In this episode, I dive into the concept of embodying loving limits: a term I coined to describe the process which is integral to the Aware Parenting approach created by Aletha Solter, PhD. I share my experiences and challenges that I faced in practicing loving limits, both with my daughter and son. I also emphasise how the practice of loving limits contrasts with typical authoritarian or permissive parenting models. I highlight the nuanced understanding and deep inner work required to truly embody this practice, sharing insights from my own journey. Throughout, I highlight the profound influence loving limits can have for children, their parents, and the relationship between the two of them. Welcome back to another episode in the series about embracing imperfection in Aware Parenting. In this powerful episode, Danni Willow and I share some reflections from our recent extraordinary Aware Parenting Retreat about the truths of motherhood and how embracing imperfection as mothers can be both liberating and deeply healing. We talk about the mother wound and sisterhood wound, two often unspoken pains that show up in our longing for connection, in our guilt, and in the quiet ache for holding and unconditional love. Whether it's the absence of nurturing we craved from our own mothers or the comparison, competition, hurt and disconnection that can arise between women, these wounds carry a weight that many mothers silently bear and that make embracing our imperfection harder. We share the transformative power of what unfolded on our retreat and how being vulnerable together with other women, and being deeply held supports transformation and healing. If you've ever felt like you're not enough, or if you've longed for a kind of mothering or sisterhood that you didn't receive, this episode will speak to your heart. It's an invitation to step into compassion, find connection and holding and offer yourself radical acceptance. We talk about the power of receiving deep support to bring more closeness, connection and capacity within our families and the need for mothers to be held in order to mother. Episode 229: Why crying is so important

The Aware Parenting Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 48:37

In this episode, I talk about why I believe crying is so important in children (from an Aware Parenting perspective) and for adults (from a Marion Method perspective). I emphasise that in Aware Parenting, crying is a vital natural healing response for children, enabling them to release stress and trauma. I connect emotional disconnection in adults to societal issues and suggest that many violent and harmful behaviours stem from unexpressed grief and rage as well as from a sense of disconnection. I draw parallels between individual emotional health and historical/cultural disconnections caused by colonisation, and I track that colonisation back, step by step. I recommend the movie, 'Schooling the World: The white man's last burden", and mention scenes from the film that highlight what I'm talking about. By supporting children in feeling and expressing their feelings, parents can help their children feel more, care more, and make more of a difference in the world. By receiving support ourselves as parents to feel more, we can also be a part of making a difference in the world. I conclude by inviting parents to see their children's tears as part of a broader context of healing and connection, not only for themselves, but also for their community and world. In this episode of the Aware Parenting Podcast, which is part of the Foundations of Aware Parenting series, I discuss separation anxiety. I delve into the history and current usage of the term and I contrast Aware Parenting's understanding of separation anxiety with Classical Attachment Parenting's understanding. I explore various causes of separation anxiety, including developmental stages, a need for safety, accumulated feelings, past unhealed separation trauma, and the parent's own past unhealed separation trauma. I also emphasise the effect of cultural beliefs on the understanding of separation anxiety and, as always, I offer lots of compassion to parents and children who are experiencing separation anxiety. In the episode, Alex shares about the conversation where she asked about tantrums and her dear friend shared about Aware Parenting. Then we had a lovely conversation about attachment play. Alex talks about her grandmother has an incredible ability to play with children, and until learning about attachment play, she didn't think she'd also be able to do that. We talk about how Aware Parenting supports children, parents, and the relationship between the two throughout the tween and teen years. Alex shares about how attachment play helped her son prepare for some surgeries he had, as well as for healing afterwards. She also explains how Miles healed from fear he felt before performances playing the trumpet using attachment play and listening to feelings. She also talks about how doing attachment play helped Miles be willing to eat more vegetables, but also how important it is to not use attachment play to