How your child sees themselves and how they think others see them – what they think about themselves and what they tell themselves about what and who they are.A child with a poor self-image will often have low self-esteem. The Inside Scoop with Anytime Soccer Training - Discussing Youth Soccer from Around the World
In this episode, I share a real conversation I had with a soccer dad wrestling with a common tryout dilemma — should his child join the more competitive A team or stick with the solid B team?I break down how I think through these choices with my own kids: focusing less on titles, leagues, or promises, and more on training environment, realistic commitment, and what we actually control as parents. If you're a parent trying to help your child navigate team choices, this one's for you. Let's get better together.
The Inside Scoop with Anytime Soccer Training - Discussing Youth Soccer from Around the World
Hey everyone, Neil Crawford here, founder of Anytime Soccer Training. This episode gets personal. I'm responding to a message from a fellow soccer parent about their child getting anxious and “forgetting their training” during games. That hit home for me—because I've been there with my own kids, and I know how helpless it can feel.In this episode, I open up about how I've approached those tough moments. I share how I break the game down into simple, specific actions—not just vague goals like “be confident.” I talk about how I used principles of play like penetration, switching the point of attack, and creativity in the final third as anchors to help my sons focus on just one or two key things each year.We also dive into the emotional side of all this: how we as parents have to acknowledge our biases, manage our impulses, and give our kids the space and time to grow—technically, mentally, and emotionally. I talk about the role of visualization, mindfulness, and using small physical cues as reminders to help our kids stay present and intentional on the field. This episode is for the parents who are trying to figure out how to support their kids without overstepping. For those wondering if what they're doing is too much—or not enough. And for those who, like me, are trying to get better every day. Here is a link to the website referenced in the show: https://www.competitivedge.com/ Let's get better together.

Our host shares a personal story of her daughter's struggle with chronic bed-wetting and an ADHD misdiagnosis, revealing how something as simple as nasal breathing and tongue positioning can significantly impact our health. Join us as we delve into how mouth breathing can disrupt sleep and cause a cascade of health problems and discover ways to improve your well-being through better breathing habits. Let's take another deep breath—through our noses this time—and commit to improving our health one breath at a time. Key Takeaways:-Breathing is fundamental to life: From the moment we are born to the moment we leave this world, breathing connects every aspect of our health—mental, physical, and emotional.-Nasal breathing is essential: Our bodies are designed to breathe through the nose, which optimises oxygen intake and supports proper bodily function. Mouth breathing can lead to various health issues.-Impact of mouth breathing on development: Mouth breathing in children can affect their facial structure, growth, and overall development, putting them in a constant state of fight-or-flight.-Sleep disruption and cognitive function: Mouth breathing and poor tongue function can disturb REM sleep, reducing cognitive performance by up to 35% the following day.-Undiagnosed sleep disorders: Sleep apnea and other nighttime breathing issues affect 10-20% of children, yet 90% of cases go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often being confused with ADHD or other behavioural issues.-9The long-term consequences of poor sleep: Lack of restorative sleep leads to irritability, anxiety, weight gain, frequent illness, and even high blood pressure. Untreated sleep disorders in childhood can persist into adulthood.-Breathing awareness: By paying closer attention to our breathing patterns, especially in children, we can prevent a range of health complications and enhance overall well-being. In this "Best of Summer Series" episode, host Shannon Urquiola talks about the common challenge of perseveration in children on the autism spectrum. Perseveration, or getting stuck on a particular behavior, activity, or thought, can be a source of frustration for both parents and children. Shannon explores the reasons behind this phenomenon, emphasizing the weak executive functions in the frontal cortex of the brain that often contribute to the difficulty in shifting focus. Drawing from personal experiences and expert advice, the episode provides practical strategies for parents. From using warnings and visual timers to creating concrete endings and incorporating oneself into the child's activity, Shannon shares actionable tips for easing transitions. The episode highlights the importance of understanding that perseveration is a neurological challenge, requiring gentle assistance rather than demanding an immediate stop. Furthermore, Shannon addresses the emotional toll perseveration can take on parents and offers self-care strategies. The episode closes with a message of support, reminding listeners that they are not alone in facing these challenges and encouraging a sense of community strength.
