic Relationship for MA students. Alongside this, she trained as a psychospiritual psychotherapist and had her own private practice. In her thirties she put all this into practice, becoming a mother. Marion trained in Private Subconscious Mind Healing and Hypnobirthing and Calm Birth and used these whilst freebirthing. She found out about Aware Parenting whilst she was pregnant with her daughter in 2000, and was passionate about it from then on. She became an Aware Parenting Instructor 3 years later. Marion also immersed myself in Nonviolent Communication. She started creating online courses in 2014 both in Aware Parenting and in her own emerging work - The Marion Method, which is a form of psychospiritual reparenting and reculturing. In 2019, she started The Aware Parenting Podcast with her colleague and friend, Lael Stone. Marion is the Aware Parenting Regional Coordinator for Australia and New Zealand. She is passionate about supporting parents of babies who want to practice Aware Parenting and also people who want to become Aware Parenting Instructors.
In this episode of The Aware Parenting Podcast, Marion talks to Helena Mooney, an Aware Parenting instructor, about travelling with children. Both Marion and Helena have travelled frequently between Australia and the UK with babies and young children. We include information about: how to prepare children for travelling, what we can do on a plane or airport terminal to help things go more smoothly, how we can respond if our child cries on the plane, and how we can listen to feelings when staying with friends or family. We share information relevant to travelling in other ways, such as in the car or on a train, and what you can do if your baby always cries in the car. We also talk about the one thing that we found most helpful for ourselves so that we could play with our children more and listen to more feelings whilst travelling. Helena also has a podcast and also a recent episode on travel; her podcast is called Parenting with PLAY and you can find it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/parenting-with-play/id1470033587 Helena has a course called Annoying to Amazing, which you can find here: https://parentingwithplay.com.au/amazing/ She has a free playful discipline masterclass here: https://parentingwithplay.com.au/playful-discipline-masterclass/ Helena and Marion also have the Aware Parenting Babies Course. We talk about the impact on our grown up children of having been raised this way and the amazing relationships we have with them as a result of Aware Parenting. We share about how we have increasingly been able to support ourselves and prioritise taking care of our needs as mothers, to heal our wounds and traumas. Lael talks about the creation of her school which aims to prioritise connection and emotional health. And we talk about learning to trust our children and ourselves. Lael Stone is an Australian educator, speaker, author, mother, and parenting counselor who has been working with families for over 18 years. Her TEDx talk on how to raise emotionally intelligent children has been watched nearly 1 million times, she is the co-host of a successful podcast, namely, “The Aware Parenting Podcast”, and she is the co-creator of an innovative new school in Australia based on emotional wellbeing and connection. On today's episode Lael shares a very challenging personal experience of hers with the near-loss of her daughter during birth but how that led her to understand trauma & healing and how it shaped her career trajectory thereafter. We then discuss conscious parenting. What is it? What is involved in the art of listening? Why is it often so hard to meet our kids in their anger or in their tears? How important is it for us to heal our own trauma so that our children do not inherit our potentially dysfunctional emotional legacies? (PS: It's bloody important). In the last section we talk about educational changes we wish to see in the world, and educational changes that Lael is in fact a real part of through her work with the school she co-created. What does it mean to nurture the whole child in education? Where are we going wrong in mainstream education? This was one of my favourite podcast episodes yet because Lael brought wisdom with such warmth in a true Aussie down-to-Earth fashion. In this episode of The Aware Parenting Podcast, we discuss setting limits with teens and how we can create opportunities for healing and growth. We explored our reactions and responses and what teens might be needing when they are upset. We looked at the different reasons teens may be looking for limits and how looking behind the behaviour can be helpful. We also discussed the power of connection to elicit co-operation and how using punishments can create more unwanted behaviour. As always, we delved into our own internal stories and what could be helpful when meeting big feelings in our teenagers and what we may have wanted from the adults in our life when we were younger.
