Nederlandse onderzoekers van TNO hebben samen met het Franse Airbus een technische mijlpaal bereikt: een stabiele laserverbinding tussen een vliegtuig en een satelliet op 36.000 kilometer hoogte. De datasnelheid: 2,6 gigabit per seconde. Ter vergelijking: dat is meer dan twee keer zo snel als de maximale snelheid van 5G op een smartphone. De proef vond plaats in december 2025. TNO ontwikkelde de optische en regeltechnologie; Airbus integreerde die in de zogeheten UltraAir-terminal aan boord van het vliegtuig. In totaal werden 31 succesvolle verbindingen tot stand gebracht, elk 6 tot 14 minuten lang. Supersnel wifi in het vliegtuig is voorlopig nog toekomstmuziek. TNO benadrukt dat de technologie in eerste instantie militaire doeleinden dient. Een laserbundel is van nature veel moeilijker te onderscheppen of te verstoren dan traditionele radiofrequente satellietverbindingen, een cruciaal voordeel voor defensieoperaties waarbij veilige datacommunicatie essentieel is. Civiele toepassingen, zoals hogesnelheidsinternet voor passagiers, staan wel op de roadmap. Maar daarvoor moet de UltraAir-terminal eerst kleiner en goedkoper worden. De timing van de aankondiging is veelzeggend. Zowel TNO als Airbus framen het project nadrukkelijk als een kwestie van Europese strategische autonomie in satellietcommunicatie. Het project is gefinancierd door TNO, Airbus, het Netherlands Space Office en het Duitse DLR. Volgens de partijen is het een belangrijke technologie voor Europese technologische onafhankelijkheid. "Veilige lasercommunicatie is essentieel voor zowel defensieoperaties als civiele connectiviteit," zegt Kees Buijsrogge, Director of Space bij TNO. De Nederlandse sector voor zorgtechnologie heeft een nieuw Groeiplan MedTech gepresenteerd, als aanvulling op het rapport van oud-ASML-topman Peter Wennink. De sector zegt zo'n vijf miljard euro aan publiek-private investeringen nodig te hebben in de komende tien jaar om innovatie in de zorg te versnellen en Nederland bij de wereldtop voor medische technologie te krijgen. Het plan is deze week aangeboden aan de ministeries van Volksgezondheid en Economische Zaken. In BNR Beter bespreken we wat er in het groeiplan staat en wat de investering moet opleveren. De sector zet in op onder meer autonome MRI-systemen, AI-gestuurde en robotondersteunde therapieën en een landelijk netwerk voor zorgdata en patiëntmonitoring. Volgens de initiatiefnemers zijn dit belangrijke ontwikkelingen om zowel de zorg als de economie te versterken. TNO investeert een onbekend bedrag in de Nederlandse scale-up Fortaegis, die chipbeveiliginstechnologie ontwikkelt die naar eigen zeggen zelfs bestand is tegen kwantumcomputers. 'Wij geloven in hun potentieel om uit te groeien tot een technologie-kampioen van wereldklasse', zegt TNO-baas Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. Fortaegis ontwikkelt zogeheten secure processing units (SPU). Dat zijn computerchips waar de beveiliging al fysiek in is gebouwd. Daardoor is er geen traditionele beveiligingssoftware of versleuteling meer nodig, wat rekenkracht scheelt. In plaats daarvan heeft een SPU een eigen 'vingerafdruk' in de vorm van kleine verschillen in elektronische eigenschappen. Nederlandse nieuwsmedia die lid zijn van branchevereniging NDP Nieuwsmedia (waaronder BNR) hebben hun archieven gedeeltelijk opengesteld voor onderzoeksorganisatie TNO om taalmodel GPT-NL verder te trainen. GPT-NL moet dienen als een ethisch en transparant alternatief voor ChatGPT. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. Leden van NDP Nieuwsmedia hebben volgens TNO een 'omvangrijk' deel van hun archieven gedeeld. Die bestaan vooral uit nieuwsartikelen die GPT-NL moeten helpen met het begrijpen van de Nederlandse taal. NDP Nieuwsmedia benadrukt daarbij dat het niet de bedoeling is dat GPT-NL als nieuwsbron gaat dienen. Daarom zijn er geen artikelen gedeeld die tot zes maanden geleden geschreven zijn. GPT-NL, de Nederlandse tegenhanger van ChatGPT, is officieel gestart met trainen. Volgens ontwikkelaars TNO, NFI en SURF duurt dat tot eind dit jaar. Het resultaat moet een ethisch en juridisch verantwoord taalmodel zijn. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. GPT-NL omschrijft zich als een 'reactie op bestaande taalmodellen' dat transparant en betrouwbaar moet zijn. Bij taalmodellen zoals ChatGPT, Gemini, en Claude, is het namelijk niet altijd duidelijk of die getraind zijn met rechtmatig verkregen trainingsdata en hoe ze precies werken. Dat leidt ertoe dat auteursrechthebbenden niet altijd weten of hun werk gebruikt is voor trainingsdoeleinden terwijl daar vervolgens wel waarde mee gecreëerd wordt, zonder dat zij daar iets voor krijgen.
