Potiphar's Wife: The Vatican's Secret and Child Sexual AbuseThe ‘cover-up' of child sexual abuse by the Catholic Church has been occurring under the pontificate of six popes since 1922. For 1500 years, the Catholic Church accepted that clergy who sexually abused children deserved to be stripped of their status as priests and then imprisoned. A series of papal and Council decrees from the twelfth century required such priests to be dismissed from the priesthood, and then handed over to the civil authorities for further punishment. That all changed in 1922 when Pope Pius XI issued his decree Crimen Sollicitationis that created a de facto ‘privilege of clergy' by imposing the ‘secret of the Holy Office' on all information obtained through the Church's canonical investigations. If the State did not know about these crimes, then there would be no State trials, and the matter could be treated as a purely canonical crime to be dealt with in secret in the Church courts. Pope Pius XII continued the decree. Pope John XXIII reissued it in 1962. Pope Paul VI in 1974 extended the reach of ‘pontifical secrecy' to the allegation itself. Pope John Paul II confirmed the application of pontifical secrecy in 2001, and in 2010, Benedict XVI even extended it to allegations about priests sexually abusing intellectually disabled adults. In 2010, Pope Benedict gave a dispensation to pontifical secrecy to allow reporting to the police where the local civil law required it, that is, just enough to keep bishops out of jail. Most countries in the world do not have any such reporting laws for the vast majority of complaints about the sexual abuse of children. Pontifical secrecy, the cornerstone of the cover up continues. The effect on the lives of children by the imposition of the Church's Top Secret classification on clergy sex abuse allegations may not have been so bad if canon law had a decent disciplinary system to dismiss these priests. The 1983 Code of Canon Law imposed a five year limitation period which virtually ensured there would be no canonical trials. It required bishops to try to reform these priests before putting them on trial. When they were on trial, the priest could plead the Vatican ‘Catch 22' defence—he should not be dismissed because he couldn't control himself. The Church claims that all of this has changed. Very little has changed. It has fiddled around the edges of pontifical secrecy and the disciplinary canons. The Church has been moonwalking.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

On this week's episode, Harold and Dennis talk about the prolific career of Val Kilmer. Whatever you know him from, whether it be his iconic roles in Top Gun or Top Secret, he certainly was at the Top of his field. We also talk about the new (to us) viral challenge of what color is the shoe, The Nintendo Switch 2 and the return of Verdansk in Call of Duty. All this and what excuse Lu has for missing this week's episode.

We watched "Top Secret" (1984) and recapped my recent Marvel watching, including Ant-Man Quantumania and The Marvels.
Kevin BrewerTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Kevin Brewer. Kevin is a U.S. Navy veteran, who served for 7 years in multiple overseas duty stations; before being employed by both the Department of Justice (DOJ) & the Department of Defense (DOD). In this episode, we chat about why he joined the Navy, and what his job was in it. We discuss his duties as a cryptologic technician, and what his role was in narco terrorism, money laundering, drug trafficking, counterintelligence, and counter terrorism. Kevin has Top Secret security clearance, and I ask him to tell me all of the secrets! He politely declines, and then we move onto his health issues. While serving in Afghanistan, Kevin developed several serious health issues which culminated in his gaining nearly 100 pounds, and an inability to exercise, run, or even walk to the refrigerator. He was in a pretty dark place both physically and emotionally. He ended up doing a ton of online research and began to figure out some things that turned his health around. Kevin changed his diet, adjusted his mindset, and sought out specialized STEM CELL treatment. Slowly things began to change. Kevin lost some weight, started narrowing down the food items that were triggering him and causing inflammation, and eventually lost the weight. He gives most of the credit to a change in his mental performance and adjusting his perspective. Now Kevin has acquired a depth of understanding with regard to 'Mental Performance Mastery' & 'Heroic Performance', as well as regularly competing in Spartan Races. Kevin's new mission is to share what he has learned and spread the knowledge he has gained during this process. He has a daily affirmation podcast called RISE AGAIN FROM THE STRUGGLE, which has released nearly a thousand 1–2-minute episodes of encouragement & inspiration. Follow Kevin on Instagram at Coach Kevin Brewer and check out his podcast everywhere podcasts are available.

