I first heard Ailie Robertson's music this past summer when I was moderating workshops at the online Somerset Folk Harp Festival. Ailie is one of Scotland's leading composers and a sought after harpist. Life has a way of sending you down paths that you might not have originally considered. In our chat Ailie talks about how she studied genetics at Cambridge University for four years then decided to take a gap year to pursue a masters degree in Irish Traditional Music at The University of LImerick's Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, my alma mater. Working with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and others at UL helped Ailie start down a path that has led her to be an in demand composer and performer. Her newest project is fittingly named “Adenine'' after one of the four nucleobases in the nucleic acid of DNA, a nice connection to Ailie's years of studying genetics at Cambridge University. Here's a description of the album taken from Adenine's Kickstarter page:This solo project creates rich, multi-layered soundscapes with use of an electric harp, a myriad of pedals, field recordings and a modular synth.Ailie is joined by an illustrious cast of musicians including a groundbreaking string quartet, and producer Jim Sutherland. This album is a homage to the harp and a celebration of it's multifaceted possibilities as both an ancient instrument and an undeniable force in contemporary music.Nial Keegan, Course Director for the MA in Irish Traditional Music Performance, is quoted as saying that Ailie's, “synthesis of Irish, Scottish and contemporary harping technique into an individual style represents the realization of otherwise unimagined possibilities for the Celtic harp.” The music that we are listening to is, “The Exploding Bow” from Ailie's album, “First Things First”. Ailie is also a founding member of The Outside Track who just released a Christmas album that is fantastic. I wrote this set of music based on Jim Sutherland's classic reel The Easy Club for the participants of Meitheal Summer School. The brief was to write a piece of music that could be memorised and be fun to play. Needless to say the young people were fabulous and did an amazing job. Over 100 episodes have passed since writer / director David Mackenzie first joined us on Soundtracking. On that occasion, we talked about his critically acclaimed thriller, Hell Or High Water, and much of his back catalogue. He returns to discuss Outlaw King, a passion project about Robert The Bruce which is available to watch now on Netflix. As well as a score by Tony Doogan (on which David is credited), Outlaw King features plenty of traditional Celtic and ecclesiastical music - which was sourced by music supervisor Jim Sutherland. You'll hear plenty of both throughout this episode. We should point out that if you don't know the story of Robert The Bruce, David goes into it at length during this conversation, which obviously provides much of the narrative content for his movie.
Jim Sutherland joins us for a chat about his pipe related projects as well as recording pipes. Theres also music from Donald Black, Gordon Duncan and Julie Fowlis.
In this episode, we spoke with Tom Carey, Creative Director at Landor. We spoke about his early graduate days, sending out more than 100 emails to try to get his first gig, until finally landing his first job working with A+B studio (now Wiedemann Lampe). He then moved onto Hat-Trick, (Jim Sutherland's studio) and later Pentagram before moving to Melbourne and ultimately Sydney. We covered his time working on the Sydney Opera House rebrand where he worked with renounced typographer Laurenz Brunner to create a unique typeface Utzon in product design software Rhino, working with Landor and talked about designers saving the world. tomcarey.co twitter.com/tompaulcarey instagram.com/thomaspaulcarey wiedemannlampe.com thechase.co.uk interbrand.com/au/work/sydney-opera-house lineto.com/The+Designers/Laurenz+Brunner rhino3d.com collider.com.au landor.com agda.com.au/events-awards/events/nsw/march/positive-impact-%E2%80%98powered-by-pecha-kucha%E2%80%99-sydney/ alinavision.com
