Sales and Crabb go live in Wagga, a trip eagerly anticipated but tipped up by some typically Byzantine transport hiccups. Nevertheless, the pair manages to visit some dining establishments, buy a frock, leave Crabb's greasy nose-print on the window of a local design joint, and discuss cultural offerings ranging from true crime to Lena Dunham. Sound exhausting? Friend, they've barely started. Tonight we examine a Kevin Kline Performance Trilogy—The Pirates of Penzance (1983), De-Lovely (2004), and A Prairie Home Companion (2006)—three films that showcase his command of musicality, wit, and character across eras. Pirates, adapted from the New York Shakespeare Festival production, was directed by Wilford Leach and preserves Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta for film, with Kline's Pirate King earning a Golden Globe nomination and cementing his theatrical pedigree. De-Lovely, directed by Irwin Winkler, casts Kline as Cole Porter in a stylized biopic featuring an ensemble of contemporary artists interpreting Porter's catalog, blending stage sensibility with cinematic structure. Finally, Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion captures Kline in a live-wire ensemble alongside Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin, merging radio nostalgia with Altman's signature overlapping dialogue. Together, these films chart Kline's enduring legacy as a performer who bridges stage and screen, high art and populist entertainment.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

fWotD Episode 3242: Arthur Sullivan Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 21 March 2026, is Arthur Sullivan.Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (13 May 1842 – 22 November 1900) was an English composer. He is best known for 14 comic opera collaborations with the dramatist W. S. Gilbert, including H. M. S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. His works include 24 operas, 11 major orchestral works, ten choral works and oratorios, two ballets, incidental music to several plays, and numerous church pieces, songs, and piano and chamber pieces. His hymns and songs include "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "The Lost Chord".The son of a military bandmaster, Sullivan composed his first anthem at the age of eight and was later a soloist in the boys' choir of the Chapel Royal. In 1856, at 14, he was awarded the first Mendelssohn Scholarship by the Royal Academy of Music, which allowed him to study at the academy and then at the Leipzig Conservatoire in Germany. His graduation piece, incidental music to Shakespeare's The Tempest (1861), was received with acclaim on its first performance in London. Among his early major works were a ballet, L'Île Enchantée (1864), a symphony, a cello concerto (both 1866), and his Overture di Ballo (1870). To supplement the income from his concert works he wrote hymns, parlour ballads and other light pieces, and worked as a church organist and music teacher. In 1866 Sullivan composed a one-act comic opera, Cox and Box, which is still widely performed. He wrote his first opera with W. S. Gilbert, Thespis, in 1871. Four years later, the impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte engaged Gilbert and Sullivan to create a one-act piece, Trial by Jury (1875). Its box-office success led to a series of twelve full-length comic operas by the collaborators. After the extraordinary success of H. M. S. Pinafore (1878) and The Pirates of Penzance (1879), Carte used his profits from the partnership to build the Savoy Theatre in 1881, and their joint works became known as the Savoy operas. Among the best known of the later operas are The Mikado (1885) and The Gondoliers (1889). Gilbert broke from Sullivan and Carte in 1890, after a quarrel over expenses at the Savoy. They reunited in the 1890s for two more operas, but these did not achieve the popularity of their earlier works.Sullivan's infrequent serious pieces during the 1880s included two cantatas, The Martyr of Antioch (1880) and The Golden Legend (1886), his most popular choral work. He also wrote incidental music for West End productions of several Shakespeare plays, and held conducting and academic appointments. Sullivan's only grand opera, Ivanhoe, though initially successful in 1891, has rarely been revived. In his last decade Sullivan continued to compose comic operas with various librettists and wrote other major and minor works. He died at the age of 58, regarded as Britain's foremost composer. His comic opera style served as a model for generations of musical theatre composers that followed, and his music is still frequently performed, recorded and pastiched. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Saturday, 21 March 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Arthur Sullivan on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.

