Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

Hello! My guest this week is writer, comedian, actor and all round marvel Katy Brand. Katy is a true crusher, so I know you're going to love the conversation. Apologies in advance though - the sound is a little rougher than the producer likes to let past, but the chat is so good, I thought it was worth it. We talk about so many things - from saving yourself for Jesus, to long lasting devotion to Dirty Dancing, with far, far too many uses of the phrase "god shaped hole". I apologise in advance for that. We have one more brand new episode of the show in 2 weeks time before we take a short hiatus over the summer. I hope you enjoy it! Both the show, and the summer. See you in two weeks! Robin Ince and Brian Cox tackle the thorny debate over whether science and religion can co-exist. But forget the tension between the church and the researchers – Eric Idle wants an answer to the important question of whether God is in gluten free communion bread? Katy Brand launches the inaugural theologian's corner with a pair of Reverends, who explain that comedians and the clergy have a lot in common, including a tendency to like the sound of their own voices. As we learn more about how our universe works, will there even be a need for religious belief? Since some research suggests fundamentalists and zealots tend to be less intelligent, perhaps there's a case to be made for some healthy scepticism.New episodes will be released on Wednesdays. Brian Cox and Robin Ince visit CERN's Large Hadron Collider in Geneva in search of the Higgs boson. Joining them on their particular quest is comedian Katy Brand, actor Ben Miller and physicists Tevong You and Clara Nellist. They find out which particle is the one you'd most want to spend time with at a party, how cosmology is inspiring experiments in the collider and why the Higgs Boson - known as the 'god' particle' - is of so much interest to science.Producer: Melanie Brown Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem

Robin Ince and Brian Cox are still struggling to decide when a strawberry dies as they trawl through the archive to ponder where we should draw the line between life and death. Katy Brand kicks the debate off with her thoughts on whether strawberries have souls, which leads her to wonder whether it might be possible for people to be resurrected? While it's theoretically possible to bring someone back to life, it's not looking likely any time soon. Instead, Rufus Hound talks us through how he'd commit the perfect murder, right down to the use of a woodchipper to destroy any DNA evidence. Little does he realise that this fingerprint of life gets everywhere, including down comedian Susan Calman's pants. Episodes featured: Series 7: Improbable Science Series 8: What is Death? There's nothing like a little light-hearted solicitation to relive your lost youth and discover how amazing sex could be since your, now deceased, boring husband "missionary Martin" never gave it propa'. So, in walks gigolo Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to guide Nancy (Emma Thompson) in her search for the ever-elusive big "O". Just chuck some fit bloke some cash and it'll solve all your problems basically. Some procrastination here, some procrastination there, and that's what Emma Thompson as Nancy does in the sex comedy drama ("sexadramady"?) penned by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde. It's a weird one. At the heart of the film is a sex-positive message that has some genuinely touching moments from the inimitable Ms. Thompson. But when you come down to it, it misses the mark in giving Mr. McCormack enough meat to play with. You'll get what we mean when you give it a listen. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE is currently streaming on HULU in the US.

Have you ever felt like you can't do certain things? What do you do to tackle your own self-doubt?  In this 3rd episode, Viv turns traditional thinking about imposter syndrome on its head, and considers alternative outlooks from her guests. Professor Mary Beard talks about the misogynistic origins of public speaking, dating back to the Roman Empire, and actress Katy Brand says that in her experience, confidence can ebb and flow.  If you find yourself feeling like an imposter,  Paula Hines says that might be because you're working in an area that you're not truly passionate about -  she knows this feeling first hand as she tells the story of moving from a career as a television producer to becoming a yoga teacher. Writer Kit de Waal shares the key to pushing back against moments of insecurity when you feel like a fraud, and sports presenter Gabby Logan says that it's important to be able to learn from your mistakes. These scenes evoke the idea of women taking what they want, mommy issues, letting go, acceptance of one's body and the power of releasing self-judgment. Katy Brand talks to Michael Berkeley about obsession, opera, brass bands and juggling her career as a comedian, actor, novelist and screenwriter. On television, Katy Brand's Big Ass Comedy Show ran for three series and won her a British Comedy Award, and she has appeared in everything from Peep Show to Midsomer Murders. Her stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Festival have been highly acclaimed, and she is a regular on BBC Radio comedy and drama. Katy has starred in musicals such as West Side Story and Everyone's Talking About Jamie; and she has written plays and screenplays – her feature film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, starring Emma Thompson, premiered at the recent Sundance Festival and will be on our cinema screens this autumn. Katy tells Michael about her childhood experience as an extra at the Royal Opera House; her grandfather, the trumpet player and brass band conductor Geoffrey Brand; and her passion for the madrigals of the 17th-century Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo. And she describes the obsessions that dominated her early life, which have provided rich material for her books and comedy shows: her conversion to born-again Christianity as a teenager and her ongoing passion for the films Dirty Dancing and Mary Poppins. Katy Brand and Katherine Parkinson write and star in a new comedy about the online world of influencing, where they play Ruth and Carla – two stars of the online business world. They are bound together by a carefully controlled public image involving lucrative product placement and well paid endorsements. But behind the scenes things are not always so harmonious. We find Ruth and Carla worrying about company finances and plotting their next big move into podcasting to give their shared business a boost. They are taking delivery of all their new equipment when they hear that a rival influencer, Grace Broadstairs, has been rushed to hospital. As she is incapacitated, all her followers are now up for grabs. Wishing Grace well is also a perfect theme for the first podcast episode, A Lovely Chat with Ruth and Carla – if they can just figure out how the microphones work. Award-winning duo Katy Brand and Katherine Parkinson write and star in this sharp new comedy, taking an affectionate swipe at the very modern world of influencing. The podcast A Lovely Chat with Ruth and Carla, as featured in the show, is available as an exclusive bonus in this podcast.
