A Note from Jacob: If you or someone you know are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988. It is a pleasure to welcome singer and actress Marla Mase to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. A native New Yorker, Marla was born in Brooklyn and raised in Canarsie. At 18, she moved to Tribeca, where she lived for 32 years, raised her two children, and founded PARTYpoopers/partySWANK, one of NYC's premier event planning companies. In addition to her entrepreneurial success, Marla is a versatile artist—an accomplished writer, performer, recording artist, and the COO of Brooklyn-based True Groove Records. She recently returned from her third whirlwind tour of the UK this year, promoting her eighth and ninth album releases, The Fine Art of Pissing in the Bushes and Infinite They Went (vinyl). She is touring Being Somebody, a show she co-wrote and performs alongside her 88-year-old father, Dr. Howard Mase, to sold-out audiences across the East Coast. Her other theatrical works have been featured at prestigious venues such as La MaMa ETC, NYC SummerStage, NJPAC, SXSW, and Nuyorican Poets Café. Marla Mase is also the founder of The Lael Project. Lael, a talented singer and graduate of the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music Popular Music Program, had struggled with depression, anorexia, and suicidal thoughts from a young age. Despite her battles, she chose to help others, working at a treatment center in Los Angeles for individuals suffering from mental illness. Lael's empathy and understanding profoundly impacted those she worked with, many of whom have shared with Marla how her daughter saved their lives. “After she died, I received numerous emails, texts, and calls from residents who told me that Lael was the reason they were alive today,” Marla recounted. “Lael was not a therapist per se, but they felt she understood what they were going through better than anyone else.” Marla's mission now is to honor Lael's legacy by using her music to help others recognize the signs of suicide and seek help. The Lael Project is a two-volume album featuring both original songs and covers recorded by Lael during her brief but impactful music career. The project features re-mixes, never-before-released material, live recordings dating back to her pre-teen years and remastered versions of her two existing albums, Burden to Bear (2013) and Life in Color (2015). Scheduled for release in 2025 under Brooklyn's True Groove Records, The Lael Project aims to open conversations about mental illness and break the stigma around suicide. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Marla Mase discussed the stories behind several of her songs, including “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick,” “Falling Sideways,” and “All Fall Short.” She also discussed how you can get involved with the Lael Project.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Happy New Year's everyone. We're a month late but back to work. In this episode, we discuss obviously the biggest entertainment event of the year so far. Didn't really speak about the Eagles, but we did speak about the Kendrick halftime show. Everybody gave their own critiques, pros cons, etc. We also delve into what other critics had to say about it and messaging within entertainment. We also delve into Kanye West recent Twitter rants, which led to an interesting debate about people falling for his antics. Jokes as usual. Consistency is key so I'm trying not to miss any more weeks. Enjoy this episode please. Don't forget to like and subscribe and all that other stuff that streamers tell you to do

The battle that just keeps on giving Content. In today's episode I'm joined by Bruce and Lael and Dula momentarily to talk about the Kendrick Lamar and Aubrey Drake Graham saga part infinity. We start off by reviewing Kendrick Lamar‘s latest album GNX and give our thoughts on the album and we get into the Lawsuit or should we say the petitions that have been started this week by Drake. Quick episode some good opinions and jokes of course. Enjoy.
This week, I talk to Lael Weinberger about the doctrine of church autonomy—what it is and, more importantly, where it came from. Lael has written an excellent paper on the origins of church autonomy (here), as well as put to practice his musings in a recent amicus brief he filed in the D.C. Circuit in the case of O'Connell v. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (here). After we spent some time digging into Lael's past, we got to business discussing his paper and brief. Some of the topics we discussed included the definition and scope of church autonomy, the jurisdictional nature of this topic as it relates to the state and the church, the history of its development in the 19th century, and much more. Lael Weinberger is an attorney and legal scholar. He currently works of Gibson Dunn in Washington, D.C. (bio), and serves as a nonresident fellow at Stanford Law (bio). In the past, he clerked for Justice Neil Gorsuch on the United States Supreme Court, Judge Frank Easterbrook on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and Chief Justice Daniel Eismann on the Idaho Supreme Court. He earned a law degree with high honors from the University of Chicago Law School. He also holds a PhD in history from the University of Chicago, with a focus on American legal history. Cross & Gavel is a production of CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY. The episode was produced by Josh Deng, with music from Vexento.
In today's episode I am joined by Bruce and Lael discussing the Jake Paul Tyson fight for starters. We then delve into an impromptu battle on politics the presidency Leo trying to be into my bravely important of voting and huge back-and-forth about politics. Then finish off with an array of jokes, insults, etc. Great back-and-forth. Enjoy.