In this week's episode of High on Home Grown, we're covering a mix of serious reform talk, strange police encounters, and some genuinely wild crime stories: Macky opens with a strong letter arguing why it's time to legalise cannabis in the UK, laying out the case for reform and why the current system continues to fail everyone involved. He then shares a bizarre BBC News story from Penzance, where a cannabis driver reportedly asked police officers for directions, one of those moments where reality feels like some people just dont think..... There's also a quick but worrying one, as gangs are now using drones to locate and steal cannabis farms, highlighting just how far organised crime is willing to go, and how growers are having to think defensively. Dr. Margaret covers an international smuggling case, with two men facing charges for allegedly recruiting women to traffic cannabis out of Canada. A grim reminder of how exploitation still plays a role in prohibition-driven markets. And John wraps things up with political progress in the US, as a Massachusetts bill to double the marijuana possession limit and revise the regulatory framework heads to a conference committee. A move that could bring meaningful change if it clears the final hurdles. Another packed episode full of reform debates, strange decisions, and stories that sound made up but very much aren't.

Broadway obsessions fueled by James Madison High School's Roundabout Youth Ensemble access, including Chess, & Juliet, Good Night and Good Luck, and Pirates of Penzance holding court on Broadway. A Disneylanmd trip where the Millennium Falcon triggered a full system reboot. A New York Auto Show pilgrimage capped by a Bugatti sighting. All the things. The twins talk school pressure, AP classes, learner permit anxiety, pop culture fixation, musical theater devotion, and the strange clarity that comes with turning 15. The humor stays sharp, the details stay specific, and the passage of time stays undefeated. Epic landscapes deserve an equally epic way to travel. We're diving into the romance and reality of rail: why trains make holidays start at the platform, how sleepers turn miles into memories, and which routes around the world are worth planning your next adventure around. We start with five reasons trains win: lower emissions and real sustainability gains, genuine comfort with room to move, dining cars and proper beds on night services, centre-to-centre arrivals that beat transfers, and the human connection that long-haul flights often erase. From there, we share our top 10 rides: Norway's Flåm Railway twisting from fjord to mountain, Scotland's Highlander leg of the Caledonian Sleeper, the Night Riviera to Penzance with a seaside breakfast, Vietnam's Reunification Express and its restful private berths, and Japan's immaculate Shinkansen that makes precision feel effortless. Add New Zealand's TranzAlpine across the Southern Alps, Switzerland's UNESCO Bernina route, Sri Lanka's lush Ella to Kandy journey with open windows and waves, India's Nilgiri Mountain Railway “toy train,” and Amtrak's unhurried yet soulful Coast Starlight. We also open our notebook of dreams. The Ghan across Australia's red centre calls with big skies and outback tones. Canada's Rocky Mountaineer tempts us with glass-domed cars through the Rockies. And South Africa's Rovos Rail pairs classic carriages with sweeping views to Cape Town and beyond. Along the way we share booking tips, comfort hacks, and how to swap premium expresses for local trains without losing the scenery. If you're craving slow travel, rail itineraries, sleeper train advice, or scenic routes that deliver real immersion, this conversation is your map.Got a favourite rail journey we missed? 12-2-25 Tonight we're talking with Matt and Lauren Bloom, owners and meadmakers at Bløm Mead and Cider in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. Bløm Meadworks (pronounced “bloom”), makes modern ciders and session meads – they're light, dry, carbonated, and remarkably sessionable. For their meads, they start with the same ingredients as a traditional mead - honey, water and yeast - which means they can source all of our ingredients from Michigan. They ferment it like a dry craft cider, so the result isn't nearly as thick or sweet as traditional mead. So, if the word “mead” automatically conjures a drinking hall filled with Vikings for you, think of theirs as its friendly, approachable descendants, without the pillage and plunder. After years in the nonprofit sector, Lauren realized that what had become her hobby and outside-of-work stress reliever was actually the thing that she cared about most – food. And more specifically, local food production. Soon after, she joined the board of Slow Food Chicago, an organization that advocates for the value and pleasure of good food for all. A few years later, Lauren and Matt moved to Ann Arbor, looking to put down roots in their home state and open Bløm - a business that would allow them to create sessionable brews and highlight some of the mouth-watering ingredients grown in Michigan. Matt started his professional life as a financial geek. Turned out it was far more exciting to apply those geeky skills to brewing chemistry than options software. He kicked off this new career as a home brewer in Chicago and was lucky enough to have two friends who were passionate enough to start a brewery with him. While owner and head brewer for Begyle Brewing, Matt sadly learned that he was among the unfortunate crew that can't process gluten - his love affair with beer had come to an abrupt end. Hooked on the creative fermentation process, and always intrigued by the quirky possibilities for mead and cider, Matt found Bløm to be the perfect love child of what he enjoys making and drinking. This is both a parody and a cover song! The original parody is by our beloved Filker King, Tom Smith. Go to Tom Smith's bandcamp page to listen to the orig... er, the parody. In the process of getting ready to participate the Filker Song Swap "Cover to Cover: volume 3" various artists albums (organized by fellow Fump artist Madison Metricula Roberts), the randomizer happened to choose that I should cover a song by fellow Fump artist Tom Smith. I was given a choice of 2 songs, but of course I picked the one that is a parody of a song from my favorite musical, "The Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan (the original song being officially entitled "Oh Better Far to Live and Die" but probably better known as "Pirate King"). Anyway, you should really look up the Filker Song Swap albums as well! They're on Bandcamp and several other locations. And then I asked Luke Ski for help getting a group of people together to do backing vocals, but he did such a good job on them by himself that I no longer felt an entire group was needed! And in case you somehow didn't figure this out, the subject matter of the song is Jack Skellington, the lead character of the 1993 Tim Burton stop-motion Halloween film "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Instrumental (real accordion and a Suzuki Andes 25F recorder keyboard!!), mixing and mastering by the wonderful Joe Jakubowski. Lyrics by Tom Smith. Lead vocals by Carrie Dahlby. Backing vocals and "gobble gobble" sound effect by Luke Ski.