try to get children to do what we want them to. She gives an example of how she trusted his food choices. We also talk about how helpful attachment play is for children and teens learning new things, and how both nonsense play and power-reversal games are so helpful. Alex shares about the power of attachment play when tweens are going through adolescence. She also offers games to play for when we're feeling exhausted, and also for when our big feelings are starting to bubble up. I'm so delighted that Carly Facius has returned to the podcast for the 6th time. She was also on episodes 149, 154, 159, 199, and 202. Carly is a mother of three, Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, holds a Master of Primary Maternity Care, and is an Aware Parenting instructor. Carly shares about the very beginning of her journey to becoming an Aware Parenting instructor, which was when her Mum asked her to watch her brother, who would hold his breath. This was the beginning of her long journey of deeply observing babies. She was also deeply influenced by her mum, who was a midwife, and all the conversations about birth that she had with her mum whilst growing up. Carly shares about her experience travelling the world, and how that helped her later journey, including as an Aware Parenting instructor, and then about her experiences training to be a midwife. We talk about how parents are taught to respond to babies, and what a powerful effect that that can have. Carly shares about how observing how people in Indonesia talk to babies also had a powerful effect on her. We also talk about our shared experience of presence with our babies. Carly talks about how Aware Parenting has helped her to get to know herself in ways that she didn't before, and how it's been an important part of her becoming herself. We also talk about how our own parenting experiences are so key in our journey as Aware Parenting instructors. Carly says "becoming an Aware Parenting instructor is an investment in your journey to becoming yourself." I'm so delighted to welcome on to the podcast Daniela Ekman, who is an Aware Parenting instructor and birthkeeper. Daniela shares about how she uses a lot of ancestral traditions and wisdom from South America in her work as a birthkeeper. She is from Venezuela. Daniela shares about her calling to become a birthkeeper, and the deep connection that she has with babies. This deep connection with babies is also what called her to become an Aware Parenting instructor. She shares about how much babies are affected by their experiences. We talk about how Aware Parenting helps babies stay connected with their innate presence. Daniela shares about experiences of reading my Inner Loving Presence cards, and how she feels when she does. She also talks about how she came across Aware Parenting when her first daughter was eight months old, when she was waking up many times at night. She shares about all the painful feelings and thoughts that she had when her daughter started to cry, before she found Aware Parenting. Daniela shares about how she could see the changes in her daughter almost immediately after starting to practice Aware Parenting. She was more relaxed and slept for longer periods. Daniela also shares how transformative Aware Parenting has been for her, such as in how she relates to crying and all feelings. She also explains the differences she experienced in practicing Aware Parenting from when her first daughter was 8 months old, and with her second daughter from birth. This includes how healing it has been for her first daughter, seeing Daniela listening to her sister's feelings as a baby. Daniela talks about how she first decided that she wanted to become an Aware Parenting instructor. We talk about how palpable the difference is when a baby or toddler has been brought up with Aware Parenting (whilst also reminding listeners that it's never too late to start!) She shares about what she observes in the families she works with, and in the Aware Parenting playgroup that she facilitates. We also share together about the effects of community support such as mother and baby groups and playgroups, and what a difference it makes when practicing Aware Parenting. We also talk about how being an Aware Parenting instructor is a continual learning journey. We'd also love to say, before you listen, that Katie shares some of her experiences during and after giving birth that were extremely traumatic, so please listen in to yourself and whether you are willing to listen, or continue listening. After Katie shares about those traumatic events, she then talks about (the descriptions are in her own words): - My story of discovering Aware Parenting and then The Marion Method - My initial uncomfortable thoughts/feelings/sensations in reaction to The Marion Method terminology - My realisation of how guilt/shame/judgement are designed to block the grieving process and perpetuate cultural conditioning - My rejection of the concepts of regulation, dysregulation, and window of tolerance - My experience of how hard/confronting/agonising I can find the re-parenting and re-culturing