Nir Eyal: The Four Questions That Can Change Any Belief

#699: You've probably heard that mindset matters. But what does that actually mean, and is there science behind it? Nir Eyal, author of Beyond Belief, joins us to break down the research. Eyal, who writes about the intersection between psychology and technology and taught at Stanford Graduate School of Business, opens with a counterintuitive claim: Motivation has nothing to do with rewards, he says. All motivation, he argues, stems from the desire to escape discomfort. That means money management, time management, and weight management are all really just pain management. That reframe sets up a bigger argument about beliefs. Our brains can't process the roughly 11 million bits of information hitting them every second, so instead of seeing reality, we predict it - based on whatever we already believe. That's why two people can face the same circumstances and have completely different outcomes. We dig into why visualization often backfires. Research by psychologist Gabrielle Oettingen found that people who pictured their ideal outcomes became less likely to do the work to achieve them. Athletes don't visualize trophies - they visualize obstacles. Eyal calls the productive version "mental contrasting": imagining what's in your way and planning how you'll handle it. We also cover the difference between limiting beliefs and liberating ones, and walk through a four-question exercise called a "turnaround" - a technique from Byron Katie's inquiry-based stress reduction practice - that helps you examine a belief, test whether it's absolutely true, and consider alternative perspectives. On the topic of quitting versus persisting, Eyal lays out three criteria: Did you hit your checkpoint? Are you still learning? Does persistence actually change anything? If all three answers are no, quitting makes sense. We close on money prioritization. When the math can settle a financial question, run the numbers. When it can't, it becomes a values question - and Eyal defines values as "attributes of the person you want to become." What if the biggest barrier between you and your potential isn't talent - but a belief you've never questioned?Nir Eyal is a behavioral design expert and the bestselling author of Hooked, Indistractable, and his newest book, Beyond Belief. In this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, he explores a deceptively powerful idea: that beliefs operate like the hidden software of the mind, shaping what we notice, what we feel, what we attempt, and what we assume is possible. At the center of the conversation is a problem most of us know very intimately: If we already know what to do, why don't we do it? Nir argues that motivation is not simply about knowing the right behavior or wanting the right outcome. Holding it all together is belief, the often invisible layer that determines whether we think change is possible, whether our effort is worth it, and whether we believe we are capable of following through.Nir breaks down the difference between facts, faith, and beliefs, and offers a compelling reframing: beliefs are not truths, they are tools. From there, he explores the difference between limiting beliefs and liberating beliefs, why the mind defaults toward safety and passivity, and how small acts of agency can begin to reshape what we think is available to us.Mike and Nir also dig into the relationship between pain and suffering, learned helplessness and hope, and the role interpretation plays in human performance. Along the way, they unpack how beliefs shape our attention, anticipation, and agency, and why changing a belief is often less about finding “the truth” and more about testing perspectives that better serve the life we want to live. This is a conversation about motivation, resilience, and the invisible architecture of our inner life. If you've ever felt stuck, frustrated that insight alone isn't producing change, or curious about the mental filters shaping your performance, this one is for you. __________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! Visualising success feels productive. Vision boards, manifesting, picturing the finish line. It gives the sense that you’re moving closer to the goal. But according to the research, that mental shortcut might actually be working against you. In Part 2 of this two-parter (listen to Part 1 here), I continue my conversation with behavioural scientist and author Nir Eyal to unpack why. Nir spent six years researching how beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do, and why the stories we tell ourselves can dramatically change our behaviour. We talk about the surprising power of “failure goals”, why lucky people often manufacture their own luck, and how leaders shape behaviour through the invisible simulations they create at work. Nir also explains why framing matters more than many leaders realise, and why the way you interpret discomfort can completely change how you perform. And when it comes to visualisation, Nir shares a key insight from elite sport. High-performing athletes aren’t picturing themselves standing on the podium. They’re visualising the moment