Lael Wilcox is an ultra-endurance cyclist and racer, and she recently set a women's Guinness World Record for fastest time cycling around the world. The trip was 18,000 miles long and it took her 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes to complete. She averaged 166 miles a day. And with the help of some friends, she planned her own route. She wanted it to include the kind of riding she likes to do, which is a lot of climbing in the mountains. It's slower and it's harder, but it's the riding that inspires her. Her route was intense, rewarding and challenging. She was especially grateful for finishing without any injuries. Considering how much road Lael covered, staying safe around vehicles was among her top priorities because regardless of what happens, her main goals are to always stay safe and to finish regardless of her standing. She says that each race is an opportunity to prove something to herself. Sometimes that's overcoming her fear of the route — like with cycling around the world and the Iditarod Trail. Other times it's about being capable of doing these increasingly long and difficult rides. Her desire to chase these rides, these proving grounds, is all-consuming. To the point that when she finds herself thinking about them, she stops eating or she stops talking to focus on the idea and her intent. She imagines it all fitting together like a puzzle — every piece is important and it all fits together to form a bigger picture. Sometimes that involves spontaneity — she loves that. Adjusting to weather, keeping an eye out for places to sleep, seeing wildlife, meeting new people, experiencing other cultures and visiting new places.

In episode 72 of The Road to Wisdom Podcast, Chloe and Keshia chat with Lael Stone for another parenting chat. If you haven't listened to our first episode with Lael its definitely worth going back and tuning in. Lael Stone is an Australian Speaker, Educator and Author who's passion is supporting parents to understand their children, helping adults process their own childhood trauma and creating education systems that value emotional awareness. Everything is based on one fundamental principle – connection and compassion. The purpose of her work is to help all humans understand themselves better and be inspired to live the life they desire. In this episode we went in a little hot headed and wanting to question some of the styles of parenting that we are seeing in our community who tout "Gentle Parenting" we often see things unfold in the community and wonder if its the right or wrong way to do things and if there are consequences for doing so. Lael is so grounded and speaks with conviction when it comes to gentle parenting and although we wanted to break down some of the negative behaviours we see, this chat really did bring us back to the true meaning of what it shouldlook like when implementing this type of parenting correctly. On this episode, I take my new ebike on its first shakedown ride to test its capabilities, from battery life to chain tension to, well… does this thing work? It's a 40 mile round trip from my cabin in West Virginia to a campsite outside of Hancock, MD on the C&O towpath complete with terrain, headwinds, hills and riverside overnight! Housekeeping Lael Wilcox's ride is weeks old now but shout out to listener and former guest Cyrus Fairivar for not only meeting with Lael, but getting an unnamed shout out on her pod! Live Show announcement! Friday December 6 at 9pm ET/6pm PT - topics TBA, and of course it'll be the pod for the following week if you can't make it live. Links and more at pedalshift.net/live. eBike Project - Shakedown Ride Bike Setup & Preparation: • Fully charged battery, loaded with two rear panniers, and adjustments for the first e-bike adventure. • Changes from the last ride: added a stove for coffee and packed some food from Maria's Taqueria. Ride Experience: • Initial observations on battery performance: The e-bike flattened the hills, averaging around 20-25 mph with minimal battery usage. • Headwind and hill performance: Noted how the pedal assist (at level 4 and 5) made hills easier and allowed for faster cruising speeds. Comfort Adjustments: • Noted some tingling in the hands and plans to possibly add bar ends or horns for a better grip. • A potential move to a more upright riding position, requiring cabling adjustments. Battery Management: • Discussed the range and recharge performance, observing that the battery was only down 25% after 20 miles of riding, even with heavy pedal assist. • Insights on ideal battery storage and how the e-bike's range matched expectations. Camp Setup: • Arrived at camp and shared thoughts on the bike's potential for longer tours, with plenty of battery for return rides. • Reflections on camping alone and observations on trail conditions and other cyclists. The Ride Back: • Further testing of the battery on uphill sections, confirming impressive performance with ample pedal assist. • Final reflections on e-bike touring possibilities, noting a vastly improved return ride compared to previous acoustic bike tours. In September 2024, Lael Wilcox rolled into Chicago completing a three month, 18000 mile odyssey. Lael had just broken the world record for circumnavigating the globe, breaking the previous best time by more than two weeks. This isn't the first time the Alaskan native has set a new bar for others to meet. She's twice been the fastest finisher at the Tour Divide - racing from Banff in Canada to Antelope Wells in New Mexico and beat everyone, including to the men in the TransAm bike race from Oregon to Virginia. But Lael is more than just her record breaking feats, she's now one of the biggest names in her sport, and is using her platform to get more women and girls into the sport. Lael Atkinson, a recovery coach, joins Abbie to share their experiences with disordered eating, alcohol, and body image, how these issues have intersected with queerness, and other manifestations of these coping tools in their life. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP This week on Life in the Peloton, we've got Lael Wilcox back on the pod. As many of you know, Lael has just become the Guinness World Record holder for cycling around the world. She rode an incredible 29,000 kilometers starting from Chicago, circumnavigating the globe in 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes. I was so excited to get Lael back on the pod this week. I loved following her journey around the world through her podcasts and videos. Lael is full of energy, and what really drew me into this adventure was how she managed to make something so difficult and challenging sound like so much fun to manage to involve so many people. In our chat we spoke about what it was like to complete this adventure, to cross the globe, to ride in all these amazing places, and to do so with so many people joining in and following along. Her record attempt was followed by thousands of people, many of whom took the time to join her on the ride, offering gifts, places to stay, and help along the way, as well as the occasional diversion to improve her route! I was particularly keen to hear what it had been like riding across Australia, but I love to hear how people see my country and be able to see it through fresh perspectives. Lael actually reached out for a route, and I was really happy to be able to help out - at the last minute! And then to hear what this adventure had been like. Lael is so inspiring to talk to, her story and approach to riding her bike is fantastic, and we loved having her back on the pod. Take a listen to this episode—it's an amazing trip around the world, not to mention a new world record, and something that's inspiring for so many cyclists. Sit back, relax and enjoy. Financial literacy is especially important for college students, given the costs of taking on excessive student debt or selecting a school or major that isn't a good match. With a background in college admissions, recruitment, and finance, the University of Alaska's Lael Oldmixon shares insight on navigating today's costly higher education environment as she explores student loans, 529 savings accounts, and balancing academics with a job. Lael, the executive director of the Education Trust of Alaska, also discusses considerations in choosing the right college, making the most of aid and scholarships, and selecting the right type of student loan, if one is necessary. Among the pieces of advice she shares with podcast host John Bryson: If one is available, choose a subsidized loan over an unsubsidized one and try to avoid using a credit card to cover college costs.