process, how it is in no way linear for me, YET how it has given me access to hope/joy/love/connection/laughter when I was unquestionably convinced that I was shackled to a life sentence of self loathing in relation to how my motherhood journey began. I found this to be an incredibly moving and powerful podcast, offering possibility for those parents who are going through deeply painful times at the moment, recognition for those who have gone through traumatic events in their birthing and parenting, and compassion for all of us. In this episode, I talk about the process of change from Marion Method perspective, and how getting freer from Disconnected Domination Culture conditioning, and instead embracing lovingness and willingness, supports us to say no to what we don't want, and yes to what we do want. I share about the difference between wanting and willing, and not wanting and not being willing, about the gifts of jealousy, and about why we might be scared to have, do, or be what we really want. I include the metaphor of having one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake, and how we can support ourselves to know that we are safe while having, doing, or being what we really want. I love this episode with Caitlyn Jaspers, who has been doing mentoring with me for the last 4 months. Caitlyn starts off sharing her journey with Aware Parenting, which started when her 4-month-old son was waking very frequently. Once she started practicing Aware Parenting, his sleep shifted. However, she then saw how much of an effect her own inner work, including her exploration of her control patterns, her willingness to have her needs met, and her having her feelings heard, affected her son's ability to freely express his emotions. I love how clearly Caitlyn shares the direct and tangible effects of doing her own de-conditioning so she has been more and more willing to have her own needs met. Linde talks about all kinds of topics in this episode, including reclaiming the beauty of our needs as parents. However, it's the stories she tells half way through the episode that brought us both to tears. She shares about what happened for her after being a beta reader of my latest book, 'All of Your Feelings are Welcome', and the incredible but very subtle and nuanced shifts she made in her presence as a parent, which led to some deeply moving and transformational effects. The stories were in response to aggression, which can be the hardest place for us as parents to embody this quality of loving but powerful presence, when our child is lashing out at us, their sibling, or another child. I'd love to emphasise again that this is NOT Aware Parenting. This reparenting series is based on The Marion Method. I came up with the concept and practice of the three types of feelings by integrating two philosophies: Aware Parenting, which includes what I call needs-feelings and healing-feelings. Nonviolent Communication, which includes what I call needs-feelings and thoughts-feelings. I'll explain more about this! But first, why is this important? Well, if we think that there is only one type of feeling, and the most apt response is the same to any feeling, we may miss the most apt response. In the episode, explain the three types of feelings in more detail, what they are caused by, and how to most aptly respond in the reparenting process. I'm so delighted to be starting the reparenting series. I'd love to make it very clear that this is NOT Aware Parenting. It's The Marion Method. However, it was profoundly influenced by Aware Parenting, and in some ways is like practicing Aware Parenting with ourselves. Aware Parenting of course includes the importance of honouring our own needs, having community, and listening to our own feelings, but does not include any particular processes – beyond prompts for inner reflection about our childhood and the importance of meeting our needs and expressing our feelings – about of how to do that. Just as the sleep series went alongside me editing my 'Sound Sleep and Secure Attachment with Aware Parenting' book, this series goes with my next book, 'All of Your Feelings are Welcome', which is a combination of The Marion Method and Aware Parenting, and is designed to support reparenting so that we can more easily practice Aware Parenting. This reparenting series also goes alongside the publishing of my oracle cards, which also include inner loving phrases, and a live round of my Inner Loving Presence Process Course, which is a part of The Marion Method. In this episode, I share about my journey as a researcher in infant development, and psychotherapist, and how I saw that practicing Aware Parenting was far more effective than waiting until adulthood and having therapy. However, in my own journey of mothering, and which I saw replicated when I became an Aware Parenting instructor nearly twenty years ago, I was seeing all the ways in which mothers were tending to their children in terms of the three aspects of Aware Parenting, but ignoring their own needs, judging themselves and their parenting, and being harsh with themselves when their own feelings