things get hard, and exactly what they’ll do next. Nir and I discuss: Why setting a failure goal can actually increase your chances of success The study that shows why some people experience themselves as “lucky” How beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do in everyday life Why leaders are effectively designing simulations through workplace culture The powerful role of framing when introducing ideas to teams The “believe, anticipate, feel, confirm” loop that shapes our experiences How expectations influence the way we experience products and brands Why visualising the finish line can reduce motivation What high-performing athletes actually visualise when preparing to succeed Key quotes “Failure without learning is a different story. But as long as you are failing and learning, that is progress.” “Athletes aren’t visualising the trophy. They’re visualising the obstacles in their way.” Connect with Nir Eyal on Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website and check out his latest book Beyond Belief. Nir Eyal is a globally recognized authority on behavior design, habits, and human potential. A former lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Nir is the bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable, books that have sold more than a million copies worldwide and have shaped how entrepreneurs and product creators think about behavior change. He's also a serial entrepreneur who has founded and sold multiple companies. In this episode, Nir returns to the show to discuss the ideas behind his new book Beyond Belief, exploring why belief—not knowledge or motivation—is often the missing link between knowing what to do and actually doing it. On this episode we talk about: Why knowing what to do isn't enough—and why people still fail to take action The “motivation triangle” and how belief holds behavior and benefits together Why positive thinking and manifestation can actually backfire The role discomfort plays in motivation and long-term success How entrepreneurs develop “entrepreneurial alertness” and see opportunities others miss Top 3 Takeaways Motivation isn't a straight line—it's a triangle that includes behavior, benefits, and belief. Without belief in the outcome or your ability to achieve it, motivation collapses. Visualizing outcomes alone can decrease your chances of success. Instead, visualize the obstacles you'll face and mentally rehearse overcoming them. Beliefs shape perception. Entrepreneurs often see opportunities others miss because they believe opportunities exist—and their brain actively searches for them. Notable Quotes "Motivation is not about the pursuit of pleasure—it's about the desire to escape discomfort." "Thinking positive can actually be negative if it tricks your brain into believing the work is already done." "Your beliefs literally change what you see. Entrepreneurs don't just think differently—they actually perceive opportunities others overlook." What if the things you believe about yourself and your capabilities aren't accurate? What if you're much more competent than you think you are? We all have mental barriers that shape how we view ourselves and the world. But your beliefs do not have to define you forever. You have the power to rewrite those stories. My guest today is Nir Eyal, a behavioral design expert, international speaker, and the bestselling author. His new book, Beyond Belief, and teaches us how to replace the mental labels that keep us stuck with accurate, empowering beliefs about what we can truly achieve. What if the biggest obstacle standing between you and the things you want in life isn’t your effort, your discipline, or even your circumstances? What if it’s the beliefs you didn’t realise you were holding. In Part 1 of a two-part conversation, I sit down with behavioural scientist and bestselling author Nir Eyal to unpack how our hidden beliefs shape what we see, how we feel, and what we do. Nir spent six years researching his latest book Beyond Belief, exploring the science behind how beliefs influence our behaviour and how we can change the ones that are quietly limiting us. We dive into why rumination feels productive but actually keeps us stuck, why venting about people can reinforce the very stories that make us miserable, and a practical tool called a reality log that helps you see situations more clearly. Nir also shares a powerful technique for questioning beliefs that are causing suffering, using a surprisingly relatable story about a birthday gift for his mum that didn’t go quite as planned. Nir and I discuss: The difference between facts, faith, and beliefs and why beliefs are open to change Why many of our most important life decisions come down to beliefs rather than facts How rumination feels like problem solving but often reinforces limiting beliefs The surprisingly effective technique of scheduling “worry time” How our beliefs shape what we literally perceive in the world Why venting about people can strengthen negative assumptions rather than resolve them How a reality log can help you challenge distorted perceptions A four question technique to examine beliefs that are causing suffering How collecting a “portfolio of perspectives” can help you reduce emotional reactivity Key quotes “Beliefs are tools, not truths.” “We don’t see the world as it is. We see a simulation of the world shaped by what we already believe.” Connect with Nir Eyal on Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website and check out his latest book Beyond Belief. Proof changes everything.  