Today, that pioneering spirit is looking skyward. In this episode, Stephen Matier of Maritime Launch Services and Rahul Goel of NordSpace join host John Stackhouse to explore how Canada is closing that gap. Together with Chris Hadfield, they unpack what sovereign access to space means for national security, climate resilience, and technological leadership — and how Nova Scotia and Newfoundland's emerging space sectors are helping bring Canada into the new space age.Because if Canada can't launch its own ideas, it can't lead its own future. Chris Hadfield is the astronaut who turned the void of space into his stage. A farm kid from rural Canada who climbed his way into the stratosphere, first as a fighter pilot, then as a test pilot, and eventually as commander of the International Space Station. Hadfield has lived a life that hovers somewhere between science fiction and sheer nerve. He's flown more than seventy types of aircraft, stared down mechanical failures mid-flight, even blacked out in the cockpit and somehow lived to tell the tale. And then came the moment that made him a legend: drifting through the ISS with a guitar in hand, recording a zero-gravity cover of David Bowie's Space Oddity (the first music video ever filmed in space.) It was haunting, poetic, and a little bit absurd, exactly like Hadfield himself. His newest book, Final Orbit a high-tension space thriller and the third instalment in his Apollo Murders series has just launched into the world and is available everywhere.Host: Dan SchreiberGuest: Chris Hadfield Senior Producer: Ben TullohProduction Support: Cassie MerrittHead of Factual Podcasts: Al Riddel

Astronauts have seen some truly creepy things out in space! One time, a crew on the Apollo 10 mission heard strange, "outer space music" while orbiting the Moon, and it gave them chills. Then there are unexplained flashes of light that astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) report seeing, even with their eyes closed—scientists think they might be cosmic rays zipping through their retinas! Another eerie moment came when Chris Hadfield, a famous astronaut, once saw what looked like a flying object outside the ISS—but it turned out to be a chunk of frozen liquid. Still, some astronauts report seeing things that just can't be explained, like moving lights or objects. Along the way, John shares how a spark of curiosity from a Chris Hadfield novel launched him into grad school, how he's helping democratize astronomy through smart telescopes and best-selling books, and why his family's space-inspired creative projects continue to inspire new generations of stargazers. While we may not think of it very often, music has a long history of influencing how we think about spaceflight. From the scores of early silent films to the modern classics we all know, like 2001: A Space Odyssey and the never-ending franchises of Star Trek and Star Wars, we often have a riff going through our minds when we see a space image—few can hear Strauss' Blue Danube without thinking of the space station in 2001, or see a tilted yellow title scroll without hearing that first orchestral crash of John Williams' immortal Star Wars score. He's the author of Best Team Ever!: The Surprising Science of High-Performing Teams*. There are many things that help teams work well together, but perhaps you haven't thought of this one: clarity. Knowing what is being done and who's doing it often helps a team achieve more. In this conversation, David and I discuss the practical steps to surface more clarity and drive better performance. Key Points Casting a leadership vision is important, but insufficient. It's not helpful to expect a team to figure out roles and responsibilities on their own. Teams work best when they understand how each individual works best. Clarity increased performance. Hold huddles using these three questions: (1) What did I just complete? (2) What am I focused on next? and (3) What is blocking my progress? Consider communicating in bursts to allow for people to retreat into less interrupted time for deeper work. Establish priorities and consistently make those priorities clear so they are obvious and apparent to the team.
