The Running Mullet Episode 178: Herstory Made at Eastern States

The Running Mullet

Eastern States 100 is over, and if you were watching the race unfold this weekend, you know there was a lot more going on than just who crossed the finish line first. Yes, Kaylee Frederick is the story. She didn't just win the women's race. She won Eastern States outright, becoming the first woman in race history to take the overall win. And she did it on a day when simply getting through 103 miles of Pennsylvania trail was an accomplishment all by itself. At just 21, Kaylee finished in 23:09, setting a new women's course record in the process. She crossed the line around 4:09 Sunday morning after more than 23 hours of running through the Pennsylvania heat and humidity. But we'll also talk about the rest of the race. Because 2026 Eastern States brought the heat and humidity, and then some more humidity for good measure. This is already one of the biggest 100-milers in the East: 103 miles, more than 20,000 feet of climbing, remote and technical trails, and long stretches where you really have to take care of yourself. Add in a hot, humid day and things get interesting pretty quickly. Effort that normally feels manageable started costing runners more. Cooling became critical. Hydration and electrolytes became a constant calculation. The climbs got harder, the runnable sections weren't nearly as runnable, and eventually everybody had to figure out just how much they were willing to give the conditions. Eastern States has never really been generous with buckles. Historically, only about half of the runners who start make it to the finish. In 2025, 258 runners started and 133 finished. The race's nine-year average finish rate is just 49.8%, and some years have dropped into the 30-percent range. That's the part of Eastern States that can get lost when we're talking about the front of the pack. While Kaylee was out there rewriting the record book, hundreds of other runners were having their own completely different Eastern States experience. Some were racing for a podium. Some were chasing a PR. Some were trying to beat a cutoff. Some were just trying to keep moving when their body was very clearly asking them to stop. Those are the stories that make this race what it is. So this week on The Running Mullet, we're recapping Eastern States from top to bottom. From Kaylee's historic win, to the standout performances that lead to podium finishes, the runners who fought their way through the heat and humidity, the people who surprised themselves, the people who got absolutely humbled by Pennsylvania, the DNFs, the buckle stories, the weather, the strategy, the amazing aid stations, and finally what it actually takes to get through one of the hardest 100-milers around. Because at Eastern States, the winner gets the headline, but every finisher has a story.

We sat down and talked about what he's doing RIGHT NOW with deer season just around the corner. Scouting, cameras, access, pressure, finding mature bucks, preparing properties, hunting multiple states, and knowing when to leave a spot alone. We also get into the side of hunting that doesn't get talked about enough, the time away from home, balancing family and hunting, failures, confidence, obsession, and what it actually takes to consistently chase mature whitetails year after year.No gimmicks. No magic October 31st tree stand. Just an honest conversation with a guy who's figured out how to put himself around big deer over and over again. If you're getting ready for whitetail season right now, you're going to want to hear this one.

Some races spend decades building a reputation. Eastern States didn't need that long. This race has only been around since 2014, but in just ten runnings it has become one of those races that makes ultrarunners stop and pay attention. That's not because of marketing. It's because the course has a way of exposing exactly who showed up prepared. This week on The Running Mullet, we're looking at the history of one of Pennsylvania's signature ultramarathons. Since its debut, Eastern States has challenged runners with over 100 miles of relentless climbs, technical singletrack, and the beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds. While the race itself is relatively young, it has quickly established itself as one of the premier endurance tests on the East Coast. We'll talk about how Eastern States carved out its identity, showcasing Pennsylvania's toughest trails, and why runners from across the country and beyond circle this weekend on their calendars. This episode isn't just about the course, however. It's about the people who've spent months, and often years, preparing for this moment. Nobody accidentally ends up on this starting line. You don't stumble into Eastern States. You earn your way there through months of early mornings, long weekends on the trails, and more than a few days where quitting would've been easier. Every runner standing on that starting line has already accomplished something long before the race begins. Whether you're racing, crewing, volunteering, or following along from home, join us Monday, 8/3 at 7:30pm as we discuss the history, the people, and the tradition that have turned Eastern States into one of the most respected races in East Coast trail running. Some races become important simply by surviving the test of time. Eastern States became important because it demanded excellence — from the people who built it, the volunteers who sustain it, and every runner willing to answer its challenge.

Author R.W. Fields joins I Am Refocused Radio to discuss his debut novel, The Mullet Man, a moving coming-of-age story inspired by events he experienced in the Deep South during the summer of 1955. The story follows Richie, a young white boy whose love of fishing leads him across the social boundaries of his community and into an unlikely friendship with Ulysses, an elderly Black fisherman known as the Mullet Man. As their bond grows, Richie begins confronting the realities of racism, poverty, fear and the unwritten rules that were designed to keep people apart. Fields reflects on the childhood experiences that remained with him for nearly 70 years, why he began writing his first book in his eighties, and how honest relationships can challenge prejudice more powerfully than arguments alone. The conversation also explores critical thinking, the courage to question inherited beliefs, and why the lessons of 1955 still matter today. The Mullet Man is ultimately a story about friendship, trust and what can happen when two people choose to cross the creek dividing them.Get the book: https://a.co/d/0awpM32oBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Subscribe now at YouTube.com/@RefocusedNetworkThank you for your time.

