What happens when your homeschool plan goes on the road—literally? Today, I'm joined by second-generation homeschooler and seasoned moving pro, Adrienne Denison, to talk about schooling through cross-country moves, starting over in a new place, and making sure your curriculum doesn't get lost between boxes of Legos and winter coats.Adrienne unpacks (pun absolutely intended) the lessons she's learned navigating three major moves in just six months, transitioning her four kids through pivotal school years—and why she's so passionate about not letting perfect get in the way of done. As a CC (Classical Conversations) family and longtime Autopilot user, Adrienne shares her best tactical tips for planning, packing, downsizing, and keeping your school system humming even when life's upside down.If you've ever wondered how to homeschool when your schedule and address are both a moving target, this episode is full of honest encouragement, practical hacks, and permission to let some things go so you can say yes to connection, community, and new beginnings (even if it means doing math on the trampoline). What You'll Learn About Homeschooling While MovingHow Adrienne survived three “mini-moves” in one big cross-country adventureHer secret for never losing track of curriculum (even with boxes everywhere)What to toss, keep, or give away—and why purging was actually a blessingWhy Adrienne doesn't mind letting academics take a back seat after a big moveHow using Homeschool on Autopilot helped her keep everyone on track (and sane)Tips for banking “school days” early and freeing up time for finding new friendsWhy supporting your family's emotional needs is just as critical as checking boxes—and yes, you have permission to lamentAdrienne's best hack for organizing books, prepping for high school, and making your next move smoother (even if it's just down the street)Links and Resources From Today's ShowPut Your Homeschool Year on AutopilotConsistency BootcampClassical ConversationsMagic Number SchoolingDark Clouds, Deep Mercy (book on lamenting)Homeschool Better Together CommunityFor full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to pambarnhill.com/hsbt38

“ It may not be until the new heavens and the new earth, but we're eventually going to know that God had goodness that was behind the dark clouds of our lives.” So says Mark Vroegop, newly appointed president of The Gospel Coalition (TGC) and author of Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, during his conversation with Russell Moore. Moore and Vroegop talk about the ways TGC has evolved since its founding through leaders such as Tim Keller and Don Carson. They talk about the nature of belief, how trust in Jesus alters our understanding of who we are, and navigating seasons of doubt. Their conversation covers ministry partnerships, vocational decision making, and the importance of deep friendships. Moore and Vroegop consider what the Psalms have to say about seasons of doubt and grief, the relationship between character and gifting, and trust in the goodness of God. Hey friends, welcome back to Purpose Beyond Motherhood! We're so glad you're here for an honest conversation about grief, lament, and how God meets us in our hardest moments.Today, we sit down with our friend, Clayr Simnacher, who shares her journey through loss, sorrow, and the practice of lament. Clayr, a counseling psychology professor, opens up about compound grief and navigating uncertainty. Even as a counselor, she has found herself at times asking the same raw question so many of us have: God, do you see me?Clayr walks us through the biblical practice of lament—how it allows us to bring our deepest pain before God, trusting that He is near even when we don't see the end of the story. She reminds us that grief isn't weakness or punishment, but an invitation to draw closer to Him.One quick note: Clayr references Psalm 13 but actually quotes from Psalm 22— This moment is a powerful reminder that even when we feel abandoned, we can bring our raw emotions before God—just as David did.We pray this episode meets you where you are. If you're walking through grief, infertility, or loss, know this—you are not alone, and your pain is not unseen.Episode Highlights: The pit of grief. Join me for an incredible conversation with one of my favorite authors, Mark Vroegop!Mark is the author of one of my all-time favorite books, 2020 ECPA Christian Book of the Year, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy. He's back with a powerful new book, Waiting Isn't a Waste: The Surprising Comfort of Trusting God in the Uncertainties of Life. From the publisher:Exploring 6 Characteristics of Waiting to Prompt Wisdom from God and Gain Invaluable PeaceThroughout our lives, we experience countless periods of waiting. Some moments are mere nuisances—others are daunting seasons filled with intense worry and doubt. We grow impatient by immovable traffic or crave an impending answer to a medical condition. Whatever our current circumstances, our innate response is to take action rather than stay still. In Waiting Isn't a Waste, author Mark Vroegop calls believers to resist the human urge for control and lean on Christ for comfort while we wait for the uncertainties of life to unfold. Vroegop explores what it means to wait on God through 6 important characteristics—waiting is hard, common, biblical, slow, commanded, and relational. This book not only teaches listeners how to wait on God but inspires them to embrace waiting—for it prompts wisdom from God and brings invaluable peace to the present.Written for Christians in Seasons of Waiting: Those struggling with anxiety, discouragement, or weariness as they waitExplores 6 Characteristics of Waiting: Waiting is hard, common, biblical, slow, commanded, and relationalWritten by Mark Vroegop: Author of Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, which was named the ECPA 2020 Christian Book of the YearMark Vroegop (MDiv, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary) is the lead pastor of College Park Church in Indianapolis and the author of the ECPA 2020 Christian Book of the Year Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament. Where does evil come from in the world? That's a heavy question. But it's a question that we all can wrestle with. As we finish our series in the book of Judges this Sunday, we will see a story of tremendous evil. And yet, in that darkness, there is a depth to God's mercy that gets revealed that should captivate us with its beauty and fill us with hope. Join us on the best day of the week!

