A couple of months ago, we released a documentary by investigative Soosty, Soosty Carpripe, about a very brave woman called Emily Curnt, who met what she thought was someone on a dating app, who claimed he was playing Shrek in a touring production of the musical Shrek. But this was a lie: in fact, Emily Curnt was being ShrekFished. The reaction to this documentary was so overwhelming - not just from listeners who believed it to be one of the most award-worthy documentaries of recent years, but from other women who had suffered exactly the same fate. This programme, and its attendant awards submissions, is dedicated to the bravery of these women.Sound Heap was created and hosted by John-Luke Roberts, and featured Tom Bell, Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Josh Gondelman, Kieran Hodgson, Rosie Holt, Sooz Kempner, Anna Leong Brophy, Emily Lloyd-Saini, Hal Lublin, Sarah Morgan, Eleanor Morton, John Norris, Benjamin Partridge, David Reed, Marjolein Robertson, Isy Suttie and Lorna Rose Treen. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

A big week for beginnings this week, with a new Doctor, a new origin story for the Daleks, and a whole new approach to defeating the bad guys. Oh, and a new podcast to discuss them all on. So let's welcome Patrick Troughton to the studio floor, as we discuss The Power of the Daleks. Notes and links The most recent Blu-ray release of The Power of the Daleks was the Special Edition in 2020, which includes a compilation of all the surviving footage, including material shot on an 8mm film camera pointing at a TV screen. This material was also included on the Lost in Time DVD release way back in 2004. Simon also mentions a site which chronicles the upsetting history of Doctor Who's missing episodes. It's called The Destruction of Time, and it's well worth reading, if a bit dispiriting at times. The Omnirumour was a series of rumours arising during 2013 that as many as 90 missing Doctor Who episodes had been found and were ready for return to the BBC Archives, possibly as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations. This didn't happen, obviously, but we did at least get nine episodes: five episodes of The Enemy of the World and four of The Web of Fear. Let's continue the tradition: here is Elizabeth Sandifer's essay on this story, which (inevitably) discusses the importance of mercury to the new Doctor's character. Nathan and Brendan refer to Kieran Hodgson's Bad Doctor Who Impressions version of The Daleks, which is something you should go and watch immediately. James very thoughtfully plugs Brendan and Richard's new podcast about The Avengers, called The Three-Handed Game, in which they are joined by old friend of the podcast Steven B to discuss episodes from different eras in the history of the show. At the end of the episode, Simon recounts the story of the gradual revelation of The Power of the Daleks throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Among the things he mentions are Peter Haining's Doctor Who: A Celebration (1983), the Radio Times Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special (also 1983), The Making of Doctor Who by Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks (2nd edition, 1976), an edition of DreamWatch Bulletin (possibly issue 121 in December 1993) announcing the upcoming publication of the telesnaps in Doctor Who Magazine, and the discovery by Damian Shanahan of some clips from this story in an Australian TV Show called Perspective: C for Computer. Flight Through Entirety discussed The Power of the Daleks in Episode 11: Bum Wetting. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Simon is @simonmoore72. The 500 Year Diary theme was composed by Cameron Lam. For now at least, 500 Year Diary shares a social media presence with Flight Through Entirety. So you can follow us on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at 500yeardiary.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll write next week's shownotes in a completely incomprehensible acrostic code. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Flight Through Entirety will be back at Christmas in July to discuss The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and we'll be covering Peter Capaldi's final year on the show after that, concluding with Twice Upon a Time at Christmas. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be back a couple of days after the screening of the first two episodes of Season 1 of the Ncuti Gatwa Era on 11 May. In the meantime, you can hear our hot takes on the four episodes we've seen of Doctor Who's second RTD era. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first four episodes of Series 1; Episode 5 should be out in the next couple of weeks. Maximum Power will be back later in the year to talk about the final series of Blakes 7. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we said farewell to Star Trek: Enterprise by watching that universally acknowledged Star Trek war crime, These Are the Voyages….

