Filling in for Adam Holz once again, Plugged In's Paul Asay joins Brian for a fun Friday lineup. They dig into Coyote vs. Acme, the long-shelved live-action/animated hybrid where Wile E. Coyote finally sues Acme Corporation (run by Foghorn Leghorn) for decades of exploding gadgets, now getting a theatrical release after a distributor rescued it from Warner Brothers' tax write-off shelf. Paul highlights its nostalgic charm and message of persistence, alongside some mild language and cartoon violence parents should weigh. They also cover Beyond Belief, a Christian throwback film set in the 1980s Christian music scene featuring cameos from the actual band Petra, following a teen guitarist who takes a literal word from God — "run" — as a call to train for a marathon on the same day as his band's make-or-break battle of the bands.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This month, we're releasing two versions of an episode that we already released years ago! Why? Because we love this episode, and we thought it'd be a fun one to do on the road for our 20th anniversary shows last year. Turns out it was!"Prelude to a Fish" is one of those episodes that just came together, from its original ridiculous idea ("what if The Little Mermaid but also Splash but also Creature from the Black Lagoon?") to the final touch, which was a riff on "Kiss the Girl" written by our friends Paul and Storm. Paul and Paget, of course, play it perfectly every time, and the WorkJuice Players who appear as animals are absolutely hilarious and have a blast out-sillying each other. We first staged this episode at SF Sketchfest on Jan 25, 2014 and then again at Largo in LA during our regular monthly run on Feb 1, 2014.This recording is from the "Our Favorite Episodes" show at the Bell House in Brooklyn on Sunday, Oct 26, 2025. Nir Eyal is a bestselling author, behavioral science expert, and keynote speaker who helps individuals and organizations understand how psychology and technology shape human behavior. He is the author of the bestselling books Hooked, Indistractable, and Beyond Belief, which have sold over one million copies, been translated into over 30 languages, and earned recognition from The New York Times, Amazon, Audible, and The Globe and Mail. A former Stanford Graduate School of Business lecturer, Nir has worked with organizations, including JPMorgan Chase and the US Air Force and invested in companies including Canva and Kahoot. He helps people build better habits, improve focus, and reach their full potential. In this episode… Why do some people turn knowledge into lasting change while others remain stuck in the same patterns? We have access to more books, podcasts, and expert advice than ever before, yet lasting transformation often feels out of reach. If information isn't the problem, what is the missing piece that drives real change? Nir Eyal, bestselling author and behavioral science expert, says lasting change begins by examining the beliefs behind our actions. He explains that sustained motivation depends not only on knowing what to do and understanding the benefits, but also on having beliefs that support persistence. Rather than treating beliefs as fixed truths, Nir encourages viewing them as tools that can be tested and reshaped. He illustrates this through examples ranging from Serena Williams' coach using "belief hacking" to build confidence to Amazon's "Day One" philosophy of continual innovation. He also shares practical methods, including inquiry-based stress reduction, to help people challenge limiting beliefs, improve relationships, and unlock greater personal and professional potential. In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, host Dr. Jeremy Weisz sits down with Nir Eyal to discuss how beliefs shape performance, leadership, and personal growth. They explore why persistence matters more than talent, how leaders cultivate empowering beliefs, and practical ways to reframe limiting mindsets. Nir also shares why questioning common psychological assumptions can lead to better decisions and lasting change.

