Welcome back to the podcast. We are in John Chapter 13 and John Chapter 15, our theme this week is: Love One Another. I told you last week, and I'm going to say it this week, this is probably one of the most challenging things for us to do. You would think it would be easy, but it's hard at times because we're imperfect and people are hard to love. We are hard to love at times. I hope everybody put on their big girl panties today because this word is going to cut deep. And so we gotta be able to take it. So I hope you're ready.  Show Links: Not Your Momma's Bible Study Kit Season 2 Stuff Jesus Said Reading Plan & Phone Wallpaper Nelson's Quick Reference Chapter by Chapter Bible Commentary Imperfectly Brave Girs Night Out Book Me as Your Speaker The Bible Project Let's Connect:  Facebook  Instagram Twitter

Did you know the majority of trafficking victims are in the LGBTQ+ community or people of color? Many people say they want to help fight against the injustice of human trafficking, but when they realize what victims look like, they no longer want to be part of the conversation. Wendy J. Olson is a healing coach and the founder of Grit Plus Gumption Farmstead, an organization that helps women walk through healing after the trauma of sexual exploitation and domestic violence. Wendy is a survivor herself and encourages women to pursue holistic healing from trauma and prevent burnout in anti-trafficking work by knowing their own stories well. She helps people understand: - what trafficking actually is vs. the common misconceptions - how to avoid having a savior complex - why many people say they want to help, but then change their minds - how you can be an advocate, not just loud noise **TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses the topics of rape and sexual exploitation** National Hotline for Human Trafficking: 1-888-373-7888 Become a Subscriber of Head to Heart Podcast: https://anchor.fm/jenny-marcum/subscribe Book: To Be Told - Dan Allender https://theallendercenter.org/store/products/to-be-told/ Anti-Trafficking Organizations: The Abolitionist Collective, Abigail Eernisse. https://www.theabolitionistcollective.com/ Twelve 11 Ministries, Kathy McGibbon. Roll through your mental index, identifying the kind of person or people you do not prefer, or those you typically avoid? They do things you don't like. Their attitude, mannerism, behavior, worldview, or [fill in the blank] is not your cup of tea. Perhaps it's something your spouse, child, parent, or church member does. Maybe it's that Christian hypocrite who needs to “get a life” or someone who has different strengths and weaknesses from yours. Do you have that person in mind? Great! Let's proceed by applying the Lord's mandate to love your enemy. Oof. This week has been a doozy around the Mills family home. We lost our beloved Bear, a big mini Aussie, who saw us through so much life and heartache (you have probably even heard him on the podcast barking a time or two, saving us from mailmen). Bear had surgery after an obstruction from eating underwear (yep, anyone else have a dog who does this?) and could not recover. It was excruciating to witness Bear's suffering post op and eventually his death. Mornings have been hard and teary as my sidekick is gone. Our little Bruce (1 year) is left behind and has struggled to eat and find his own way without his big bother to lead.Everyone of us would say we have survived some sort of heartache, but how many of us are bold enough to name it trauma? I get it. The word “trauma” has become trivialized in some ways. We know more about it today, there's more education than ever before on the topic of trauma and often when this happens we become desensitized to it. The truth is, there are all sorts of traumas, little “t” traumas (microagressions, moments of fear and panic, stitches in the knee) and big “T” traumas (fires, death, divorce, natural disasters, physcial, sexual, emotional, spiritual abuse). Funny thing is, sometimes our body doesn't always know the difference if we've not acknowledged our heartache. This week, Cathy Loerzel of the Allender Center, guides us through the topic of her new book with Dr. Dan Allender, Redeeming Heartache, how past suffering reveals your true calling. This book explores the archetypes of Orphan, Stranger and Widow and their transformed roles of Priest, Prophet, and King/Queen. Brett and I have gone through this book with our small group and it's been a beautiful journey of sharing stories, insight, and witnessing one another's pain but also potential. For me, the journey of grieving my own myriad of unique traumas has provided a more integrated connection to my work at Jesus Said Love and Lovely - it's also exposed my failures and shortcomings. Cathy encourages us to look at our stories of heartache with faith, hope and love wrapped up in the kindness of God. Want to get a FREE copy of the book? Share this post on instagram, tag @jesussaidlove as well as another friend, and you'll be entered to win! Winners will be announced by Friday ¾ via instagram. All the LOVE!Emily and Brett

