MAUMEE'S CITY ADMINISTRATOR Patrick Burtch | City Administrator | Maumee A newspaper article back in 2020 … which you can find on MLIVE.COM … has a headline that reads, “LOVE HIM OR LOATHE HIM, THE FEATHER-RUFFLING PATRICK BURTCH CHANGED JACKSON.” It refers to Maumee City Administrator Patrick Burtch during his time as a “visionary” city manager for Jackson, Michigan. 2020 was right about the time he was resigning from that position to take the job in Maumee. The article reads: “Burtch knew he'd have to ‘ruffle a lot of feathers' to make Jackson the city he envisioned. But after seven years of ruffling, the pushback started taking its toll.'When you know you're going into it, realizing you're stirring up a fire by blowing oxygen on that fire and it could burn you - that's a tough decision to make,' Burtch said.' But it's not a decision I'm willing to go back (on).” The barrage of citizens spewing disdain for him at the City Council meeting occasionally got to Burtch. He'd sometimes argue back during public comment, and later said the vitriol is one of the reasons he knew it was time to move on.” For the first time - Maumee City Administrator Patrick Burtch joins LEADING EDGE to discuss his vision - development - the sins of prior administrations - his management style - his public persona - his history - and the reason he believes Maumee's best days are to come.

We look ahead to a week 11 matchup with Maumee
The early voting center on Sylvania is less daunting than the crowds and cars would have you believe. I made one surprising choice with my ballot. After all that the app isn't live! Possible sewer water solutions in Maumee. I understand the cheering for Deshaun Watson's injury. He DID have to deal with 2 dozen very serious lawsuits. Thanks Cucumber Guy.
Early voting is underway in Ohio; Cleveland TV reporter shot in a suspected domestic violence crime; nearly 200 arrests made in Columbus street racing and takeover bust; Columbia Gas gets the green light for Maumee pipeline.
Host Joe DeMare talks about the "Trapped in Maumee" movement. Homeowners have been hit with bills of $30,000 or more to replace their sewer lines, and been given only 90 days to do it. Joe talks about some financial strategies that could be used to soften the blow, but focuses on the necessity of stopping the flow of sewage into the Maumee. Then he reviews the new movie, "My Friend the Penguin." It's a heartwarming tale of a Brazilian fisherman who overcomes grief and depression when he rescues an oil soaked penguin, who then returns every year to spend the summer with him. Rebecca Wood talks more about mangroves. Ecological News is mostly good news this week, with huge strides being made by wind and solar around the world.
A crew from Toledo Area Bicyclists visit to invite you out to MARR - Mad Anthony River Rally. A ride out to Grand Rapids, next Saturday. Kelly, Joe and David were also willing to answer lots of my questions about how biking can safely and practically grow here in Toledo. If you're interested in the MARR, you can visit HERE. First, why hasn't this person in particular received more criticism for the debacle in Maumee?
Cincinnati teacher arrested for child pornography; settlement reached in Columbus shooting death of Casey Goodson Junior by a former sheriff's deputy; Ohio continues to add to record-breaking tornado count; fisherman in Toledo credited with saving a woman from the Maumee river.
Maumee, Ohio, winner of the 2024 Strongest Town Contest, is facing a big sewer infrastructure challenge. It needs to update its sewer system to comply with EPA regulations — an extremely large, expensive project. To handle this problem, the city is requiring residents who want to sell their homes to pay for the needed updates to their sewage systems, which is generating backlash from residents. In this episode of the Strong Towns Podcast, Chuck explains the history of sewer infrastructure, how the Clean Water Act affects cities and the very limited options that cities have to handle this kind of challenge. He also points out that the Strongest Town Contest is about celebrating cities that are working hard to improve, rather than finding cities that are perfect. Just because Maumee is facing this challenge does not mean that it's a failure — and it's not alone in this struggle, either. All cities are either facing this challenge, too, or will be facing it in the near future. That's the consequence of decades of unproductive growth. ADDITIONAL SHOW NOTES Chuck Marohn (Twitter/X). Maumee leadership apologizes for the sewer ordinance. Tax free shopping includes restaurants. Fast food workers are gonna get blown out. LOTS of Deadpool things. So, YES, spoilers. And Robert Downey VON DOOM!?
It's VERY crude, but I'm trying to offer solutions, which I haven't seen much of so far. Before that, Deadpool and Wolverine, but no spoilers - except the one that was intentionally leaked. How are so many spending (we don't have) at these events!? Who's responsible for fixing the sidewalk? Depends on the tree. Building of the new jail has completely stopped.
I'll save it for the end because 1. It may not affect you 2. It's not local. My sole criticism of the Maumee sewer drama. If the Home Run Derby is making news its NOT good, I love this MLB player even more every he shows us more Decoy. Futsal!? I'm a bit of royalty with this. Pizza Palooza preview. It's not gonna get much better. I was fortunate.