What if your biggest leadership limitation isn't your strategy, skills, or team—but a belief you've never questioned? In this episode, Lisa G. sits down with bestselling author Nir Eyal to unpack the hidden beliefs that shape how CEOs see problems, anticipate outcomes, and decide what's possible. They explore how leaders can test assumptions, challenge organizational limitations, and plan for discomfort instead of relying on positive visualization. Ready to challenge the belief that's quietly limiting your leadership? Listen to the full episode, then explore Nir's work at NirAndFar.com and read Beyond Belief. Don't just change what you do. On this episode of Expanded Perspectives: From the Archives, we revisit a fascinating conversation with author, researcher, and longtime explorer of the unexplained, David Weatherly.David is a true Renaissance man of the strange and supernatural. For decades, he has traveled the world investigating ghosts, cryptids, UFOs, ancient mysteries, magic, psychic phenomena, and the many things that seem to exist just beyond the boundaries of our understanding. Nir Eyal has spent his career studying why people do what they do - and he'd come to a frustrating conclusion. He'd handed readers the answer to distraction on a silver platter, and most of them still didn't act on it. Knowing what to do wasn't enough. Wanting the outcome wasn't enough. Something further upstream was making the decision. That something is belief: convictions you never consciously chose, inherited from parents, teachers and offhand comments, that you've been lugging around ever since. And they're almost never about the past. They're predictions about a future that hasn't happened yet. I'm no good at this. I'm not ready. It's too hard. In this conversation with St John Craner, Nir walks through the four-question process he runs on himself two or three times a day, and demonstrates it live on a belief he'd carried for decades about his own mother - a story that starts with a bouquet of half-dead flowers and ends somewhere he didn't expect. He explains why a commodities trader was able to undergo a 55-minute operation completely awake with no anaesthesia, and what that reveals about the gap between pain and suffering. And for anyone who has ever said "I'm just not good at sales," he makes the case that nobody is born a salesperson - they've simply had more practice persuading. Nir Eyal is the author of Hooked, Indistractable, and the New York Times bestseller Beyond Belief, which have sold more than a million copies in over 30 languages. A former lecturer at Stanford's Graduate School of Business and a student of BJ Fogg, his frameworks shaped how Silicon Valley thinks about behaviour design. What if the most important thing you teach your students about money has nothing to do with budgets, credit scores, or compound interest? What if it starts with what they believe? In this special episode for teachers, Nir Eyal shares key ideas from his newest book, Beyond Belief. He connects these ideas to inner narratives students and teachers carry about money, time, and their own impact. Nir unpacks the science of how beliefs about money, potential, and about what's possible are formed early and shape everything that follows. Join us to explore how to help students notice and "stress-test" their beliefs against real-world examples, while also getting tools to examine assumptions about what's possible in your classroom and in your own financial life.
What if the stories you've been telling yourself about your betrayal — about who you are, what you're capable of, and whether you can heal — aren't facts at all? What if they're just beliefs? And what if beliefs can change? In this powerful episode, Dr. Debi sits down with Nir Eyal, bestselling author of Beyond Belief, Indistractable, and Hooked, for a conversation that will fundamentally shift how you see your own healing journey. Nir is one of the world's leading thinkers on behavior change and human potential, and what he shares here is directly relevant to everyone navigating betrayal recovery. Nir breaks down the critical difference between facts, faith, and beliefs — and why understanding that distinction is the single most important thing you can do to stop suffering. You'll hear about the science behind limiting beliefs, why your brain is actually designed to keep you stuck, and how something as seemingly small as a shift in perspective can produce results as dramatic as a rat swimming 60 hours instead of 15 minutes. You'll also discover why 80% of healthcare spending goes to illness (not sickness), what surgery without anesthesia reveals about the power of your mind, and why the biggest limiting belief of all — that feeling bad is bad — may be what's keeping you from your breakthrough. This episode is for everyone who's ever said, "This is just who I am," or "I can't change," or "I'll be okay once they admit what they did." Nir gently but firmly challenges all of it — and gives you the tools to challenge it yourself. Topics Covered: The critical difference between facts, faith, and beliefs — and why it matters for healing Why beliefs are "tools, not truths" and how to start using them differently What learned helplessness