In February of 2024, the Mississippi John Hurt Museum burned. The fire, believed to have been set intentionally, happened immediately after the Legendary Mississippi Blues Pioneer's cabin received landmark status. That was not the first or last attack on the Hurt Family museum, land, or legacy. A week later, the sheriff's office began investigating a break-in at the historic store located on County Road 41 in the Teoc community, where the Mississippi John Hurt marker was stolen. The executor of the estate and granddaughter of Hurt, Mary Francis Wright, has been fighting for a long time the many racialized attacks on her family's land and legacy. Mary and Shannon Evans have been working to keep the integrity and safety of the location and family. In this episode, I will speak with Mary and Shannon about the fire and many other assaults they have endured.

Why We Need More Feminist Prayers with Shannon K. Evans

What makes a prayer “feminist?” Shannon Evans — author, retreat facilitator, and the spirituality and culture editor at National Catholic Reporter — is back on the pod today to reflect on exactly that question. She has a great new book out, a compilation of prayers, called “Feminist Prayers for My Daughter: Powerful Petitions for Every Stage of Her Life.” And let me assure you, this book is for everyone. Not only does it provide spiritual accompaniment, but also demands that we ask questions like: What would the Psalms have sounded like if they'd been written by women? What life experiences do we need to better integrate and lift up in our prayer? What images and understandings of God do we need now, in this moment, to better deepen our relationship with our Creator? Shannon shares her reflections on these questions, as well as insight into her own writing journey — and some hot takes mystics and why they'll be the topic of her next book. A brief warning: There is mention of sexual abuse around minute 15 of this episode. No details are given, and the context is Shannon's own surprise about the power of her book's prayers in very challenging situations. This one was for the MAMA'S!!! I said it on the show and I'll say it again: I feel like this was a book I both needed and one I could have written. My journey in motherhood was not necessarily untraditional, but it was uncommon. I both worked and stayed home, we danced to a nonconformist rhythm. As my children were born, I was also birthing the ministry of Jesus Said Love, leading worship around the country and the world, and writing/recording music with Brett. Hattie and Lucy (our older girls) were often on the road with us, sleeping in small college dorm rooms for summer camps, getting to know different nannies, and being nursed at truck stops and airports along the way. When Gus came along we didn't travel as much but our ministry to women in the sex industry grew and our time leading worship locally became routine. Weeknight band rehearsals and home visits to women from the clubs, Friday night club outreaches and Sunday soundchecks for Brett and I at 7am meant all three kids were backstage in pj's where a hearty breakfast of donuts, juice boxes and peppermints abounded. Along my road I would have several Southern women say, “I love that your calling is to ministry to women in the sex industry, mine is to be a mom.” My mouth would swallow the shame and my gut would regurgitate it as rage: My calling to women did not nullify my calling as a mom. Where did this asinine hogwash come from in the church? Motherhood and ministry are not antithetical, but rather a beautiful paradox that we live within.I do hope this conversation gives you beautiful freedom and a deep breath as a mom. Cheers to rewilding motherhood!