When the world serves you endless "hot takes" about health, habits, and mindset, we need to slow down and build on what actually holds up—methods that work across people and across time.  Today we unpack why evidence-backed tools make personal growth more predictable, less stressful, and far more sustainable, and we put 3 practical techniques in your hands so you can start reshaping your limiting thinking and story-telling right away.  You'll learn how to build a confidence stock—an ongoing log of small wins and improvements that counters your brain's negativity bias and grows self-efficacy. We then pressure-test the stories you tell yourself with a clean filter: does this belief serve you? If holding it for a year shrinks your action and your world, it's time to rewrite it toward utility, practice, and progress.  Finally, we explore self-distancing—third-person self-talk that lowers emotional heat and boosts clarity. This simple shift moves decision-making into a calmer part of your brain, so you can see options, choose a next step, and act with less friction.  Along the way, we highlight how modern, science-backed approaches deliver the predictability you need to navigate fast change without drowning in noise. The result: fewer yo-yo fixes, more consistent outcomes, and a sturdier path to the future self you're building.  If this resonates, share the episode with one friend who's stuck in a limiting story, then subscribe and leave a quick review to help others find us.  Text Me Your Thoughts and IdeasSupport the showBrought to you by Angela Shurina Behavior-First, Executive, Leadership and Optimal Performance Coach 360, Change Leadership & Culture Transformation Consultant

Beyond Belief author Nir Eyal returns to break down why belief — not motivation — is the missing piece behind every goal you've abandoned too early.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1295What We Discuss with Nir Eyal:The number one reason people fail to reach their goals isn't a lack of knowledge or resources — it's that they quit. Motivation isn't a straight line from behavior to benefit; it's a triangle that includes belief. Without belief in both the process and the payoff, perseverance crumbles.Limiting beliefs are invisible cages we mistake for facts. Phrases like "I don't have time," "I'm too old," or "someone like me can't do this" feel like objective truths, but they're actually tools that sap motivation and increase suffering — and most people never stop to examine them.Venting feels productive but actually reinforces the distorted mental image you've built of someone. Instead, Nir uses a "turnaround" technique — asking if the opposite of your grievance could also be true — to collect a portfolio of perspectives and reduce suffering.Visualizing dream outcomes doesn't motivate you — it physiologically relaxes you into inaction. Research shows people who "manifest" goals actually achieve less. What works is mental contrasting: rehearsing how you'll handle the inevitable obstacles and discomfort.Your beliefs are tools, not truths — and you can swap them out like a carpenter reaching for the right instrument. Start examining one belief that's been holding you back, test it with honest questions, and try on a more liberating perspective for a week. Show Notes: Nir Eyal, author of Hooked and Indistractable, talks about his new book Beyond Belief. Nir explains the inspiration for writing the book and the book's purpose: to help people process information and put it into practice. Nir shares his motivation for writing the book, focusing on the psychology of motivation and the importance of perseverance and adaptability. He talks about the missing component in moving from belief to action, and discusses the concept of motivation as a triangle, emphasizing the role of belief in sustaining motivation.  Beliefs Affecting Perception The conversation turns to stories from the book about beliefs affecting perception, such as the Toyota vs. GM prism and the expensive vs. cheap glass of wine experiments that proved the participants actually believed to be truths based on the information received over the facts. Nir explains how beliefs can literally change what we see, citing examples like people on diets seeing food as larger and people with a fear of heights perceiving distances as further. He discusses how brands and luxury goods affect perception. Nir emphasizes that our beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do, and that understanding this can help us improve our lives. Limiting vs Liberating Beliefs When asked how to identify and change limiting beliefs, Nir explains that beliefs are tools, not truths, and that understanding this can help us improve our lives. Applying this approach to relationships to illustrate