With over 4000 franchises, Jim Penman is the face of the biggest franchise group in the country. (Once you listen to the chat you will hear me rattle all 52 divisions). What started as a young boy helping his neighbour, evolved into Jim's Mowing, which evolved into the Jim's Group. But interestingly, Jim isn't a big fan of business. In fact, he has an entirely different bigger picture. In their chat, Jim shares with Matt some of his 'pathetic failures' and why gives his phone number to every franchisee.
Today I have the pleasure of sharing a man that everyone will be family with. The man behind Jim's mowing. Jim Penman started a part-time gardening business while earning his PhD in history at Latrobe University. He launched a full-time mowing business in 1982 with a $24 investment. He originally aimed only at taking on subcontractors, but his business grew and he gradually began to specialise in the building up and selling of lawn mowing rounds. By 1989 he franchised his business, and since then Jim’s Mowing has become the largest franchise chain in Australian and the largest and best-known lawn mowing business in the world. Jim’s Cleaning was launched in 1994, followed by more than 50 other divisions which now operate in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. Jim’s Group now has over 3,800 Franchisees and a turnover of approximately $500 million. Jim says “The key to success in franchising is an overriding concern for the welfare of franchisees, and constant improvement in customer service.” He is still actively involved in the running of the business, is directly accessible to all his Franchisees and to any client with a serious complaint. He is funding a research program into the epigenetics of social behaviour, a continuation of his PhD work, which he believes could help in the treatment of mental illness and addictive disorders. His books ‘Biohistory’, Biohistory: decline of the West’, and ‘Every Customer a Fan’ are available on Amazon and from his web site www.biohistory.org.

Jim Penman started Jim's Mowing (the first franchise of the Jim's Group) as a part-time gardening business while he completed his PhD in History. It went full time in 1982 and was franchised in 1989. Currently, there are over 2,900 Franchisees in four countries covering 36 industries, and growing at the rate of around 200 per year. For all the business success he has enjoyed over the years, Jim Penman remains remarkably unassuming. In this fireside chat I had with him, Jim reveals how and why Jim's Mowing came about and how he built it in to the second biggest franchise group in Australia today. This is a wonderful story of nailing your brand, providing exceptional customer service and knowing exactly who your customer is. Enjoy! (And don't forget to share with one other small business owner).
