In this episode I have a conversation with Marion Rose about her wonderful new best selling book Sound Sleep and Secure Attachment with Aware Parenting. Marion, who is a Level 2 Aware Parenting Instructor and the regional coordinator for Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, shares so much wisdom. She shares how to bring ourselves more compassion. She describes how we can interpret what their behaviour is telling us about how they are feeling and what they are needing. Marion shares the 3 ingredients that babies and children need for restful restorative sleep without having to dissociate; to feel tired, to feel safety (through connection and closeness) and to feel relaxed (through utilising their innate mechanisms to feel, express and release painful feelings). We talk about learning to deeply trust the innate wisdom of our children and their knowing of how to relax and what they need in order to feel safe. We talk about the immense value of doing our own inner work in order to be able to support our children. Marion also shares 2 of the beautiful stories from her book of what it feels like for a baby and for a teenager to experience our loving support. I highly recommend buying Marion's new book, available in paperback or on Kindle from Amazon. In this episode I have a conversation with Lavinia Brown. Lavinia is a trauma-informed psychodynamic coach who supports mamas to become the conscious parents they want to be through healing their inner child. Through acknowledging and integrating unprocessed pain from the past, overcoming unconscious patterns and learning how to accept, love themselves and assert healthy boundaries, mamas stop feeling ashamed, anxious, guilty and angry, and can show up as the authentic parent, partner and woman that they want to be, instead of who their primary caregivers thought they should be. Lavinia lives with her partner and 3 children in the UK. In this episode Lavinia shares how she came to do this work after feeling overwhelmed and desperate as a parent herself. She explains what an inner child is and how these younger parts of us show up during the course of our day-to-day life as parents, as partners and in many of the interactions and experiences that we have. We talk about how to connect with our inner child and explore what is coming up for us, going towards the feelings and then supporting the integration of those painful experiences so we can become freer from the activations of our inner child wounding. Welcome back to a new episode where I have a conversation with Leah McDermott. Leah is an unschooling advocate and mother of three. After over a decade spent in the world of education, two Masters of Education degrees, and multiple teaching certifications, Leah slowly began to realize that the way we are teaching our children in public schools went against everything that we knew to be true about learning acquisition and child development. Her passion for helping other children and families led to her developing a child-led learning curriculum, creating a supportive space online for parents, and opening Bridge Academy - a private umbrella school for homeschoolers, Leah continues her life's work of encouraging adults to unlearn what they've always believed to be true as they lean fully into trusting their children as natural, capable learners. Leah currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Brian, their three boys, and a collection of pets. In this episode we have a powerful conversation about some of the damaging long-term effects of schooling and the pressure that children often face at school. We share many of the benefits we have seen of supporting children to learn in their own way, in their own timing, relaxed and self-connected at home. We talk about cultivating trust in our children and dealing with the judgements and questions of others so that we can truly enjoy facilitating our children's learning at home. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss school trauma again. We talk about some of the visible and some of the invisible traumas that children experience at school, as well as the impact of the accumulated mini and major traumas that are part of each school day. We discuss how children often need to go into a dissociation nervous system response at school and how this then makes it difficult for many of us to remember and really understand just how traumatic school was or to see the conditioning, denial or social acceptance that school is fine. We talk about the long-term impact on us as adults of these traumas and the effect on our psychological and physical health of being in a chronic stressed state. We share about the adultism that is such a strong part of our culture, where adults get to decide and power-over children and where children's voice, opinions, needs and desires are overlooked and not honoured. The Aware Parenting and Natural Learning Podcast