God means for the church to be a place of transformation as people encounter His love and form a relationship with Jesus. One crucial piece of transformation occurs in our relationship with God when we become honest with Him in prayer."I sometimes get frustrated by the state of the world; I look at all the brokenness around me, the constant news cycle of gloom and despair. Verses 7-9 of Isaiah 33 are a reality to many people in many places. At times, I feel despair, which in and of itself is not wrong, and I lament about the state of the world. 'Lament is how you live between the poles of a hard life and trusting God's sovereignty. Lament is how we bring sorrow to God. Without lament, we won't know how to process pain. My lament fuels my prayers; it fuels my cry of 'Lord, please arise, please be lifted up, please be exalted in our time.'''Book- Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop
Back in October, my husband Brad and I had the opportunity to meet Mark Vroegop at the Our Hearts are Home conference in Indianapolis. Mark is the lead pastor of College Park Church in Indianapolis. He and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of four living children, and a daughter, Sylvia, who was stillborn in 2004. He is the author of a book titled “Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament”, in which he explores how we can bring our sorrow to God by vocalizing our pain through honest spiritual wrestling. It was a blessing to have the opportunity to meet him at the OHAH conference, and I am sharing his presentation from that event with you today. I hope this blesses you as much as it blessed me! We will continue our series, Deep Mercy, with Romans 11:1-10. Paul will speak to the question of whether God has finally given up on Israel because of their ongoing rebellion. We will see that He hasn't, and how Paul proves that point. We'll also see that Israel's rebellion is rooted in their insistence that the Law and their effort are what brings life. But, "You can't get there from here."
We continue our series on DEEP MERCY and see God's amazing patience with Israel — and with each of us. It is interesting to study God's relationship with the Jews during this current crisis in Israel. We are reminded in these chapters that Israel remains His chosen people and someday they will return to Him.

We continue our series on DEEP MERCY by looking at the plan of God for both Jews and Gentiles. We will be reminded that many are still counting on the “wrong ticket” to have a right relationship with God.
We will step back into our study of Romans by starting a new series that will cover Romans 9-11. After reaching the pinnacle of the book in Romans 8, Paul turns his attention to a few more challenging questions before moving into an extended section of practical application. Romans 9-11 will deal with Israel's relationship with the gospel. But woven into that discussion is a series of big questions that all of us need to work through.
Do you find it hard to trust God when you don't fully understand what he is doing in your life? Like it is easy to trust Him when life is going well. But when things are hard and you are walking through grief or heartbreak or when the rug is pulled out from under you, it is always a little harder to trust that God has a plan. Oh friend, that is why I am so excited for the second T in my STRENGTH acrostic from my book, Depth: Growing through Heartbreak to Strength. The second T stands for Trust God is good when your mind is doubting, and you don't understand. This one is hard. So I am really excited to have Sonia Abraham on the podcast this week. She is a fellow friend of mine and she also walked through a divorce and today we are going to dive deep on how that looks to trust God when you have doubts and don't understand why the circumstances of your life did not go as you hoped or planned. We are going to talk about some different Bible characters too. There is lots of truth and wisdom on this episode! Book Recommendations: *Living Unbroken by Tracie Miles *It's Not Supposed To Be This Way by Lysa TerKeurst *Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop Sonia Abraham writes about faith and loss on her website. She's passionate about leading Restored & Renewed, a local ministry at her church in Texas that encourages and supports women walking through separation and divorce. She works as an editor and has three teenaged children. Have you been following this series with my STRENGTH acrostic from my Depth Book? We have already covered S,T,R, & E and then we took a break for the one year birthday of the book. Now we are back to the acrostic and today we are going to cover N- Never Lose Sight of God's Grace. It is interesting because when God dropped that STRENGTH acrostic in my mind on that bus ride, there were a couple letters that were harder to identify than others and the N was one of them. I remember meeting my friend for lunch. She also had walked through a divorce, and we were talking about how some heartbreaks have a shame or a stigma attached to them and others don't. And she said, “I think it is really important that you do something about God's grace.” And that day at lunch together, we came up with Never Lose Sight of God's Grace! It is a very important part of the book; we talk about forgiveness and being vulnerable. So I am really excited to have Faith Griffin Sims on the podcast this week. She is going to share about her heartbreak. Sadly, she lost her son to suicide. This week is suicide prevention week and suicide awareness week. So I want this episode to also help us become more aware. Faith is going to share so much truth and wisdom. Faith wrote a post