Josh Goldberg is an attorney who is faced with a dilemma. Stuck in Houston, his girlfriend Keisha is about to give birth to their child in a Cincinnati hospital. Standing between them is the worst storm in recorded history. Josh has a decision to make, especially when he finds that Keisha's obstetrician is her old flame: in a rented Lincoln Town Car, and accompanied by his alcoholic colleague Geoff and self-centered conniving boss Diane, Josh sets out on a dangerous odyssey to get to Keisha. Along the way, Josh and Keisha both consider what they really want in life and what will happen next, if the storm doesn't kill Josh first. "Reap the Wind" is the latest novel from Joel Burcat, and he comes to the Brown Posey Press Show to discuss his stories, characters and how his many years as an environmental attorney shaped his second career. His previous works, "Drink to Every Beast," "Amid Rage" and "Strange Fire" bring courtroom drama and our current environmental crisis front and center.  Now retired, Joel was selected as the 2019 Lawyer of the Year in Environmental Litigation for Central Pennsylvania by Best Lawyers in America. He has also edited non-fiction books on envirinmental and energy law and is the author of numerous professional articles on environmental law. He lives in Harrisburg, PA.

"Reap the Wind" is a novel with climate change as big part of the story

Even though climate change may be a fact of life today and especially moving forward, there aren't many books or stories that make a changing climate part of a fictionalized story. Retired environmental lawyer and now novelist, Joel Burcat has done just that, weaving a love story, self-reflection, ambition and a few twists into his new book Reap the Wind. On The Spark Wednesday, Burcat said his four books have all been inspired by his work as and environmental and energy lawyer,"My first one was called Drink To Every Beast. And that is a novel about dumping hazardous waste in the Susquehanna River. My second novel, Amid Rage, is about a coal mine permit battle. And my third novel, Strange Fire, is about fracking. So when it came time for me to write a new novel, it was just natural that I would write a novel about climate change. Plus, climate change really is the existential issue of our time. And I really felt that I wanted to do what I'd done in my previous novels, which was to educate people gently the way I like to do that, about climate change through fiction." Reap the Wind includes a debate about climate change through the mouths of the characters. Burcat described the books' plot,"Reap the Wind is, The Perfect Storm meets The Firm. So we all remember both the book and the movie. The Perfect Storm about the most horrific, storm ever to hit the northeast, happened about 20 years ago. And The Firm, of course, is John Grisham's great novel about a law firm. That is a very, very dangerous place to work. And, my story is kind of, what would happen if those two stories came together? So, the basic premise of my story is that a young lawyer who is named Josh Goldberg is sitting in his firm's seminar that they're putting on down in Houston, Texas. Bored out of his mind. He just wants to go visit with his girlfriend who's up in a room, and outside is a raging hurricane. And, unfortunately, what happens? She is eight months pregnant and decides ultimately that she's going to head back to Philadelphia, which is where they're from. He has to stay because he's on the program for the next morning. So she gets on an airplane and starts flying off to Philadelphia, only to be diverted to Cincinnati and then ultimately to end up in the hospital. So I can tell you that much without giving too much away of the story, the the important thing is, and this is really what the story is all about, is he decides that he's got to be with his girlfriend, Kiesha Jones. He's got to be with her, because she may be having their baby. She's over eight months pregnant. She may be having their baby, and he wants to be there. But nobody is flying. Nobody. There are no trains running. There's no nothing. He ultimately is able to rent a Lincoln town car from his friend, the limo driver, and he and his best friend, Geoff Roberts are planning on driving up to Cincinnati together. And at the last moment, his boss, Diane Scanlon, who is a great antagonist decides to come along with them. I tried to make her as evil and vicious as I could. So it's it's kind of the the buddy trip from hell."  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm a Blubrry affiliate, but that's not the only reason I'm telling you this. I've been using Blubrry Podcasting as my hosting service for my podcast for years and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. They give great customer service, you're in complete control of your own podcast, you can run it from your own website, and it just takes a lot of the work out of podcasting for me. I find for that reason that it's a company that I can get behind 100% and say, “You should try this.” Try Blubrry. It doesn't require a long-term contract, and it's just a great company, period. It also has free technical support by email, video, and phone, so you can get a human being there. Isn't that nice? If you want to podcast, try out Blubrry. In any case, he has also edited legal publications, but today we'll focus on his fiction. Although given the subject matter and being a former EPA attorney myself, I can already picture this interview spinning out of control. In any case, it has that potential. I'm pleased in any case to have with me thriller writer and environmental attorney, Joel Burcat. Hi Joel. Joel: Hi Debbi. It's great to be on your program. Debbi: Well, it's great to have you here. Thank you for coming on and thank you for waiting. I was reading your guest post and I focused in on those words, "gray area,” and I thought, boy, that's exactly where I like to write, in those gray areas. And I always end with a kind of a bittersweet twist. I can't seem to come up with a completely happy ending. It's as if, okay given these laws, given this set of circumstances, here's the best we can do. How do you come out on that? Do you think lawyers have a tendency to do this? Is it a legal thing or is it always mystery writers? Joel: You know, it seems to me that it's relatively easy to write a story that's in black and white. I'm not picking on him and certainly nobody can pick on Lee Child, but Jack Reacher is always sort of a black and white kind of character. You know he's always on the good side and that the other guy is always on the bad side. There's no gray area in there. And with so many other writers, it's very, very clear, not necessarily with writers, but certainly with books that they write or characters that they write, you know, that they are the good guys and that the antagonist is absolutely the bad guy. And in fact, the antagonist can be, be really, really, really bad, and then you've got your good guy, your hero, your the protagonist. You know, it seems to me that it's relatively easy to write a story that's in black and white. I'm not picking on him and certainly nobody can pick on Lee Child, but Jack Reacher is always sort of a black and white kind of character. You know he's always on the good side and that the other guy is always on the bad side. ... And what I found in real life is that typically p...

