On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul and Rebecca Wheele are joined by Joe Howe and Tom Michler, to talk about why it's so important to give youth a sporting chance in life. These include the socialization, the feeling of being – that they belong – is so important for our programme, that activity itself. But, for Joe and I, once you become a part of the St. Louis soccer community you're part of it forever, and it's a wonderful experience of community. We saw a gap with the pay-to-play model, a lot of children that just wouldn't get that opportunity and we knew what the game had done for us, we really wanted to fill that gap. We've both played on teams where there was a lot of talent but it didn't always work. It works when there's an orchestration and you have that experience and success, that's a very powerful experience. The experience of belonging really grounds you and when you see those guys years later it's alive and well in you. That's what we're looking to provide via the field; a sense of belonging while playing sports and having fun also. There's a lot of groups teaching soccer. The important thing is how we go about it and what we're emphasizing in the setting. My background is in mental health and more and more we pay attention to the environment a child is growing up in. The nature vs nurture argument has really moved into environment vs genetics. Our intention is to create a particular environment intentionally that is inclusive, safe and fun. You can't coach every kid the same. Some kids respond to you challenging them and some kids not so much, they can be shy and need coaxing into it. You have to notice that, and some kids really have a load they're carrying so you really have to watch it and really work with them and be conscientious of what they're going through. Professor Joe Howe, chair of the North West Hydrogen Alliance (NWHA) and executive director of the Thornton Energy Institute tells the PSE podcast why we are in desperate need of decarbonisation.

Researchers from the University of Chester in England developed a new technology that can produce energy from unrecyclable plastic waste. The innovation was a result of the partnership between the university's Energy Centre and PowerHouse Energy Group, a company that specializes in developing renewable energy equipment. It is the first technology in the world to use plastic waste to produce energy while also helping bring an end to plastic pollution. Through this new technology, plastic waste does not even need to be cleaned or sorted to be usable. To produce energy, dirty plastics are simply cut into five-centimeter strips and then melted at 1,000 degrees Celsius. As the strips melt, they emit different gases that are then turned into fuel. Joe Howe, a professor at the university's Thornton Energy Research Institute, explained that electricity and fuel are by-products of the entire process. This means that plastic waste could be an important source of fuel for cars and electricity for many cities in the future. The technology was tested for two years at a facility in the University of Chester. In its next testing phase, the researchers will try to use the technology to power a 54-acre plant in England. They will also try it on 7,000 houses for one day and on 7,000 hydrogen-powered cars. If the tests succeed, the developers plan to release the technology in Asia. They are planning to introduce it in Japan and parts of Southeast Asia through a partnership with Waste2Tricity (W2T), an organization that supports projects that seek to generate energy from waste.