from the past came up to be healed. So I developed the Inner Loving Presences and Inner Loving Presence Process work, which is the Love part of The Marion Method. There is also Will work and Conversations with Life in The Marion Method too. This work was not only Inspired by Aware Parenting. It was also influenced by Nonviolent Communication, by Marshall Rosenberg, Psychosynthesis by Roberto Assagioli (including the sub-personalities work) and The Field Project by Philip Golabuk. In the episode, I share about how the Inner Loving Presences and Inner Loving Presence Process work and the Will and Willingness work work with reparenting. In this episode, we share about Aware Parenting, and also about The Marion Method for reparenting. Michael includes perspectives from Tai Chi and from counselling adults. Also in this episode, there is more than the usual background noise of birds singing and dogs snoring. I'm sending love to any feelings that you might feel when you hear those noises. (When I experimented with taking those sounds out, all the life energy in our voices also went, so I left them in!) I invite you to experiment with being present with the sounds while you listen to our voices. Michael shares about his experience of being a part of the Mythopoetic Mens Movement in London in the 90s, and how it helped him practice Aware Parenting. We talk about how grief, crying, and love are interconnected, and how our capacity to cry and to grieve deeply affect our capacity to feel and offer love. I share about The Marion Method perspective of the three types of feelings, and why this is particularly important for adults, and how crying as a result of ongoing harsh thoughts-feelings is not actually healing. We talk about the research process of Aware Parenting, and listening to, and trusting, ourselves as well as our babies or children. Michael shares about his most recent experience doing more counselling training, and how that deepened his understanding of presence, and what presence people need from others in order to experience being safe to feel and express their feelings. Michael talks about the experience of how some dads can believe that being with children is tedious and boring, and how those thoughts and experiences can be transformed. We discuss the shift that can happen from listening to our baby or child's feelings being exhausting, to the experience of us increasingly being able to be present, and the experience being fulfilling and energising. We talk about how Aware Parenting helps our children be more present than us, but also how the reparenting journey helps us become more present. Please note, as a content warning, that Michael shares about an experience of a dangerous experience he had with other men, starting at 1 minute and 8 seconds. As this very long sleep series draws to a close, in this episode, I share some quick sleep suggestions for parents of a baby, toddler, child, or teen. Babies, children, and teens need to be both tired and relaxed to sleep restfully. Relaxation is created in two ways: ~ through a sense of safety (which is met by having closeness, especially in the early years), ~ and by releasing any pent-up painful feelings that naturally bubble to the surface to be expressed when they are tired. If children don't feel safe, they won't feel relaxed, and will need to dissociate to go to sleep. If children have accumulated painful feelings bubbling to the surface that aren't released, they won't feel relaxed, and will need to dissociate to go to sleep. If they dissociate to fall asleep, the sleep is not likely to be restful. I'm so excited to tell you that the third book in my trilogy of Aware Parenting books – Sound Sleep and Secure Attachment with Aware Parenting – is out, and it's already a bestseller in both paperback and Kindle editions! I'm so delighted that Carly Facius has returned to the podcast for the 4th time. She was also on episodes 149, 154, and 159. Carly is a mother of three, Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, holds a Master of Primary Maternity Care, and is an Aware Parenting instructor. Carly starts off by sharing her own journey with sleep with her first baby, and how surprised she was that after being so connected with her intuition and trusting her body and baby for the pregnancy and birth and for the first four months, that for a week, she started following the concept of sleep windows. Living in Indonesia, with an Indonesian husband, all around her she saw something very different to the practices she'd read about online of helping babies sleep according to the clock. She really didn't enjoy that week. The intensity of the focus on sleep took her away from being present with her baby, and led her to think that there was something wrong with what she was doing, and that there was something wrong with her baby. After that week, she shifted her practice entirely, and felt so much more relaxed. She saw babies and children sleeping everywhere and anywhere in Indonesia and it made so much sense that the routine she'd created in that week wasn't helpful at all. We talk about co-sleeping, and 