Welcome to Episode 90! I'll be your huckleberry... To honor the recent loss of Val Kilmer, the intention was to have a very Val-centric episode focusing on some of our favorite movies. We got sidetracked, of course. After 35 years, Sean has picked up his trumpet again and joined a local band. This led to a rabbit hole of some of Sean's more interesting band geek stories from back in the day. Given the recent loss of Val Kilmer, Connor wanted to know about other actors we've lost that we miss and we chased that chicken for some time In our Roll for Credits segment, we *finally* got to Val. No reviews, we just talked about some of his more iconic (at least in our minds) movies. We chatted about Top Secret!, Real Genius, Willow, and finally, Tombstone. And as always, geekery, video games, and chickens. Lots of chickens. Thanks for listening, and make sure to give us a 5-star review on your favorite podcasting service! This week, in tribute to the recently departed Val Kilmer, the Regular Joes are rereleasing episode 332: recorded nearly five years ago, in which all five Regular Joes take a look at three Kilmer Klassics. His first starring role Top Secret (1984), fan favorite Willow (1988) and western epic Tombstone (1993). Be advised. Not everything holds up over time. We speak of course of episode 332. Val Kilmer is immortal. Thank you Val!
John's Required Viewing pick for this episode is Zucker-Abrams-Zucker's 1984 spy/Elvis/war spoof, Top Secret!, starring the late, great Val Kilmer in an early, loose-limbed comedic role. After that, Ron gives us the low-down on Drop, the brand-new Blumhouse thriller in theaters now; there's a survey of some recent trailers for films that the guys are excited about; and finally it's time to share a few thoughts on the White Lotus season finale.
Val Kilmer was one of the most eclectic and enthralling actors of his generation and one of the movies that heavily showcased this is this week's movie, “The Salton Sea.” Kilmer showed he could be wacky, like in “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” or deadly serious like in “Spartan” and “The Doors.” In “The Salton Sea” he sort of combines those two and it makes for an entertaining and captivating performance. If you want a movie that leads you down one path, en route to setting an expectation, just to subvert it, and does it multiple times, “The Salton Sea” just might be for you. Kilmer plays Danny Parker, a trumpet player, who has a faithful marriage to a beautiful wife until that all comes to an end. Afterwards, his life becomes a drug-filled downward spiral as he joins the perpetual night party of the tweaker to cope, or is that why he's really doing it? We don't know. He's also a confidential informant for a couple of L.A. detectives who want him to set up a maniacally, murderous drug dealer named Pooh Bear. This is a drug dealer known for killing people suddenly just because he doesn't like the tone of their voice. Also, Danny is told that he's been marked for death for something he didn't do, so things went from beautiful and romantic to pitiful and manic really quick. Is Danny Parker for real, or is he someone else? Will he survive the vortex of violence he finds himself in? Is it worth finding out in this lesser known Val Kilmer movie? Check out my spoiler-free review on this episode to find out! “The Salton Sea” also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Goldberg, Luiz Guzman, Doug Hutchison, Anthony LaPaglia, Glenn Plummer, Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger, Chandra West, BD Wong, R. Lee Ermey, Shalom Harlow, Sherry Knight, Meat Loaf, Azura Skye, Josh Todd and Danny Trejo. This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast, Sean is riding high on a renewed wave of appreciation for one of his long-standing favorites — the Wachowskis' Speed Racer. With a growing fanbase finally recognizing the brilliance of the 2008 cult classic, we dive into what makes it such an enduring visual spectacle. New Releases:
BFG film critic Lani Gonzalez saw 'A Minecraft Movie' at 4 PM on a Friday with her kids, and it wasn't one of the more raucous Minecraft screenings. But it definitely doesn't surprise her that the movie made a tremendous amount of money. Minecraft is the most popular game in the world right now. "The youth of America and the world are bringing energy to the theater," she tells Neal Pollack on this week's podcast. "It gives me hope," Neal says. That said, Lani tells Neal, it was not the best possible movie they could have made, despite Jack Black's tremendous energy. Strangely, Jared Hess, who also made Napoleon Dynamite, directed A Minecraft Movie. What an unusual culture phenomenon.Meanwhile, in the real world, American museums are facing tremendous budget cuts from the Trump Administration. Sharyn Vane joins Neal to talk about this disturbing trend, and highlights the struggles of a basically apolitical children's museum in Madison, Wisconsin, which, like so many other people and institutions, is finding itself caught up in the winds of massive political change. It may not be as dire as we think, or it might be more dire.Val Kilmer died last week at age 65, and Stephen Garrett joins Neal to talk about the work and legacy of one of our more eccentric and talented screen actors. Neal, as is his tendency, pretty much just talks about Top Secret! the entire time, but Stephen broadens the scope a bit and discussions Kilmer's unique filmography and his life as a truly strange and beautiful man of California. RIP Val Kilmer, the world will miss and remember you. This episode is pure BFG: cinematic history, a little politics, a little light pop culture. If you listened to this show, you'd understand everything that's going on. So listen! Thank you very much.