Ahoy, GenXers! This week we're revisiting one of the cheesiest, campiest, and most gloriously over-the-top cult classics of the '80s — The Pirate Movie! Originally released on August 6, 1982, this wild ride mashes up The Pirates of Penzance with slapstick humor, ridiculous musical numbers, and more innuendos than we realized as kids. Del Roehling and I (Paul Stroessner) first covered this back on January 21, 2022, and it quickly became one of the most popular Return to the '80s episodes. With Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins leading the charge, The Pirate Movie is part musical, part parody, and pure early-'80s cheese. Does it hold up today? Honestly… we seriously doubt it

When Nick Coffer's marriage fell apart, the breakup was a battlefield. Embroiled in high conflict, overwhelming stress, and crushing legal fees, he had to redefine his role as a father while struggling to maintain his cheeriness as a BBC broadcaster. But from the chaos, Nick forged a new path: re-training as a family mediator. Determined to rescue others from his mistakes, he now shatters stalemates between hostile exes, keeping conversations constructive and focussed on the only people who matter: the divorcing couple's children. In this chat with Olly, Nick shares the game-changing apps that transform toxic communication; reveals how he fell into the trap of becoming a ‘McDonald's Dad'; and explains why mediation can be useful even before you tell your kids you intend to split up…  Nick's mediation services can be found at wayforwardmediation.co.uk The Family Mediators Association is at TheFMA.co.uk —----------------- Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the trend for sleeper trains - by taking Olly and Alix for a ride on GWR's ‘Night Riviera' from London Paddington to Penzance, Cornwall. What are his top tips to ensure you get a good night's kip? Is the rise in overnight train travel because locomotives are so good - or aeroplanes are so insufferable? And how does one store excess luggage when arriving in a place with no car?  Ollie has the answers - though they become increasingly less intelligible after a night in the on-board bar… The team travelled as the guests of GWR. Book tickets direct at gwr.com —----------------- Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from experiencing her first-ever dip in a geothermal pool - tackles a listener's concerns about getting jiggy under canvas. Can sex in tents ever be comfortable? Is it best to use fairy lights, or fumble in the dark? And what are the camping essentials you need to bring along if you intend to get off? Armed with a packet of Fresh Wipes, and aided by author Zachary Zane, Alix reveals all… —----------------- Finally, our record of the month belongs to Will Varley - it's his latest track, ‘Home Before The World Ends' featuring Bastille. _______ BUY US A BEER Your support keeps this show going!