There's no what!? Sgt. McLendon and Ofc. Cervetto are back because you're running out of days to apply for the next TPD academy. Before they leave I ask them to dispel some common myths WE believe when it comes to police. First, the Maumee situation is a disaster.
Host Joe DeMare talks about the continuing "lawnification" of the towpath park in Maumee. A caller bemoans the continued loss of trees as neighbors cut down big old trees for no reason. Our guest, Larea Sprow from the Ohio Invasive Plant Council talks about the ongoing efforts to hold invasive plant species at bay in Ohio. Rebecca Wood tells us all about strawberries. Ecological News includes "Nuclear Joe" Biden's insane push for more nukes and how Ford is offering leases on its electric pickup truck for $200 less than its gas guzzlers.
5-7-24 Tonight at 9PM ET we will be talking with Christopher Clarke, Owner/Meadmaker at Four Fires Meadery and Head Brewer at HEAVY Beer Co. in Toledo, Ohio. Chris got into making mead after first getting into homebrewing. In late 2014 he took up homebrewing, a short half a year after first getting into craft beer. His brewing buddy at the time, Mack Garton, and he would brew every single Monday for a year and a half, and somewhere halfway through that they made their first meads. In the next few months he would meet a new friend group and eventually went in on a mead together. Of that group, 4 of them continued further and began making meads as a collective, to share amongst the group as a whole. The 4, Andrew Lynch, Athreya Rajan, Josh Kirk, and Chris would go on to form Four Fires Meadery! In 2015, Chris had his first mead, B. Nektar's Episode 13, and was in love. He jumped in and made his first mead just a month later. That same year, he met the other Four Fires guys at a local craft hideout called the Local. They kept meeting at Chris's place, and continued their confederation of mead makers who wanted to create a meadery. Their first group project that year was Hail Satin. In 2016, they made meads, and homebrew beers, and enter contests, taking some awards and started forming the base business plan, and reaching out to angel investors, and worked on looking for a location. Chris's enjoyment of craft beer, and meads intertwined with the fun he was having homebrewing, and eventually professionally brewing, seemed to have been accelerants for one another, so in the time between making his first mead, the meadery opening, and now, a LOT has changed. In 2017, Chris was hired as a production brewer at Maumee Bay Brewing Co. with the intent of revitalizing the portfolio. Later that year, Four Fires signed a lease on their building, and work began immediately on converting the space into a production facility. And the first mead found its way into the tanks in early 2018. As they neared their first release, Four Fires gained visibility amongst mead lovers with them getting some of their pre-production mead out there for people to try. Join us to check in with Chris and see what Four Fires is up to! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. Maumee City Admin Patrick Burtch is on, errrr was coming on to get the vote out for the town in the final four of the Strongest Town competition. Instead, I, we, got all the explanations we may have been looking for, or missed, about the entirety of the Uptown Maumee reimagining. I love Patrick's passion for designing cities! Also, the fondue spot IS open now. First...it finally happened. A local teacher is no longer with job because of her Only Fans account. I know, PAY TEACHERS MORE. HOW!?
We welcome new Maumee Mayor Jim MacDonald for a visit. As you might guess, lots more discussion about the road diet, and all things with the reinvention of Uptown Maumee. You will be FLOORED at how many businesses have had to close up shop due to the work on Conant. Just how close to the end are we with the work? Jim was a long time Maumee police officer and the department's chief as well. He had some memorable experiences with a visit to Quantico and FBI-land there. He's got to pack the Maumee Indoor, what theater is he doing it with?

No intention to be disrespectful by just putting Margo P. But her last name is Puffenberger and the length of the title would've been unfriendly to your screen. Before we talk Maumee Uptown updates, rental ordinance drama and safe bike paths with Margo... Issue 1 type things are going to be continually routed on ballots. Perhaps why one school levy passed and another did not. And the return of a Mexican buffet I have only heard about but not been to.

The centerpiece of the Wolcott Heritage Center is the Hull-Wolcott House, which was built in 1830 in Maumee, Ohio. This mansion is a great reflection of the pioneer family who built it and remained in that family for several generations before giving it to the Maumee Historical Society. Over the years, the society added seven other buildings to the center that all represent the early life of this historic city. The Wolcott family is intertwined with not only Maumee's history, but they represent a coming together of the Native American culture with early American pioneers. Mrs. Wolcott was the granddaughter of a Miami chief. Many people believe that several members of the Wolcott family might still be hanging around the property. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Wolcott Heritage Center. The Moment in Oddity features Frisky Fishies and This Month in History features the Curtiss Model E Flying Boat.