Overview Joel didn't start as a writer, but he used his career knowledge to empower his writing. That doesn't mean he hasn't learned other lessons about writing and publishing that he shares. YouTube https://youtu.be/odAfQC8GQP8 Transcript [00:00:00] Joel: Are you working on your author career, but struggling to get that first book published, does the goal of being an author seem too lofty or thoughts of having multiple books and making a full-time living are as fantastical as living in Cinderella's castle. Welcome to discovered wordsmiths a podcast where aspiring authors can be heard. Join Stephen Schneider is he finds and talks to authors. You may not know, but authors that have gotten their book on the author career path here, what they've done to get there and where they want to go. Now, settle back. It's time for a bit of inspiration and advice. Come listen to today's discovered [00:00:44] Stephen: wordsmith. All right, Joel, before we begin talking about some of the other author topics use, you've been writing. Uh, a large part of your life, but more seriously in the last couple of years, we're going to be talking about that. So what are some things you have learned from the first [00:01:00] stuff you wrote published? What the newest books are, that would be things that new authors, Hey, avoid this, or here's some good advice. That type of thing. [00:01:09] Joel: One thing that I believe you have to do is learn how to write, and it seems like a. Kind of an obvious statement. We all learn how to write. When we were children went to school, we learned how to write in school and we may have even taken some creative writing courses in college and beyond college. But you need to learn how to write as an author would write. And that's very different than what you might do as a lawyer doctor or a. Podcast producer, the way we write as fiction writers is different and you need to learn stuff about that. And some of it, frankly, for me, I'm not going to talk about others, but some of it for me just went right over my head. I would read a book and I wouldn't pay attention to point of view. I wouldn't necessarily [00:02:00] take a attention to setting other than the fact that this is a cool setting. Wow. That mansion that's really, I wouldn't pay attention to how the author built that up. I wouldn't pay attention necessarily. To the dialogue, unless the dialogue was really stilted. I would say people don't talk like that. Shakespeare Metta talk like that. The normal people don't talk that way. And so you need to learn a few things. And certainly the first investing you can do is just write Stephen King and his book on writing says that your first draft is going to be really bad, but you've got to put it down anyway, any. Who is another well-known writer. Who's also written a book on writing called bird by bird. She's a little more blunt. She says your first draft will be a piece of crap that she actually uses even a stronger word. And she says, your first draft is going to be lousy and you're going to throw it out, but don't worry. Cause nobody else is going to look at it. But the important thing is you've got to get it down on paper. So you start, right? And then you've got to start figuring out what is it I'm doing, right. What is going be doing wrong? [00:03:00] There's so much stuff out there to. I've taken in-person courses over the years, I took a full day long program at Rosemont college. On point of view something I knew I had to know something about, but who would you want to talk about it? A nerdy class go to a full day long class that discusses nothing other than point of view. That's all we talk about. And there are other organs, a lot of organizations that are out there. There are a lot of writing programs that are out there. You don't necessarily need an MFA. Ernest Hemingway didn't have an MFA Steinbeck. Didn't have a Fitzgerald.

So Joel, tell everybody a little bit about yourself, where you live your background and what you like to do outside [00:02:12] Joel: of writing. Yeah. I'm originally from Philadelphia and I live now in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and I've lived here for over 40 years. I came here as a brand new lawyer and went to work for Pennsylvania's department of environmental resources as it was called at the time and planned on staying in Harrisburg for one year. And. Moving back to Philly and I'm still here after 41 years. It's a nice town. I enjoy it. It's a beautiful place and about a block away from the such ground at river. And it's just a gorgeous town to live in with enough activity to keep you interested, especially when you're working, you don't have a whole lot of free time. And then you've got a family and then have a whole lot of free time. And in terms of when did I begin writing? I suppose I always wrote, I was writing in high school. [00:03:00] I was writing in college. It took some creative writing courses. In college. I took a poetry class in college and, and then I just got really busy as a lawyer.