A review of two of the big shows at this year's Edinburgh Festival: Olivier award-winning writer Isobel McArthur has had great success with her genre-busting works Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of) and Kidnapped. Her latest play The Grand Old Opera House Hotel is a rom-com set in a haunted house filled with opera arias – it's worlds apart from Funeral, a calm, interactive meditation on the nature of life and death by the Belgian theatre company Ontroerend Goed. Our reviewers give their verdicts on the comedy shows they've sampled this year. Kieran Hodgson is a Yorkshireman outsider in TV's Two Doors Down: his new show Big in Scotland reflects on identity and belonging; magician and clown Geoff Sobelle explores the comedy of consumption in his show Food; and Sonja Doubleday's comedy of the absurd – Cheekykita: An Octopus, The Universe, ‘n' Stuff – features a nonsense trip through space. The impact of artificial intelligence has been cited as one of the reasons for the current writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood. AI is also the topic at the heart of Courtney Pauroso's Vanessa 5000, which features a sex robot and in Edinburgh University's Inspace gallery exhibition, The Sounds of Deep Fake, where the human voice is put through its paces by AI. Matt Chorley and Patrick Maguire analyse the dramatic scenes at Westminster 50 years ago, when a protest by MPs against rising unemployment caused uproar and led to the Commons being suspended. The events of the day are recreated by actor and impressionist Kieran Hodgson, before Matt speaks to a minister in Edward Heath's government about his memories of the time. Plus Times columnist Melanie Reid and Daily Mirror political editor John Stevens talk about Conservative MPs calling for ministers to negotiate with nurses, the Scottish Government raising taxes, and why we should stop moaning about snow. Doctor Who: the World Enough and Time podcast

It's our 50th episode! To celebrate our golden jubilee we have a quick look back through our podcast archives to dig out some of our favourite and silly moments from the past 4 years. Surprise guests include: @hannahbeeblogs, Kieran Hodgson off Two Doors Down, and the Cailleach! Elsewhere, Nightmare of Eden and Invasion of the Dinosaurs are in the Time-Space Visualiser and the quiz focuses on the life and times of Nicholas Courtney in 'Courtney or Court-nay'. We also review the missing Hartnell historical Marco Polo. Alex has unwisely watched it all in one sitting, while Andy relied on a gatefold LP and Lou & Lalla acting out the entire story in a specially constructed pergola in his back garden while swigging back elderflower presse in straw hats. Several fascinating matters are also discussed in relation to early Who. While Alex suggests that John Lucarotti might actually have nicked Marco Polo due to his preference for radio, Andy recounts what may be the most important Doctor Who memo of all time, written by the director of episode 4 (The Wall of Lies) John Crockett. Andy also reminisces about the time he was almost found in contempt of court and Alex obsesses about horses and distances again. Yes it's exactly what you might expect from an episode of World Enough and Time, only a bit longer than usual - some might say bumper - and a bit more gilt-edged. See the finish! Enjoy! We love you. Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children

Comedy of the Week

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2021 29:18

New comedy from stand-up comedian Ashley Blaker about his unusual home life. In episode one, Ashley considers the downside to having a large family - including a morning routine so challenging it would give Michael McIntyre a heart attack and an almost never ending need to replace phone chargers. Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children is a mix of stand-up and observational documentary, all recorded in the Blakers' unusual home with the voices of his real family, and tackling parenting, adoption and raising children with special needs. The series brings a whole new perspective to the subject of parenting. That is because as parents of six children, Ashley and his wife Gemma are trying to raise a family in a world that is only really set up for having two. What's more, the Blakers' children are not just any kids. Three have special needs – two autistic boys and an adopted girl with Down Syndrome – and Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children sensitively finds the funny in both raising children with disabilities and adoption. The series is written and performed by Ashley Blaker - a comedian who has performed on five continents including tours of the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Israel and Australia. His 2018 Off-Broadway run was called ‘a slickly funny stand-up show' by the New York Times and, in 2020, he returned with Goy Friendly which ran at the prestigious SoHo Playhouse. Ashley is joined by Shelley Blond (Peep Show, Cold Feet and the voice of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider), Kieran Hodgson (three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee), Rosie Holt (online lockdown star with countless viral videos) amd Judith Jacob (EastEnders, The Real McCoy, Still Open All Hours). Also appearing as themselves are Ashley's own children: Ami (17), Ophie (15), Simi (13), Soroh (12), Sruly (11) and Bina (7). Producer: Steve Doherty A Giddy Goat production for BBC Radio 4