Trusts.   What the heck are they and why might it be a good idea for you to have one?   Most people believe that trusts are this elusive thing reserved for the uber-wealthy…   …or have only heard of it as being a sort of plot device in a movie or murder mystery.   Joining us today is attorney Shannon Evans, a recognized expert in the area of trusts and estate planning. She practices out of Las Vegas and is a frequent speaker on the conference circuit.   With so much confusion around trusts, Shannon is a refreshing presence that gets to the heart of the matter real quick. She demonstrates that trusts are a lot more pedestrian—and a lot more useful—than most would think.   Key Topics: So… What is a trust, exactly? (3:27) Who should have a trust? (8:06) What is an “irrevocable trust”? (14:39) What you should take into consideration if someone asks you to be a trustee. (18:40) In which state should you set up your trust? (22:48) Why should you NOT have IRAs in trusts? (25:33) Who is the fiduciary of a trust? Thanksgiving is a time of tradition. How we celebrate the holiday today probably has a lot to do with how we celebrated the holiday growing up. The foods we place on the table. The special napkins we pull out of the closet. The signature cocktail we serve our guests. The dessert – pies and brownies and more. Take a moment: How much of your Thanksgiving experience reflects the Thanksgivings that have come before, perhaps even before you were born? Tradition is important and forms us in countless ways. But sometimes, traditions can box us in. Sometimes, they limit our horizons, keep us trapped in the old ways of doing things. That's something that our guest today thinks a lot about. Today's conversation is with Shannon Evans, a longtime contributor to Jesuits.org and an author of a new book, Rewilding Motherhood: Your Path to an Empowered Feminine Spirituality. It's a wide-ranging conversation: We talk about images of God that are helpful and that are limiting for mothers; the hyped-up masculinity of St. Ignatius' writings – and how we might integrate them in a healthy, hopeful way; patriarchy and systemic oppression; and, Thanksgiving traditions. If you're not a mother, you might be thinking: This episode isn't for me. Well, not so fast. This is a challenging, important conversation for all of us. What I found in Shannon's writing and thinking is a challenge to liberation, a liberation from those modes of thinking and acting that keep us from achieving our full God-given potential. We'd do well to remember that we go to God together, as a community, and if any of us is bound up and held back, then all of us are affected. Our entire community of God's family is kept from achieving God's dream. And so, even if you're not a mother, you'll be challenged by this episode to reflect on your relationship to those who are – and on your relationship with yourself, as a member of God's family. As I've said on the show many times before, Dorothy Day is a huge inspiration of mine + was one of the catalysts that caused me to start this podcast. That's one of the reasons I was so excited to have Shannon Evans on the show to talk about her experience working in Catholic Worker houses, a movement that was founded by Dorothy Day. But Shannon and I also dive deep into adoption, embracing our weaknesses, why people are so afraid of the phrase “social justice”, and what it means to truly operate as part of the larger body of Christ. Also, I loved her insight on her shifting view of “doing ministry”, specifically in the context of my own life. I share with her what I feel like God's been saying to me lately and how it's leaving me struggling to understand which direction He wants me to walk in. Overall, it was such a joy to chat with Shannon and I hope you enjoy our chat! This episode was brought to you by Audible. So the coach shows the experienced player what they want to teach, then the experienced player teaches that skill to the less experienced. Great way to teach your leaders how to lead. Great small area game Chumash - 3 on 3 - can score on either side of the goal. Similar to 3 on 3 basketball, you have to take it 'back' when possession switches. Pop goes the weasel/Fox in the box 5 defenders in front of goal, 5 offensive players. Defenders have to stay in the box, offensive players cannot go in box. Then a defender 'pops' out of box and covers the ball, then when that players passes it the defender goes back into box and the next defender pops out. Teaches offense to not run into traffic and move the ball. Nonverbal communication Creating some really simple hand signals is much more effective than trying to yell across a field College recruiting - Showcases Elite camps - the key is the student needs to have a relationship with the coaches before the camp. College recruiting - Know what D1 demands are D1 - Train and practice year-round - Full time job year-round and you go to school D2 - Full time job in-season, mostly a full-time job out of season D3 - Full time job in-season, off-season the expectations are much lower Best way for a high school coach to prepare an athlete for college Freshmen/sophomore year - Look for camps where coaches from a school you want to go to will be. Make sure the school you are interested in has the major you want to study. The athlete should email coaches (make sure you understand the specific NCAA guidelines for your sport). Never should come from the parent. Coaches don't want to hear from parents. Remember MOST college athletic scholarships are not for full rides. Many only cover 1/4 to 1/3 of cost. Grades/test score/rigor of your schedule - are the most important things a high school athlete should focus on. The one that got away Being a female coach in a boys' sport - Shannon got called horrible names. She taught her players the best way to beat a bully is to outscore and outplay them. Favorite books/quote: 'You can march to the beat of a different drum but you have to stay in the parade' Parting Advice For each practice - have a clear measurable obective. Tell the players what it is at the beginning of practice, then review it at the end and ask for input on how well you accomplished it. -- Reviews are the lifeblood of the podcast!- If you like the podcast- please take 2 minutes to write a review! Click here - Ready to be an Awesome Youth Coach? In your stages of grieving the scandals in the Church, how can you invite Jesus in to heal and restore your heart? What are some practical ways you can pray for the victims of abuse and the restoration of the Church? Journal Questions: 1. What is holding you back from something that God is calling you to do? Who is someone that you can encourage to offer their gifts in a specific way? How is God calling you to be a part of the renewal of the Church? Quote to Ponder: “Hope has two beautiful daughters. “What do parents of high school and college kids fear most?”  This is a question I ask Shannon Evans, the scholar coach. A former teacher, Shannon turned to helping families find the right college because as a teacher, she found that kids were not often coming up with the right fit for themselves when it came to going to college. She uses a family questionnaire, which she describes in this interview, in which parents have to answer questions about their kids: their preferences, their values, their likes and dislikes. She says, “There are often big surprises when the family reconvenes and shares their answers with each other.” You can find Shannon at https://thescholarcoach.com/.com, and she welcomes free, 20 minute consultations to answer you initial questions.