Grab your whip and avoid the monkey brains—this week on Born to Watch, the crew takes on the franchise's wildest, weirdest, and arguably most chaotic chapter, with their Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Review. Whitey, G-Man, and Damo dust off their fedoras and dive deep into the darker, more divisive entry in the iconic adventure trilogy.Released in 1984 as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom was Spielberg and Lucas swinging for something different. What we got was a rollercoaster of tonal shifts, gruesome rituals, screeching sidekicks, and a whole lot of “did that really just happen?” moments. And the Born to Watch crew has a lot to say about it.Whitey opens the show by calling it what it is: a movie that's revered by many, but doesn't quite measure up to the gold standard set by Raiders. For kids of the '80s, it was a VHS staple. But for grown-up podcasters with opinions, it's a tale of two movies—one part rollercoaster fun, one part tonal mess. From the moment Harrison Ford steps off a plane in Shanghai to the heart-ripping Thuggie cult shenanigans in India, the guys unpack every whip crack, every scream, and every questionable creative choice.G-Man shares fond memories of collecting Indiana Jones memorabilia, like those glossy movie programs you'd snag at the cinema. But the nostalgia doesn't blind him—he's quick to call out the film's many plot holes, caricature characters, and some of the worst romantic chemistry in cinematic history. Damo agrees, rating the film a humble “three rewatches” compared to the endless love he has for Raiders. Ouch. And then there's Willie Scott, the club singer-turned-sidekick played by Kate Capshaw (and Spielberg's future wife). The team doesn't hold back on their verdict: screechy, underwritten, and possibly cinema's most annoying scream queen. Compared to Raiders' Marion Ravenwood, she's less “badass adventurer” and more “horny showgirl with a death wish.”But not everything is doom and gloom in Temple of Doom. The pod shines a spotlight on Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), the pint-sized sidekick who stole hearts, especially among the younger viewers. Isabelle, Whitey's daughter, gives him two thumbs up. G-Man draws comparisons to The Goonies and even Star Wars, noting that Lucas may have repurposed some beats from Empire and Return of the Jedi. The mine cart chase? Pure Endor energy. Harrison Ford's smug bedroom banter? Total Han Solo.In classic Born to Watch fashion, the boys rip into the absurdities: Why does Indy carry a full suit in his rucksack? Is a flaming skewer to the gut a valid weapon choice? And what kind of club plays “Anything Goes” on repeat, in both English and Mandarin? These are the real questions. The episode also digs into the bizarre dinner scene at Pankot Palace (chilled monkey brains, anyone?), the film's unexpected legacy in helping create the PG-13 rating, and whether George Lucas' fingerprints are a little too all over this one.And of course, they wrap up with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, featuring killer one-liners, Harrison Ford's bad punches, and enough sound effects to make you think you're in a Looney Tunes war zone. There's even a surprise cameo by Dan Aykroyd (yep, that actually happened) and a nostalgic tribute to Val Kilmer and Top Secret.By the end, one thing is clear: Temple of Doom is the middle child of the original Indiana Jones trilogy. Darker than Raiders, sillier than Last Crusade, and a cult classic in its own right. Whether it's a hit, a dud, or a chaotic blend of both, this episode is a wild ride from start to finish.

Episode 250 of the Not A Bomb podcast is now available! To celebrate this milestone, we're discussing one of our most requested films: Movie 43. This comedy anthology, featuring 20 directors, 15 writers, and numerous A-list stars, was filmed over a four-year period and pays homage to classics like The Kentucky Fried Movie. Movie 43, a film so infamous, is often hailed as one of the worst ever made. But is there any fun to be had in the chaos? What possessed so many A-list actors to sign on? And most importantly: should you watch it… or run screaming in the other direction? Additionally, Brad and Troy want to take a moment to express their gratitude to our amazing listeners for their support throughout these 250 episodes. The Not A Bomb community is fantastic, and we can't thank you enough!Movie 43 is directed by way too many directors and stars a lot of people. Note for next week's show - During this episode the guys mentioned that Inherent Vice as the film for next week. Sadly, the next day, Val Kilmer passed away and to celebrate his amazing career, the guys have decided to discuss Top Secret. Not A Bomb has has plenty of spooky designs in our Merch store!