for my Heartbreak to Strength Story Blog Series back in 2021. The title of her post was Held By His Strength and I cannot wait for you to read her powerful article. Have you ever felt the presence of God? Have you ever felt Him close to you? I know for me, I felt the presence of God the most in the middle of my hard seasons: my divorce, the loss of my friend, and my miscarriage. Maybe you can relate. This week on the podcast, I am so excited to have Evelyn Sherwood. She is a friend of mine who sadly has walked through many hardships. One of the things we talk about today is just how much she felt the presence of God in the middle of this hard season. She actually says this amazing quote (I am going to give you a little sneak peek because it is so good). She says, “The sweetness of His presence far surpassed the pain of my suffering.” Evelyn has so much wisdom to share with you. But before we head over to the conversation, I have something exciting to share. My book, Depth: Growing Through Heartbreak to Strength is actually celebrating its one-year birthday at the end of August! So for the next 8 weeks, I am doing a special series based on the acrostic in the book. As I was writing the book, I prayed to God for wisdom on how to write a book with three storylines. He gave me this acrostic for the word, STRENGTH! So, we are going to be going through the acrostic starting with the S today with Evelyn to Seek God and Invite Him Into the pain. Then we will move through the acrostic over the next 8 weeks on the podcast. I so excited for you to hear the wisdom from Evelyn of how she was able to seek God and invite Him into the middle of her pain. She went through an intense 18 month season where there was one storm after another, so you do not want to miss the truth she shares! Book Recommendations: *Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vreogop *Breath as Prayer by Jennifer Tucker Evelyn Sherwood is a trusted soul-care guide, speaker, and blogger who has served in pastoral ministry for thirty-five years. Sherwood serves an active and growing audience through her blog, evelynsherwood.com, and her bi-weekly subscription devotional Hope for the Journey, encouraging her readers to grab hold of hope in the trials by helping them recall God's work in their past. Nothing puts a smile on her face more than sharing about the faithfulness of God with a friend over a steaming cup of cappuccino or iced peach tea. On a summer evening, you might spot Evelyn and her husband, Steve, driving through Indiana farmlands in a canary yellow '47 Ford pickup or enjoying an outdoor movie night in their backyard with their eight grandkids. You can connect with Evelyn on her website, on Instagram, and you can sign up for her weekly devotional. *Note: If you are interested in purchasing this book or the books recommended
The Gospel According to Luke: Encountering the Real Jesus Pastor Brian Bone
The first Thursday in May is designated by the United States Congress as a day when all US citizens are asked to turn to God in prayer. Every year the president is required by law to sign a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray on that day. This focus on prayer for our country is crucial and prompted today's podcast on the subject of prayer. When death intersects our lives, it is unwanted, often unexpected, and interrupts everything. When this happens, it is important that we do not let grief separate us from talking to God. This is the time when we need Him the most. And it is essential that we pray with and for our children. In this episode, Lori discusses prayer including: Her journey and experience with prayer Prayers of Jesus and prayer in the Bible Reasons to pray Different types of prayer Prayer resources Resources on Prayer: What Happens When Women Pray by Evelyn Christensen Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious Specific, and Strategic Prayer by Priscilla Schier, The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children by Stormie Omartian Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop. Episode Summary: Have you ever hit rock bottom in your life? Perhaps received a life-threatening diagnosis? Or lost the one person who kept your feet on solid ground? How do you carry joy and sorrow in the same breath? How do we handle the rock bottom experiences in life? Today we're going to be talking about how to handle life's rock-bottom experiences. Quotables from the episode: Home is where we are together, but God's word is a home that can't be taken from us. We can't live off old manna. Rock bottom is that place where we feel out of faith, and yet we discover that God is faithful. When we endure trauma, it's like a bear that is no longer chasing you, but it feels like it is. God's not afraid of our questions. One-third of the Psalms are lament, which is getting honest with God about what's hard, and opening the door to let the comforter come in. Grieving is an internal process, where mourning is a public display of loss. Mourning entails risk because we open our lives to others who may or may not handle our pain well. Prayer positions us in a place where God can bring healing. Scripture References: Matthew 27:46, CEV “Then about that time Jesus shouted, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?' which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?'” Isaiah 60:20, ESV “Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.” Isaiah 54:10, NIV “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” Recommended Resources: Dark Clouds and Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegrp When Mountains Crumble by Danita Jenae Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day.
