A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
Every once in a while, a thriller comes along that feels both fun and grounded — that was my experience with Relay. Directed by David Mackenzie (of Hell or High Water fame) and starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and Sam Worthington, this cat-and-mouse story dives into the shadowy world of whistleblowers and corporate cover-ups.It's a world I don't know personally, but the film felt real enough to pull me in. What stood out most is how the characters constantly forced each other to step up their game — no “stupid” decisions that take you out of the story, just a sharp escalation that kept me engaged. While the final twist didn't feel fully developed, it still delivered a punch and reminded me that sometimes a movie can be both imperfect and incredibly fun.If you're into gritty thrillers with strong performances and clever dynamics, Relay is well worth your time.
A fun show this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to take a look at two new films that just opened in theatres on Friday and speak with three filmmakers whom I've spoken with in the past, all of whose work I admire, respect, and in the case of one director, can't get enough of. I'm talking about the wonderful filmmaking team of MICHAEL ANGELO COVINO and KYLE MARVIN and their hilarious new non-rom com rom com, SPLITSVILLE, along with one of my fave filmmakers and the man who I believe helped put Taylor Sheridan on the map as a writer with the fabulous "Hell or High Water", director DAVID MACKENZIE and his new thriller RELAY. So let's kick things off with the comedy stylings of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin and SPLITSVILLE. It's a story of two couples. Ashley and Carey. And Julie and Paul. All best friends. And all with personalities as different as night and day. But while Ashley and Carey are on a road trip, driving down a multi-lane highway, out of the blue and left field Ashley asks Carey for a divorce. Let the hilarity and hijinks begin! Good-natured and kind of wimpy, Carey runs to besties Julie and Paul for support and a place to crash while he figures out what to do. It's then that he finds out their secret to their happy marriage. It's an open marriage. Shocked and curious, things take a left turn with Carey crossing the line, resulting in chaotic madness and mayhem for all concerned. So now, let's switch gears and ratchet up the thrills and tension with RELAY and director DAVID MACKENZIE. I have been champing at the bit, sitting on this interview with David since early June, as the publicity team asked me to hold it until the film's release. Now the release has arrived, and I can share this interview with all of you. RELAY is a tense, New York thriller which has a timelessness to it while echoing the great paranoid thrillers of the 70s. In RELAY, Riz Ahmed plays Ash, a world-class quot;fixerquot; who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client named Sarah (Lily James) needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. RELAY is like a puzzle, with each production element integrating or interlocking with another. It's always fascinating to get inside David's mind and understand his vision, and what a vision this is with RELAY. So take a listen as director DAVID MACKENZIE talks the taut and tense paranoid thriller RELAY. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
On this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and director David Mackenzie to talk about ‘Relay', a paranoid thriller set in New York City that follows a world-class “fixer” (Riz Ahmed) who brokers lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. When a new message arrives from a potential client (Lily James) needing his protection to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher, and more. For Ahmed, the attraction was as much about who he was working with as the story itself. “The thing that's always one of the most important things is your director,” he said. “You're going to be in their hands. You've got to kind of vibe with them. So David was a big pull. And then it's also who else are you going to be doing this with? When I heard it was Lily, I was absolutely thrilled.”

The UAE's Ministry of Education has announced a new unified school calendar for 2025-2026 for all private and public schools across the whole country. It's aimed at bringing some consistency across the board and across age groups, and it could mean big changes for some families, especially when it comes to holidays. We discuss this with John Bell, the Founding and Current Principal of Bloom World Academy and Jenny Mollon, Senior Editor from Which School Advisor. Men’s magazine GQ attracted some very polarised opinions when it wrote a piece encouraging men to capitalise on their wives' friendships by befriending their husbands. The comments raised a couple of key questions - why do women seemingly find it easier to make and maintain friendships as adults? And do men really need their wives to make friends for them? Monarch Health Centers' Ali Ilyas is here to help A new research involving a host of different recruiters across the UAE suggests that in some industries, the name on your diploma matters less than the skills you bring to the table. According to some recruiters, a mid-tier graduate could outearn an academic star because of the roles they choose, how fast they adapt, and the value they deliver. “The whole of Texas, huntin' our shadow…” 2016's Hell or High Water followed the story of two brothers robbing from the bank that's foreclosing on the family farm all the way to a Best Picture nomination. From director David Mackenzie and a soon-to-be Yellowstone empire architect Taylor Sheridan, the straightforward film deals with legacy, class and the universal relatability to a very specific place and time. Clint, Cal and Nick talk about westerns as a genre that looks good with “neo” in front of it, Chris Pine as a mustache influencer, and how Ben Foster is the most interesting thing on screen in whatever movie he's in (even when he plays a wizard!) Oh boy. We've found ourselves in a bit of Barney Rubble, eh? However hard we try, we seem to find ourselves back in prison. And in this episode, you can listen to us in "real-time" literally figuring out how many "prison movies" we've already uncovered, and it's alarming. We're back with Mr. Mackenzie after we did YOUNG ADAM all those episodes ago, and it's another pretty bleak and disheartening piece of cinema starring Jack O'Connell in a big bad man prison. Key words here: "Prison Kisses" and you won't be disappointed.Enjoy! (hahah)
Ah, we're back. We're back in Scotland. I don't remember it being so "blue". Not only that, it's really dark, and moderately attractive men are acting like right twats to very attractive ladies. We're back on the "Ewan Train" with David Mackenzie's YOUNG ADAM. The "erotic" (?) drama about a bunch of folk on a barge and the lives Ewan McGregor's character basically ruins for the sake of creative inspiration. Yeah, doesn't make the most endearing of central characters but that's kinda the point. The one thing we did agree upon at least was the inclusion of custard. More custard, please! There's a bunch of sex in this but it's not as central as you'd think it would be. It just IS, so strap in, we've got a fair amount of stuff to talk about on this one.
Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore Although the ALIEN: ROMULUS postproduction team of Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore came into this project with a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst them, they still learned a thing or two from director Fede Álvarez, including Fede's not-so-secret formula for jump scares, as well as the notion that clear dialogue isn't always as important as gripping action. Plus, they reveal the hidden intent of Álvarez to split ALIEN and ALIENS into the two sides of the REMUS/ROMULUS space station. ALIEN: ROMULUS is the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, set between the events of ALIEN (1979) and ALIENS (1986). The film follows a group of downtrodden young space colonists in pursuit of better life conditions. During the course of their escape from endless servitude on a mining colony, they encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. JAKE ROBERTS, ACE After his work on CITADEL (2012), STARRED UP (2013), THE RIOT CLUB (2014) and BROOKLYN (2015), Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing for his work on HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016) starring Chris Pine. The movie also garnered him a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award. Roberts then cut OUTLAW KING (2018) for Netflix directed by David Mackenzie. He then began collaborating with director Alex Garland, editing his 2020 miniseries DEVS as well as his film, MEN (2022). Prior to ALIEN: ROMULUS, Jake cut Garland's CIVIL WAR (2024). Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
In this podcast episode, Larry Ostola talks to David MacKenzie about his book, King and Chaos: The 1935 Canadian General Election, published by UBC Press in June 2023. In 1935, Canadians went to the polls against a backdrop of the Great Depression and deteriorating international conditions. This election was like no other, as five major parties competed for voters who were used to a traditional slate of Liberals versus Conservatives. King and Chaos examines the issues, personalities, and significance of this turning point in Canadian political history. More than anything else, the election was a referendum on Conservative prime minister R.B. Bennett, whose name had become synonymous with hard times. As his government and his party splintered under the weight of outdated Tory policies, the opposition Liberals watched the destruction. Meanwhile, the newly minted Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, Social Credit Party, and Reconstruction Party broadened the electoral base, bringing working-class Canadians – and working-class issues – more directly into the political process. King and Chaos demonstrates that the advent of third parties permanently changed the political landscape. And while other countries turned to dictators and demagogues, King delivered a less radical, but equally important, change: an effective electoral machine and a national coalition comprising the two major linguistic groups that dominated Canadian politics for the next generation. David MacKenzie is a professor with Toronto Metropolitan University's Department of History. His main areas of academic interest are in Canadian history and international relations and the study of international organizations. First let's create some test files by echoing the number 1 and the number 2 into a file called 1and2.txt [host@hpr]$ echo "1" > 1and2.txt [host@hpr]$ echo "2" >> 1and2.txt And let's create another one with the value 2 and 3 and we'll call it 2and3.txt [host@hpr]$ echo "2" > 2and3.txt [host@hpr]$ echo "3" >> 2and3.txt Then we can see what each command does using these examples. Mark and John (@MFFHorrorCorner on Twitter) discuss the 2016 thriller Hell or High Water. Directed by David Mackenzie, and starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham, and several banks, the movie focuses on what happens when two brothers start robbing banks to save their family ranch. In this episode, they also talk about Taylor Sheridan, movie brothers, and the excellence of Ben Foster. Enjoy!
DA BINGE BOIS ARE MODERN COWBOYS RIDING STEEL STEADS THIS WEEK, as we head down to the south and rob banks alongside Chris Pines and his in universe brother, not the actor from Bloodlines! Enrique goes into the discussion saying he was pleasantly shocked as he thought the movie was going to be bad because of the country accents and break neck pace it had by jumping straight into action with no exposition, Tristan rides his high horse for putting a solid movie on the list, and Eli uses a plethora of words to hate on his kind, those of the Caucasian persuasion. Next week, Da Bois go to kick it with Chloë Grace Moretz in the Amazon original TV series The Peripheral, a show based on a modern sci-fi book of the same name! The week after that, we return to our boi Batista in Blade Runner 2049! As always thanks for watching, hit us up on social media for a shoutout! From director David Mackenzie, who brought us the excellent modern western Hell or High Water in 2016, comes a retelling of the First War of Scottish Independence in the early 14th century. Taking place during and after the capture and execution of William Wallace, this film focuses on Robert the Bruce and his allies in their fight for freedom from Edward I Longshanks and from the English invasion and occupation of their homeland. Filmed entirely on location in Scotland and England, it is undoubtedly gorgeous, with great cinematography, wonderful acting, and impressive costume and set design. So what did we think of this film in a post-Braveheart world? Is it more historically accurate, and did we like it?