The remix is in the rear view mirror, but as always I like to look back and discuss takeaways from every trip. On this edition, ten takeaways from the Oregon Coast Remix, celebrating ten years of the pod! Oregon Coast Remix Takeaways Don't Rush Tent Setup: I experienced a rough night at Bastendorf Beach County Campground due to improper tent setup. I had to get out of the tent at 12:30 AM to stake it properly, improving airflow and reducing internal condensation, which kept me awake as large drops of water hit my forehead. Every Trip Is Unique: James and I reflected on how each of our trips along the Oregon Coast differed. For example, I noted that every time I rode the coast, I used a different bike or setup, which made each journey distinct and memorable. Critical Importance of Food and Hydration: I discovered that my difficulties during the ride were due to dehydration, which affected my overall well-being. I shifted my focus from electrolytes to drinking more regular water, especially after noticing that my urine color indicated dehydration. Also, snacks like frosted mini-wheats helped manage my energy levels. Oregon Coast Weather's Dual Role: The Oregon Coast's weather was both a blessing and a challenge. For instance, while the cool, cloudy weather made for pleasant riding, the sudden appearance of the sun during our ride to Sunset Bay increased the difficulty, especially on long climbs. Companionship on the Road: I noted that riding with James added a positive social element to the trip. Despite generally preferring to ride solo, I found it enjoyable to share the experience and have someone to talk to about various topics along the way. Campground Upgrades: We stayed at a variety of campgrounds, each with different amenities. For instance, we found the new hiker-biker campsite at Jesse M. Honeyman State Park to be an improvement over previous experiences, with brand new facilities, flat tent sites, and a charging station. The Value of Good Sleep: At Honeyman State Park, despite the riding challenges, I noted how a good night's sleep helped me recover, emphasizing how crucial rest is for endurance on multi-day tours. Adaptability to Changing Plans: The trip required constant adaptation, such as when we chose to stay at Bastendorf Beach County Park instead of Sunset Bay. This change was partly due to past negative experiences at Sunset Bay and partly because we discovered Bastendorf had amenities we preferred. Maintaining a Positive Attitude: Despite the physical and logistical challenges, James and I remained positive, often joking about the difficulties and focusing on the highlights of the trip, such as the beautiful weather and the enjoyable ride through Bandon. Where Are the Cyclists?: James and I are still pretty puzzled about the lack of cyclist encounters on the entire ride. We talked about some of the theories, but none of them alone explain it. Having the camps to ourselves was great but if there's lower demand will the amenities go away? Programming note! Lael! Next week we enter a new era in bike adventures… remember that ebike project? Let's just say things escalated and you get to join me in the process! Also… we have two more bicycle adventures left this year alone and planning for the winter trip in early 2025 is locked in. Lots more to come!

Today, Hunter sat down with Duci Goncalves and Lael Chester to discuss how Massachusetts has started to reimagine how the criminal legal system treats emerging adults. As most of us remember, we didn't always make the best choices as children, and that questionable decision making didn't just improve the moment we turned 18. Yet in the criminal legal system, 18 is treated as a magic number where suddenly we assume you are a fully developed adult. With new brain science, we understand that 18 is not some magic number, and those between the ages of 18-25 still have a developing brain. To adhere to our understanding of modern brain science, Massachusetts is setting out on a new path to how the legal system handles emerging adult offenders.