This one was for the MAMA'S!!! I said it on the show and I'll say it again: I feel like this was a book I both needed and one I could have written. My journey in motherhood was not necessarily untraditional, but it was uncommon. I both worked and stayed home, we danced to a nonconformist rhythm. As my children were born, I was also birthing the ministry of Jesus Said Love, leading worship around the country and the world, and writing/recording music with Brett. Hattie and Lucy (our older girls) were often on the road with us, sleeping in small college dorm rooms for summer camps, getting to know different nannies, and being nursed at truck stops and airports along the way. When Gus came along we didn't travel as much but our ministry to women in the sex industry grew and our time leading worship locally became routine. Weeknight band rehearsals and home visits to women from the clubs, Friday night club outreaches and Sunday soundchecks for Brett and I at 7am meant all three kids were backstage in pj's where a hearty breakfast of donuts, juice boxes and peppermints abounded. Along my road I would have several Southern women say, “I love that your calling is to ministry to women in the sex industry, mine is to be a mom.” My mouth would swallow the shame and my gut would regurgitate it as rage: My calling to women did not nullify my calling as a mom. Where did this asinine hogwash come from in the church? Motherhood and ministry are not antithetical, but rather a beautiful paradox that we live within.I do hope this conversation gives you beautiful freedom and a deep breath as a mom. Cheers to rewilding motherhood!

Today I am interviewing my new friend Emily Mills Co-founder of Jesus Said Love, a non-profit that helps to awaken hope and empower change in the lives of those impacted by the commercial sex industry—including human trafficking. They do this through outreach, job training and work therapy, social enterprise, and education and prevention.    Emily and I talk about what it looks like to protect the woman in need, the woman who may be so similar to us, but has been dealt a different hand in life. We have more things in common than divide us.    She gives us a different perspective of what a woman looks like who has been trafficked. She gives us a different inside look of a woman who may feel like this is the only path of survival. Emily and her husband Brett spend their life engaging, empowering and providing a safe place for women to come and feel worthy.    Emily and Brett started as worship leaders but their heart broke wide open after hearing about the sex trafficking industry. They started to hang out with moms and women and got to know their stories. Then they started going to strip clubs to care for the women there. Not to save them or condemn them, but to show them love in ways they had never experienced before.    Their story of strip clubs to a thriving non-profit and now social enterprise, called Lovely to help employ survivors, is incredible. The perspective she gives us, and how we can also learn to see others who we may have judged in the past is a must listen.    Here are some ways you can support Jesus Said Love.    Next time you want to buy gifts for friends or yourself, shop Lovely. Each purchase helps employ survivors.  https://ourlovelystore.com/   Donate to Jesus Said Love and help them continue the incredible work they are doing. https://jsl.churchcenter.com/giving    Instagram: JesusSaidLove Social Enterprise Instagram: Lovelyenterprises Jesus Said Love: Jesussaidlove Check out our giveaway on instagram this week with Jesus Said Love Instagram: Bestrongstory

Allison gave this painting to her gay son Jake for Christmas in 2018 and shares how their family is navigating this road. It’s a beautiful family love story. Allison also talks about her new organization called Lift and Love (check it out on IG at @liftandloveorg). Kirk talks about why he did this painting including the 7 perfect sides. Kirk also shares the doctrine of Christ behind this painting and helpful insights about our LGBTQ members as Kirk has friends on this road. We also talk about the ‘signal’ the painting sends to our LGBTQ members that you are safe person. Sister Alyssa Edwards, a High School Seminary Teacher, has this painting hanging in her seminary office (see Episode 165). Thanks for being on the podcast. The two of you are awesome.

Dale and Randy sit down with Brett and Emily Mills of Jesus Said Love to talk about their work with commercial sex workers in several Texas cities. Their mission is to share the revolutionary love of Christ with people in the commercial sex industry by awakening hope and empowering change. Jesus Said Love became a Charity Champion in 2017.Jesus Said Love's annual fundraiser, Wild Torch, is April 23rd. Wild Torch is more than a fundraiser. The event brings together food, art, music, and dance in the historic Hippodrome Theater in Downtown Waco. More info about the event here.Jesus Said Love's story:Founded in 2003 by worship leaders Brett & Emily Mills, the Mills led worship for a conference focused on ministry to sex workers. Overwhelmed by stories from former exotic entertainers, Emily became burdened for the marginalized in Waco, the Mills' hometown. Within two weeks, the first Easter outreach extended the love of Jesus to women in the Waco sex industry. A small group of women ventured into two strip clubs, armed with gift bags filled with practical, high-quality gifts. The outreach was a success! In fact, each club manager extended an open invitation for JSL to return at any time. For the next few years, volunteers would return to the clubs bi-annually: at Christmas and Easter. In 2007, the Mills made the decision to bring this new ministry under the administration of their already-established worship ministry and nonprofit organization: Bartimaeus Ministries, Inc. The name Jesus Said Love was then adopted for this specific outreach program to women in the commercial sex industry. The burden was for the marginalized: those whom the church was not reaching because of ignorance or negligence. What began as a bi-annual outreach in Waco has now grown into a full time ministry of monthly club outreaches, social work assistance, education, awareness, medical education, childcare and nutritional advocacy in Waco, Dallas, Bryan/College Station, San Antonio, Temple/Killeen, Houston, and (launching soon) Tyler.About the Charity Champions Podcast:This podcast is produced by 360 Solutions and Randy Lane.
