Throughout her life, Shirley Chisholm fought for coalitional change. She was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968, the first Black woman to run for President of the United States in 1972, co-founder of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women's Political Caucus, both in 1971, and co-founder of the National Congress of Black Women in 1984. Toward the end of her life, Chisholm told an interviewer: “I want history to remember me … as a Black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America.”  Joining me in this episode is Dr. Anastasia Curwood, Professor of History and Director of the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies at the University of Kentucky, and author of Shirley Chisholm: Champion of Black Feminist Power Politics.  Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. On a topical and monumental edition of After Hours AM/The Criminal Code — with hosts Joel Sturgis, Eric Olsen, and secret weapon, forensic psychologist Dr. Clarissa Cole — we examine the tumultuous, tragic, and tectonic events of Charlottesville, VA this past weekend and the ongoing aftermath with well-known author and journalist Jackson Landers, a resident of Charlottesville and observer of events on the ground. Jackson joins Top of Hour 2; Hour 1 Clarissa leads us through the week’s other True Crime highlights. White nationalists gathered on Saturday for a “Unite the Right” march in the relatively progressive town of Charlottesville, VA, home of the University of Virginia. The rally was organized in opposition to a plan by local officials to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, the Confederacy’s top general, from Emancipation Park in Charlottesville. That plan prompted a similar protest in May, led by the white nationalist Richard B. Spencer, as well as a Ku Klux Klan rally in July. The tectonic forces behind the rally run much deeper than the removal of statues. Right-wing extremism, including white nationalism and white supremacy, is on the rise, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Many feel this extremism and attendant violence have been exacerbated by attitudes and policies of President Trump. Around 1:45 p.m., a car plowed into a group of counterprotesters and another car. One person was killed: Heather Heyer, 32, a paralegal from Charlottesville who was “a passionate advocate for the disenfranchised and was often moved to tears by the world’s injustices.” The driver of the car was James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, a city near Toledo, officials said. He faces an array of charges, including second-degree murder. Two state troopers also died on Saturday. Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke M. M. Bates were in a helicopter monitoring the

Can we eat our way out of our "invasive species" dilemma? Jackson Landers thinks that's part of the solution. The issue of invasives is becoming more prevalent as these species continue to spread, causing ecological destruction and the loss of native species and habitat all throughout our planet. As foragers and hunters, we have the opportunity to assist in the management of these non-native invasive species by targeting them when hunting and gathering.  We’ve been discussing invasive species throughout this season of ReWild Yourself Podcast, and today’s interview will be the first in an informal series investigating the topic. Our guest Jackson Landers is here to share his personal experience with eating invasives. Jackson is an author, science writer and adventurer based out of Charlottesville, Virginia, specializing in wildlife out of place. His most recent book, Eating Aliens, chronicles a year and a half spent hunting and fishing for invasive species and finding out whether we can eat our way out of some ecological disasters. In this episode, he recounts some of the interesting invasives he’s enjoying hunting and eating — from armadillo to lionfish. We discuss the true definition of invasive species, the effectiveness of hunting invasives as a form of eradication and how you can get involved with invasive species management. Enjoy this interview, and let’s keep this conversation going as we explore managing invasive species through hunting and gathering together this season! This episode has been brought to you by GreatBrewers.com. “I think there are some narrow things going on in the industry… There’s too much IPA, bro. There are going to be too many breweries, too. It’s just too big of an influx.” — Sam Merritt on Beer Sessions Radio “When you find common wisdom that says something in the wild isn’t worth eating, but you can’t find anyone who has actually done it, then maybe it’s time to try and do something with it. This week on The Farm Report, host Erin Fairbanks chats with a group of talented chefs who have also authored two books, Matthew Weingarten and Raquel Pelzel, authors of “Preserving Wild Foods”, and Jackson Landers, author of “Eating Aliens”. Matthew and Raquel discuss the importance of foraging, utilizing what grows around you and re-imagining some of the wild foods that are often overlooked such as dandelions and mulberries. Jackson encourages listeners to be open minded about the foods they eat and brings up the importance of harvesting invasive species in favor of over harvested species. What makes eating iguanas any less weird than eating lobsters? Re-imagine your food on an imaginative and resourcefully themed episode of The Farm Report. This program was sponsored by HeritageRadioNetwork.org. “Indentured servants would have in their contracts that they couldn’t be fed lobster more than 2 or 3 times a week. Then we changed our minds about it, and now it’s become a luxury item.” “I think eating iguana is much less weird than eating this big weird alien thing from the ocean [lobster].” –Jackson Landers, author of Eating Aliens on The Farm Report “The whole idea is to diversify what we eat. That’s the key to any successful food system – diversity. I think the separation of our food sources is what causes a lot of our irresponsibility.” “Food should always be delicious and it should always be accessible and easy to make delicious food.” –Matthew Weingarten, co-author of Preserving Wild Foods on The Farm Report
