Randy and Dale sit down with Dr. Tim and Janice McCall of Restoration Gateway. Their mission is 700 acres of land in Northern Uganda. They work to restore peace and heal wounds among the vulnerable children and war-torn people in the area.About the Charity ChampionsThe ministry of Restoration Gateway started in 2004 when seven Ugandan men began meeting to pray under a tree on the land presently held by the project. Their prayer was that God would send someone to help restore all that the enemy had stolen in their land. God answered those prayers and issued a call to Dr. Tim and Janice McCall in early 2005 to move to Uganda. The first trip by the McCalls took place in May of 2005, and the land for the project was selected. Randy sits down with the Executive Director of The Cove Heart of Texas, Kelly Atkinson. They talk about the youth homelessness epidemic across the country, and how The Cove is fighting it by providing a safe place for teens to thrive.Learn more about The Cove at: thecovewaco.orgLearn more about Charity Champions at: charitychampions.orgAbout The Cove - Heart of TexasAfter working as Homeless Liaison for Waco Independent School District for five years, Cheryl Pooler saw a huge problem. As she met with student after student who had been abused, abandoned, or kicked out of his or her home, she knew that they needed a safe place to go after the school bell rang each afternoon. She knew that these students deserved a chance to succeed and that the Waco community would not stand to see them fall through the cracks into chronic homelessness. Cheryl started researching best practices around the country and found that an after-school teen nurturing center was what Waco needed to ensure that these vulnerable students were empowered and equipped to graduate high school and achieve their goals. Cheryl reached out, and the community responded. In the summer of 2015, Cheryl Pooler and community volunteer Rosemary Townsend founded the Cove and formed the Board of Directors. The Cove is molded after the NEST in Georgetown, TX. In October 2016, The Cove began serving its first cohort of students. In the 2016-17 school year, The Cove served 61 individual students. This last year, we served 76, a nearly 25% increase. In their first year, The Cove saw 440 visits over 118 days of operation. In the 2017-18 school year, the nonprofit saw 1,359 visits over 138 days of operation.About the Charity Champions PodcastThe Charity Champions Podcast is co-hosted by Dale Smith, Director of Community Outreach for TFNB Your Bank For Life, and Randy Lane, CTO and VP of Marketing for 360 Solutions. To combat that alarming statistic, the MCC Foundation brought the Men of Color Success Initiative to campus. The program helps men of color find available services and pairs them with mentors. They also sponsor trips to neighboring college campuses for visits and leadership conferences. About this episodeRandy and Dale sit down with UnBound's National Director Susan Peters to talk about how her organization is working to stop human trafficking in Central Texas and the world. They discuss how to identify the signs of human trafficking. Susan also talks about how UnBound works with law enforcement to comfort victims. This is the first in a three podcast series on human trafficking in Central Texas. Stay tuned for our next episode featuring McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara. We'll wrap up the series by talking to a former victim of sex trafficking.UnBound's StoryWhen we learned of children being sold into sex trafficking in our own communities, we felt compelled to do our part to stop it. We asked: What if attorneys, IT specialists, teachers, moms, medical professionals—all spheres of society—worked together? Starting small, we realized that a lot of small adds up to something really big. By working together through prevention, professional training and survivor advocacy, we’ve started to see communities activated to fight human trafficking.Headquartered in Waco, Texas, UnBound is made up of individual chapters around the United States and across the world working to see change in their own communities. Each chapter works in different areas based on the culture and needs of their city. Dale and Randy sit down with Brett and Emily Mills of Jesus Said Love to talk about their work with commercial sex workers in several Texas cities. Their mission is to share the revolutionary love of Christ with people in the commercial sex industry by awakening hope and empowering change. Jesus Said Love became a Charity Champion in 2017.Jesus Said Love's annual fundraiser, Wild Torch, is April 23rd. Wild Torch is more than a fundraiser. The event brings together food, art, music, and dance in the historic Hippodrome Theater in Downtown Waco. More info about the event here.Jesus Said Love's story:Founded in 2003 by worship leaders Brett & Emily Mills, the Mills led worship for a conference focused on ministry to sex workers. Overwhelmed by stories from former exotic entertainers, Emily became burdened for the marginalized in Waco, the Mills' hometown. Within two weeks, the first Easter outreach extended the love of Jesus to women in the Waco sex industry. A small group of women ventured into two strip clubs, armed with gift bags filled with practical, high-quality gifts. The outreach was a success! In fact, each club manager extended an open invitation for JSL to return at any time. For the next few years, volunteers would return to the clubs bi-annually: at Christmas and Easter. In 2007, the Mills made the decision to bring this new ministry under the administration of their already-established worship ministry and nonprofit organization: Bartimaeus Ministries, Inc. The name Jesus Said Love was then adopted for this specific outreach program to women in the commercial sex industry. The burden was for the marginalized: those whom the church was not reaching because of ignorance or negligence. What began as a bi-annual outreach in Waco has now grown into a full time ministry of monthly club outreaches, social work assistance, education, awareness, medical education, childcare and nutritional advocacy in Waco, Dallas, Bryan/College Station, San Antonio, Temple/Killeen, Houston, and (launching soon) Tyler.About the Charity Champions Podcast:This podcast is produced by 360 Solutions and Randy Lane.
