Cheryl Eriksen is an author, blogger, horse midwife, and eternal student of the horse-human connection. This is a episode on our series we call, Endurance off the Trail, where we look at other endurance sports and see what we can learn from them to make us better trail runners. In this episode, we talk about the endurance event that preceeded the Western States Endurance run, The Tevis Cup. This is a 100-mile endurance event that follows the Western States trail by man and their partner horse. We are honored to talk with a legend of this race, Hal Hall. Hal, an Auburn native has completed this race 32 times and holds the record for the most top-10 finishes (14) and three championships beginning at the age of 14! He has also competed internationally. Buckle up, DCOM fans, because this week we present a crossover event easily as momentous as Avengers Endgame: all three Lawrence brothers in a single movie! That movie is Jumping Ship, a canonical sequel to Horse Sense, which you'll remember was a story about a spoiled rich kid learning about honest down home folks who keep it real by owning horses and operating enormous ranches. What might surprise you is that this film contains almost no horses, and is instead a story about ancient temples and bloodthirsty pirates in Australia. Why? Your guess is as good as ours! The truth is that it is rare that client's come to us because they are in a good place. It is often that we cross people's paths in their worst and most vulnerable moments. Perhaps, this is in part why the 2018 Lawyer Well-Being study showed we didn't have a lot of it. Beyond that, we work in a profession where we are continually expected to hold space for others, our own emotions have to constantly be quashed, we are expected to work unheard of hours and always win. Add to that then going home where we have children, husbands, partners, pets, parents and others relying on us with needs and expectations – and well, as you know, there are just never enough hours in a day. But we still do it and succeed day after day. The problem is that though we may appear wildly successful on the outside, inside there is no space left for us. Having been a heavy duty trial lawyer for 34 years, I understand. Yee haw! Molly, Alan, and Max break down the absolute savagery of the young rancher Tommy as he enacts revenge on his cousin Michael after a bad trip to Beverly Hills in this Lawrence Brothers special.
What would happen if a spoiled Hollywood phoney had to spend a month working on a ranch in Montana? Probably not this, which is to say, the Disney Channel Original Movie Horse Sense. In Horse Sense, self-absorbed rich kid Michael is sent to work on his younger cousin Tommy's Montana ranch, to learn about hard work, and real people, and what dicks everyone in Montana is to self-absorbed rich kids named Michael. Will Michael learn that there's more to life than flashy cars and hot movie stars, like Kevin Costner? Will the family ranch be saved from financial ruin? Can Tommy prank his cousin so hard he dies from it? Let's find out! If you've watched Horse Sense and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. New episodes every other Monday!
