Dawn French and Edward Rowe star in a new sketch show with a Cornish flavour. Park the clichés and open your eyes to the reality of this wondrous funny and feral land. Visit Rick Stein's Cornwall (he's got planning permission for it), meet LJ and Jess, the low energy Gen-Z receptionists at the Royal Hotel, and find out just how important shanty singers are to the Cornish economy. Recorded in front of an audience at the Acorn Theatre in Penzance, Wosson Cornwall? is a sketch show celebrating everything that makes real contemporary Cornwall a culturally rich and funny place - its people, its history and its modern way of life. This is the first episode in a four part series with an entirely Cornish cast and writing team. The cast includes Dawn French (Vicar of Dibley / French and Saunders), Edward Rowe (star of Bafta-winning film BAIT and HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon), Tamsyn Kelly (ITV2's Stand Up Sketch Show, BBC New Comedian of the Year Award finalist 2021), Joanna Neary (Channel 4 sitcom Man Down and Gary Oldman film The Darkest Hour), Anna Keirle (award-winning Cornish stand-up, actress and writer) and award-winning actor Ciaran Clarke. Written by James Henry, Morwenna Banks, Catherine Beazley, Max Davis, Jane Harvey, Tamsyn Kelly, Jo Neary, and Alex Smith. Script Editor: James Henry Music: The Jolly Strumpets Production Co-ordinator: Tamara Shilham Sound Design: David Thomas Produced by Simon Nicholls A Mighty Bunny production for BBC Radio 4
Comedian and artist Jo Neary (Ideal, Man Down) on illustrator Ronald Searle, in particular his school satires: St Trinian's and the immortal Molesworth books, with Geoffrey Willans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Walking back to the show only to walk away again, Jo Neary takes on another trio of Orphans with Martin and Sam. Beginning with the 90s religious material, heading back to theatre of the 80s, and then the street poetry of William Kennedy's childhood, we also consider how Waits's writing functions as a dusting soundtrack. website: songbysongpodcast.com twitter: @songbysongpod e-mail: songbysongpodcast@gmail.com Music extracts used for illustrative/review purposes include: Walk Away, Orphans: Brawlers Bawlers & Bastards, Tom Waits (2006) If I Have To Go, Orphans: Brawlers Bawlers & Bastards, Tom Waits (2006) Poor Little Lamb, Orphans: Brawlers Bawlers & Bastards, Tom Waits (2006) Clip from Ironweed, dir. On her podcast about language, The Allusionist, Helen Zaltzman has covered everything from cryptic crosswords to translations to public apologies. But don't worry: She's not judging your vocabulary when she's reading something for fun. "When I'm not forced by work to do this kind of interpretation, I like to switch that part of my brain off," she says. On today's episode of Follow Friday, Helen talks with Eric Johnson about poorly-spelled names, stand-up comedy, blind dates, the word "queer," horrifying kitchen gadgets, witch doctors, and more. Jo Neary is an actor, writer, comedian, artist, puppeteer, singer…the list goes on. Nominated for a Perrier Award in 2004, she is arguably best known as Judith in the BBC series “Ideal”, starring Johnny Vegas. Born in Coventry, but raised in Cornwall, to an Irish father and Welsh mother, she talks accents, growing up below the poverty line, going untouched by school bullies, her mercurial Irish gran, dad’s naked yoga and the life lessons she’s passing on to her son. Meanwhile – over at The Plastic Pedestal – Patrick, Angela and Niall of Liverpool Irish Centre nominate the fab four of Tommy Walsh, Joe England, Phil Fitzpatrick and John Lennon https://the-plastic-podcasts.castos.com/episodes/jo-neary-cornwall-an-irish-granny-and-other-people39s-voices Photo (c) Steve Ullathorne

In GBA 221 we get better acquainted with Mathilda. She talks about #HowToBeFat, writing werewolf erotica, comedy, writing, performance, parenthood, slash fiction and more. We recorded the conversation in Edinburgh during the Fringe where both of us were doing solo shows that (in different ways) talk about taboo subjects, shame, identity, stigma, privilege and social pressure. We compare notes on doing shows that people might describe as brave.