how it works, he shares a personal story about a conflict with his mother and how he used the Work of Byron Katie to question his beliefs. Nir outlines the four questions from "The Work" that help identify and change limiting beliefs: Is it true? Is it absolutely true? Who am I when I hold this belief? Who would I be without this belief? Magical Thinking vs Mental Contrasting Nir talks about how to apply the belief inventory to other areas of life, such as business and company culture. He explains that beliefs are the operating system of our minds and that understanding this can help us improve our relationships and business practices. He discusses the concept of mental contrasting, which involves visualizing both the desired outcome and the obstacles to achieving it. Nir emphasizes that magical thinking, such as positive thinking without action, can be harmful and that mental contrasting is a more effective approach. Prayer for the Unfaithful On the chapter about prayer in the book, Nir explains that prayer has benefits even without faith, citing a study where people who prayed, even without faith, had better pain tolerance. He shares his experience of interviewing five faith leaders to learn how to pray when uncertain about God. Nir discusses the benefits of prayer, such as longer life, more life satisfaction, and less depression, and how he has incorporated prayer into his life. Setting Failure Goals When questioned about the concept of failure goals, Nir explains that failure goals involve setting goals for how many times you try, rather than focusing solely on success. He discusses the importance of celebrating the process and the journey, rather than just the outcome. Discipline in Practice Nir shares that he has incorporated prayer and improved his relationships through new practices. He discusses the concept of daily mantras, such as "we are all working with the tools we have" and "love is measured by the benefit of the doubt," to help shed limiting beliefs. Nir emphasizes the importance of these practices in improving his psychological well-being and relationships. "Motivation is a triangle. It requires: Behavior: What am I going to do? Benefit: Why am I going to do it? Belief. If you don't have those three areas of your life in concert, all the advice in the world is going to go in one ear and out the other. Beliefs are tools, not truths. The majority of our problems today—cultural, geopolitical, personal—come from the fact that we think our faith is fact, and we confuse facts for what are beliefs. Everything worth having in life is on the other side of discomfort. So if you can learn to manage discomfort through the power of belief, what couldn't you accomplish? Everything." - Nir EyalFresh out of the studio, Nir Eyal, best-selling author of "Hooked," "Indistractable," and the forthcoming "Beyond Belief," joined us in a conversation to explore how deeply held beliefs quietly shape our attention, decisions, and success. Nir shared his personal origin story of childhood obesity that revealed how we escape uncomfortable feelings through habitual behaviors, and progressed through the Hook Model that democratized Silicon Valley's habit-formation secrets for building products like Duolingo and Fitbod. He unpacks the critical insight that the opposite of distraction isn't focus—it's traction—and introduces the Motivation Triangle framework explaining why knowing what to do isn't enough without belief. Throughout the conversation, Nir demonstrates how 90% of our distractions stem from internal triggers rather than technology itself, and challenges the moral panic around AI by drawing parallels to historical fears from the written word to social media. Last but not least, he argues that beliefs are tools, not truths, revealing how our hidden convictions fundamentally alter what we see, feel, and do—and provides a science-backed path for transforming limiting beliefs into liberating ones that unlock previously impossible performance.Episode Highlights[00:00] Quote of the Day by Nir Eyal[01:02] Introduction: Nir Eyal[04:45] Hook model democratizes habit-forming product secrets[06:42] Startups sell painkillers not vitamins[08:59] Traction versus distraction defines intentional living[10:24] Distraction is behavior not medical addiction[11:28] AI triggers predictable moral panic cycle[14:21] First generation without mass starvation faces excess[16:58] Hook model: trigger action reward investment[23:26] Persuasion helps people achieve their goals[29:39] Internal triggers cause ninety percent of distractions[32:36] Indistractable readers didn't implement the steps[34:46] Motivation triangle requires behavior benefit belief[36:19] Steve Jobs willed reality through liberating beliefs[43:43] Facts beliefs faith require intellectual humility[45:41] Beliefs are tools not truths[48:32] Beliefs reshape attention anticipation agency[51:30] ClosingProfile: Nir Eyal, author of "Beyond Belief", "Indistractable" and "Hooked"Main Site: https://www.nirandfar.