research got completely wrong — and what the truth reveals about your potential The Hope Floats study: how rats swam 60 hours instead of 15 minutes — and what that means for you Why your brain is wired to keep you stuck (and how to work with it, not against it) The difference between sickness and illness — and why 80% of healthcare spending misses the mark How Daniel Giss underwent a 55-minute surgical procedure with zero anesthesia using only the power of his mind The fear-pain-fear loop and how it amplifies betrayal trauma The surprising science of prayer and pain tolerance — even for people with no faith tradition How placebos work (and why open-label placebos outperform leading medications for IBS) Why your memories aren't as accurate as you think — and why that's actually good news The story of Dashrath Manjhi — the man who moved a mountain (literally) for 22 years Inquiry-based stress reduction and the one question that can unlock everything: "Could the opposite be true?" The biggest limiting belief holding people back: feeling bad is bad Dr. Debi shares research from 100,000+ betrayal survivors on the gut-betrayal connection A powerful story of a woman who healed a 70+ year digestive issue in two weeks of betrayal recovery Resources Mentioned: Nir Eyal's website & free 5-minute Belief Change Journal: NirAndFar.com Beyond Belief by Nir Eyal Indistractable by Nir Eyal Hooked by Nir Eyal The Five Stages of Betrayal Recovery™ — ThePBTInstitute.com Post Betrayal Syndrome® Assessment — ThePBTInstitute.com Betrayal to Breakthrough: Live — ThePBTInstitute.com/live Connect with Nir Eyal: Website: http://nirandfar.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nireyal/ Instagram - http://instagram.com/nireyal Book: Beyond Belief geni.us/beyondbelief Free belief change guide is here: https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief-live Bonus content and the 30-Day Belief Transformation Journal is here: https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief Connect with Dr. Debi Silber: Instagram: @debisilber Website: ThePBTInstitute.com Join Betrayal to Breakthrough: Live: ThePBTInstitute.com/live

Mike Bodayle is a semi-retired insurance company executive. His favorite things in life are proudly displayed in the images on the four luggage tags found on his suitcase: the Yankees logo, a cassette mix tape, a slice of pizza, and the Starbucks logo. In the mid-1970s Mike wrote about music for his college newspaper. From 1995-2001, Mike published Beyond Belief, an Elvis Costello international fanzine. In 2016, he left printed media for two blogs: The Pizza Snob and Music City Mike. In 2025, Mike published A League of His Own, the family memoir he'd long dreamed of writing. I've read A League of His Own and can tell you it's a highly detailed, personal accounting of his family, focused largely on his beloved father's adventures with softball, baseball, and life. This led Mike to develop his seminar, How and Why to Write a Memoir, which has returned him to his love of public speaking.Mike's first work of fiction, Music Leads to Murder, is soon to be published. It was inspired by his passion for rock music and his love of murder mysteries, New York City, and London. So, for all those reasons and many more, I'm delighted to welcome the writer and speaker, Mike Bodayle, to StoryBeat today. Mike, I'm so glad to have you join me on the show!

So when I heard that the expert I spoke to in that video was finally coming to the UK, I knew I needed to make a recording happen. Nir Eyal is an author and lecturer who has spent years studying what makes humans tick, how habits actually form in the brain, why we're all so distracted and what people who achieve extraordinary things actually do differently with their days. What if your motivation problem is actually a belief problem? We often assume that knowing what to do and understanding why it matters should be enough to change our behavior. Yet knowledge rarely produces lasting action on its own. The missing ingredient is often the belief that our effort will make a difference. In this episode of The Good Leadership Podcast, Charles Good speaks with Nir Eyal, New York Times bestselling author of Hooked, Indistractable, and his new book, Beyond Belief.Nir explains how beliefs function as working models of reality, shaping what we notice, what we expect, how we feel, and what we ultimately do. Rather than treating beliefs as unquestionable truths or relying on empty positive thinking, he offers a science-backed approach to developing beliefs that are useful, empowering, and open to revision when new evidence emerges. This conversation is not about pretending that obstacles do not exist. It is about developing beliefs that help us see reality more clearly, persist through discomfort, and recognize where our actions can meaningfully influence the outcome.NIR EYAL is a globally recognized authority on behavior change and human potential. His frameworks have empowered millions to build better habits, enhance focus, and unlock greater agency in their lives and work. He is the New York Times bestselling author of the international bestsellers Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products and Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, which have sold over one million copies in more than 30 languages. Why do people know exactly what they should do but still fail to take action?Nir Eyal, bestselling author of Beyond Belief and one of the leading voices on behavior design, explores why knowledge alone rarely changes behavior. He explains how belief influences motivation, persistence, and decision-making, introducing practical frameworks that help people recognize limiting beliefs, overcome self-imposed barriers, and create lasting change in both business and life.He discusses why persistence matters more than intelligence, how beliefs shape customer behavior as much as personal behavior, and why marketers, leaders, and business owners should focus on building belief instead of simply providing more information or incentives. The conversation also explores the psychology behind motivation, chronic distraction, perception, prayer, and personal transformation, revealing how changing the stories we tell ourselves can reduce unnecessary suffering while creating greater resilience, stronger relationships, and more meaningful results. What You'll LearnWhy belief matters more than motivationThe missing link between knowledge and actionHow limiting beliefs hold people backA simple framework for changing your beliefsWhy persistence predicts long-term successHow marketers become belief buildersThe difference between pain and sufferingUsing daily rituals to create lasting changeIf you struggle to stay motivated, help clients follow through, or inspire lasting behavior change, you're not alone. Roxy's Ride & Inspire RAWcast - Mountain Bike & Mindset Podcast
Starting with a simple mountain biking example ("I'm bad at left corners") the conversation expands into a much deeper discussion about ADHD, fear, confidence, labels, self-concept, and why what comes after the words "I am" may shape your future more than you realize. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs begin when we stop saying "This is who I am" and start saying "This is what I'm learning."Because the thing is, many of us carry labels we've repeated for years:"I have ADHD.""I'm not confident.""I'm bad at this.""I'm just an anxious person.""I'm not athletic.""I've always been this way."But what if some of those labels have quietly become limitations? In this final part of my conversation with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we explore the powerful connection between identity, self-belief, and human potential. Nir shares his own experience with ADHD and explains why diagnoses, labels, and personality traits can sometimes become self-fulfilling prophecies that keep us stuck, because they can narrow what we believe is possible.

We discuss the impact of AI and short-form content on the human mind, the science behind motivation, and why beliefs not information are the missing link between knowing what to do and actually doing it.This episode also covers scrolling addiction, po*nography, alcohol, cannabis, food, productivity, quitting vs persistence, hope, prayer, neuroscience, and the powerful frameworks Nir uses to overcome internal triggers and build an indistractable life. We also dive into liberating beliefs, emotional resilience, and how to transform struggle into growth without turning it into suffering. This podcast is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Behavioral Psychology, Productivity, Habit Formation, Self-Belief, Mental Performance, Focus, Personal Growth, Leadership, Neuroscience, and Building an Indistractable Life.00:00 – A Podcast That Could Change How You Think03:20 – Is AI Rewiring Your Brain?06:47 – Why Your Brain Loves Bad News11:56 – Why Focus Is Harder Than Ever13:16 – Can You Reinvent Yourself?14:50 – The Biggest Challenge Facing Young Generations17:18 – Progress Vs Distraction26:32 – Hope vs Talent30:18 – How To Quit Smartly38:23 – Dealing With Criticism, Fame & Self-Doubt40:41 – How Your Beliefs Shape Reality42:54 – The Belief That's Holding You Back53:50 – Turning Pain Into Purpose59:36 – One Mindset Shift That Changes Everything1:04:40 – Responsibility vs. Happiness1:07:58 – The Story You Need to Tell Yourself1:12:40 – Building Unshakable Self-Belief1:17:25 – Can Prayer Improve Mental Health?1:24:12 – A Smarter Way to Pray1:26:47 – The Biggest Takeaways

Roxy's Ride & Inspire RAWcast - Mountain Bike & Mindset Podcast
What if the biggest thing holding you back is a belief you've never questioned? In this special interview (part 2 of 3) with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we move from understanding beliefs to learning how to change them. Many of us can recognize limiting beliefs:"I'm too old.""I'm not good at this.""I don't have time.""I'll never get better."But once you've identified a limiting belief, what do you do next?In this episode, Nir shares the most powerful mindset exercise I've ever learned—a simple but profound framework for questioning the stories that create suffering and keep us stuck.Using real-life examples, including a story about his own mother, Nir explains how to uncover hidden assumptions, challenge long-held beliefs, and replace them with beliefs that create more freedom, motivation, and possibility.
