Adoption: The Making of Me

Laura was born to teen parents in South Carolina in May 1984 and was adopted through Catholic Charities by a wonderful and loving couple who could not have biological children. An adopted brother joined the family seven years later.  She always knew she was adopted, and while adoption was spoken about openly and positively, it was understood by both siblings that searching for biological family would not be supported. The birth of Laura's second child sparked a curiosity to begin the search through an ancestry kit. With the help of a search angel, she was able to identify her biological parents and connect with aunts and an uncle on both sides of her biological family. Reunion has brought answers to many questions, healing, and a continuing unpacking of issues that have always been nagging but not understood. Today, Laura lives with her husband and three children and is a child welfare attorney. Poet and essayist Kathryn Nuernberger joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about her new collection of lyric essays, Held: Essays in Belonging, which is about symbiotic mutualisms, and grief and joy in an era of worsening climate change. She discusses COP30, the United Nations climate gathering currently underway in Brazil, and considers the global failure to keep warming below 1.5 °C. She reflects on the nature of symbiotic relationships and offers several examples, noting that over several cycles even parasitic relationships might achieve the balance of mutualism. Nuernberger places her work in the larger tradition of climate and nature writing, which previously tended to celebration and in recent years has turned more elegiac, and also talks about writing personal grief in relation to societal grief. She explains new vocabulary developed to address emerging climate concerns and emotions and identifies several concepts that need new words. She reads an excerpt from Held. Recently, Glennon and Abby had the pleasure of being guests on a new podcast from our dear friend Michelle Obama, called IMO. You know on WCDHT, we have insightful conversations that give fresh perspectives, uplift you and leave you feeling more fulfilled. And on IMO, Michelle and her big brother Craig Robinson bring candid perspectives to the everyday questions shaping our lives, relationships and the world around us. Each week, they're joined by a guest to tackle real questions from real folks just like you offering practical advice, personal storytelling, and plenty of laughs. In this episode, Abby and Glennon join to help an IMO listener figure out priorities when deciding where to move her young family. Glennon discusses why she moved her family seven times, and, as the “bonus parent,” Abby shares what she thinks is most important to their kids' happiness (hint: It's not unlimited cake-pops, though she's tried). Plus, Michelle and Craig share their own stories of uprooting families for careers—including a very strange move to a big house in Washington, DC.  You can find more episodes of IMO at https://lnk.to/imomichellecraigGD To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever wondered if God really hears your prayers? This episode might just be the confirmation you need.We sat down with Vlad, whose story had us in tears—and in awe—of God's relentless love. Abandoned by alcoholic parents, sent to a Ukrainian orphanage at just 7 years old, and surviving abuse and hopelessness, Vlad's life seemed destined for pain. But then... God showed up—in the form of a man named Doug, whispered prayers in hidden bushes, and a loving family from Oklahoma who heard the call to adopt. What makes this story so special is how relatable it is. You might not have grown up in an orphanage, but maybe you've felt unwanted, unseen, or like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling. Vlad's story will not only restore your hope, it'll challenge you to love more boldly, believe more deeply, and trust that even the darkest seasons don't get to write your ending. If you've ever doubted your worth, questioned if prayer works, or needed a reminder that God still moves mountains, this episode is your breakthrough.Chapters:[00:00] Podcast Preview[00:49] Your Biggest Breakthrough Introduction[01:24] Topic and Guest Introduction[02:40] Life in the Orphanage[04:47] Thoughts on the War in Ukraine[06:03] Trauma and Abuse in an Orphanage[08:16] Meeting Doug, who led Vlad to Jesus[11:06] Arriving in the United States[14:50] Struggles Living in the US[18:16] Finding Family in a Church Community[21:08] The Adoption Process[24:07] Biggest Miracle of Being Adopted At Age 16[27:00] Adaptive Mom Heard My Prayers[29:06] Importance of Listening to God[30:37] Encouragement To Keep Praying[32:34] Vlad's Life In Christ[36:30] Clinging to God's Words[38:05] Living Life Full of Adventure[39:29] The Lies Roaming Around Some Orphanages[41:56] Final ThoughtsCall to action:Make sure to visit yourbiggestbreakthrough.com for your FREE access to our e-book and audiobook, "Unstoppable: Divine Intervention in Overcoming Adversity," showcasing six powerful real-life stories. Hi listeners! Welcome back to the podcast! This is season 5 (can you believe it?) and episode 117! I took a few weeks off to enjoy my family over the holidays and to spend some time on a few exciting things I have in the works, so I appreciate your patience as I took a break from putting out the podcast. But now we're back and there are a lot of exciting episodes coming up in this season and I can't wait to introduce them to you! Did you know that 20% of the youth that age out of the foster care system are instantly homeless. Tori Hope Petersen was one of those young adults who decided it would be easier to go it alone than have to navigate the system that caused her so much pain, having been in 12 foster homes from the ages of 12-18. But Tori was blessed to have mentors to come alongside her and help, eventually becoming adopted by her track coach. Tori's mom came from brokenness and generational curses and did the best she knew how, but Tori has become intentional about breaking those curses in her own family. She also does advocacy in the foster care system and has written two books, Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family Through Foster Care, and her just released book, Breaking the Patterns that Break You: Healing from the Pain of Your Past and Finding Real Hope That Lasts. As I spoke to Tori, I realized that, even though she's still so young, her experiences have made her wise beyond her years. If Tori's story encouraged you would you kindly leave a rating and a review on your favorite podcast app? You can go to my Facebook or Instagram at Building Strong Homes and find a video there that will show you how to do that if you're not familiar with the process.
