Book Club #113 - Life Lessons From Historical Women - Richard talks to comedian and writer Eleanor Morton about her book about some notable women from history (some famous, others not so much) Life Lessons From Historical Women. Should Richard with his 2:1 in history have know about more of them than he does? Perhaps. They chat about why women (and non-royalty generally) are so badly represented in history, how history is more fun if you're allowed to be judgemental about the clearly horrible stuff, how even stories from as recently at the 60s show how pervasive certain ideas of women can be, how Eleanor chose her 18 people/groups to write about and how the book is more serious than one might have expected (but still has plenty of funny stuff in it too).Buy the book herehttps://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/life-lessons-from-historical-women-eleanor-morton/7670509?ean=9781804192276See RHLSTP recorded live - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Eleanor Morton talks cartoon crushes, actors who weren't problematic in the 80s but sure are now, and the Yeo Valley Yoghurt Boys with fellow crush addict Margaret Cabourn-Smith. We had an absolute blast in The Swallow Theatre at Machynlleth Comedy Festival.  We gained a beautiful embroidered logo from the lovely @purplestrawbs1 (follow her on Twitter for some gorgeous embroidered love of Taskmaster and Three Bean Salad); found a jar of pickle that went out of date three years ago; and gave a dog some merch.  r In fact we liked it so much we've just signed up to do another live show later in the year at the London Podcast Festival in September.  We will share a booking link when it's live. Margaret's Twitter woes continue - she's still locked out of her account, so do follow us on @crushedbymcs on Twitter, or give in to peer pressure and come and join the cult gang on Substack.  We have some great guests coming up in the next few weeks including Sue Perkins and Nish Kumar - so if you haven't already, hit the subscribe button and make sure you don't miss it.  Til next time! I stumbled upon the short videos this Scottish comedian posts online and was immediately won over by her conversation between C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien: she plays both of them. What comic does C. S. Lewis? Smart, dark, funny: the Triple Crown.

Greg Jenner is joined by Dr Jeremy Filet and comedian Eleanor Morton to learn about the Jacobites. During the 17th and 18th centuries, across Britain and Ireland, the Jacobite movement was at its height. The Jacobites were mainly, but not exclusively, Irish and Scottish Catholics. They wanted the restoration to the British throne of the Stuart line that began with James VI of Scotland who was also James I of England and Ireland. If you're thinking it's complicated, you are right. Across roughly two centuries there were lots of battles and, spoiler alert, the Jacobites did not succeed. In this episode we focus more on the culture of Jacobitism, such as why all the best pub names in the UK are probably Jacobite in origin. We also look at how an illegal, and often brutally punished, revolutionary movement managed to communicate and coordinate in secret across multiple seas and countries. Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

Hot off the presses - it's Margaret's conversation with Angela Barnes earlier this week.  Angela shares some of Margaret's worst crush excesses.  Beardy nerds?  Check.  Comedians from the 1990s?  Oh yes.  Angela's crushes include Kenny Everett (note for anyone born after 1979 - he was a very funny, very gay, very rude primetime ITV family entertainer.  The 80s was a different time).  George Michael gets a mention, as do John Lennon, and a man who once pissed her off so badly she filled his bed with Frosties while he was on a date with someone else. It's a crushed-packed 55 minutes, that's what we're saying. Don't forget to come and join the cult Substack - we post about one thing a week, so you won't be bombarded, and it gives us another way of keeping in touch if Twitter ends up in the bin.  It's looking quite likely isn't it? https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ Quick reminder of our live gig at Machynlleth on 30th April 2023 - we would love to see you there.  We got some badges made, and if that won't persuade you to make the journey to North Wales, I don't know what will.  Our guest Eleanor Morton, maybe?  She's great, and we're very excited about finding out what her crush history is like.  Tickets available here: https://machcomedyfest.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873644691 That's all the admin for this week. #407 Teleporno - Rich has some big questions to ask about a hymn that seemingly most people in his audience don't remember, so maybe he won't do an hour long comedy show about it then. His guest is internet sensation and fab stand up Eleanor Morton. They talk about Leonardo da Vinci's hate mail, the surprise appearance of Pan in Wind in the Willows, the difficulties of getting a pirate sitcom off the ground (or on to the waves), the stinking bins of the Edinburgh Fringe, why crippling social anxiety doesn't stop comedians getting on stage and why the pandemic was the best thing that could happen (for some people, not everyone apparently) and how there are no mentally ill comedians in Richard's generation.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITESee details of the RHLSTP TOUR DATES Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Nestled in the sweet spot of ‘cartoon for kids that adults love, too', the Emmy Award-winning Bluey is a firm favourite in the Offord household. Which means our Jen's trying really hard not to fangirl as she chats to actress Melanie Zanetti, aka Chilli, about Australian cattle dogs, crossing comic boundaries, parenting goals and never meeting your husband. If you're not already a fan of comedian Eleanor Morton's zero-fucks-given tour guide Craig, then get yourself onto the socials for a watch immediately. Or stay here and listen as Mick catches up with Eleanor to talk Craig, what happens when a history fan makes comedy, her Edinburgh show Eleanor Morton Has Peaked, and the joy of out-of-season graveyards. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's quite rightly still wanging on about us winning Euro 2022, and explaining why the Commonwealth Games are more than the poor (wo)man's Olympics. And finally, it was bad enough before Hannah brought innocent donkeys into it… There's vabbing, an Amnesty on decent Twitter etiquette, just desserts for a human heart attack, and the return of Mick's favourite electric sheep in the Bush Telegraph.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast.