Behavioral designer Nir Eyal sits down with Jeremy Au to unpack the ideas behind his New York Times bestseller Beyond Belief. He explains why information alone never changes behavior, why your limiting beliefs stay hidden like your own face, and how the motivation triangle of behavior, benefit, and belief decides whether you actually follow through. Nir breaks down the research showing why manifesting and vision boarding can backfire, what athletes do instead with mental contrasting, the crucial difference between pain and suffering, and the four-question turnaround he used to repair his relationship with his mother. The episode closes with a live coaching session where Jeremy rewrites his own beliefs about exercise. For founders, operators, and investors across Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia, this is a practical playbook for the inner game of building. Burnout, self-doubt, and stalled goals are common across Southeast Asia's startup ecosystem, and Nir's framework offers a science-backed way to spot the beliefs quietly capping your potential and swap them for ones that serve you. What if one of the strongest predictors of how long you live isn't your diet, fitness routine, or supplements... but your beliefs about aging? In this special interview (part 1 of 3) with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we explore the surprising science behind beliefs and how they shape what we see, feel, and ultimately do.Many riders over 35 tell themselves:"I'm too old.""I'm not athletic enough.""Mountain biking is too dangerous."But what if these aren't facts at all?In this first part of our conversation, Nir explains the difference between facts, faith, and beliefs, why beliefs are powerful predictions about the future, and how they can become self-fulfilling prophecies that influence everything from confidence and performance to health and longevity.
Another fun episode. In this episode, we talk about the amazing adventure going to the set of Beyond Belief with Jimmy Church talking about Amelia Earhart. Amelia shows up to give her two cents about the show , then Prince shows up to remind us that June 7th is "Prince Day" - and reiterates we should dance, sing, play some of his tunes... why not? I ask a question to Stephen Hawking about his journey - he makes a joke about speeding away from the Epstein files... and I ask him about that as well. Mind bending stuff. (not going down that path, but did ask him if he feels embarrassment or any reaction) - then "Five" steps in to rescue him and talk about the akashic library. All in all another mind bending session. enjoy!
Your to-do list is destroying your productivity, and Nir Eyal has the research to prove it. In this episode, Igor sits down with the bestselling author of Hooked, Indistractable, and Beyond Belief to dig into why 90% of distraction has nothing to do with technology, why time boxing beats every to-do list ever created, and why the most dangerous thing an entrepreneur can believe is that they can't.
Can you truly break through your own limitations and achieve what seems impossible? Today, I sit down with my friend Nir Eyal, the author of three bestselling books, including his latest, *Beyond Belief*, which just hit the New York Times bestseller list. Nir recently blew my mind when he told me he doesn't "believe in jet lag" after flying from Europe to Asia, and that was just the appetizer for our conversation. In his typical science-backed style, Nir reveals the surprising research behind why some people persist where others quit, and how our beliefs—not always our circumstances—are often the key to unlocking our full potential. He shares practical, data-driven strategies I'm already applying in my own life and creative work, and I think you will too.Timestamps:00:00 Introduction01:26 Belief and Placebos05:25 Why Placebo Effect is Getting Stronger06:59 When Pain is Not Suffering10:10 Hypnosedation and Unlocking Potential15:35 Applying Beliefs to Creative Process19:10 Chasing Happiness vs. Decreasing Suffering21:47 Why Positive Thinking Can Be Harmful26:34 Applying Belief-Shifting to Relationships31:03 Changing Your Mind and Beliefs35:35 Belief Problems, Not People Problems37:25 High Expectations, Low Control Leads to Burnout40:03 Internal vs. External Locus of Control44:27 The Rat Experiment and Persistence47:47 What's Next for Nir EyalIf you enjoyed this episode, please like and subscribe, share it with your friends, and leave a review.