Kieran Hodgson tells Michael Berkeley how he turned his lifelong obsession with Mahler, and his own struggle to write a symphony, into comedy gold. Fortunately for us Kieran put aside an early ambition to become a train driver and has instead forged a career as one of our most entertaining actors, writers and comedians. He’s won awards and accolades at Edinburgh for shows on the unlikely subjects of school French exchanges, British politics in the 1970s – and his obsession with late-Romantic music. You might know him from his Radio 4 show Earworms – comic introductions to the great composers – and for his television roles in Two Doors Down, Upstart Crow and God’s Own County. And you might also be one of the tens of millions of people who have enjoyed his ‘Bad TV’ parodies on YouTube. Music is central to Kieran’s life: he’s been playing the violin in amateur orchestras since childhood and composing since he was in his teens. He chooses an unfairly neglected concerto by Bruch; Schnittke’s breath-taking Choir Concerto; and music by Schoenberg, by Bernstein and – in a first for Private Passions – by the Dutch cabaret artist Wim Sonneveld. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode I’m talking to Fast Show legend Arabella Weir and we get nips deep into the horror of having a parent who is absolutely horrible to her about eating and her body. It’s still a funny one though, somehow. And it’s chilly now isn’t it so we hoovered soup to get through it. Everything written below in CAPITALS is a link to the relevant webpage. Honourable Mentions/ LinksYou can GET TICKETS HERE to see Arabella on tour early 2021 with ‘Does my Mum loom big in this?’ And she’s ace on the old TWITTER as well. It’ll help me keep the podcast not just alive, but also thriving. Thanks so so so much if you’ve become a patron recently and/ or stuck with me since the beginning of this. Also - if you’d wanted to donate something as a one-off you can DO THAT HERE on the Acast Supporter page thing. MY TOUR IS RESCHEDULED - COME! As the Brexit Party Ltd’s antics in Strasbourg grow more obnoxious, does the future belong to “trolliticians” who don’t really want to achieve anything – they just want to ruin everything around them? Should Vladimir Putin’s pronouncement that “liberalism is dead” worry us? And character comedian KIERAN HODGSON joins us to explain how his show ‘75’ – about the first EU referendum, and returning to London and Edinburgh soon – tells us much about the 2016 one. And the next one too…?PLUS: Another exciting creative writing challenge! Live impersonations of Roy Jenkins, Enoch Powell and Young Tony Benn. Ros has the ‘Boring But Important Thing Of The Week’. This week we're going back to the 1970s to look at two great mysteries: an unsolved murder in Norway, and Britain's ever-enigmatic relationship with Europe. Norwegian investigative journalist Marit Higraff joins us to talk about Death In Ice Valley, the true crime podcast from the BBC and NRK hoping to uncover the truth behind a woman's death half a century ago. Also delving into the past is British comedian Kieran Hodgson, whose new show looks for laughs in the unlikeliest of places: the story of how Britain ended up joining the EU. Plus: Cold comfort for the Balkans, Amsterdam's war on 'mono-culture', and the secret to living a very, VERY long life. Oh, and the tiniest mention of a certain wedding. Ben Target is an award-winning comedian and one of the most creative and innovative comedians in the U.K. Ben was nominated for Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer for his 53-minute show debut "hour" at the Edinburgh Festival in 2012 and has consistently been a Fringe favourite. Ben has performed all around the world, delighting (and sometimes baffling) audiences with his visual jokes, puns and commitment to his astonishing craft. Target has been working on several film projects, including 'Frank' and 'The Bird' with Joe Parham and Turtle Canyon Comedy. 'Frank' is the story of a reclusive young model maker (Kieran Hodgson) whose unsettling but deeply touching attempt to attract the attention of the woman he loves (Natalie Dibsdale) is sabotaged by his greatest creation. The film was made on a tiny budget – no more than a few hundred quid – and shot in Joe’s house and the surrounding area with the help of friends and relatives. Everything in the film was built or found by Ben and Joe, and Ben constructed Frank’s creation, as Frank himself does, out of stuff he pilfered from a skip (including a set of manikin legs, a supermarket trolley and some discarded military medals.) This homemade aesthetic was crucial to the production, look and ethos of the film. www.turtlecanyonmedia.com/frank The creative team behind 'Frank' are currently in knee deep with their followup film 'The Bird', once again directed by Joe Parham & Ben Target. The film stars BAFTA Award winner and cult comedy favourite, actress Julia Davis and rising star Alastair Roberts. It is a tragic yet touching tale about a son struggling to direct his mother’s attention and affection towards himself and away from a garden bird who visits her every day. The team are currently crowdfunding for post-production to help make this ambitious film a reality, any further help would be hugely appreciated. www.turtlecanyonmedia.com/thebird/birdplea.html www.bentarget.com www.twitter.com/bentarget - Sara Shulman is the Founder and Editor of Comedy Blogedy, TEDxUCL speaker on 'The Power of Funny', former Head of Comedy at UCLU Rare FM and produces the Humour Me Comedy Podcast.