'bedtimes', and how common it is in a very high percentage of the world's population for babies and children to co-sleep and for there not to be early bedtimes. We also talk about how Aware Parenting makes it possible for everyone in the family to share a bed together, and to all sleep restfully, without the baby or child moving around restlessly, or needing to be in a particular position, eg. under a parent's arm or on top of the parent. She talks about what a difference it made for her when she shifted from Classical Attachment Parenting to Aware Parenting when her son was 18 months old, including her partner being able to support their son to go to sleep. Carly shares about her experience of listening to her third child's feelings since birth has made, especially on his sleep, including while consistently travelling. He slept peacefully, even with noise around, which was very different to tiptoeing away when her first baby was sleeping. She also enjoyed the freedom of her partner being able to support their baby to go to sleep right from early on. Carly also talks about her own experience of working with parents from all around the world and from a wide variety of parenting beliefs and practices, including from families who had been to sleep consultants prior, and how she supported to find ways that resonated with them in relation to sleep. We talk about the importance of parents listening in to their own yeses and noes in terms of what resonates with them about sleep theories and practices. Carly shares about the loveliness of knowing that with Aware Parenting, whatever we've done in the past, we can help our babies heal, and we can also heal from past experiences. She shares how her perspective on bedtimes has completely changed, and how she invites parents to focus on their own sleep. She says, "everyone's rested in my family." I'm so delighted that Belynda Smith is back on the podcast, after she interviewed me about The Emotional Life of Babies in episode 151. Belynda is an Aware Parenting instructor and a Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor. She is also the Editor of my trilogy of books. In this episode, Belynda shares about her passion for – and deep experience with – the vital importance of receiving lots of listening if we are wanting to listen to our children's feelings. Belynda shares about the details of Listening Partnerships, which is a term from Hand in Hand Parenting and which offers specific parameters to create deeper safety and healing. Belynda shares about her experience of coming to Hand in Hand Parenting when her children were in early childhood, after experiencing both frequent night waking (every 40 minutes) and, once her second child was born, her own unexpressed feelings starting to bubble up. She shares the breakthrough experiences she had when she first came across Hand in Hand Parenting, and when she had her first session with a Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor and Trainer, Ann Hefferan, which inspired her to go on and become a Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor herself. Belynda shares about the next part of her journey, and discovering Aware Parenting. She also talks about the process of having lots of LP support when editing the books. She shares about her experience of Aware Parenting and sleep and her teens, and the subtle difference between Hand in Hand Parenting and Aware Parenting with sleep. We also discuss what we experience is the vital foundation in parenting. Belynda has a new free offering on play coming up. She also has a monthly online listening circle and offers 1:1 Aware Parenting support. I'm so delighted that Kim Cousins came back on the podcast again. Kim was on episode 136 and 176 and I so highly recommend listening to those episodes if you haven't already. Kim is an Aware Parenting instructor who used to work in a perinatal mental health unit and has an abundance of experience of working with mothers and babies and families in general. In this episode, she also shares her own experience with sleep as a mother, with experience of being taught sleep training, then moving to Classical Attachment Parenting, and then to Aware Parenting. We'd love to send so much compassion if you are feeling exhausted and desperate for sleep, and if you have used sleep training. Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of deep compassion for parents. Please check in with your willingness to listen to this episode, and reach out for listening support if it helps you connect with painful feelings. The focus on this episode is knowing that there really is a third choice, and that parents really don't need to choose between secure attachment and sleep. Kim shares about how when her daughter (who is now 8), was a baby, she slept very little in the day, and Kim had someone visit from a sleep centre to teach some sleep training. Kim shares about how painful the experience was, and how she didn't want to do it afterwards, and thought that she was a failure and that her daughter wasn't sleeping because she was not reading tiredness signs accurately or missing sleep