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nireyal/Podcast Information: Bernard Leong hosts and produces the show. Another mind bending podcast with Jennifer Shaffer and Rich Martini inviting Luana Anders and her clipboard to talk to us from the flipside. In today's edition, Amelia Earhart comes forward to talk about our appearance on Gaia's #BEYONDBELIEF the previous week where we spoke about her and the book SHE WAS NEVER LOST: THE AMELIA EARHART SAGA.  Then Heath Ledger stopped by, as he knows one of Jennifer's clients that she's speaking with this week.  I heard Robert Duvall's voice in my kitchen the other day, and wondered if he might want to speak. Since he worked with Sally Kellerman on the film MASH (directed by Robert Altman) I thought perhaps Robert or Sally's pal Bud Cort might stop by for a chat from the flipside. As it turned out "one of the two" was willing to take our speaker's chair and answer our questions. That was the acclaimed actor Robert Duvall - and as one can observe in the podcast, it was a long time before Jennifer realized who I was referring to. All of the folks that I asked about are either on the flipside, people that he worked with (Marlon Brando, Fred Roos, Robert Towne, etc) and I asked him if he had messages for some of his pals still on stage (Dustin Hoffman, Francis Coppola, his wife Luciana, etc.)  He recalled having lunch with me in a noisy cafe in Santa Fe (Luana and Gene Hackman were there as well.)   Again - the reason we do this podcast is to demonstrate how easy it is to speak to our loved ones offstage. They're eager and waiting to converse with us - and there are three methods one can use to learn new information from them. 1. Hypnotherapy. I recommend the four to six hour session as done by therapists trained by the Newton Institute. 2. Guided meditation. A person can open themselves up to a conversation using meditation. 3. Mediumship. People like Jennifer who work with law enforcement agencies daily, pro bono, so I know how effective she can be.  In this case, I have had conversations with, or talked to all of the people mentioned in this episode.  I've written and or directed 10 feature films - many have never heard or seen any of them, but either my relationship with Luana Anders, Charles Grodin, or the actors I've worked with before allows me to use the "six degrees of separation" idea to converse with them - or have our pal Luana Anders invite them for a conversation. I've been doing this now for two decades - I met Jennifer about 11 years ago, and we've been doing this weekly for all that time. So it's not like we don't have our own language to speak with each other.   We did appear on Gaia's BEYOND BELIEF last week, which will air sometime soon and is about the book SHE WAS NEVER LOST; THE AMELIA EARHART SAGA. (There are some clips and previous podcasts about the book at the "Hacking the Afterlife" podcast page on YouTube. #RobertDuvall, #HeathLedger, #CarlWeathers, #PaulNewman, #GeneHackman, #SallyKellerman, #BudCort, #CharlesGrodin Enjoy.

Jennifer and I are getting ready to film a segment at Beyond Belief about all the research regarding Amelia Earhart - so I pulled this file from three years ago to demonstrate that every time Amelia Earhart shows up - she's outside of time as we understand it. Can answer questions about her path and journey - even when I repeat the same questions years apart. For thos familiar with the book SHE WAS NEVER LOST: THE AMELIA EARHART SAGA - it was 40 years ago when I started researching her life and journey. It was 30 years ago when I tried to direct a feature film with my friend Rebecca Broussard, who could have been her twin at the time.  Film director Phillip Noyce was going to produce - but for whatever reason, it didn't get off the runway.  However, the story kept coming back to me in various ways - and finally I decided to put together all the research, including a trip to Saipan in 2013 where I found 15 new eyewitnesses to her story - including US Marines who found her Electra on Aslito airfield, who guarded it, watched it test flown and then watched as the military decided to "get it out of the way." And earlier version of the govt covering something up and then pretending for decades that they didn't find it - didn't fly it - didn't recover her briefcase with her passports, maps and charts.  She was never "lost" - the US knew where she was, but because they learned it via the secret codes of the Japanese, they couldn't reveal that they knew. The Japanese knew where she was - and was likely hoping to use her in some fashion, but never got to.  So Jennifer and I are going to talk about her on Gaia, on the Beyond Belief show - and go over the two aspects of getting this story told - the details of forensic research, as well as the details from the Flipside - some of the more incredible clues that she put in front of us to tell her story in a way that's never been told before. The sound is a little screwy - I was on the road at the time we did this podcast, so apologies to those who are tuning in on the car radio - but it is what it is.   Thanks for tuning in!

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country … and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. … And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” (Luke 1:39a, 40, 41b-44)