In this episode, we talk about school trauma - what it is, how it happens, and how institutionalised it is. We share about the fight/flight/freeze response and how Aware Parenting understands that we also have an innate healing response to move out of those states, which are often not supported in schools. We include the third principle of Aware Parenting - both the prevention of stress and trauma as well as the healing from it. We discuss the bigger cultural shift we are inviting, rather than simply inviting everyone to homeschool. Joss shares her experience of being in boarding school from the age of 8, and the four main areas of trauma that happen in many schools. We talk about how vial it is for us as adults to become more comfortable with feeling and expressing our feelings again. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss the challenges of juggling everything in life by ourselves when we are pratising Aware Parenting and Natural Learning. We share how normal it is to find it really difficult to do work, to support our children's learning and to meet all the other demands of life, and to do so in isolation in our nuclear families in this culture. We share many of the powerful things that we have found to support ourselves to make it possible to thrive in our families, including: deconditioning ourselves, choosing to put down some balls, freeing ourselves from coercion and guilt and “shoulds”, organising our work around the other needs and priorities of our lives, reaching out for emotional and practical support and community from others on this path, and not comparing ourselves and our families to others. We share the strategies that we have found most helpful on this journey. This episode title comes from a quote from Gabor Maté: "It is completely unnatural for kids to be separated from their parents for the whole day." In this episode, we talk about how The Disconnected Domination culture peddles the lie that babies and children need to be separated from their parents at an early age in order to become independent. We shared about how our own early experiences of separation before we were ready were traumatic, and how that opened our eyes to what we wanted and didn't want for our own children in terms of connection, attachment and separation. We talked about how this belief in the importance of early separation is passed on through shaming, judgment and unhealed trauma. We discussed why attachment-style parenting is the first of three aspects of Aware Parenting, and how we supported our children to be securely attached. The learning process is enhanced when parents and teachers: - show acceptance and love while giving children good quality attention - Use encouragement rather than praise, rewards or criticism - Have age-appropriate expectations (neither too high not too low) - Use a non-punitive approach to discipline - Encourage children to ask questions and be independent thinkers - Accept children's painful emotions and allow them to cry. The learning process is enhanced when children are allowed to release painful emotions through the natural healing mechanisms of play, laughter, and crying. In the episode, we talk about sources of stress and trauma in traditional school environments, the hyperarousal or dissociation that can occur as a result, and the effect that has on a child's openness and spaciousness for learning. Welcome back to another episode of the Aware Parenting and Natural Learning podcast. In this episode we discuss number 9 of Aletha Solter's Principles of Learning, about screens and learning. We start by inviting people to bring compassion to this tricky aspect of parenting and learning and to put down any judgement, shame or guilt about screens. We acknowledge how difficult it is to parent in our nuclear families without the support we are designed to need and how screens can often make parenting easier. We discuss the many beneficial ways that screens impact our lives and our children's lives and discuss how we have navigated screen use to meet everyone's needs. We offer reassurance about how to stay connected and trusting around screens and how to offer loving limits when screens become a control pattern for our children. We share the importance of getting support and listening for ourselves as we find ways to manage these enticing instruments in a way that suits our unique individual families. Whether your children are at school or not, this episode will support you to bring more compassion and clarity around screens to yourself and your children. In this episode, we discuss the ways in which the Disconnected Domination Culture, and many schools, value particular types of learning style above others, and the effect that has on children whose key learning styles aren't those. These learning styles are based on different forms of intelligence and include: logical, mathematical, verbal, visual, spatial, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. We talk about the de-conditioning process we've each been on to come to value all forms of learning equally, and how we see that in our own children. #019 Five simple and unexpected ways to help your child sleep well in their own bed

Parenting With Pam

When I first became a mum, I held a cultural belief that bedsharing was wrong / dangerous etc. After 3 days of sleep deprivation, I was bedsharing and continued to bed share for several years. There are lots of advantages to bed-sharing But as your child grows you might not enjoy bed sharing any more for many reasons You can't sleep Child is noisy or moves around a lot You want some personal space You just want to say goodnight and be on your own until morning You can transition your child to sleeping on their own in their own bed all night without doing them emotional harm. I'm talking about children over the age of 1 years old. I think under this age they need a lot of closeness, attention, on-demand feeding etc. Different for every child - high needs, premature, traumatic birth, medical issues, stress in the family - they might benefit from extra closeness There isn't a right age or a right time - that is your decision - best to check in with yourself - are you getting resentful, check in with your child. Are they very rigid? It is ok to put your need for sleep first - weeks, months and years of disturbed sleep take their toll. By paying attention to your own needs you can show up in the best way possible as a parent You could co-sleep for years because that's what you think your child needs to feel loved and secure but be resentful and worn out Or maybe your child has been sleeping in their own bed for a while but bedtime is a nightmare, or they come into you in the middle of the night. It is possible to support your child to sleep all night on their own. Will they be upset about it? Yes!! That is ok If they are upset it means they have some big feelings about separation that they're holding on to. In fact, you can help them let go of these feelings, support them to have the confidence to sleep all night I love what Marion Rose, Aware Parenting says that Children need 3 things to sleep well: Tired Connected Relaxed Over the course of days, weeks, months, children experience all kinds of feelings - fear, disappointment, frustration etc. All those feelings get packed away in their emotional backpack and that can get in the way of them feeling relaxed enough to sleep. If we can listen to those feelings of upset whenever we can, that is going to help our children let go of emotional tension and be relaxed enough to sleep well. Children can become very rigid in their bedtime routines and that is a way for them to keep the emotional backpack closed up tight But the thing is, that makes it harder for them to sleep. So they might insist that you read a certain number of stories, then you have to sing a song, then rub their back. They must have their special teddy or their blanky etc etc. So what can happen is we play along with this extravagant system in the hope they will get to sleep when what they might actually need is for us to set a limit on some of those things, that will allow them to actually feel their feelings instead of hiding them away in increasingly difficult ways. 5 tips to support your child to sleep well. Propose a change in the bedtime routine Listen to feelings Get emotional support yourself It's ok not to be consistent - take a break when you need to and pick it up again Balance it all with lots of connection - special time, physical play Thanks for joining me. In this episode, we talk about attachment play, which is a term coined by Aletha Solter, Ph.D. to describe the 9 types of play that can be used to help children cooperate, feel connected, heal from painful past experiences, release fear and powerlessness, and express feelings that otherwise lead to hitting, not sleeping and repressing feelings. We explain how attachment play works, why it's the opposite of behaviourism, how we can use it to help children cooperate, and we give examples of how it can be used in really specific ways.