windows. Kim shares about all the pressure and the lack of support that led to a diagnosis of postnatal depression and anxiety. Kim dived into understanding attachment theory, and when her son was born, she practiced Classical Attachment Parenting with him. When he was 12 months old, he was waking lots at night and she decided to do my sleep course. She listened to him crying in her arms for about 45 minutes to an hour and he slept through the whole night! Kim shares moving stories about supporting mothers to listen to their babies crying in arms, and what a difference it makes to receive that kind of support. Kim also talks about the importance of support, our own inner work, and lots more fascinating parts of listening to feelings and the relationship of that with sleep. We recorded this episode a few weeks ago. I'm so delighted to share this episode with Laura Pires Brammer. Laura is an Aware Parenting instructor in Germany, and she shares about her experience with Aware Parenting and sleep. She talks about the powerful connection she had with Aletha Solter's book 'The Aware Baby', and now she started to listen to her baby's healing-feelings after only reading a couple of pages. Laura explains so beautifully how she saw the differences in her daughter once she started practicing Aware Parenting – being more present during the day, more relaxed while sleeping, and sleeping for longer periods, as well as the beautiful connection and eye contact between the two of them. Laura then shares about the process of increasing her understanding of Aware Parenting and embodying the practices more and more. Laura talks about the deep inner work that Aware Parenting invited her to do, as is common for most of us practicing this way of parenting. She shares about the contrast between feeling the power of having this information, and the powerlessness of at times not knowing how to put it into practice. We then talk about now common it is that, once we start practicing Aware Parenting, our own unexpressed feelings from our own childhood come bubbling up to be heard. Laura talks about how a lot of her feelings bubbled up in the night time, and how, as a result, she saw improvements in her own sleep. We talk about the difference in ourselves between the sleep after crying or laughing, and the sleep after distracting and dissociating. Laura sharrd how different her experience was with sleep and listening to feelings with her second born daughter. I so highly recommend Laura's beautiful work. She works in English, German, and Dutch. You can find her on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/laura.rpb and Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/laurapiresbrammer/ She has an offer called Magical Nights, for mothers with babies, who want to apply Aware Parenting to their sleep journey. She also has offerings for parents with Corinne Sprecher, another Aware Parenting instructor, about practicing and embodying Aware Parenting.

In another episode in the second sleep series, I share about my own experiences with sleep as a mother. I talk about the way I changed thinking about sleep before becoming a mother. I share about how I helped my daughter sleep for longer chunks when she was about 9 months old. I tell the story of the two challenges I had with sleep - one when my daughter was a toddler, and one when my son was in his early teens, and why those were related to some nuances of Aware Parenting that I hadn't yet understood. I share about how Aware Parenting helped me respond to my own feelings differently when I woke up in the middle of the night. This is a special episode that was recorded three years ago and that was on my Psychospiritual Podcast, about Aware Parenting and homeschooling. If you know Chiara Rossetti and haven't heard the news yet, I invite you to pause and have a friend close before reading more..... ...... ...... ...... Chiara is no longer with us. If you knew her, I'm sending so much love to you, however you're feeling now. Chiara was an Aware Parenting instructor who lived and breathed Aware Parenting. She was an attachment play genius. I shared about her, the profound effect she had on the Aware Parenting community, and my friendship with her on my social media recently. She and her children had the most amazing Aware Parenting and natural learning journey. She supported so many parents with Aware Parenting and attachment play in particular. She supported so many Aware Parenting instructors. We had talked for years about creating an attachment play book some day, and had reconnected with that again recently. I am so deeply sad and will miss her so much. I felt so called to share this episode with you, where she shares about how she came across Aware Parenting (when her son was waking up every 45 minutes), and then talked about her journey with Aware Parenting and Natural Learning (this was part of a series of podcasts on AwP and homeschooling). She also shared about sleep, and teens. So much of what she said is so poignant. "I feel resentful lying next to my 4 year old to help her go to sleep and I also have a baby. What can I do?"