Forgetting your drop bag on race day is one thing. Losing your pacer at a crucial point because nobody remembered where they were supposed to meet you? That's a whole different problem. This week on The Running Mullet, we're diving into the behind-the-scenes logistics that can make or break a big ultramarathon. Pacers. Crew. Timing. Aid station planning. Drop bags. Communication. When do you actually need a crew? When is a pacer worth having? And how do you keep everyone on the same page when the race starts to unravel? We'll talk through the planning that happens long before race day, the mistakes we've made, and the little details that can save a lot of headaches when the miles start piling up. And because it's us, we'll spend the rest of the episode doing what we do best: comparing crew mistakes (and making fun of the other person's poor planning) and proving that even the best-laid plans rarely survive 100 miles. Whether you're tackling your first ultra with a crew or trying to streamline your fifteenth, there's something here to help you get to the finish line with fewer surprises.

This week on The Running Mullet, we're talking about a brand new Pennsylvania ultra, The Wicked Windstone, and why runners are already paying attention. Before the inaugural event has even happened, the team behind Wicked Windstone has been asking questions, collecting feedback, and making changes based on what runners want, creating a race that feels built with the trail community instead of simply for it. It's a refreshing approach in a sport where traditions and race flow often take years to evolve. Of course, the course has plenty to say for itself too - a 5K loop at Windstone Landing Farms. Rolling farmland, wooded singletrack, creek-side trails, pine forest, a climb known as The Wall, and a unique format (The Wicked Reversal!) that could have you running the course in reverse after an air horn sounds. It's a race designed to keep you thinking as much as running. This race includes 100 mile, 100k, 50k, and 5k distances with a universal 30 hour cutoff. We'll dig into why a first-year race is worth a chance, why community input matters, and whether this could become Pennsylvania's next must-run trail event. Sometimes the best races aren't the ones with the longest history. They're the ones willing to build something better from day one. The legendary race director behind the infamous Barkley Marathons has built a reputation for creating events that are equal parts endurance challenge, scavenger hunt, and psychological experiment. His races aren't just about covering miles; they're about discovering what happens when people are pushed far beyond what they think is possible.Heart of the South fits that mold perfectly. It's not just a race from point A to point B. It's an odyssey across three states, through brutal summer heat, sleep deprivation, and the kind of fatigue that strips everything down to your most basic self. But Phil isn't just another guy collecting belt buckles. He's also one of the more thoughtful voices in the ultra community, known for his blog Chasing 10K, where he writes about everything from avoiding burnout to finding what "good enough" really means in a sport that constantly asks for more. We'll talk about:What draws someone to a race this longThe highs, lows, and hallucinations of multi-day runningHow to stay in the sport for the long haul without burning outWhether winning changes the way you look at yourself as a runnerWhat it's like to take on a race dreamed up by Laz himselfIf someone handed you a bib for a 355-mile race tomorrow... would you say yes?Join us Monday, July 6th at 7:30pm (EST) for an incredible conversation with one of ultrarunning's most thoughtful grinders, and a guy proving that endurance isn't just about how far you can go—it's about how long you can keep showing up.New to streaming or looking to level up? This week on The Running Mullet, we're covering the legendary Laurel Highlands Ultra, a tough East Coast race (of the choose your own adventure variety: 70.5 mile or 50k) that definitely lives up to the hype. This year was the 47th running of the 70.5 and the 21st running of the 50k. The iconic 70.5-mile point-to-point runs from from Ohiopyle to Seward, while the 50k leaves off at the 31 mile point. Both once again delivered epic performances and survival stories. We'll break down an incredible day for Pennsylvania trail running, where we'll hear from Andy Styer, who crushed his 4th running of this epic race, and the remarkable story of Abby becoming the youngest finisher in Laurel Highlands 70 history—proving once again that trail runners keep getting faster, tougher, and apparently younger. Join us for stories, results, trail suffering, and probably a few rabbit trails along the way as we do. Or, catch us after the show wherever you get your podcasts.

That second streak continued because the Los Angeles Rams selected Alabama Football QB Ty Simpson with pick 13, a surprise to many that Simpson went that high. In this episode, we cover a little bit of everything: a big upcoming event, Alabama football nostalgia, Ty Simpson's NFL Draft outlook, and why Keelon Russell has so many people excited about the future of Alabama Football. We start by previewing the 2026 International Mullet Toss, where the competition is once again on between us on Mullet Toss Saturday. With Pearl River Resort sponsoring the trip, the stakes are simple: head-to-head bragging rights, and the loser buys the winner a steak dinner at Philip M Steakhouse. From there, the conversation shifts into music and memories as we talk about Toby Keith and why his songs meant so much to us growing up, especially in the years following 9/11. Then we dive deep into Alabama football. We break down Ty Simpson's NFL Draft prospects, why his football IQ, mechanics, and mental processing stand out so much, and why one of us believes he may be the best quarterback in the entire draft despite some durability concerns. We also take a trip down memory lane and try to name every Alabama quarterback since Jay Barker, including starters, backups, forgotten names, and fan favorites from different eras of Crimson Tide football. Finally, we look ahead to the next chapter at quarterback, where Keelon Russell is emerging as the projected starter. We discuss his arm talent, touch, upside, and why his passing ability brings back comparisons to Tua Tagovailoa. This episode is packed with Alabama football talk, NFL Draft discussion, old-school QB memories, Toby Keith appreciation, and a preview of one of our favorite annual competitions. #AlabamaFootball #TySimpson #KeelonRussell #NFLDraft #RollTide #TySimpson, #KeelonRussell, #AlabamaFootball, #RollTide, #CrimsonTide, #NFLDraft, #NFLDraftBuzz, #AlabamaQB, #MulletToss, #InternationalMulletToss, #PearlRiverResort, #CollegeFootball Learn more about your ad choices.
